Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahnagir Tareen on Saturday resigned as general secretary of the party following disqualification from the Supreme Court.

In his resignation letter, Tareen stated him and the PTI Chairperson Imran Khan both faced strict accountability. He stated it is inappropriate to hold his post after the SC verdict.

“Imran has turned PTI into a huge political power and I hope he accepts my resignation,” the disqualified PTI leader said.

“Unfortunately, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has disqualified me on an interpretation of a legal term,” Tareen wrote in his resignation letter sent to Imran.

“It is disappointing that the country’s highest tax paying parliamentarian stands disqualified on a flimsy technical ground,” he added.

Terming his relationship with Imran Khan as an asset, Tareen said he would continue to be a part of the PTI as a political worker.

Tareen said he had no personal interest other than building a ‘Naya (new) Pakistan’ when he joined the party.

Earlier today, Imran met Tareen in Islamabad and discussed varying aspects of the SC’s decision with him, according to Express News. During their meeting, the PTI chairman also asked Tareen to continue performing his duties as PTI’s secretary general.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday disqualified Jahangir Tareen from holding a public office for concealing his 12-acre Hyde House property in the United Kingdom in nomination his papers before the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

PTI general secretary was disqualified under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution for deliberately giving a false statement before the Supreme Court to conceal the ownership of the £5 million worth property abroad.

See the difference in class none of the NS rubbish-Mujhe kyun nikala

That's the difference between PTI and PMLN. Imran should be thankful to JKT otherwise it was going to be a tough decision for IK and the party. JKT efforts are second only to IK in PTI and he worked really hard in last few years on ground.

And guess what after the recent amendment in constitution for Noora now JKT can easily remain SG of PTI but still he selected to resign without creating any awkward situation for IK and PTI.

Well done to JT. He may or may not have been corrupt in the past, the SC has made a decision and we have to accept it but he has changed into a better person since and this letter shows it. Has any Noora ever gone with such dignity?

So, 'IK-ideology' is indeed changing lives.

And in the end , it wasn't about earning through unfair means or looting tax payers money. As I understand, it was about 'Not Declaring' his property.
A property that may be his legally earned money, or may be not. This we don't know.

A resignation?? A rarity in Pakistan. Hope JKT is treated with dignity and respect because he remained dignified. Wonder what the crooks in government will have to say about this. No doubt something like "he resigned because he knew he was guilty, our sher is courageous like the true lion he is...."

What a dignified man, he had no obligation to leave his post by law but still decided to go.

As soon as he joined PTI, i started hearing he is a corrupt person but he was top tax paying parliamentarian even before joining PTI and pays his farmers very well compared to sugar mafia.

He makes Nawaz sharif a very low class individual, Sharif in comparison has blamed anyone/everyone for his dismissal and in Tareen's case, he managed to provide proper banking transactions for his property. Sharif hasn't yet provided even property ownership papers let alone banking transactions.

He has been the top taxpayer in the Parliament for the past few years. He pays between Rs 40 to 50 million annually. Farmers in Lodhran adore him a lot as he looks after their needs and pays them well when compared to other feudals in Sindh and Punjab.

He also runs an education charity.

Where are the Nooras? Has anyone seen Mamoon etc

He will rear his head up whenever any sufficient anti-PTI news interests him. Minor pesky things like PMLN's bigotry or Imran Khan being clean won't interest him.

I dont have much time for him because of the very reason you stated but its not just him, there are others. Alas they are too embarrassed to admit they are wrong.

It's not just him, but a common trait amongst all Nooras.

Remember last week when some loser tried to blame the rise of Taliban on Imran Khan :)))

These Nooras are top entertainment.

Hilarious how Imran Khan is labelled Taliban Khan by the liberals (and I count myself as a liberal for those all know me) and a Jewish/Hindu agent by the religious groups.

:))

He said i bow my head in compliance of the disqualification order from the highest court instead of asking "mujhe kyun nikala?"

