Debuted around same time. KP and Clarke peaked early. AB peaked till late.

While AB is clearly superior in ODIs, this is close in tests. Who do you think is a better batsmen overall?

In ODIs it isn't close.

In tests I'll rank them like this,

KP
Michael Clarke
ABD

In tests its KP, then AB then the vastly overrated Clarke.

Overall, taking into account all formats its a no brainer for AB.

They are all good batsman. ABDV has less weakness or demons. KP had this demons against left arm spinners. Clarke has his own nightmares against spin and swing. But overall all 3 are great batsmen. I love to watch KP though as his feet movement is a delight to watch.

Clarke was excellent against spin. Especially for someone outside the subcontinent...

KP was a beast... if he would have been playing international he would have been ahead of ABD... but Right now ABD is ahead of all

Clarke definitely better than KP.

Clarke averages below 40 outside Aus. Only other player to have such low average is probably Jaya only.

Clarke and Jaya are biggest home track bullies world has ever seen.

ABDV and KP are way ahead.

Clarke
Home avg: 62
Outside home: 39

ABDV
Home avg: 46
Outside home: 51

KP

Home: 53
Outside home: 42

Clarke is no Jayawardene with the bat.

He played crucial role in Australia's series win in India in 2004 and has played two of his most gritty knocks in SA..

He did play good knocks everywhere, but apart from those knocks he used to go missing in all other innings. That's why you see his records with avg around 40 or below 40.

Clarke's average away from home was decent until his last few years where he was playing as a cripple.

It was 38 till 2009 SA series. Then he had 2 good series, when his avg went up to 45 and after that it again went down and remained around 40.

Clarke has done well in many away series.

2004/05 in India - avg 57

2009 in Eng - avg 64

2009/10 in NZ - avg 86

2008 in WI - avg 56

20013/14 in SA - 55

Clarke played in 2015 when he shouldn't have played, Clarke was very consistent in scoring away runs. Here is Clarke's record till 2014,

You could rely on Clarke to score some runs in pretty much all venues. Not many batsmen averaged around 40 or more in all venues. Clarke did that till his last year. Jaya and Clarke are not at the same level.

Do you realize that 40 average outside , specially if you are averaging 40 in all venues, is a very good record? If you average 20s in 3 venues and then that's a poor record with aggregate average of 40. But averaging around 40 in all venues is very good record. It means that you don't have few venues where you are unable to score. Not a dominating record, but a very good record and not sure why any batsman will be criticized for that.

After seeing these stats I'll change my order

Clarke >KP>ABD

I think Clarke's last year in international cricket changed people's perception of him.

It's a comparison thread where ABDV has average 40+ in all countries with overall away average 10 points higher than Clarke.

Same goes for KP who has done well in all types of conditions. Be it rank turners or swinging conditions.

What's the point of mentioning hypothetical scenarios of 20 avg in 3 countries when none of them fit that?

Exactly. KP could have been a second Lara, if he wasn't so inconsistent and was less of a jerk. Clarke however, averages 39 in away matches which is pretty rubbish.

It was in context of classifying Clarke with Jaya earlier. Jaya averaged in 20-30 in Aus, Eng, SA, Eng, UAE. Clarke and Jaya have totally different performance when playing away. Jaya still have average of 39 outside of SL, but he had hard time scoring anything in too many venues.

As far as KP goes, KP in UAE(11), SA(25), Pakistan(33) -- but my comment was not really while comparing Clarke with KP.

There is not much to separate them in tests.I would say

KP -8/10
Clarke - 8/10
AB -7.5/10( if he didn't took a break he would have been 8 till now)

But it's ODIs where AB is so far ahead TR that it's not even funny. So overall, it's AB.

KP - actual tumour to the team. Failure as Captain.
AB - massive squib. Failure a Captain.
Clarke - Carried a really bad Australian team as Captain to a world cup win and a 5-0 Ashes win.

But those who watch cricket off cricinfo scorecards will never understand.

All three were brilliant but if I had to pick one it will AB De Villiers
