Lahore Biryani and Karachi Biryani are both popular variations of Pakistan's cuisine. Lahore Biryani is often known for its rich and aromatic flavors, featuring a generous use of spices. In contrast, Karachi Biryani is recognized for its slightly tangy taste and the inclusion of additional ingredients like potatoes. Ultimately, the preference between the two depends on individual taste preferences. There is often a lively debate among people in Pakistan about which biryani is the best. In your opinion, which biryani do you prefer, Lahore or Karachi? And, do you enjoy biryani with potatoes and elaichi?

I enjoy blend of both cities biryani, means I like it when there are both aloo and chicken in the biryani, with a mild level of spiciness.

Well bro to be honest. Biryani only brings Karachi in mind. There are multiple shops in barkat market with brand name of "Karachi biryani" so this shows the obsession for Karachi biryani. Anyways Lahore has the best pulao for sure.

Well I was born in Lahore but I have been living in Karachi for the last 37 years. So I know about this dish better than anyone else because i am a very good cook of biryani too :ROFLMAO:

I think Lahoris prefer pulao with less spices which they often call it biryani but if you want to have authentic biryani so u have to go up with spices and trust me those blend of spices and its taste you will only find in Karachi's biryani nowhere else.

Yes, and that's my favorite place in Lahore to have Biryani. "Karachi Biryani" in Barkat market. I have been going to that place for nearly 15 years when they had a really small shop with only two tables in it.

Our Pakistani food is simply out of this world! I have tried both and found them to be very delicious, but Karachi Biryani is always better because of that tangy taste. The only think I never understood was the use of potatoes in them, I mean what are potatoes doing in a biryani?

OYE OYE OYE
I am from Rawalpindi.

DONT YOU DARE SAY LAHORE HAS THE BEST PULAO

My Pindi is the home of SAVOUR Foods. We created the standard for Chicken Pulao. It is what we are known for. Pulao is our one dish that we are good at, and its not Lahores.

You insulted my Pindi by saying Lahore has the best pulao

I have eaten Pakistani biryanis here in Toronto. But, couldn't tell whether it was Lahore biryani or Karachi one.

It was quite rich in flavors/spices. There was no potato. So, I am guessing it was the Lahori one (based on post #1).

Yep Pindians can take great pride in SAVOUR pulao and rightly so but underestimate the great taste of lahori pulao. You need to try the pulao of Yasir Broast, whenever you visit Lahore. There are many other better options too in Lahore.

Lahore is the home of Chicken Karhai and whenever i go to Lahore I always try to have Butt Karhai (the real one).

Jawa also makes good karhai aswell.

Haven't really had rice in Lahore though.

Bro, if you are a fan of Karachi biryani, then you have to be a lover of aloo in biryani.

Savour is expanding its branches, and because of it, I have seen a decline in the quality of their food now. But the taste of Savour Pulao at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium and Blue Area Islamabad just hits differently.

Yes, because Karachiites always prefer aloo in biryani

i think its the product life cycle.

Its taste and quality is same as it was 20 years back, its just that we have had it too much that the products life cycle has been completed and feel it has declined.

Thankfully, they have opened one branch in phase 7.

Haven't tried neither the Lahore or Karachi, so I will stick with my favorite's Hyderabadi/Malabar biriyanis...

I like Hyderabad Biryani from India. Best of all these biryanis

I don’t know who calls palao biryani in Lahore. I have never seen anybody refer to palao as biryani and I am from Lahore. They are two very distinct dishes.

Tehzeeb is originally from Lahore
No man. Tehzeeb opened its first branch in lahore just last week.

It was actually Rahat Bakery than due to some divorce they kept the bakery's location, while the other family got kept the name. The new name was than Tehzeeb.

Rahat lost its quality, while Tehzeeb maitained the quality they had from before.

First ever branch was in Saddar Rawalpindi

they do. Uneducated workers in rawalpindi refer to rice as biryani.

There was a bakery in Lahore Sadar callled Rahat bakery. It was really famous and popular in the 70s, 80s and probably 90s. Then the owner died and the two sons fought over the business. There was an agreement where one son got to keep the name Rahat bakery and the other took his business to Islamabad or Pindi and started afresh and called it Tehzeeb.

I’m not sure if there was a time statute in the agreement around how long Tehzeeb had to stay out of Lahore but Rahat bakery doesn’t exist anymore so they moved back in. They are originally Lahori

sorry bro, either that was some other Rahat or you are mixing Rawalpindi Saddar with Lahore Saddar.

The bakery was known as Rahat in the 90s and it had only one branch in Saddar. They than opened a branch in Islamabad aswell by the same name.