I want the PTI to use the case as a real driver for change. They must bring cases of wealth beyond known sources for everyone in power in the last 10yrs and even further back. The case against IK and JT has opened up once in a life time chance to change the power of the elite to buy elections.

SC spent more thn 1 year on just this case so it's gonna be hard even if you open just 5 more cases like this. There are not enough SC judges to form different benches to hear these cases.

SC upholds Jahangir Tareen's disqualification

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday dismissed a review petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen who had challenged a verdict that declared him unfit to hold public office.

As the hearing went under way, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar remarked that the court will not hear the case again. "We kept asking you [to declare assets] but you took very long to even submit the trust deed," the chief justice remarked.

The chief justice further observed that it was now the trend that leaders should bring back money in the country. "Money from abroad should be brought back to Pakistan," Justice Nisar noted.

Addressing Tareen's lawyer, Sikandar Basheer Mohmand, the top judge said, "Your client is a significant leader. Has he ever thought about bringing money back to Pakistan?"

Further, the chief justice said it had come to his knowledge that Tareen bought a company and shares. "How can a public representative make such suspicious transactions?"

A visibly emotional Tareen presented his arguments as his lawyer raised his voice.

The court then admonished the latter for his behaviour. "Keep the volume of your voice low and do not shout in court," the chief justice advised. Issuing an apology, Mohmand clarified that he was habitual of speaking in a loud voice.

I hope Imran Khan distances himself from shady characters like Tareen.

Senior Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen sent out defamation notices worth Rs1 billion each to anchorpersons Shahzeb Khanzada and Waseem Badami for making "false imputations" in their news programmes that have or are likely to cause "serious harm and injury to his reputation".

According to the notice sent to him, Khanzada in his programme Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath, which aired on Geo News on January 21, had given the impression that Tareen was part of a "sugar mafia" and was "collusively involved or complicit in causing artificial inflation" of refined sugar across the country.

Furthermore, the notice said, Khanzada had suggested that Tareen was "managing or deciding" the federal and provincial governments' policy pertaining to the production, sales, import or export of refined sugar which had led to an increase in the commodity's price. It was also implied that Tareen's interest in the sugar industry was "obstructing the due regulation of sugar mills and the price of sugar" by authorities.

The notice pointed out that Tareen was not a part of the federal or provincial governments and therefore, cannot influence the policy-making process. It also insisted that the PTI leader had "no nexus with or any authority over regulatory institutions" such as the Competition Commission of Pakistan.

ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER AD

Khanzada was addressing the rising sugar prices in his programme and had said that Tareen, "who is looking at matters of the import and export of agricultural products, owns sugar mills".

In a separate notice sent to Badami, Tareen took exception to being referred to as "corrupt" in the anchorperson's show 11th Hour, aired on ARY News on January 23. According to the notice, Badami had offered "no proof or evidence of the alleged corruption of or corrupt practice(s)" against Tareen.

In his programme, Badami, while talking about Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2019 report, had said that the prime minister had surrounded himself with people who had been accused of corruption.

In both the notices, Tareen complained that Khanzada and Badami had not sought his response to the "highly malicious, defamatory and damaging" statements.

Terming Khanzada and Badami's statements as "unfounded and concocted", Tareen's counsel demanded that the anchorpersons withdraw their "defamatory imputations", tender a "proper public apology" in their respective programmes as well as "publish a contradiction of the said defamatory statement(s)".

The notices warned that if the anchorpersons did not take the above measures, legal proceedings would be initiated against both of them for damages amounting to Rs1bn each under the Defamation Ordinance, 2002.

This is a very ill informed comment but really don't expect much out of people who are following a leader who tells them to stop reading newspapers or watching the TV so they remain ill informed. Go look at the production capacity of Tareen's four sugar mills and combine that with either the mills owned by Nawaz or Zardari and you will see who the largest producer of sugar in Pakistan

Please can you provide me figures about other markets too. Let's start with meat :)

Can Junooni's please answer one question.

Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar currently serves as the Federal Minister of National Food Security and Research and is also a business partner of Tareen and owns a sugar mill. He has also been inviting Tareen to government meetings.

Why is no one in the party looking into the conflict of interest specially in the case of the wheat and sugar crises which are currently ongoing.

Not just that, but after his “bud tareen” humiliation in politics, Ali Tareen is now using his fraud daddy’s black money to invest in a PSL franchise.

Imagine the uproar if the son of a corrupt PMLN or PPP politician would invest in PSL.

Tareen fails to appear before FIA CIT

Submits reply through counsel that he is in London undergoing treatment

Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Jahangir Khan Tareen on Saturday did not appear before the Federal Investigation Agency, Lahore’s Combined Investigation Team (CIT) in the sugar mills case despite being used summons due to health concerns.

Tareen did not appear in the Rs15 billion corporate fraud case, but has submitted a reply to the FIA’s CIT.

Tareen’s lawyer appeared before the CIT and stated that his client could not come as he was undergoing treatment in London.

In his reply, Tareen said that he was currently undergoing treatment in London and needed adequate time to answer the questions.

Tareen said that time should be given so that “I can answer all the questions with the required documents”.

According to details, during the Sugar Commission investigation, evidence of Tareen committing corporate fraud of Rs15 billion through his own sugar mills came to light on the basis of which the FIA summoned him, however, Tareen did not appear and submitted his reply through his consel.

Now, the answers of Tareen and his son Ali Tareen will be put before the inquiry commission which will decide whether to give time.

Tareen was summoned by the FIA team investigating money laundering in the sugar mills case in Lahore.

Ali Tareen has also been summoned on September 20 (Sunday).

You took my comment the wrong way. :usman

I wasn't calling you a janooni (my bad if it seems that way)

I was just saying that if it was NS they would be complaining and know with JT no one cares (I was making a point that PTI supporters are hypocrites and make up excuses when its their "guy" so I said "but Junoonis are doing what they always do" because no one is coming to this thread but if it was NS situation would be totally different...)

NS is a convict, JT isn't yet. If he is convicted, you will have a point.

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s disgruntled leader Jehangir Tareen, who is currently in the United Kingdom (UK) and was summoned by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) over the sugar scam investigation, submitted a ‘short reply’ on Saturday, seeking more time to respond to the FIA’s queries.

In his reply, Mr Tareen said he is in the United Kingdom and undergoing medical treatment, pledging that once he got well he would return to the country to appear before the FIA in person.

He said he needed more time to file a reply to the FIA’s questions related to his businesses, assets and sugar mills.

The FIA Lahore’s combined investigation team is probing into the sugar scam. It had also summoned Mr Tareen’s son Ali, who is the owner of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise `Multan Sultan’, on Friday last to record his statement.

Mr Ali informed the FIA through his lawyer that he was in London and needed time to submit a reply to its queries.

Facing probe in sugar scam case, PTI leader seeks time to respond to questions

The FIA has sought details of Mr Tareen’s assets here and abroad, his bank transactions, especially transfer of money abroad, bank accounts of his family members and his employees and sugar-related transactions of his firm JDW.

A source close to Mr Tareen told Dawn that the FIA had been activated against Mr Tareen by a powerful adviser to the prime minister and a bureaucrat following Prime Minister Imran Khan’s recent television interview in which he had talked about his (Tareen’s) services for the party and his close association with Mr Khan. The PM had expressed the hope that Mr Tareen would come clean of the charges he was facing (in the scam).

NS *is* PMLN. Any PTI supporters worth their skin have disavowed JT — not all PTI supporters are”janoonis”.

Jahangir Tareen denies committing any offence

Submitting his reply over a call-up notice to the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Combined Investigation Team (CIT) in the sugar scam investigation, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen has denied committing any offence.

