At a time when the Centre is embroiled in a kerfuffle with microblogging site Twitter over blocking of certain accounts, several ministers and departments of the Union government have started flocking on Koo App — a homemade version of the social networking platform.

Who is behind the Koo App?

The microblogging site was co-founded by entrepreneurs Aprameya Radhakrishna and Mayank Bidwatka. Radhakrishna had founded online cab booking service TaxiForSure, which was subsequently sold to Ola Cabs. Prior to Koo, its parent company — Bombinate Technologies Pvt Ltd — launched and is operating the Indian version of Quora called Vokal. According to data sourced from Crunchbase, the company raised Series A funding in 2018 from a clutch of investors including Blume Ventures, Kalaari Capital and Accel Partners India. In the latest round of funding announced earlier this month, former Infosys CFO TV Mohandas Pai’s 3one4 Capital also joined the list of those investing in Bombinate Technologies

Its pretty obvious, china has won , the Chinese model is the way to go for entire world.

Ban Free speech or tilt it towards the majority propaganda.

A few corporations cannot decide what is free speech and control the narrative. What twitter did in US during and after the elections, it has raised the eyebrows of governments across the world.

French President Macron mentioned it too.

The laws regarding the limit of free speech and censorship is the domain of the elected representatives of the people or the government. The likes of twitter has to obey the law of the land

Pragya Sadhvi is elected MP of BJP and is not jailed for hate speech .

Please don’t talk about law of the land that is “jiski laathi uska law”.

Your Indira-Modi law is not how land of law is implemented across the world.

There should be internet visa. eg one has to apply for Pakistani Internet Visa to be able to log on to Pakistani websites, and of course, permission from your own government.

More like the Indian version of Parler - the alt right social networking app

The problem arises when these corporate actors become bigger than some of the states willing to control them or restrict their actions.

If these companies are able to leverage their resources and get their way then not much can be done.

And then conservatives created Parler to replace Twitter, but Google and Apple banned it from their network.

So a few corporation can decide what is free speech. What can India do if Google and Apple ban Koo?

If one has to decide what is free speech, then it is not free speech.

Agreed. But the point was if Google and Apple ban Koo, not much Modi can do.

right. Only US can control them, but big tech has played its cards well for now.

Also funny how proponents of free speech (usually pseudos who hide behind liberal virtue signalling) have no problem with free speech being censored if they disagree with that speech.

While that they can do in US, in India what govn’t threatens to ban Google lol?

Google is a foreign business entity and either should comply with state laws or challenge it in court. But you clearly disagree with it and enjoy that some private entity is stronger than a constitutionally and democratically elected sovereign government.

lol unsurprising that it is being backed by all the right :rabada2 people including Pai.

Also unsurprising therefore how unoriginal it is, even in its logo. A koo koo bird :)))

I don’t, I don’t support Parler being taken off as well.

I’m all for absolute freedom of speech, you aren’t so please don’t play devil’s advocate.

I dont think even the US govt can threaten Google. Unless they break it up.

It was like 8 years back that Google and the other tech firms helped kill SOPA and PIPA.

In India I meant , google can be banned if they take off Koo from GCP or Amazon can be if they take em off AWS.

Actually I also support absolute free speech, but want people to be accountable for what they speak. There should be one login to be used across all social media, and linked with govt ID.

Android and iOS have a 99% market share. If both of them banned Koo, and the Indian government bans them, what will Indians use then?

Dont think any government can do that, especially for one app.

And what about the businesses who use google or amazon? They shouldn't be banned, but their officials must face the consequences for not following the laws.

Your Indira-Modi law is not how land of law is implemented across the world.

I live in India and what matters to me is what is the law here. Anyone staying or operating here has to obey the laws.

You liking not liking the law or its implementation doesn't matter, unless you are willing to file a case and challenge the law in court.

And then conservatives created Parler to replace Twitter, but Google and Apple banned it from their network.

Heavy fines will be imposed on Google and Apple. Koo can move court to get itself restored on those platforms.

Google and Apple follow the law of the land, like they allow all chinese apps on their platform. Like they banned tik tok etc when asked by the indian government.

Corporations cannot and will not be able to sit on judgement on freedom of speech in a country. They cannot take on the might of a big state. If someone like Twitter, which by its own admission has a leftist bias, thinks it can do so, well then they are in for nasty surprises.

They can be arm twisted into following the law. If a Indian court orders them to restore Koo and they refuse, it will reverberate around the world how these corporations think they are above others.

As i said, many nations are looking at the behaviour of these corporations, some like Macron even mentioned it.

