Lakshadweep - 96% Muslim - How is this part of India, not Pakistan?

Today I learned that the island territory of India (Lakshadweep) in the Arabian Sea is 96% muslims. How did this not go to Pakistan during partition and what was the reasoning for these islands to go to India? Yet another situation where Pakistan got the short end of the stick during partition?

My question was more during the time of partition. If there was logic to give East Bengal to Pakistan (Bengal with its alien language and being a far away indefensible place), then why not Lakshadweep which has such a big muslim majority. I see the reasoning for this not being a defensible place is valid but I'm also wondering how it was negotiated away from the Pakistani leadership in 1947.

Preaching Islam in Lakshadweep India On his journey his vessel capsized in a storm and he had to continue his journey by drifting on a plank till he reached Amini in AH 41 (663 AD). He started his act of preaching from Amini and was able to convert the Pondambelli family despite the initial linguistic challenges. After facing opposition there he left Amini with some of his new Muslim fellows and moved to Andrott where he got significantly high conversions. He then went to Kavaratti and Agatti, preaching there and then came back to Amini. This time unlike his first arrival in Amini, he was welcomed and via his preaching could successfully influence and convert almost the whole of population to Islam. At last stage of his life, he travelled to Andrott where he lived the rest of his life preaching and teaching. Ubaidullah never went back to his home land of Hijaz and devoted his life for dawah. Sheikh Ubaidullah advanced Islam in Lakshadweep (now in India) Islands by delivering sermons before the islanders.

Mostly Because the Islands were part of Kerala/Madras and they were majority Hindu.. Island as such was not a princely state.

The last of that dynsaty Cheraman Permaul converted to Islam after he was convinced that the dream he had about moon splitting was a sign from Allah to follow Islam. The story says he visits Mecca, meets Prophet and converts. When he comes back, he builds mosques in the Malabar region and the trade with Arabs flourishes. Many Arab Islamic missionaries arrive and when there is patronage from the king, there is no stopping. Most population of Lakshadweep are Muslim migrants from Malabar. Hence they look Malayali and speak Malayalam as language. Its history is similar to Maldives except Maldives was under Srilankan Buddhist kings before converting to Islam.
Prior to arrival of Islam, the Islands were sparsely populated with only merchants from Tamil empires of Pandya and Cholas using it as a base for their trade with middle east and Africa. Prior to 7th century, the Island was Hindu/Buddhist/Jain merchants along with some fishermen communities.

No, it doesn’t. The OP raised a valid historical question about the partition of India under British rule, which, after all, was based on religion.

@hoshiarpurexpress jumped in with Pakistan’s obsession with religion, so I simply pointed out that, actually, it’s India.