“It must be pointed out that no offence has ever been committed by JDW, or by me, and no proof of any such offence has been brought forth either by the JIT or the CIT. In fact none of the queries and concerns raised in the call-up notices make out any offence under the Schedule of the FIA Act, 1974. Even otherwise, the offences as implied in the call-up notices have no nexus with federal government. All investment transactions, acquisitions, and payment transactions mentioned in the call-up notices were conducted for a lawful purpose. Neither was any acquisition conducted at an inflated or exorbitant price, nor was there any haphazard investment or payment transaction. In fact, all transactions were financially prudent under the circumstances in which they were carried out,” said a five-page reply submitted by JDW Sugar Mills Limited CEO Jahangir Tareen to FIA CIT.

The PTI stalwart had been summoned by the FIA for the second time on September 24 but could not appear. He sent a letter along with a comprehensive reply to the CIT.

The FIA had sought details about Tareen’s assets here and abroad, bank transactions, especially transfer of money abroad, bank accounts of his family members and his employees and the sugar-related transactions of his firm JDW.

On the sugar crisis, the inquiry committee headed by FIA Director General Wajid Zia had prepared the report in April last. It had probed hike in prices and the subsidy obtained by sugar barons during last year in particular and past four years in general.

The report revealed that two main groups had obtained maximum benefit during the crisis; one of the groups, JDW, belonging to Tareen which had six sugar mills, obtained 12.28% of the total export subsidy amounting to Rs3.058 billion during 2015-18.

The report said that during 2018-19, Tareen’s companies exported 17.24% of the total production of sugar and availed 22.71% of total export subsidy, amounting to Rs561million.

It is learnt that renowned lawyer Salman Safdar has been engaged by Tareen to assist him in this matter.

“I am in the United Kingdom undergoing medical examinations and treatment. But in the spirit of cooperation, I have gone through and duly considered the queries raised by CIT in the said call-up notices and my response to them is contained in the attached statement, that may be treated statement u/s 161 of Cr. PC,” said the letter sent by Tareen to CIT.

The reply stated that JDW provided employment to over 12,000 workers directly, and more than 50,000 farmers, goods transporters and workers were indirectly associated with the farming supply chain across Pakistan.

The JDW’s annual revenue stands at approximately Rs70 billion. The organisation generates annual tax revenue amounting to approximately Rs15 billion and is amongst the highest tax payers in the sugar industry as well as other industries. It has been awarded PSX (Pakistan Stock Exchange) top 25 companies award thrice during the past decade.

Tareen in his reply stated that all JDW personnel had cooperated with the JIT and CIT at every stage and provided documentary evidence to establish the transparent, legitimate, and bona fide nature of each transaction.

In the spirit of cooperation and to further assist the CIT, relevant record/documents in the form of 11 volumes pertaining to queries of call-up notices were produced along with this statement.

The reply reiterated that, no director, shareholder, or other stakeholder had ever been aggrieved, directly or indirectly, by any of the transactions mentioned in the call-up notices.

“Therefore, I request that the Inquiry No. 134/2020 be dropped.”

About the concern regarding the due diligence measures undertaken by JDW whilst purchasing assets and liabilities of JK Farming Systems Limited (“JKFS”) – a sugar cane farming company – the reply emphasised that any question of financial irregularity in JDW’s acquisition of the assets of JKFS simply does not arise.

“This investment was a highly practical, prudent, and beneficial investment which contributed immense value to JDW’s operations, playing a significant role in the development of sugarcane. It was decided by JDW’s Board of Directors (BOD) that purchasing sugarcane business operations of JKFS was a financially pragmatic step, since it enabled JDW to secure 15-18% of its sugar cane supply for all times to come. The valuation and survey of the assets of JKFS was carried out by an independent surveyor, namely Unicorn International Surveyors, which is a member of the Pakistan Engineering Council and is on the panel of approved valuators of Pakistan Banking Association. The acquisition transaction was also reviewed by one of the world’s premier chartered accountancy firms, AF Ferguson & Co. Chartered Accountants. The reports furnished by these firms have previously been supplied to the Sugar Inquiry Commission,” the reply further stated.

