The Dutch football association says it has appointed Louis van Gaal as the new national coach to succeed Bert van Marwijk, who quit after the team's terrible performance at the European Championship.

It is the second spell as national coach for Van Gaal, who has had success leading club teams such as Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich but failed to lead the Netherlands to the 2002 World Cup the first time he was in charge of the team.

The Royal Dutch Football Association said on Friday that the 60-year-old Van Gaal has a contract until the 2014 World Cup.

Van Gaal calls the appointment "the challenge I have been waiting for."

"I am pleased the KNVB have approached me," Van Gaal said on http://www.knvb.com. "This is the challenge I have waited for."

Good look to him sorting out all the egos in dutch sqaud as well as getting them to play attractive football again.

Oh mang, Van Gaal's ego vs those of players like Sneijder, Robben etc.

Good these drama queens needed someone like LVG, so who do you think is going to be the first one to look at ...... LOL

Wow. Van Gaal is a complete nutter !

He once shouted to his players 'You don't think I have the balls to drop you ?!'

He then dropped his pants in front of all the players :))) He is also really argumentative with journalists, his press conferences are very fiery.

A very good manager, but an egomaniac.

Things are inevitably going to kick off with him in charge, the guy is crazy

Ah the Pakistan of football, as usual, continuing the mantra of 'never a dull moment' (and with this appointment, that'll defo continue!)

Last time Van gaal was in charge they failed to qualify for the 2002 WC, So he will need to get the best out of a talented sqaud.

His game in charge will be against Belgium

Has he really? I would think he would be a good addition for the 2014 WC. Their defense is horrible and he could make a great defensive midfielder.

The guy is 35, would be 37 by the time the WC arrives, sensible decision really

:))

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahah.....

What?

he wasnt even on the bench on this EURO 2012, hardly played any matches this season for Juve. And yet you mentioned his name.

Louis van Gaal: Former Man Utd manager reveals he has prostate cancer

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he is receiving treatment for prostate cancer.

The Dutchman, currently in charge of the Netherlands national team, made the announcement on Dutch TV programme Humberto on Sunday.

Van Gaal, 70, said he had kept the news from his players during the recent international break.

"I didn't want to tell it to my players because it could have influenced their performances," he added.

Van Gaal is in his third spell as Netherlands head coach, having led them to third place at the 2014 World Cup and now to the 2022 finals in Qatar.

He added: "In each period during my time as manager of the national team I had to leave in the night to go to the hospital without the players finding it out until now. While thinking I was healthy, but.. I am not."

In a two-year spell at Manchester United, Van Gaal led them to FA Cup success in 2016 before he was replaced by Jose Mourinho.

He has also won league titles with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, AZ Alkmaar and Ajax, where he led the Dutch side to Champions League glory in 1995.

That triumph came just a year after Van Gaal's first wife, Fernanda Obbes, died after she was diagnosed with liver and pancreatic cancer.

Speaking in an interview to promote a new film about his life, Van Gaal added: "I've been through a lot with illnesses, including with my own wife. So that's just part of life.

" as a human being have probably become richer because of all those experiences."

Van Gaal is due to be in charge of the Netherlands at the World Cup in Qatar in November, with his side in Group A along with Senegal, Ecuador and the hosts.

Last month he called the decision to hold the tournament in the Gulf country "ridiculous" and said world football governing body Fifa had been solely motivated by "money and commercial interests".

He has been a huge upgrade on Frank de Boer as Dutch manager, and they are one of only around 3-4 teams (along with England, France and Germany) which can win this World Cup.

But if Van Gaal's illness cannot easily be controlled it will be back to Ronald Koeman as manager, with bad results.

You could wish him well perhaps.

Sad news about Mr Van Gaal.

Hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk says he wants to give coach Louis van Gaal "a World Cup to never forget" in Qatar later this year.

The ex-Manchester United boss, 70, told Dutch TV on Sunday he is receiving treatment for prostate cancer.

Van Gaal did not tell his players during the recent international break, but Van Dijk said they are "going to be there for him".

"I was also in shock last night," he said on Monday.

Liverpool centre-back Van Dijk, 30, added: "I messaged him after the interview - it definitely says a lot about him.

"I said to him as well, he's probably not that type of guy that needs a lot of sympathy, that's how he is."

Van Gaal began his third spell as Netherlands coach last August, having previously failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup, before leading them to a third-place finish in 2014.

The Dutch are unbeaten in nine games since the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss returned and they qualified for Qatar 2022 as winners of their group.

Van Dijk said: "I told him as well that we are definitely going to be there for him as a group whenever he needs it - and hopefully we can also make it, for him, a World Cup to never forget."

<b>Ronald Koeman to replace Louis van Gaal as Netherlands boss after World Cup</b>

Ronald Koeman will become the manager of the Netherlands for a second time following the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Koeman, 59, will replace 70-year-old Louis van Gaal, who on Sunday revealed that he is receiving treatment for prostate cancer.

"Proud to share that after the World Cup I will once again fulfil the role of national coach," said Koeman.

"Very much looking forward to this new challenge, on to achieving new successes together."
