Marcus Rashford: on and off the field

What's happened to him?

Looks a shadow of himself. Confidence seems to be low and is struggling.

He is in very poor form, needs to go back to basics. He may still be feeling haunted by the missed penalty for England in the Euros final, and as I have alluded to before he perhaps ended up being focused on his activism first and his football second. (I’m not saying this is right or wrong, but this is my observation.)

That’s like any job though isn’t it do you acknowledge who pays your household bills and go above and beyond every single day? if his club are too unpleased they know what to do.

Today was the Manchester derby, Ronaldo was injured, and local lad Rashford didn’t even make it into the starting lineup. This speaks loudly and clearly as to where his form is(n’t) and where his focus needs to be firmly placed from now on.

BBC Sport understands that England striker Marcus Rashford is unsure of his Old Trafford future.

Rashford still wants to play for United and has another full season left on his contract - plus the option to extend until 2024.

But the 24-year-old, who started yesterday's game on the bench despite the absences of Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani, feels his career has stalled and is concerned his international prospects will be damaged if the situation fails to improve.

Paris St-Germain will also attempt to sign Rashford if 23-year-old France frontman Kylian Mbappe joins Real Madrid. PSG explored the possibility of signing Rashford last summer but United were not prepared to sell. (Mail)

Marcus Rashford: Ralph Rangnick will not 'put any energy' into questions over forward's future

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick will not "put any energy" into questions over Marcus Rashford's future at the club..

Rashford, 24, is considering his future at United after being left on the bench for the 4-1 defeat by Manchester City despite the absences of Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani.

Although his contract expires in June 2023 with the option of another year, Rashford is concerned his international prospects will be damaged by slipping down the pecking order at United.

The England international's future was not mentioned when he spoke to Rangnick earlier this week.

"He didn't say anything to me. He said to me that he's still happy and that he wants to perform on a high level here for the club," said Rangnick. "He didn't mention a thing about not being happy here."

And the German feels spending time thinking about it would be counter-productive.

"It doesn't many sense to put any energy into that," added Rangnick. "I don't think this is an issue and he never said anything about that when we spoke.

"The window is closed right now. Even in case he and his agents or his family think about going to another club, well he can do that but in the summer."

Rangnick feels Rashford needs to follow Jadon Sancho's example and bring his training ground performances to the Premier League.

Rashford has been involved in 14 of the 18 games Rangnick has been in charge for, starting eight.

However, the 24-year-old has not started a Premier League game since the home draw with Southampton on 12 February and has not scored since his late winner against West Ham on 22 January.

"I like Marcus as a player," said Rangnick. "I've had a few in the past at former clubs where they had problems at one stage but it's our job to help him, to get the best Marcus Rashford that he can be."

Manchester United are yet to receive any formal approach from the Ligue 1 champions for Rashford.

PSG unlikely to follow up Rashford interest

Paris Saint-Germain are looking to sign a forward this month but at this stage they are unlikely to follow up their initial interest in Marcus Rashford.

Manchester United are relaxed about the situation because Rashford is committed to the club and he effectively has two years left on his contract - one year plus an option for another year.

Interesting pursuit.

Rashford could be rejuvenated by a move away from United to Paris and it could be a good step for his career.

Plus it’s an opportunity to escape United. Lol

Ronaldo will be jealous. :)

He’s had his difficulties has Marcus Rashford but that was a great goal against Liverpool just now to make it 2-0. Superb run and finish.

Serie A giants Juventus and AC Milan are reportedly battling Arsenal to the signing of Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.

It was claimed earlier in the week how the Gunners were eyeing up a swoop for the 24-year-old in 2023 with the player in the final year of his contract.

Really sharp, industrious, and full of confidence.

Marcus Rashford a 'completely different version' to how he was at Euros, says England boss Gareth Southgate

England boss Gareth Southgate says the World Cup's joint-top scorer Marcus Rashford is a transformed player compared to how he was at the Euros in 2021.

Last summer, Rashford was just a fringe player nursing a shoulder injury as England reached the final of the European Championships, ultimately missing a penalty in the shootout with Italy.

A poor season on the field followed with Manchester United and Rashford dropped out of England contention entirely as a result.

But the 25-year-old has looked rejuvenated under new club coach Erik ten Hag, telling Sky Sports in October he is now in a "better headspace", and forced his way back into Southgate's plans for Qatar.

He marked his first appearance for England since last year's final with a goal from the bench against Iran in the opening group game and his excellent double against Wales took him to the top of the scoring charts at the World Cup and suggests he could be in line for a starting role against Senegal in the last 16 on Sunday.

Asked about Rashford's battle through fitness and form issues, Southgate says he is now working with a player in a very different condition to the one he last had on England duty.