Regarding Faruki Pulp Mills Limited (“FPML”), the reply said that “this was a unique project with a high potential for profitability. There is a misconception that JDW whimsically injected a lump-sum of Rs3.15 billion in FPML. In fact, the investment was carried out over a period of 8 years and during that time period technical and financial experts were repeatedly consulted regarding the project.

“In the meantime, JDW saw an investment opportunity in bagasse-based co-generation plants, and therefore FPML, for the time being, was put on the back burner. The co-generation power plants proved an excellent investment which contributed significantly to the profitability of JDW.”

The reply stated that cash withdrawals to meet expenses were a routine practice in most large-scale companies and do not run afoul of any law. These withdrawals were made from proper company accounts and no amounts were ever deposited in any personal account.

“Thirdly, in connection with the cash payments, it has been implied in the query raised that the cash payments were a lump-sum amount of Rs. 2.2 billion. However, it must be clarified that these payments were made over a period of 3 years. This is very normal for an organization of JDW’s size and is a relatively insignificant amount given that it is below 1% of the overall turnover for the 3-year period, which was approximately Rs 200 billion.

“Fourthly, in response to the query regarding the source of cash deposits in the accounts of ATF Mango Farms (Pvt) Limited and JK Dairies (Pvt) Limited, please note that following the corporatisation of the aforementioned companies and subsequent handover of my shareholding therein, I ceased to hold any management or executive position in either company, nor do I any longer hold a stake in them,” said the reply.

Regarding the transactions between JDW and Deharki Sugar Mills (Private) Limited (“DSML”), the response noted that all transactions were fully documented and, contrary to what has been alleged, there was nothing haphazard about those.

PTI's ‘isolated’ lea*der Jahangir Tareen arrived in Lahore on Friday after spending several months in the United Kingdom.

He was accompanied by his son Ali Tareen.

Earlier this year, a sugar inquiry commission — formed on the directives of the premier to probe the rise in the price of the commodity — had revealed names of many bigwigs, including Tareen, who had allegedly benefitted from the crisis.

Tareen — a close confidant of Prime Minister Imran Khan — had 'quietly' departed for London in June despite being a prime suspect in the sugar scam.

Speaking to the media upon his arrival at Allama Iqbal International Airport today, Tareen said he went abroad for medical treatment. "I have been going abroad for this purpose for the past seven years," he said.

When asked about the allegations levelled by the opposition regarding his business and his departure to UK, he replied: "The opposition has only one purpose, it only points fingers at others."

He added that he did not feel that there was a need to respond to the opposition. "Thanks to Allah, my business is clean," he added.

Taking to Twitter shortly after his arrival, he said: "All of my mills, including those in Sindh, will start crushing on November 10. I will play my part in helping the government overcome the sugar shortage and price hike."

The PTI leader's departure had prompted backlash from the opposition. The PML-N had raised questions over Tareen being allowed to leave and had accused the premier of pursuing "selective accountability".

Meanwhile, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), which is probing the sugar scam, had sought a reply from Tareen and had summoned him for investigation. Initially, he had rejected the summons. Later, he asked the agency for more time to respond to its queries, adding that he would appear before the FIA once he returned.

The FIA has sought details of Tareen’s assets in Pakistan and abroad, his bank transactions, especially transfer of money abroad, bank accounts of his family members and his employees and sugar-related transactions of his firm JDW.

A source close to Tareen had told Dawn that the FIA had been activated against the business magnate by a powerful adviser to the prime minister and a bureaucrat following the premier's interview in which he had talked about the tycoon's services for the party.

The premier had expressed the hope that Tareen would come clean of the charges he was facing (in the scam).

LAHORE: Business magnate-turned-politician Jahangir Khan Tareen has been "in touch with PTI lawmakers in Punjab to convince them to vote for the ruling party in the upcoming Senate polls," a member of the National Assembly claimed on Friday.

