Kusal Perera - Sri Lanka's solid batter

There is something about him no doubt, some of his shots are very Jayasuriya like but still early days lets see how he does as the ball isn't moving it seems like a flat deck and the Indian trundlers can make anyone look like Bradman when the ball isn't moving.

Yea i too see Jayasuriya touch in his shots. Seems like he will be in lanka batting line up for long time.

Has made a 336 in 270 odd balls in domestic which shows he can play long innings as well.

He started as a right hander but then switched to left hand during the days of Jayasuriya as he started having him as a role model. Some of his shots are a lot similar to jayasuriya, specially the pull and shots on the off side. He isnt a great player of spin, so we l have to see how he copes against ashwin and amit warne mishra

I just tuned in the warm up match. And they were showing the highlights of his 50. And man, i thought it was Jayasuriya playing. He looks special. He was hitting them with style and elegance.

He played some mind blowing strokes today. That pull to Ishant Sharma went like a rocket :O. And yes he is a little weak against spin bowling. But this guy ia talent to watch out for.

Sri Lanka have effectively discovered their "Master Blaster #2" .

See the similarity between OLD Sanath and NEW Sanath.

Have to agree with this. I notice a lot of similarities with him and Jayasuriya. He is going to be their next big star for sure.

He looked to Sanath as an inspiration. Let's just hope he produces the same results Sanath did

he has really improved. How come he failed against average bowlers but performed against us

Failed? He maid 50 against Aus in T20 and slaughtered the Bangladeshi Bowling while playing well against SA's T20 unit. I don't call that failed against average bowlers.

Just like Darren Bravo is/was the next lara?

Let Kushal make a name for himself and not call him the next Jayasuriya. Jayasuriya redefined ODI batting in 1995/96.

At the age of 22 - Sanath was a bowler who could bat a lil bit at no.6 or 7.

At the age of 22 - Kusal opens the innings and blasts the bowlers like Sanath at his prime. :16:

He is defintly one for future :) anyways he is quite lucky not to face :irfan in this whole tour

After having seen him dispatching the Junaid n co. into orbit, I think that Irfan is the lucky one to escape from the Kusal-onslaught. :hamster:

he should try to become the next sangakkara rather than jayasuriya to be honest

Reminded me of sanath

Just needs to lose his hair and grow a bit of tummy :D

Sanath was not that good batsmen.

his bowling was effective and combination kept him in the team.

LOL I called him hack from the beginning and today proved it....he's a fragment of what jayasuriya was when jaya was when he was only in his 20s
Slogger...

Needs to bat against Shahadat and Rubel to get his groove back.

Who is more exciting among the young crop? He's sensational to watch in flow.

de Kock comes close though.

Rahane and Smith are not exciting at all.

Rahane is a classical batsman and Smith is a grinder.

yeah true actually but they are gonna succeed more than this hack...Both are potential 50 averagers.
Some may disagree but Sohaib Maqsood in full flow is a beast.

Maqsood is an excellent timer. He's good to watch.

Perera is a gifted player, no doubt about but looks like he has zero temperament.

Sharjeel Khan is better than this lil hack. Yep I went there :afridi:

Both are similar. Sharjeel is a talented batsman.

Cheers for that :14:
The thing about batsmen like these are that they can take it to bowlers and are fearless...They may be successfull they may not but they are players who need long runs...However I'd have Sharjeel over Kusal 9/10 times

Explosive openers come with a baggage. You have to take the good with the bad.

Some are good, Some aren't. I believe Perera is in the Awais Zia category whilst Sharjeel is in the David Warner, Shikar Dhawan and Sehwag category.
Every team is opting for one defensive and one attacking opener...which is why I actually want Sharjeel in tests too which could be a gamble..
Dhawan/Vijay
Warner/Rogers
Sehwag/Gambhir
Shehzad/Sharjeel

Sharjeel should first establish himself in limited overs.

If Jamshed can regain his form, he can be a very solid number 3 to compliment the opening duo of Sharjeel and Shehzad.

lol are you seriously agreeing cos both Jamshed and Sharjeel are supposed to be fat, techniqueless hacks? What about Umar Amin...how will he come into play then?
He should once he's given the backing and confidences...I can almost guarantee it.

Umar Amin can play anywhere in the top 4. I would prefer him to open but it doesn't matter as long as he's in the top 4.

Jamshed is technically good and a very nice timer.

Jamshed has a major problem with fishing outside off stump...He like Sharjeel both have poor footwork and rely on handeye co ordination...This is why they should stick to being aggressive so they don't get exposed.

Can't hide his innings after this win...was very poor.

He was given direct orders t get his team off to a flyer.

I wish our openers had the balls and the courage and the selflessness to do that for the team.

The ball he got out on wasn't there to be pulled that's all.

Sharjeel Khan? Wasn't he the opener who got was the reason[along with Shehzad] we got off to a flyer vs India in the Asia Cup...Or how about his run a ball 61 which ended up with us setting a 320+ targer?
Perera is a poor mans David Warner so far, not saying he couldn't improve.

