India’s first World Cup-winning cricket captain Kapil Dev underwent an angioplasty on Friday after complaining of chest pain and is expected to be discharged in the next couple of days, said the hospital where he is admitted.

The 61-year-old felt uneasy on Thursday following which he was taken to a hospital here.

“Cricketer Kapil Dev came to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute (Okhla Road) emergency department at 1:00 am on 23rd October with a complaint of chest pain. He was evaluated and an emergency coronary angioplasty was performed in the middle of night,” the hospital stated.

“Currently, he is admitted in ICU and under close supervision of Dr Atul Mathur and his team. Kapil Dev is stable now and he is expected to get discharged in a couple of days.”

Angioplasty is a procedure to open blocked arteries and restore normal blood flow to the heart.

Indian Cricketers Association (ICA) President Ashok Malhotra, a friend of Kapil, earlier told PTI that the iconic cricketer is doing fine.

“He is feeling okay now. I just spoke to his wife (Romi). He was feeling uneasy yesterday. He is undergoing check-ups at a hospital as we speak,” Malhotra, also a former Test player, said.

Unverified reports stated that the 1983 World Cup winner had suffered a heart attack. However, a source close to Kapil said, “The heart attack was a rumour. He is absolutely fine.”

The legendary all-rounder was wished a speedy recovery by many on social media, including India’s current captain Virat Kohli.

“Praying for your speedy recovery. Get well soon paaji,” he said.

“Wishing you a speedy recovery @therealkapildev sir. Strength always,” added India batsman Shikhar Dhawan.

“To those who have called to inquire your prayers and wishes are conveyed to the family and received with gratitude. Good health and strength kaps,” read a tweet from Kapil’s former teammate Madan Lal.

One of India’s greatest cricketers, Kapil played 131 Tests and 225 ODIs.

He is the only player in cricket’s history to claim over 400 wickets (434) and accumulate more than 5000 runs in Tests.

Kapil was inducted into the International Cricket Council’s Hall of Fame in 2010.

Get well soon legend. I wish if the players of today can learn on how to be a gentleman and polite from the likes of Kapil Dev and Gavaskar.

Wishing all the best for my all time favourite Indian cricketer.

But, what is happening these days - professional sports men are suffering/dying from cardiac attack in late 50s, early 60s!!!! Few months back Abdul Qadir, few weeks back Dean Jones... now Pajji!!!!

Wishing him well. Always came across as someone with positive vibes and was always respectful towards other countries and players.

Good to hear he's stable. Wishing for a speedy recovery and back on his feet.

Great cricketer.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Scary stuff but a sigh of huge relief.

Get well soon and stay healthy always.

One of the greatest and most iconic cricketers of all time.

Kapil Dev, he was unique. He could hit a 40 ball 80 against West Indies pace quartet and then take a 5 fer against them and take a couple of blinders in the field.

Get well soon, Paaji! BTW, it cannot be a massive heart attack. No human being survives a massive heart attack.

Probably massive in the sense that it was a complete occlusion of an artery, ie. a STEMI. With timely intervention many people survive.

On topic, get well soon paaji :salute

India cricket legend Kapil Dev has thanked everyone for the overwhelming support and wishes after he suffered a heart-attack late Thursday that required angioplasty in. Kapil is currently admitted in ICU and is recovering well.

The 61-year-old, who is lives in the Delhi, complained of chest pain following which he was rushed to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute emergency department in Okhla.

On Friday, in a short statement on his Instagram account, the legendary allrounder expressed gratitude for the concern and support extended to his family.

“Thank you everyone for all the love and concern. I am overwhelmed with the good wishes and well on the road to recovery,” the statement read.

An official statement from the hospital said Kapil is stable.

“Kapil Dev suffered a heart attack. He was evaluated and an emergency coronary angioplasty was performed in the middle of night,” the hospital said in an updated health bulletin after only mentioning chest pain in its initial statement.

