Pakistan spinner Kashif Bhatti, who is part of the squad for England tour, has tested positive for novel coronavirus (Covid-19) and is currently in self-isolation.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is awaiting result of further testing, conducted by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), according to an official close to the matter.

PCB will decide on the next course of action after they have received results from the ECB.

Rookie batsman Haider Ali, pacer Imran Khan and spinner Bhatti travelled to England on July 8, after twice testing negative for Covid-19.

The trio had returned positive results twice in the PCB’s initial testing phase, which is why they were not sent with the advance group that left for England on June 28.

Old Trafford will host the first Test of the series starting on Wednesday August 5. The final two Tests will be played at the Rose Bowl from Thursday, August 13 and Friday, August 21.

The three T20Is will take place at Old Trafford on Friday, August 28, Sunday, August 30 and the final match of the tour on Tuesday, September 1.

Who else did he come in contact with? No wonder we have no updates on Haider Ali and Imran Khan either!

Was his test in Pakistan incorrect? Is the bio-secure environment not secure that he can pick this in England?

Lots of questions.

Imran Khan was in the pictures training with the team wasn't he? Don't recall seeing Haider in the pictures

God this has been a catastrophe from Pakistan. Tests positive and was training with other players. Awful stuff.

Some things in life are too good to be true. Was really looking forward to this tour and here we go the incompetent PCB with another surprise for us

What exactly have the PCB done here? At this stage when hardly anything is known, how are you so easily throwing the blame game round?

If he has returned another positive test than he must have left the bio secure environment

If this is true, there are so many questions that need to be answered. Most importantly, has Kashif been within the team's bio secure bubble since arriving, or has he tested positive before meeting up with the squad? I sincerely hope it's the latter as we can't afford to have large scale infections.

I also really hope that the Pakistani players are not breaching the bio secure protocols!!!

Didn't he recover once?

Three negatives(one by ECB) can't possibly be all false negatives

If he has returned another positive test than he must have left the bio secure environment

How? there is no evidence of the virus reinfecting those who had it once. Most probably the negative tests were wrong

Some posters earlier quoted a false negative rate ~30%. So there's an approximately 2.7% chance of 3 consecutive false negatives. Pretty low but not impossible

Was he tested positive before joining the squad or after being part of the squad?

Please confirm @Saj

Don't see that happening of three false negatives test in a row

Precisely.

He probably has a low viral load and has had two False Negatives.

Firstly, perhaps he got it during the commercial flight they used. Or at the airport.

And even if he did leave the environment, how exactly is that the PCBs fault? Is ECB to blame for Jofra leaving?

You cannot get the virus again. However the tests are very sensitive so most likely detecting remains of previous virus

Could be viral remnants from the infection. This is the most likey cause of false positives if you can classify them as such, as multiple studies have shown, most prominently from South Korea. The PCR test is highly sensitive and doesn't distinguish between active the virus or inactive viral fragments. These remnants, if that's what they are, are not infectious.

And as that Korean study demonstrated this very unlikely to be a reinfection. Infact there is no confirmed case of a reinfection as of now.

Three or four, and with that the probability of all those being false negatives is very, very miniscule.
The risk of a False Negative is 3 in 10.

So the risk of two False Negatives after a true Positive is 3/10 x 3/10 = 9/100.

Ten players out of 29 tested positive.

So the chances of one of them returning two subsequent False Negative tests was 9/100 x 10.

In other words, this was 90% likely to happen to one of the ten who tested positive originally.

Do you think the tour will proceed?

Well I've heard that he never actually joined the squad in England.

That's good news. I was worried about the tour getting cancelled if he was training with the other players.

They should just replace him with Zafar Gohar.

He was with last batch which included 3 players(Bhatti, Haider and Imran Khan) and Masseur Malang Ali.

They weren't allowed to join team for quite sometime and there were some rumours going around, seems like Imran and Haider have joined while Bhatti has been held back

Proof of life :)

Kashif Bhatti looks all set for the series.

When Bhatti and the other 3 landed in UK, there was silence from PCB regarding them joining the squad. No pictues, nothing and this explains why.

Bhatti chacha is back - definitely feel a lot more confident about Pak winning this series now

Why do people hate him so much? He has a good first class record including this season, can bat a bit and is very economical.

Any update on Haris Rauf?

Kashif Bhatti gave Pakistan Test squad a scare by testing positive for Covid after arriving in England but has been cleared

Pakistan’s topsy-turvy preparations for the Test series against England took another twist yesterday when it was revealed by the England & Wales Cricket Board that Kashif Bhatti had tested positive upon his arrival in the United Kingdom.

The left-arm spinner has now been cleared to return to the squad after undergoing a precautionary period of self-isolation.

A surprise pick for the tour, the 33-year-old, who is yet to make his international debut, had tested positive for Covid-19 in Pakistan on 23 June and was subsequently excluded from the original squad, which arrived in England five days later.

However, two further tests were undertaken in Pakistan by Bhatti on 1 and 4 July, both of which returned negative results.