Sharjeel has the right idea. It's a power play. You only have 20 overs to bat. The field is in. If you're not going aerial then go home.

poor mans david warner ? kusal is only 23..He more talented than Warner and will become a better batsman than him as well within next 2 years

I cannot see the guy putting up the kind of Test Match innings that Warner has been managing, for one thing.

+ this is only Kusal`s first year of international cricket...He has it in him to be a devastating batsman in future

needs to work on his techinic like most asian players he will look like a million dollars on flat asian tracks, but will be tested alot more against shortball and moving ball.

When he can make 2 100s in the same game against Dale Steyn and co in their backyard then come back. Sharjeel is more talented than him and if he had even the SL management, he would become a destructive opener too.

Lol Kusal Perera has scored more important runs for SL in places like Au . And have you seen him bat its not slogging its timing and pure striking. Kusal could be the next Jayasuriya.

Sharjeel is a glorified hack who can score a quick 20 and gets out he cant play the inswinging ball at all he was eaten alive by Malinga in the asia cup and last odi series where that weakness was exploited, yes Sharjeel can work on his weaknesses and come back a better player, but at the moment Kusal Perera is comfortably better.

I didn`t say Kusal is better than Warner I said he`ll become better in future !!

Kusal is more lot more talented than Sharjeel Khan..!!

Then again, they have all been against opponents who have weaker seam bowling, which is his strength. A great prospect no doubt, but his ability to give fielders dollies needs to stop. His shot judgement is seriously hurting his game.

He scored well against SA including Dale Steyn..looked good even Australia against the likes of Mitch Johnson

Yea he needs to sharpen bit more but this is just the start

What a classy batsman this guy is showing his class against southee and boult in first clt20 match.

This guy was dropped after poor display in SA. 7,6,0,12 back in 2016. Then early last year flunked in West Indies in all 3 tests with 6,0,12,32,20,0,28. Played against Australia this year and made 29* and 0. He was not exactly in the middle of a purple patch or anything. This was an out of the blue innings from him.

Has lived off that 153 vs South Africa for too long. Averages 22 since then.

Disgusting dismissals in all four innings.

Kusal Perera rides his luck and scores his 6th ODI ton today against Bangladesh.
He was dropped thrice including the one on previous ball when on 99.

Quality player who has underachieved . Hopefully captaincy brings some consistency from him.

God knows how many new Malingas, Sangas, Vaases, Ranatungas, Muralis have emerged in the past few years for them yet they are at the rock bottom.

For reference (July, 2022):

Colombo, Jul 25 (IANS): Sri Lanka Cricket board on Monday issued a clarification regarding the news that the board has refused to bear the cost of Kusal Perera's shoulder surgery.

Several media reports said that 'SLC refused to bear the surgery cost of Kusal Perera's shoulder injury'.

"Sri Lanka Cricket in consultation with the SLC Medical Panel worked out a 12-week Rehabilitation Program for Kusal Janith Perera's recovery from a long-standing shoulder injury to ensure that the player is ready for selections for the T20I Asia Cup and the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022," the SLC said in a release.

"Towards meeting this goal, Sri Lanka Cricket advised Kusal Janith Perera to refrain from playing any competitive cricket and undergo the proposed 'Rehabilitation Program,' under the supervision of the SLC Medical panel. The SLC also advised the player that postponing the rehabilitation program may negatively affect his injury," the board said.

However, instead of heeding the advice of the SLC, the player took part in the Lanka Premier League 2021, thus affecting his recovery program.

"Even after his participation in the Lanka Premier League 2021, Sri Lanka Cricket's Medical Panel decided to rehabilitate the player, focusing on the upcoming T20i Asia Cup and the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, thus leaving him out from several international tours, which was played during the recent months," the board added.

However, Sri Lanka Cricket has informed Kusal Janith Perera that despite this situation, a major portion of the cost required for his surgery will be borne by Sri Lanka Cricket.

Perera initially injured his shoulder during the limited overs series against India in July last year. However he continued to play against South Africa's, in the T20 World Cup, and the 2nd season of the Lanka Premier League. He hasn't featured for Sri Lanka since the World Cup.

Kusal Perera has scored a blistering 50 off 22 balls aginst New Zealand today. What a superb innings and he is still on the crease and looking like he is in a mood to go big here.

Kind of insult to jaysuria. One is a feared opener and a great of tye game and arguably atg( imo he's not an atg for me, but if people put jaysuria as an atg I don't mind)

The other is a hack who's only good for a quick fire start. He ain't making those dangerous match winning 100's

K Perrera is Dangerous hack on his day, for sure. Which is once in a blue moon.

Jayasuria was a danger at all times, a player who can take match away easily and get the big scores.

Kusal Perera's maiden T10 half century with an impressive score of 50 not out in just 20 deliveries.

His shots at covers and point always remind me of Sanath Jayasuriya.

Kusal Perera's 102 is the highest individual 102 score in T20s (for Dambulla Sixers), surpassing Mark Chapman's 91

Huge mistake to not include him in the World T20 squad. SL had no batting firepower at all.

With KP, they would've whipped BD and qualified for Super 8's.