Speaking to Geo.tv PTI MNA Raja Riaz said that Jahangir Tareen is "in contact with the ruling party's MNAs and MPAs," not only in South Punjab but throughout the province, asking them to vote for its candidates in the Senate polls scheduled for early March.

When asked if Tareen — the party's former secretary-general and the main sponsor of its operations — was doing so in a personal capacity or the on the directions of the party's chief, Prime Minister Imran Khan, Riaz claimed that the business magnate "took up the task on the premier's request."

The Senate elections are scheduled on March 3, with the ruling PTI expected to clinch the majority number of seats in the upper house.

Earlier in the day, The News had reported, citing sources, that Jehangir Tareen had initiated consultations with Punjab lawmakers closely associated with him, especially from the Seraiki-speaking areas, in wake of the upcoming Senate polls.

Tareen — whose role in the lone general seat of the Senate from Islamabad would be crucial — would draw up his strategy for the Senate elections in the light of the discussions, sources had added.

The regime's candidate from Islamabad, Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, would be facing off former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, associated with the Opposition's anti-government coalition under the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).

Tareen, the sources had added, is in Islamabad now, since a majority of the PTI lawmakers from the Seraiki area were visibly tilted towards Gilani, who served the area with a special interest and maintained close liaison with them during his tenure as the prime minister and earlier as the National Assembly speaker.

Both the divides of the Senate contest have approached Tareen for support, the sources had added, but the PTI leadership had not established contact with him for the purpose.

No one wants Tareen to leave PTI: Punjab governor

KARACHI:
Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar has said that no one in the ruling party wanted leader Jahangir Tareen to leave the party, claiming the disgruntled leader was making his own decisions.

Speaking to media here on Saturday, the governor sought to dispel the notion that certain people in the Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf (PTI) wanted Tareen out of the party, adding the party was united under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The clarification comes a day after Tareen made an off-the-cuff innuendo-laden statement at a wedding ceremony of PML-N leader Khwaja Saad Rafique's daughter in Lahore.

In a candid talk with media, Tareen said his “plane” could take off in any direction even towards the PML-N camp, adding that his long-standing ties with Nawaz Sharif’s party will continue like before.
“Khawaja Saad is a brother to me and we have remained together like close relatives,” he added.

'PM, govt to complete 5-year constitutional term'

Answering a question during Saturday’s talk, Sarwar said that he was also aware of the rumours that the ouster ex-premier Nawaz Sharif was seeking to return to Pakistan but maintained that he was unmoved about the latter's decisions.

“I have nothing to do with his decision. The opposition has been talking of sending PM Imran home ever since the PTI came into power but so far, the opposition has remained failed.”

He asserted the premier will complete his constitutional term till 2023. “We will go to the people and will accept whatever they decide for us because we have always respected the decision of the public and will continue to do so,” he maintained.

Replying to a question about local government elections in Punjab, Sarwar said the post of Punjab’s governor was constitutional and apolitical.

“I have no responsibility given by the prime minister regarding local government election and other issues.”

He explained that as far as consultation is concerned, “we consult on every issue in the party and will continue to do so.” The party, he added, has formed provincial organisations in all provinces of the country, including Punjab, which will take decisions in consultation on various issues, including the strengthening of the party.

“I will actively take part in the politics in the general elections of 2023 and will make decisions in consultation with the party,” he said.

Responding to a question about foreign funding case, he said the issue was pending with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and would give his opinion only when the commission has announced its decision.

He said that there is no other example of the facilities provided by the present government to Pakistan and foreign investors.

“Today most of the investment in Pakistan is in the housing sector and I urge those who invest in the housing sector to ensure that the rules are followed in all cases so that they do not face any difficulties in the days to come,” he advised.

The PML-N on Tuesday confirmed the party is in touch with the disgruntled Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) group led by Jahangir Khan Tareen to seek its support to oust the Imran Khan government.

When asked whether the party was making efforts to woo the JKT group, PML-N MPA Hamza Shehbaz said: “We are in contact with everyone (including the JKT group) as our sole target is removing Imran Khan.”