Following the two negative results in Pakistan, Bhatti finally travelled to England with a delayed third batch of players consisting of pace-bowler Imran Khan, promising young batsman Haider Ali and masseur Malang Ali, and landed in England on 8 July.

However, worryingly for both ECB and PCB, his first test after his arrival in England, conducted under ECB protocols, returned a positive result.

The spinner as part of established protocol, was asked to self-isolate from the rest of the squad who were then based in Worcester, as part of their 14-day quarantine period.

Interestingly, the PCB had no qualms in announcing with great fanfare the negative test results of the initial group of players who arrived earlier in the UK, but strangely enough they were conspicuously silent about any such information when Bhatti and his 3 co-travellers arrived to join the squad, which immediately raised suspicions.

Unsurprisingly, questions have now been asked from some quarters about the efficacy of the tests which were held in Pakistan and must bring some doubt to the testing regime in place in Pakistan.

Thankfully for Pakistan, though, the player has since returned two negative tests in England with no risk of infection to other players and staff, and has been allowed to integrate and practice with the squad who are currently on the second leg of their training and practice camp in Derby.

“The player had returned a positive test result for the remnants of a previous COVID-19 infection and in consultation with Public Health England and a virologist a safety-first approach was taken to isolate the player”, an ECB spokesperson said.

Understandably, questions had been asked about Bhatti’s absence from training sessions in Worcester since his arrival on 8th July, especially since PCB-supplied pictures of the squad training together did not include the player at any time.

However, it has now come to light that he had been in self-isolation separate from the squad since his arrival. Whilst he was in the same hotel as his team-mates, he did not train with them and he travelled separately from the rest of the squad when they travelled from Worcester to Derby.

ECB have been rightfully lauded for their pioneering work in creating safe environments conducive for the resumption of cricket.

The emergence of Kashif Bhatti’s case where he was cleared in Pakistan to join his team-mates and then a few days later found to be carrying remnants of the COVID-19 virus by virtue of ECB tests is solid testimony of their protocols and procedures and for the integrity of the bio-secure environment as a whole.

Some cynicism had previously been expressed about the quality of COVID-19 testing in Pakistan and Bhatti’s subsequent positive test will undoubtedly raise some eyebrows ahead of the upcoming Test series.

To further complicate matters in terms of the public perception about the health and safety aspect of tour arrangements, the news that Jofra Archer is now self-isolating after breaching ECB’s stringent protocols and has been excluded from the ongoing second Test against West Indies could not have come at a worse time for the home-side’s cricket administrators.

For Pakistan and for the tour in general, Kashif Bhatti’s return to the fold is good news and shows that hopefully no long-lasting damage has been done to the integrity of the bio-secure environment.

here is also a sense of relief that Bhatti who was carrying remnants of an existing infection has not passed the infection to his fellow players which would have resulted in disastrous consequences for Pakistan’s preparations and possibly the tour as a whole.

The road to cricket’s rehabilitation in times of COVID-19 was always going to be a bumpy ride and the news related to Kashif Bhatti will only increase the anxiety amongst players and administrators alike. From a Pakistani perspective, the PCB may need to re-examine how they conduct testing at their end and only a careful review of procedures and protocols can allay fears of a recurrence and which could well prove disastrous for the tour of England.

I don't hate him. I just don't get the point of selecting a 35-year old spinner who is an above-average domestic performer at best - in the last QAE trophy he was the 19th highest wicket taker and not in the top 30 run scorers

To add, Zafar Gohar is ~10 years younger, was the 3rd highest wicket taker in the QAE (as opposed to Bhatti being 19), and scored more runs than Bhatti.

Ashgar is ~15 years younger than Bhatti, and was the 4th highest wicket taker in the QAE trophy

Nothing against Bhatti, but Gohar or Ashgar would have been much better selections

I think that they are binded by ECB on this, from what I have read they can't talk about the testing and niether can they go public with results, even if all turn out negative, something West Indies have done as well, remain tight lipped about the whole procedure

Performance isn't an issue with Kashif Bhatti. The reason why he didn't feature in the top of the charts for QeA 19/20 was because he didn't get to play many games, since he was with the Pakistan squad.

When he played the full season in 18/19, he was the second-highest wicket-taker behind Aizaz Cheema with 49 wickets @ 14.

But yes, he is yet to debut and is well over 30 years old. So the investment in him is questionable.

The strange thing is that it was clear that Bhatti was not training with the squad and both Boards thought it would not be noticed.

Well what do you have to say now? Maybe wait before you starting pointing fingers next time.

Well handled by ecb to not let out any detail about it. This whole episode has been going for about a little more than a week i think. No one even knew about the 3 tests which was done on bhatti till a couple of days before.

Just imagine if there were details that were out episode after episode and test after test, these threads would have been flooded and so much of bashing of Wasim khan and pcb

Well actually, people did know about it because of PCB and because of some within the touring party leaking this information.