“Currently, he is admitted in ICU and under close supervision of Dr Atul Mathur and his team. Kapil Dev is stable now and he is expected to get discharged in a couple of days,” it addded.

Angioplasty is a procedure to open blocked arteries and restore normal blood flow to the heart.

BCCI also posted a statement on its Twitter handle, wishing the world-cup winning captain a speedy recovery.

“Wishing the @therealkapildev a swift recovery. The nation is well aware of his grit and spirit and we are very sure he will be out of the hospital soon,” the tweet read.

Kapil is widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers to have played the game and created history when he lead India to their maiden ODI World Cup title in 1983 when they stunned then two-time defending champions West Indies at Lord’s.

After retiring, he dabbled his hands in commentary and was also the coach of the Indian team.

Kapil was inducted into the International Cricket Council’s Hall of Fame in 2010.

The reports suggest that he hasn’t had a heart attack at all (myocardial infarction, with irreversible damage of some heart muscle) but rather unstable angina (chest pain due to critical narrowing of an artery, but without permanent damage.)

His treatment was an angioplasty - use of a balloon to widen a narrowed artery, which is then held open by a stent.

“Heart attack” is a term some people use rather loosely - but no press release seems to suggest permanent infarction (death) of cardiac muscle.

To be fair, news articles often don't go into the specific details of which form of acute coronary syndrome someone presented with. As for the angioplasty, again, from my understanding, PCI is the treatment of choice for even a STEMI as long as the occlusion is limited to a single vessel.

I hope you are correct though and that it really was unstable angina.

First Dean Jones not Kapil Dev, these two were apparently very conscious about their health and fitness and worked out regularly. How come these individuals can have heart problems whereas as individuals who don't excercise, who indulge in all sorts of foods, drinks, who live life to the fullest, end up living very long lives in their 70's and even 80's?

It proves that there is no cheat code to conquering life and anything can happen to anybody at anytime.

Dean Jones was very clearly overweight. As for the rest who are still around, luck of the draw.

Hope he makes a quick and full recovery, one of my all time favorite cricketer.

I have heard one should regularly check their cholesterol and if it is found to be high, that means your chances of getting a heart attack are very high and hence you take anti cholesterol tablets to keep it under control

Family history and genetics play a big role in someone's vulnerability to hear disease . One can reduced his/her chances of getting heart disease by diet, exercise and statins( if needed ) if has bad family history. Similarly some people with good gene ( for cardiac risks ) don't get heart problem even they don;t try to avoid that .

Franky what happened to Dean Jones, is not common in developed countries. People get themselves checked on regular basis and heart problem is taken care of before it get that bad.

Legendary cricketer and former Indian captain Kapil Dev is absolutely fine now and has been discharged from the hospital after undergoing a successful angioplasty following a heart attack recently.

Former cricketer and Dev's former teammate Chetan Sharma took to his official Twitter handle to confirm the good news of the World Cup-winning skipper being discharged from the hospital.

"Good News Kapil Paji is absolutely fine & has been discharged from the hospital. Jai mata di," Sharma tweeted.

Sharma also shared a picture of Dev along with Dr. Atul Mathur who conducted angioplasty on the 61-year-old.

"Dr Atul Mathur did Kapil paji angioplasty. He is fine and discharged. Pic of @therealkapildev on time of discharge from hospital," he wrote.

Kapil Dev appeared in good health as he greeted his India team-mates from the 1983 World Cup with a video, four days after he was discharged from a hospital in New Delhi.

Kapil was in good spirits as he expressed eagerness to meet his old friends and clarified he was feeling fine. He thanked everyone for their wishes. “Thank you for your wishes once again, and your concern. I hope we will meet as soon as possible. This year is about to end, but the start will be even better. Love you all,” he said.

Kapil, 61, was admitted to the Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in New Delhi last week after having suffered a heart attack.

His condition was evaluated and an emergency coronary angioplasty was performed by Dr. Mathur, director of cardiology department at the hospital.