Seems like the RW couldn't handle the heat on Twitter. Would be great if all IT cell sadhakchaps and their Gods move to this trashy app and stay there.

Twitter isn't above the constitution you know.

After govt issues under 69A of the IT act, twitter has only 3 options,

1. Follow the order.
2. Challenge it in a court.
3. Pack its bags as the govt takes action against it.

Its one thing to lock up journalist that no one knows about but to arrest Twitter executives who are "championing free speech" would bring negative publicity to a whole new level.

Twitter knows this and is playing the waiting game.

They can champion whatever they want. They have to follow the law. No amount of whining by activists in the west will be able to counter the nationalistic narrative that Bjp will fan in India.

Nah..the BJP is especially conscious of its image in the west. The MEA statement within hours of Rihanna's tweet suggests so.
Arresting twitter executives will only lead to negative publicity that BJP would like to stay away from.
I dont expect them to go ahead with it, max they can do is promote this mediocre alternative.

Google and Apple are way more powerful than Twitter. Most likely Koo will see what happened to Parler, and make sure their users who call for and incite violence are removed from the platform.

Half of the people in the most powerful country in the world supported Trump, and nothing happened after he was banned for life from Twitter, and nothing happened when the conservative alternative was deplatformed.

The precedent has been set. If people anywhere try to pull a stunt like what happened in Washington, then they will be banned, or that app gets deplatformed.

Yes they think they are above others, and many countries dont like their behavior, but so far they have not been able to do much against them. They have a lot of money, they can influence public opinion. here in the US they were able to kill SOPA/PIPA even though politicians from both parties wanted it. If anything they will be the ones twisting arms, unless the US takes action against them. They are the only country that can.

It's early days, it has only been a few months since the elections. Trump is likely planning his next move. Wait at least a year before passing judgement.

India threatens Twitter chiefs with jail over farmer protests

India Twitter executives have been threatened with jail in India as a row escalates over its refusal to remove accounts that the government says have incited violence in mass protests by farmers.

The government of Narendra Modi, the prime minister, has ordered Twitter to remove more than 1,100 accounts it says spread misinformation and inflammatory content in support of demonstrations by tens of thousands of farmers seeking to overturn agriculture laws passed last year.

Freedom of speech only exists if Indians tow the line with Saffron terrorists.

Lol...liberals are dreaming all sane voices will migrate to Koo and they will continue to peddle their false propaganda in twitter. It is unfortunately not going to happen as Indian govt is contemplating a ban on twitter like tik tok & pubg. Its a new and atmanirbhar bharat where make in India apps will take precedence.

Twitter is too big for Modi to ban. There's a reason why China, Iran and N.Korea are the only countries in the world to outright ban it.

twitter is not too big. The reason it cannot be banned because it is the lapdog of democrats who are in power now, and indian govt bows to US, no matter who is in power.

Best of luck for this app. Hopefully soon we get a kootube to really put these big tech giants in there place.

There is a big buzz for Kootube in Britain. I personally know many people who have deleted their twitters and are looking to sign up ASAP.

By now (after 7 years) you should have known that Modi does what he believes best for the country. He is no Nehru to take a step back thinking of repurcussions or what western world will think. Same was said about article 370 and how its too big for any govt to repeal it, remember? Twitter is getting banned in India soon...mark this post.

Who care about the what the west thinks .. seems you are prjecting your own fears here. A twitter ban
would be easiest political lifeline given to the ailing Congress. A huge chunk of the middle class (domestic and expats) use Twitter daily, it isn't some unknown chinese entity like TikTok.

Also lol at the first line.

Well I have heard they are also working on Whatsapp alternative. App name is : Sandes (means message in hindi) :inti

Sandes, India's answer to WhatsApp, being tested by govt officials: report

Government officials have reportedly started using an Indian alternative to WhatsApp, which goes by the name of Sandes. Back in 2020, the Centre had revealed plans to develop a WhatsApp-like messaging platform. Apparently, the application is ready and is being tested by officials in several ministries.

Officials have already started using the GIMS, an abbreviation for Government Instant Messaging System, according to a Business Standard report. This system has been christened Sandes, as confirmed by the official GIMS website, gims.gov.in. This is not to be confused with existing applications with similar names, like Sandesh.

Twitter deplatformed Trump after his presidency was over. RW in India isnt going out of power anytime soon. They may lose power in one state, will get power in another. They will always have significant power in India.

India doesn't work like USA, here state holds a lot of power, it can cripple a business if it wants by a single order and the law allows it.

Executives in jail. Accounts frozen. Legal hassles. There are a lot of ways to maje twitter go by itself.

