With Rohit Sharma’s retirement on the horizon, could Jasprit Bumrah be India’s next Test and ODI captain? His performance and decision-making on Day 1 of the 1st Test against Australia certainly suggest he’s ready for the challenge. Leading from the front, Bumrah’s incredible 4/17 turned the game on its head after India was bowled out for just 150.

He’s only the second fast bowler to lead India in Tests after Kapil Dev, breaking barriers and proving that bowlers can make exceptional captains too. Bumrah’s approach to captaincy is refreshing—he trusts his instincts, emphasizes adaptability, and isn’t afraid to take calculated risks.

Having learned from some of the best in Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Bumrah looks prepared to bring his own style to the role. Could he be the leader India needs for the future?

What are your thoughts on Bumrah as the long-term captain for India?

I am genuinely excited about the prospect of Jasprit Bumrah taking up the captaincy mantle for India!

His performance against Australia was phenomenal, and it really showcased his potential as a leader.

Maybe the pitch also helped him and the other bowlers but I like how thing started for him.

Sunil Gavaskar loses it on air during Day 1 of the 1st Test against Australia as Jasprit Bumrah snubs R Ashwin:

"Really surprised with Ashwin and Jadeja not playing, they have got 900 wickets between them in Test matches. They are not bowlers who can just play in Indian or sub-continent conditions. They are very clever bowlers, they are very experienced bowlers. Even if they might not get you wickets, they will be able to slow the scoring down because of the cleverness of how they bowl."

"I would have thought that on these Australian wickets, there are big boundaries, so I thought you would have gone with both of them. But this is a new management, new thinking. They have gone with Nitish Kumar Reddy, who is a promising cricketer, make no mistake about that. But is he ready for Test cricket?"

That’s what true ATG bowlers do. They win games out of nowhere, just phenomenal spell from him.

His impact away from home especially in Australia, South Africa and England is right up there with the greatest in the history of the game.

He's an amazing captain based of what I've seen so far but he can't be an all format captain. But maybe he's the right man to take india's test team forward