Than, some divorce took place and the name was given to one party and the other party kept the branches. The branches were renamed as Tehzeeb somewhere in 2013-2014.

Rahat Bakery does exist, and its terrible.

Some say Tehzeeb was known as Shimla bakery 60-70 years back.

But it started from Rawalpindi Saddar

@Stewie

infact i think you are right,

Haha, lesson here. Always check. Rahat is originally from Lahore. I used to go there as a kid when they were a tiny shop.

Weird though.

We grew up believing its a bakery of Rawalpindi and did not exist outside of Rawalpindi. We associate it with Pindi alot.

But the quality is top notch and the reason why they exist in market today. In Pindi, alot of businesses tried to copy Rahat/Tehzeeb by bringing in Pizza and Burgers in there branch, but no bakery in Rawalpindi has been able to beat Tehzeeb in quality and hygiene.

Anyways, tumaree Rahat band hogai, hamaree Tehzeeb pindi ke Lahore agay hai :p

That’s ok. It happens. A lot of Islamabad and Pindi is borrowed from Lahore anyway. 😉

Tehzeeb was lucky because they acquired the main branches.

If I were to visit Karachi, which cafe serves the original Karachi Biryani? And in Lahore which restaurant serves original Lahori Biryani?

Potatoes are always good. I like with or without. This question is overblown

Whenever I see someone serve me biryani with potatoes in it, the first thought that comes to mind is 'bro was too cheap to buy enough meat for the biryani'

That isn't the story.

Aloo in Biryani started during Wajid Ali Shah's exile in Kolkata. That's why Kolkata Biryani has aloo in it.

I met a descendant of Wajid Ali Shah's. She know serves a limited number of guests at her home. She told me that during Wajid Ali Shah's exile in Kolkata the Khansamas added Aloo the Biryani as Aloo was a foreign vegetable and considered exotic.

Later after the Nawabs death the Khansamas went on their independent ways. They continued to add Aloo, now a root crop grown in British India because it absorbed the flavours and becomes soft.

Yeah. Need aloo in biryani. Else it will be almost there but not quite.

I think its a very interesting case study.

In my view, Rahat was lucky because they got the brand name and its the brand name that sells.

Yes Tehzeeb had an advantage where by keeping the original branch, people were easily communicated that ok now the original Rahat is Tehzeeb. They didnt had to open new branches and than communicated to the people.

But Rahat having the brand name, all they needed to do was maintain the quality and they failed. They turned into garbage

Aloo in biryani depends if the aloo is cooked or not.
I've tasted almost every Student Biryani in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and the taste is quite ordinary.
bro those are fake.

the original one has opened up in f10, it was makreted by the karachi original fb page

During the candid moment, the Indian World Cup winning captain enthusiastically endorsed Pakistani cuisine, stating, "You should go to Pakistan once for the food. It's amazing."

Probably he was talking about Karachi Biryani 😀

Food lovers savour variety of cuisines as Eat Festival concludes

A vibrant three-day ’Eat Festival’ concluded on the Seaview beach with a significant turnout of citizens on its final day on Sunday. Visitors savoured a variety of delicious food from over 100 stalls, featuring not only traditional dishes but also capturing the essence of Italian, Chinese, Thai, and American cuisines.

The festival catered to all age groups, hosting special activities for children and youth, alongside music concerts featuring renowned Pakistani artists. Beyond Karachi, notable restaurants from Lahore and Islamabad, as well as national and multinational companies, show- cased their offerings in the festival stalls.

Organisers expressed satisfaction with the orderly execution of the three-day event, highlighting its primary goal of providing Karachi’s citizens with an enjoyable opportunity to create lasting memories during winter evenings, complemented by delectable food and breathtaking coastal views. The festival also played a pivotal role in generating employment opportunities for 8,000 individuals, contributing to both recreational and economic activities.

But if you are a seafood lover then I would suggest you to have a have Prawn Biryani.... it's awesome.

I had shrimp biryani before. It was nice.

I eat everything (as long as it is halal). Chicken, beef, lamb, veggies, fish, seafoods etc.

Lahori biryani is more towards the dry state and Karachi biryani is more oily as far as I can tell the difference. I may be wrong in this comparison but I like Karachi one more.

Can anyone here give review on nalli biryani here? heard it's quite famous in Karachi

Lol, Lahori food is phikka, Khi food taste is on another level.

From Lahore but Karachi beats us in food, hands down. Including the briyani.

Aloos just lift the taste of biryani. I have almost quit eating rice so will only stick to biryani once a month.
