Aston Villa have signed former Chelsea and England captain John Terry, the Championship club's owner Dr Tony Xia has announced on social media.

The 36-year-old defender's contract at Stamford Bridge expired on 30 June.

Terry, who won 78 caps for England, played 717 games for Chelsea and won his fifth Premier League title in May.

Villa finished 13th in the Championship last season but Steve Bruce's side are among the favourites to win automatic promotion to the top flight in 2017-18.

In one of the greatest moves in the history of football, John Terry has signed with Aston Villa; this signing is only eclipsed by Sir Alex Ferguson signing Ronaldo all those years ago.

Aston Villa will not only return to top flight soon enough, they will be competing for the Premier league title.

One of the most selfless decisions in footballing history :)) I have no idea how we managed to snare him :))) It's a one year deal and he is expected to earn 60K a week which is lucrative by championship standards, WC-Passion do you know what deal Terry was on with Chelsea? how much was he making per week

I use the chelsea kit for toilet paper like most sensible citizens in England, he felt disgraced representing a bunch of cowards. Now he is with a team with a bit of self respect and one which has won the premier league 7 times ! including the champions league. Factually speaking Aston Villa is a bigger club then Chelsea and has accomplished more then them, this is a big upgrade for Terry and good on him; in the sickening monopoly of domestic football he will take our club back where it belongs. Terry may have played for Chelsea but his heart has always been with Villa, what a legend

We don't have a lot of money, so this is incredible ! thank you John Terry  football is full of selfish and greedy cowards so this is a big boost for our club , rarely do you see footballers agree to such a move and with bruce at the helm I have faith we have a shot at getting back into the PL. It is sickening that people are against this move, Terry has done it all for Chelsea if he wants to help Villa out; nothing wrong with that at all

And Villa is not doing so well at the moment but it is beyond ignorant to neglect how big a football club they are in England, I suggest people study history; some of you are going on like he has signed for Milwall or something.

Aston Villa were one of the founder members of the Football League in 1888 and of the Premier League in 1992. Aston Villa are also one of only five English clubs to be crowned champions of Europe, having won the 1981–82 European Cup (Champions League). They have also won the Premier League 7 times, the FA Cup seven times, the Football League Cup 5 times, and the UEFA Super Cup once. So show some god damn RESPECT !

Terry leaving his lifelong partner in search of something better. Must say I am not surprised going by his history. :srt

Good luck to him - there are not many players like Terry who would move from a club like Chelsea to a mid table Championship side. Most would have gone to China or America.

shaz619 villa is one of the historical clubs of english football. recent times have been tough of course. But still a big club with huge history n tradition.

Well said, Terry didn't want to play against the blues so the options for him were China, America or the Championship; and he could have picked any team but signed with Villa for a reason, because it is the biggest club at that level and one of the biggest in England overall when it comes to their history and English footballing tradition.

Interesting decision to drop down to the championship but credit to him for doing that. It will certainly attract more viewers to the championship.

I think it's a good signing for Villa, he has the experience and leadership there looking for. Also in a league like the championship you require characters like Terry. Not a fan of him as a human being but as a footballer I respect him a lot.

Hope to see Villa back in the premier league.

John Terry: Former England and Chelsea captain retires from football

Former England and Chelsea captain John Terry has retired from football.

Terry, 37, has been without a club since leaving Championship side Aston Villa in the summer.

The defender made the announcement on his Instagram account, saying: "After 23 incredible years as a footballer, I have decided now is the right time for me to retire from playing."

Terry, who won 78 England caps, left Chelsea in 2017 after 19 seasons at the London club.

He won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, a Champions League title in his time at Stamford Bridge.

The centre-back also won five league cups and a Europa League in more than 700 appearances for Chelsea.

Terry spent the 2017-18 season at Aston Villa and his last game as a professional was the 1-0 Championship play-off final defeat to Fulham in May.

He left Villa Park when his one-year contract expired and turned down a move to Spartak Moscow last month, despite reportedly having a medical, saying it was not right for his family.

Cheerio Champ! A tremendous career from a British legend, will forever be thankful for his inspirational leadership and performance at Villa, it was an honour to have him at Villa and retire on the back of a great run during our championship campaign although we just fell short but that's football.

Best of luck to Terry for the future, its just a matter of when before he becomes a manager.

A good old fashioned English centre back, hard as nails, great in the air and tackled with force. A dying breed.

You couldn't have posted anything more beautiful and I am sure he has so much more to contribute to the game if that is what he'd like to do. A throwback without a doubt and one of our all time greats

Not a fan of him as a person (at all), but his status as a fantastic footballer, inspirational leader and genuinely world-class player at his peak - who actually scored quite a few goals for a defender as well - cannot be denied.

If we are willing to look past Tony Adams, John Terry may be the best English centre-back since Bobby Moore.

Not a fan of his at all. But he was a brilliant defender and a fantastic leader. One of the most mentally tough defenders I have ever seen.

Congrats on a great career JT.

John Terry: Aston Villa assistant among frontrunners for Derby job after takeover

John Terry is among the frontrunners to be the next manager of Derby County, once the club's takeover is complete.

Sky Sports News can confirm newspaper reports linking Terry to the Derby job, which the current Aston Villa assistant coach sees as an excellent first opportunity in management.

Terry has made no secret of his desire to become a 'number one' and was impressed by what his friend and former Stamford Bridge team-mate, Frank Lampard, achieved in his first step into management at Derby.

It is understood Terry is also excited by the prospect of substantial new investment in the club by a prominent member of the Abu Dhabi royal family.

Sheikh Khaled's Derventio Holdings is going through the final legal stages of buying out current owner Mel Morris, who is assisting with the pursuit of a new manager alongside senior members of Sheikh Khaled's executive team.

Terry's former England team-mate, Wayne Rooney, is currently in interim charge of the Derby team, and he too is keen to take on the job full-time once the new owners are in place.

The possible appointment of Terry could be seen as controversial after a past incident involving the former Chelsea captain was the focus of a BBC documentary on Monday evening.

Former West Ham, QPR and Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand spoke about the guilt he felt at not speaking out during his high-profile racism case against Terry in a special one-off programme - Anton Ferdinand: Football, Racism and Me.

Terry was accused of using racist language during a Premier League match between QPR and Chelsea in October, 2011.

Although Terry was acquitted in a criminal case related to the incident, after it was judged it could not be proven beyond reasonable doubt the words were spoken as abuse, a Football Association independent disciplinary panel, working to a lower threshold, did find him guilty.

He's back at Chelsea.

Former captain John Terry will return to Chelsea in a coaching consultancy role with the club's academy.

The ex-England defender will work with players and coaching staff in Chelsea's youth development programme in a part-time capacity from early January.

Terry, 41, won 15 major honours during 19 years as a Chelsea player before joining Aston Villa, where he was assistant manager from 2018 to 2021.

"I'm delighted to announce that I'm coming home," he said on social media.

"The flexibility is key for both myself and the academy as it allows me to continue and develop my own coaching skills and ambitions alongside other commitments."