"It's been a challenge for him," Southgate said in his post-match press conference, following England's 3-0 win over Wales. "I went and saw him in the summer, had a long chat with him, and he had some clear ideas he felt he needed to think about and do.

"You can see with his club there has been happiness in his performances this year, and that has shown itself on the training ground with us.

"We have a different version completely to the player we had in the Euros last summer. He's managed to produce those moments tonight, and he could have had a hat-trick really.

"It's great for him, and because it's great for him it's great for us."

The man was on fire yesterday..... Cant remember the last time I saw an English forward look so dominant wearing the three lions!

Rash is a top person. Takes a man to be a multi millionaire yet understand the hunger of society's most vulnerable. He''s having a good world cup as well looking like a serious threat whenever England go forward.

PSG president Al Khelaifi on Rashford: “He’s amazing — to have Rashford for free, every club will be running after him. We’re not hiding it, we have spoken before”, tells Sky.

“Maybe [this] summer? Why not. If he’s free agent, we can talk to him directly but not now”.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he sees similarities between striker Marcus Rashford and France superstar Kylian Mbappe.

Rashford was England's top scorer at the World Cup in a campaign ended by defeat against Mbappe's France.

Ten Hag said: "From the first moment I recognised huge potential.

"When Marcus' positioning is on the back of the defending line, there is almost no better player in the world. There is [only] Mbappe in this moment."

Rashford will now return to Premier League action for United, with the competition resuming on 26 December after breaking for the World Cup.

Rashford struggled last season - failing to make an impact after missing the start of the campaign following shoulder surgery.

He scored just four goals in 25 Premier League appearances - the first time he failed to reach double figures since 2017-18 - and lost his place in the national squad.

But Rashford has repaid the faith shown in him this season by Dutch manager Ten Hag in his first season in charge of United, scoring eight goals in 19 games in all competitions.

With four goals in the league, the 25-year-old has already matched his tally in 2021-22.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has been dropped to the bench for Saturday's Premier League game at Wolves for disciplinary reasons.

Asked about Rashford's absence, manager Erik ten Hag told BT Sport: "Internal disciplinary. No [details]. Our rules."

England international Rashford started United's previous game against Nottingham Forest on 27 December, scoring the opening goal in a 3-0 win.

He was replaced in the starting XI by 18-year-old winger Alejandro Garnacho.

Marcus Rashford has revealed he was left out of Erik ten Hag's Manchester United starting line-up against Wolves after oversleeping and arriving late to a team meeting.

The Dutchman left Rashford on the bench for the trip to Molineux, despite the 25-year-old scoring two goals in two games after returning from the World Cup.

He was introduced as a half-time substitute, however, and went on to score the winning goal, before having a second ruled out for handball after a VAR review.

Speaking to BT Sport after full-time, he said: "I was a little bit late for a meeting - I overslept.

"It's the team rules and it's a mistake that can happen, but I'm disappointed not to play, but I understand the decision and I'm happy that we managed to win the game anyway.

"I think we can draw a line under it and move on.

"I'm in a good place and I'm just pleased with the way that we're progressing. In the past, we could easily have lost that game or drawn it."

Ten Hag was also questioned on the decision to leave Rashford out.

He said: "After the decision, he came in, he was bright, he was lively, he scored a goal - that is the right reaction.

"Of course [that is the end of the matter], but everyone has to match rules and values and, if you react like this, this is the right answer."

One of the players of the season in my opinion.

Has done a complete 180 form wise.

If Marcus Rashford scores for Manchester United this evening against Reading he'll become the first player in the club's history to score in 10 consecutive fixtures at Old Trafford.

Rashford equalled Dennis Viollet's long-standing record of scoring in nine successive home matches when he slid home the winner against Manchester City in the derby.

Viollet, who scored 179 goals in 293 games between 1952 and 1962, set his record in the opening few months of the 1959-60 season.

Teddy Sheringham did score in nine games in a row back in the 2000-01 season, but he missed a home fixture against Leeds United during that run.

Marcus Rashford must guard against 'laziness' to keep up standards, says Erik ten Hag

Marcus Rashford must guard against "laziness" if he is to remain one of Europe's most potent forwards, says Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag.

Rashford, 25, headed in his 21st goal this term in Sunday's 2-0 win at Leeds.

It leaves the England striker one goal short of his best return in a season which came in 2019-20 under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"I don't know when it will stop but if you are satisfied with it, then it will," said Ten Hag.

"And because satisfaction goes to laziness, you have to keep investing every day. When he keeps the investment and keeps the focus in every game and brings the energy and belief in, he will keep scoring.

"He has the skills to score with right, with left and with his head. It's about him getting into position."

England international Rashford now has 114 United career goals to sit 19th on the club's all-time list.

And since the World Cup in particular, he has been in a rich vein of form, scoring 13 goals in 15 games. Rashford has only failed to find the net in three of those matches. Ten of them have ended in victory. Only one - at Arsenal - brought a defeat.

