VfL Wolfsburg director Klaus Allofs has admitted it would have been impossible to keep Kevin De Bruyne at the club, especially after Manchester City offered to quadruple his wages.

VfL Wolfsburg director Klaus Allofs has admitted it would have been impossible to keep Kevin De Bruyne at the club, especially after Manchester City offered to quadruple his wages.

Die Wölfe sent tongues wagging in the Bundesliga after securing the services of the talented midfielder from Chelsea in the January transfer window of 2014. The surprise capture of the Belgium international was seen as a real declaration of intent from the team based in Lower Saxony.

The following season, De Bruyne played a crucial role in midfield as VfL Wolfsburg finished runners-up in the Bundesliga and won the DFB-Pokal.

He also played the full 90 minutes as Wolfsburg defeat Bayern on penalties to claim the 2015 DFL-Supercup at the start of August.

De Bruyne was undeniably a crucial player for VfL Wolfsburg and while they were willing to offer him more money, they could not match the lucrative wages being offered by the Citizens.

"We spent a long time weighing up all our options and trying to keep Kevin at Wolfsburg," Allofs told Die Welt. "But at some point, we reached the conclusion that it would be best to allow him to move.

"When a player has an offer from another team where can make four times as much money, you have to take into account what such an offer does to a player.

"Kevin received an offer that could very well be a once in a lifetime opportunity. There is no guarantee that he would ever get such a offer again.

"We have certain limits that teams like Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona or Bayern Munich do not have. It is totally unrealistic to claim that nobody can lure players away from us."

He is a world class player and his comeback would surely be a huge boost for Manchester City. He made his presence felt in his comeback game with an assist during City win over Huddersfield.

Kevin de Bruyne has broken an assist record.

This is the 18th time he's assisted more than one goal in a Premier League game. More times than any player in the competition's history.

Belgium midfielder Kevin de Bruyne is expected to extend his Manchester City contract, despite the 32-year-old's advisors holding meetings with clubs in Saudi Arabia.

De Bruyne 'open to everything' amid Saudi links

Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne has said he is "open to everything" as he discussed the possibility of a move to Saudi Arabia.

The Belgian playmaker, 32, has one year left on his contract at City where he has won six Premier League titles and the Champions League since joining in 2015.

De Bruyne said the "incredible" contracts on offer in the Saudi Pro League could be appealing towards the end of his career, and explained he had discussed his future with his wife.

"For Michele, an exotic adventure is OK. These are also conversations that we are increasingly having as a family," De Bruyne told Belgian broadcaster VTM, according to newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws., external

"I still have one year of contract, so I have to think about what can happen.

"My eldest [child] is now eight years old and knows nothing but England. He also asks how long I will play at City. Once the time comes, we will have to deal with it in a certain way.

"At my age, you have to be open to everything. You talk about unbelievable amounts in what may be the end of my career. Sometimes you have to think about that."

De Bruyne said that should he spend two years in Saudi Arabia, he would be "able to earn an incredible amount of money".

The Belgium captain, who is preparing for Euro 2024, missed almost five months of last season because of injury as City won their fourth consecutive league title, playing just 26 games in all competitions.

Frustrated De Bruyne says Belgium 'have to be better'

Kevin de Bruyne says Belgium have to "be better in every way" after they were beaten comfortably by France in the Nations League on Monday.

The Manchester City midfielder said he had let his team-mates know "what went wrong" during a charged exchange at half-time.

Belgium are third in League A Group 2, level on three points with France.

De Bruyne conceded the side are not as good as they were in 2018, when they reached the semi-finals of the World Cup, but added: "Other things are unacceptable. I'm not going to say what."

Belgium opened their Nations League campaign with a 3-1 win against Israel - with De Bruyne scoring twice. But after starting brightly against France, they fell behind to goals by Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembele.

Speaking to Belgian broadcaster VTM after the 2-0 defeat, De Bruyne would not elaborate on what was said during his half-time team talk.

"I cannot repeat that in the media but it has to be better in every way," said the 33-year-old.

"If the standard we want to reach is the best, but we're no longer good enough to get to that level, then you have to give everything.

"If you don't even do that, it's over."

De Bruyne did, however, highlight what he feels is a weakness in Belgium's style of play.

"If you stay with six at the back, there is no connection," he added. "It is what it is.

"It is not about transition, but about people who do not perform their tasks."

Belgium head coach Domenico Tedesco said he could see why De Bruyne was frustrated with the performance.

"He is our captain and has a huge winning mentality, so he can also react emotionally," said Tedesco.

Kevin De Bruyne a doubt to face Arsenal due to groin injury in draw with Inter

Kevin De Bruyne is an injury doubt for Manchester City’s showdown with Arsenal on Sunday after suffering what appeared to be a groin injury in the Champions League goalless draw with Inter at the Etihad Stadium.

The Belgian was hurt when running in on goal and being challenged by Yann Sommer, the Inter No 1, during the first half, afterwards seeming to clutch his groin area. Following treatment De Bruyne continued until the break but was then taken off.

Guardiola was asked if the 33-year-old will be available for Arsenal’s visit. “I don’t know, I will have more info tomorrow [Thursday]. The doctor said to me he was not ready to play [in the second half].”

Despite being only the fifth match of their championship defence City’s hosting of Arsenal is pivotal as Mikel Arteta’s team are second on 10 points, two behind Guardiola’s side, having finished second to them in the past two seasons.

Rodri made a first start of the season versus Inter, while the second-half substitute Phil Foden is yet to play a full 90 minutes. Kyle Walker did not feature against the Italian champions, and though Ilkay Gündogan was a replacement, he and Walker’s only start was Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Brentford.

With Nathan Aké injured, Guardiola was asked if facing Arsenal so early in the season may catch them when his side might be undercooked.

“Maybe,” he said. “But it is what is. I don’t control the schedule.”

Guardiola was, though, content with City’s display against Inter despite the dropped points. “We played so good,” he said. “I love my team – we are a fantastic team. Inter are the masters of defending and in transition they are really strong as well.

“I’m really pleased with the performance we did. It is the beginning of the season so these players will be better.”

Guardiola is yet to decide if he will sign a new contract, his current terms expiring next June. He was asked if coaching an Italian team would interest him. “Italy is fantastic but I love it here, because English football is so good,” said the City manager. “You can coach without having too much pressure and because the club is great.”

Man City's De Bruyne asks to miss Belgium matches

Belgium captain Kevin de Bruyne has asked for time off from the national team as the Manchester City playmaker looks to manage his playing time.

The 33-year-old has missed City's past four fixtures after sustaining a thigh injury in September's 0-0 draw against Inter Milan in the Champions League.

De Bruyne, who is on course to return to action in mid-October, was set to be left out of Belgium's Nations League squad for matches against Italy and France later this month through injury.

But Belgium boss Domenico Tedesco says De Bruyne has requested to miss November's matches against Italy and Israel in addition to October's matches.

"I had a long phone conversation with Kevin," said Tedesco.

"He has asked to skip this camp and also November, to be able to take care of his body.

"The schedule has become even busier due to the World Cup for clubs. That is why he is not there now and in November. But when it really counts - the World Cup - he will be there."

Rodri, De Bruyne's club team-mate, said in September that players were close to striking in protest at the increased playing schedule.

De Bruyne raised questions over his international future following a 2-0 loss to France on 9 September.

However, Tedesco says De Bruyne remains committed to playing for his country.

"He has an injury, but he is very motivated to continue with the Red Devils and to play the World Cup in 2026," Tedesco said.