New Delhi: The co-founder and chief executive of microblogging website Koo said the latest funding for the company "is led by a truly Indian investor" as the website gains traction amid the row between the government and Twitter.
Koo co-founder Aprameya R also said a firm, Shunwei, which had invested in a vernacular question and answer sharing app "Vokal" owned by the same company that runs Koo, "will be exiting fully".

Vokal had raised funds from China-based Shunwei Capital in 2018.

Both Koo and Vokal are run by Bombinate Technologies Pvt Ltd.

The government's several ministries and departments have opened verified accounts on Koo and posted official statements - similar to what they have been doing on Twitter - in response to a blog post by Jack Dorsey's company on its policies over closing and blocking accounts and taking down content.

"Koo is an India registered company with Indian founders. Raised earlier capital 2.5 years ago. Latest funds for Bombinate Technologies is led by a truly Indian investor 3one4 capital. Shunwei (single digit shareholder) which had invested in our Vokal journey will be exiting fully," Aprameya R tweeted.

Koo has been praised by some on social media as India's answer to "foreign" Twitter playing the class monitor on its network. Those who claim Twitter has been biased in regulating content have led the call to join Koo in big numbers.

"A set of Indian entrepreneurs are seen to be investing in Koo with Ashish Hemrajani from BookMyShow, Vivekananda from Bounce and Nikhil Kamat of Zerodha, among others, entering the cap table of the company," Koo said in a statement today. "It is a clear indication that the company is getting more and more Indian money into the company," it said.

"The recent investment of $4.1 million in Bombinate Technologies - Koo's parent company - was led by 3one4 Capital, an Indian investor. Shunwei had not participated in the latest round of funding. Shunwei that had invested in the company for the earlier product Vokal which answers user questions in Indian languages, will be exiting fully with the new investors buying their stake. Existing investors including 3one4 Capital, Kalaari and others will also be buying out some of the stakes," the company said in the statement. "Koo is a fully aatmanirbhar app with Indian founders and India registration," it said.

Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today told parliament that strict action will be taken if social media is misused to spread fake news and fuel violence. Specifically naming Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn in Rajya Sabha, the Union Minister said "you have millions of followers in India, you are free to do business and make money, but you will have to follow the Indian Constitution".

The centre and Twitter have engaged in some sharp exchanges for the past few days over the issue of free speech and its legal limits in the country.

The sooner we have Indian alternatives the better. Hopefully a large percentage of Indian social media users will park themselves over there and we will be shot of them. Although if that was likely, would we have so many Indians ( who we love) on PP? I think they will always want to interract with the outside word so they can learn words like "whining" and use them ad nauseum.

I may create an Indian Pakpassion. There is a huge Indian market that dont watch Pakistani cricket but post on forums and if we can even tap into 10% of these guys it can be very successful.

Well most of our fans like to show off in front of Pakistani fans whether it is BCCI's money, IPL cheerleaders, or our series win in Australia. If we do it in our own forums in front of other indians it will get pretty boring and the admin of that website will not be able to pay even the hosting charges let alone making profit.

Another thing is most of the indian website don't welcome or don't have a big heart to let Pakistanis speak their mind on Indian stuff. They will be banned immediately if they cross the line. Now compare that to some indian fans who can even make fun of, curse or badmouth Pakistan here and still not get banned. You will find plenty of them who don't see Pakistan as a country, their citizens as human beings but still come here to discuss everyday things with them. Shows their hypocrisy and obsession pretty clearly here. :inti

Please ban Twitter in India. :usman

No they should not especially after Koo app has been found of leaking users data.

Koo app found to be leaking sensitive users data, China connection surfaces

The French security researcher who earlier made news in India by highlighting security loopholes in Aadhaar has now taken a look at the Koo app and has found that the app is leaking sensitive user data including date of birth and email id.

As Koo gains momentum -- three million downloads in the last 24 hours or so -- as many in India believe that they should be using a desi aka Atmanirbhar app, the app has also started attracting scrutiny. How safe is it? That is the question. According to a French security researcher, Koo is not very safe, and currently, it is leaking a lot of sensitive user information including email ID, phone numbers and date of birth.

French cybersecurity researcher Robert Baptiste, popularly known as Elliott Anderson on Twitter, has looked at Koo and has found that it is leaking some user data. Baptiste earlier grabbed headlines after highlighting several vulnerabilities in the Aadhaar system. He has also highlighted a number of security bugs and vulnerabilities in other tech services.

Update: Reacting to the data leaks, Koo has said, "Users enter their profile data on the app to be shared with others on the platform. That's what's displayed everywhere across the platform. While there have been false allegations of a data leak, it's just commonly called the public profile page for all users to view!”