To another question about Minister for Water Resources Moonis Elahi’s statement that his party (the PML-Q) stood with the PM, Hamza said: “The opposition is working on its plan to send the PTI government home and it will succeed.”

Hamza was talking to journalists outside an accountability court where he appeared in the Ramzan Sugar Mills corruption reference.

Later, the Jehangir Tareen group met to discuss the current situation emerging after the opposition’s efforts to woo PTI allies. The meeting was held at the residence of the chief minister’s former adviser, Awn Chaudry, and was attended by 20 PTI MPAs and six MNAs.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Mr Tareen said the purported no-confidence motion had not been tabled yet and it was not clear whether it would be at all.

To a question about any contacts with the opposition, he said the group had gathered after a long time and it was yet to be seen how it should play its role in the current political scenario.

He further maintained political leaders stayed in touch with each other, adding the group would hold more huddles to discuss their future strategy.

Mr Tareen said they also talked about inflation during the meeting, but nothing specific about the no-confidence motion. “It is premature to discuss this issue,” he concluded, urging the premier to provide relief to the masses.

Earlier, it was reported that Mr Tareen had met Maulana Fazlur Rehman last week, but did not make any commitments and sought time to respond. Reportedly, the Tareen group comprises 30 PTI MPAs from south Punjab and eight MNAs.

On the other hand, Shehbaz Sharif, who appeared in the Aashiyana Housing and Ramzan Sugar Mills corruption references, told reporters that PM Khan was more bothered about destroying the economy, causing unemployment and taking huge loans than the opposition’s activities. “Imran Khan has destroyed the country. Corruption worth billions of rupees was committed in the sugar, wheat, LNG and other sectors,” he claimed.

PML-N leader Tallal Chaudhry said the “strategy” to oust the government could not be disclosed. “The PDM is forming a committee in a few days that will formally meet the government allies,” he announced.

After Moonis Elahi’s assurance to PM Khan, the ruling party has asked the opposition to stop pinning hopes on the government allies. “After Mr Moonis’ statement the opposition can do nothing. He (Shehbaz Sharif) was being efficient to save himself from accountability about a sum of Rs4bn deposited into the account of his peon Maqsood (in the FIA’s Rs16bn money laundering reference),” state minister Farrukh Habib tweeted.

The Imran Khan government appears to be jittery about Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) disgruntled leader Jehangir Khan Tareen’s purported meetings with the opposition amid their efforts to oust the premier.

On the other hand, the nine-party Pakistan Democratic Mo*v*ement (PDM) alliance, as well as the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have agreed to bring a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan but are not currently considering a similar move regarding Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, National Asse*mbly Speaker Asad Qaiser or Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani.

Though some government functionaries are playing down Mr Tareen’s supposedly clandestine meeting with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif, a source privy to the development says the government is indeed wary of ongoing activities in the opposition’s camp, especially the flurry around Mr Tareen.

“The activities of Mr Tareen, members of his group and the government’s allies are being closely monitored by government agencies and reported to the top man,” the source said. In the case of Jehangir Tareen, particularly, he said the government faced a dilemma. “If the government grills him again through the Federal Investigation Agency in the sugar scam to pressure him, it may backfire in the form of a revolt by around 10 MNAs and 30 MPAs which Tareen claims to have the backing of. If the government acts as an onlooker, the opposition may end up working things out with him.”

Mr Tareen’s purported meetings with PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Shehbaz Sharif have not been acknowledged or denied by either side.

However, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry played down Mr Tareen’s meetings with the opposition and hoped his fellow party leader won’t ditch the PTI. In a media talk in Pind Dadan Khan on Saturday, when asked whether Jehangir Tareen was supporting the PDM in its planned no-confidence motion, he said: “I have a respectable relationship with Tareen sahib. As far as I know him... I don’t think he will take any decision that damages the party. He will remain with the party (PTI).”

When asked whether PM Khan or any ministers have plans to meet Mr Tareen to allay his concerns, Mr Chaudhry said: “I don’t know about his meetings with opposition leaders, but we have good relations with him and do not feel the need for a special meeting with him.”

