COLOMBO: Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga faced an investigation Thursday after he compared a government minister to a monkey following criticism that the country’s cricketers were too fat.

Sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said he ordered an inquiry after Malinga lambasted him for questioning the endurance of Sri Lankan players following their failure to reach the Champions Trophy semi-finals.

“He is now under investigation for making statements to the media in breach of his contract with Sri Lanka Cricket (board),” Jayasekera told AFP.

“In my criticism of the appalling fitness levels of our players, I did not name Malinga, but he has chosen to put the hat on and attack me publicly.”

Malinga told a television network the minister knew nothing about cricket.

“I don’t care about criticism from those who are simply warming chairs,” he said. “What does a monkey know about a parrot’s nesting hollow? This is like a monkey getting into a parrot’s nest and talking about it.”

Jayasekera said some Sri Lankan players had pot bellies that stopped them moving and that often they could not hold catches.

Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed was twice dropped in his side’s Champions Trophy win over Sri Lanka. Both catches were off the bowling of Malinga, who ended up with just one wicket for 52 runs.

Jayasekera said he ordered a fitness test on the team after their return from England last week and found that most of them carry too much fat.

“The typical body fat amounts for a cricketer should be about 16 percent, but most of our players have over 25 percent,” Jayasekera said.

“I want the results analysed and in future no one will be included in a national squad if they are above 16 percent.”

Malinga, 33, was a surprise choice for the Sri Lanka squad as he has played little international cricket in the previous 18 months because of injury.

Just prior to the Champions Trophy, however, Malinga won the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) title with the Mumbai Indians.

Malinga was the only player excused from Sri Lanka’s high altitude training camp before the Champions Trophy, because of the IPL campaign.

“They improve their fitness level just to bowl four overs at the IPL,” Jayasekera said, referring to Malinga. “These guys are not interested in playing for the country, they play for the IPL because of the money they get.”

Jayasekera said he was also making fitness a key requirement for other sports before an athlete can participate in overseas tournaments.

Malinga has been sporting a belly for almost 3 years now. Looks slow and uninterested when it comes to fielding.

Minister was for sure targeting Malinga. Who else is overweight that also bowls 4 overs in IPL ? Immature comment by the minister. Politicians don't know anything about cricket same goes with "news analysts" every time they criticize I feel like punching them in the face. We all know what happened to our sports minister and olympics.

With Malinga most probably not playing in the next world cup perhaps it's time to retire. No point making daft comments and arguing about something like that.

Don't they have more important things to talk about, I can't imagine a secretary of some important dept here talking about the body fat %age of professional athletes.

Minister is 100 % Correct.

Mathews, Perera & Malinga are all highly unfit and Sarfraz's dropped catches made sure that we win.

He's the sports minister, and Cricket is their most popular sport. Shouldn't be a surprise that he has something to say on the matter

"Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera has delayed approving the 15-man squad for the forthcoming series against Zimbabwe following reports of poor player fitness."

These Sri Lankan Cricketers need to be whipped into getting fit.

Sri Lanka is in a shambles. The Board need to get their act together and some of these players have been getting a free ride.

Why are TTFs like Kapugedara and Tissara Perera still playing ?

Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga will face a disciplinary inquiry from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) over comments made by the pacer about Sri Lanka's Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara.

The board has appointed a three-member panel which includes SLC secretary Mohan de Silva and CEO Ashley de Silva.

After Sri Lanka crashed out from the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, Jayasekara publicly questioned the level of fitness of the players and insisted that the future selection would be based on fitness of players.

Jayasekera further added that the catches which were dropped during the Champions Trophy matches due to poor fitness level.

Malinga, since his return from the Champions Trophy in London, has on two occasions acted in 'contravention of the terms of agreement', which specifically bar him from making any statements to the media without the prior approval of the SLC's Chief Executive Officer.

Malinga publicly criticised the Sports Minister's knowledge of cricket, saying that catches are missed in any game and further added that nobody raised fitness issue when Sri Lanka defeated India by seven wickets during league game on June 8.

He literally had a pot belly at the CT. He deserves to be criticized. That said, the reported suspension of 6-12 months he might be facing is a bit much and could lead to the end of his international career

Lasith Malinga imposed a sentence of a 1 Year suspension, suspended by six months (whereby the punishment would be imposed in the event of a similar infraction within the stipulated 6 month period) and a 50% fine of his next ODI match fee.

Minister is right, Lankan players were unfit. Poor comments from Maligna he has looked unfit for a couple of years.

SL cricket is in absolute shambles. Admin and management are aiming for new lows while a lot of the players have become lazy and complacent. No accountability, direction or consistency whatsoever both on and off the field. Pathetic.

Colombo: Lasith Malinga was suspended for one year after the fast bowler pleaded guilty to a breach of contract by speaking to the media without permission, Sri Lanka's cricket board said in Colombo on Tuesday.

The sanction is suspended for six months.

Malinga will also be fined 50 percent of the match fee from his next one-day international, after a disciplinary inquiry found him guilty of breaching his contract.

Malinga appeared before SLC's special inquiry panel on Tuesday, where he accepted the charges against him and tendered a formal apology.

A specially convened executive committee meeting then imposed a "one-year suspension, suspended by six months (whereby the punishment would be imposed in the event of a similar infraction within the stipulated six month period) and a 50 percent fine of his next ODI match fee," SLC said in a release.

The inquiry was initiated by Malinga's response to sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekara, who had alleged that Sri Lanka's poor fielding standards were due to players' inadequate fitness, in particular their "big bellies".

Malinga, since his return from the Champions Trophy in England, had on two occasions acted in "contravention of the terms of agreement," which specifically bars him from making any statements to the media without the prior approval of the SLC's Chief Executive Officer.

Malinga had publicly ridiculed the minister's knowledge of cricket, saying that catches are missed in any game and implying that he was no more than an armchair critic.

He further added that nobody had raised fitness issues when Sri Lanka defeated India during a league game.

Sri Lankan government warns national players to get fit within 3 months or get axed

The Sri Lankan government on Wednesday warned the national cricket team to get fit in three months or get booted out.
Colombo: The Sri Lankan government on Wednesday warned the national cricket team to get fit in three months or get booted out. The ultimatum came after the squad was found to be unfit for the series against Zimbabwe which starts Friday. “No one has a satisfactory level of fitness, but I have made an exception this time,” sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said. Players are selected by an independent panel for the national team, but the sports minister must give final approval before they can represent the country. Jayasekera said no member of the 13-man squad met required international fitness standards and noted that high levels of injuries were due to poor endurance. Only two players — Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Madushanka – scored high marks in the “yo-yo” endurance test which is mainly running against the clock, a source familiar with the process told AFP. Three other fitness tests were also carried out. Controversial fast bowler Lasith Malinga who weighs 80 kilos (176 pounds) failed one test, the source said, and barely scraped through the rest. He is officially under observation. “Malinga has suffered recurring injuries partly because of the poor fitness,” the source said on condition of anonymity. Lasith Malinga suspended for 6 months

Malinga was slapped with a fine of 50 per cent of his match fee for Friday’s game and given a six-month suspended match-ban for comparing Jayasekera to a “monkey” and saying the minister knew nothing about cricket. The typical body fat amount for a cricketer was 16 percent, but most Sri Lankan players had over 26 percent, Jayasekera said. He has warned any player with a body fat percentage over 16 will not be allowed to represent the country. Sri Lanka Cricket announced Tuesday that Malinga had apologised and also pleaded guilty to violating his contract with the board which precludes players from making public statements.