Talking about the Chinese investment, the company in a statement said, "Koo takes pride in being an Indian company with Indian founders and in being registered here. The recent investment in Bombinate Technologies Koo’s parent company was by Mohandas Pai of 3one4 Capital, an Indian investor. Shunwei, a single-digit shareholder that had invested in Vokal, another start-up of ours which answers user questions in Indian languages, will be exiting fully. Bombinate is the parent company of Vokal and Koo."

Last night, Baptiste tweeted: "You asked so I did it. I spent 30 min on this new Koo app. The app is leaking personal data of its users: email, dob, name, marital status, gender."

If we go by the screenshots he has shared, it is clear that Koo is leaking some sensitive details and it is possible that data of millions of users have already been leaked or scrapped, including data of Indian government departments and ministers who have joined the service.

Screenshot_2021-02-11_at_8.49.-1200x1566.png

After Twitter refused to block accounts of journalists, politicians, and activists tweeting on farmers' protests, a push has been started by many to an Atmanirbhar social media app. Now, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and other government departments have verified handles on Koo.

"I am now on Koo. Connect with me on this Indian micro-blogging platform for real-time, exciting and exclusive updates. Let us exchange our thoughts and ideas on Koo,” minister Piyush Goyal said on Twitter recently.

Baptiste is not the only one who has found a bug. Replying to his tweet, another user noted: "It's storing user tokens as frontend global variables if you know the token info of a user. go to /create you can directly put values in here, with inspecting mode which I think will enable the compose button, and you can remotely tweet to that account with the token info."

Screenshot_2021-02-11_at_8.28.-1200x1848.png

Chinese connection? Yes and no

Baptiste also shared the Whois record for the domain Kooapp.com, which shows a Chinese connection, but that is not entirely accurate. The domain details that Baptiste shared a part of the historical ownership of the domain. The record reveals that it was created close to four years ago and since then has changed hands several times. Its latest owner, which is Bombinate Technologies Private Limited, came to own it only in late 2019. Bombinate is the company behind Koo.

It is worth noting that it is not unusual for domain addresses to change hands and it is entirely possible that the domain which is currently used by an NGO in the past belonged to a company selling illegal drugs.

But there is a Chinese connection to the Koo app, and this is a small investment in the company by Shunwei. Connected to Xiaomi, Shunwei is a venture capital fund, which invests in startups. However, now that Koo is pitching itself as a total Atmanirbhar app, it says that Shunwei would be existing the company and would sell its stake soon. The Koo co-founder on Wednesday tweeted, "Koo is an India registered company with Indian founders. Raised earlier capital 2.5 years ago. The latest funds for Bombinate Technologies are led by a truly Indian investor 3one4 capital. Shunwei (single-digit shareholder) which had invested in our Vokal journey will be exiting fully.

Screenshot_2021-02-11_at_8.28._0-1200x1848.png

There also seems to be confusion about the app's real Twitter account. While people have so far been believing that the Koo app is tweeting from @kooappofficioal, its co-founder Aprameya Radhakrishna last night said that the official account of Koo on Twitter is at @kooindia. He tweeted, "The official account of #kooapp is @kooindia. Please note."

I hope people use their mind, look at the features, security, how big a company is and it's brand value before getting into this aatamnirbhar B$. :inti

Will we be lucky enough to see 99.9% of Twitter's garbage moving enmasse to this new platform, led by their god?

Quite a few people, including some union ministers have already migrated to this new surveillance tool.

Heard Kangana too will be moving there shortly. Twitter will be immensely pleased when that happens.

People will decide whether the App will survive. Its always good to have some local competition to the global giants.

Whats the competitor to Android and iOS?

To everything else that Google and Apple do, yes their are competitors. However i feel you are underestimating the power that holding the keys to the platform gives Google and Apple.

Creating an account on another platform is not migration, unless they delete/deactivate their accounts on Twitter too. Basic stuff.

I'm sure a minority of sanghis do care about their privacy on an atmanirbhar app. So I hope the "engineers" at Koo can sort the data leakage problem. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Future atmanirbhar ventures..

Gogo search engine

poor nomenclature aside, self reliance in technology cannot be disputed, but the execution should be good. e.g visa and mastercard are american companies, but every time a payment happens in india with credit card, they get a cut. So much money could have stayed in india. This is just one example.

Forget Android and iOS, ask this Napa guy to name at least two Indian brands who can make phones like Redmi, Huawei etc. Guys like him leave India for USD and then talk about becoming Aatmanirbhar. If he can't do that then ask him to settle in India because Modi isn't Trump lol. Bunch of hypocrites. :inti