The minister believed the lawmakers backing Mr Tareen were seasoned politicians and would not part ways with the party for something that has an uncertain future.

When asked if the Tareen group and the government’s allies were being monitored by agencies, Mr Chaudhry denied this impression, saying: “No such thing is happening as such monitoring is illegal.”

But sources in the Tareen camp said the former PTI secretary general was keeping his cards close to his chest.

“One thing is for sure: none of the group members is willing to say goodbye to Mr Tareen and that is his strength for negotiating in the fast-changing political landscape,” they said, indicating that “things do not look good for the premier in the current scenario”. Sources said top leaders of both PPP and PML-N were keen to have Mr Tareen join them but since a PML-N ticket is considered a hot commodity in Punjab, the party is confident it will be the ultimate destination of those parting ways with the government.

A PPP leader is of the opinion that there is many a slip between the cup and the lip and, therefore, the Tareen group may join the party of the Bhuttos seeing it as a strong candidate forming the next government.

About solely focusing on ousting the prime minister, a source in the PDM said: “The main opposition parties — PML-N, PPP and JUI-F — have agreed, in principle, to table a no-trust move against PM Khan, and not others.”

The opposition was “exclusively” working on this plan and once it achieved the “magic number” it would execute it, he added. Moreover, PML-N Punjab president Rana Sanaullah on Saturday again claimed that the opposition had achieved the support of “more government MNAs” than required to send Imran Khan home. He had earlier claimed to have the backing of over 20 treasury lawmakers.

Talking to reporters in Lahore, Mr Sanaullah said the government’s own members were frustrated with it (over soaring inflation and poor governance) and not interested in contesting the next election on PTI tickets. He claimed that the opposition was not looking towards any “umpire”, a reference to the establishment, saying all institutions should work within their constitutional ambit.

Castigating PM Imran Khan over what he said was his crude choice of words during a speech in Mandi Bahauddin, the PML-N leader asked if the address befitted a prime minister.

Similarly, PML-N information secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb said the premier’s speech displayed his nervousness about his foreseen departure. “We want to give good news to the people of Pakistan that soon they will get rid of the selected premier through a no-confidence move,” she told a presser here, adding that the ‘umpire’ needed to be neutral.

“The umpire should give an ‘out’ if he (Imran Khan) is out. Our preparation to bring a no-trust move against Imran Khan is complete. I want to tell Imran that power is slipping out of his hands,” Ms Aurangzeb said, adding that his “rented spokespersons” won’t stand by him when he would be sent packing. The PTI’s coalition partners — PML-Q, MQM and BAP — are also treading carefully.

The MQM-P has already met the Chaudhrys of PML-Q and agreed to move ahead with mutual consultation in case the opposition brings its no-confidence motion.

The PML-Q lawmakers have authorised Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi to make all future decisions (about the opposition’s offer to join it).

PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif, PDM president Maulana Fazl and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari have met the Chaudhrys and tried to persuade them to say goodbye to the government for the people’s sake.

The government on its part has become emboldened after federal Minister for Water Resources Moonis Elahi of the PML-Q told the prime minister that his family stood firmly with him.

Shehbaz Sharif also met the MQM leaders who sought time to respond to his offer. His meeting with the Chaudhrys after 14 years also generated a debate in the media.

However, the opposition has yet to call on the Balochistan Awami Party which recently claimed that it was told by ‘certain quarters’ to take a decision on its own.

JT needs to go with the crooks and support them and bring down IK. It's shows a level of beghairati when the people that call you Punjabs biggest chore and you meet with them in secret.

Reports says JKT has refused PDM's offer.

I am not convinced- JT has to faces his cases- whats he scared off, he has great lawyers and if he isnt guilty then he will be fine but this group of 5 or 6 that he controls should be shown the door. Just for JT to meet SS is the height of beghairti, these same people call the biggest Daku in Punjab.