Little wonder Ten Hag said Rashford is "definitely one of them", when asked if the forward is the best in Europe at present.

Rashford endured a disappointing 2021-22 season, when he scored only five times in all competitions and just twice in his last 28 games of an injury-hit campaign.

Even this season, Rashford only scored five in his first 13 appearances before finding the net in successive matches at the end of October.

Ten Hag said he fully believed he could improve Rashford when he took charge at United last May.

"I was convinced from the first moment," said Ten Hag. "I was really excited to work with him. I thought I could get more out of him.

"He has so many skills and such high potential and there can be even more."

Marcus Rashford: Manchester United forward warns of not 'slowing down' as Erik ten Hag prioritises new contract

Manchester United's lethal forward Marcus Rashford has sent an ominous message to the rest of the Premier League by vowing not to "slow down" after continuing his blistering form with two goals in his side's 3-0 win over Leicester City on Super Sunday.

The England forward has scored 17 goals at Old Trafford across all competitions in 2022-23 - the most by a player in a single season for the club since Wayne Rooney in 2011-12 (19).

His second-half strike was his 24th goal of the season in all competitions, his most in a single campaign for United. Sixteen of those 24 goals have come in 17 games since the end of the 2022 World Cup.

On achieving his personal milestone, Rashford told Sky Sports: "It's obviously a nice feeling to be scoring goals and ultimately winning games. I don't think we played that well in the first half but in the second we played a lot better.

"We found Bruno [Fernandes] in pockets, Fred, and they're creating chances for us. We need to look to do that from the beginning but it's also a positive that we're still winning when not at our best.

"There's definitely things to learn and improve on but overall it's a good day."

On his first goal, Rashford admits: "Initially, I was going to pass it as Garna [Alejandro Garnacho] made a good run but the defender was on the inside of him, so I thought shooting across the goal would be the best option.

"There was a bit of relief about the first goal as David [De Gea] made an important save at 0-0. They are important moments. Without having someone like him in the net, we can't go on and win the game."

United have lost just three of their last 22 matches in the Premier League. Furthermore, the Red Devils have won more points than any other side in the English top-flight since the first game of that run (49).

Rashford added: "It's difficult not to keep pushing. We're still early on in the season and we're fighting for a lot of different things.

"We have another big game coming up in midweek where we can hopefully reach the next round of the Europa League and then we have the Carabao Cup final next weekend, which is massive.

"There's always something to push and look forward to. I don't feel like slowing down. I'm always looking to push and improve."

Rashford is on another frequency altogether, levels above others currently. The only other forward I can see who approaches the goal with such scoring confidence is Mbappe.

Marcus Rashford made the most of his time away from the England camp this week by jetting to New York for some richly-deserved downtime, as the Three Lions prepare to take on Italy in their first Euro 2024 qualifier on Thursday night.

The in-form Manchester United forward, who has netted 18 goals in 25 matches across all competitions since the World Cup, pulled out of Gareth Southgate's squad through injury on Monday after picking up a knock during his team's 3-1 win over Fulham in last weekend's FA Cup quarter-final.

Neither United nor the FA confirmed specifics of the injury or the severity of it - but sources insist the problem is genuine and serious enough to prevent his selection.

Rashford took to social media on Thursday to share a picture of him relaxing in New York, sporting sunglasses, a snood and a white bag worth approximately £2,700.

Captioning the photograph 'Downtime', the England international performed the 'Peace' sign as he gestured to fans in his first Instagram post since dropping out of the Three Lions squad.

Forward Marcus Rashford will be out for "a few games" with a muscle injury, Manchester United have said.

The 25-year-old England international left the field holding his groin during the second half of United's win over Everton on Saturday.

United did not give a specific timeline for his return but said he is expected to play again this season.

"I can't give more details of it because we don't know," manager Erik ten Hag said.

"We have to see how it develops, the injury.

"Of course it's a setback and he's disappointed about it, but he's not totally broke because he knows he will return quickly. He's optimistic and he's started straight on his recovery and his rehab so that helps to get back soon."

Rashford has scored 28 times in 47 games this season and has featured in all of United's league games. He has scored 20 goals in 28 matches since returning after the World Cup in December.

Manchester United and England forward Marcus Rashford is "one of the best players" around, says Sevilla boss Jose Luis Mendilibar.

Rashford could return from a groin injury for United's Europa League quarter-final return leg with Sevilla.

The tie is delicately poised at 2-2 after United conceded two late goals in the first leg at Old Trafford.

"We're not going to change our mentality or idea if Rashford plays or not," Mendilibar said.

He added: "Well, Rashford is one of the best players nowadays. We have to think about ourselves, respecting the opposite team but we don't have to think about particular players.

"If Rashford plays, it's because he's ready. If he's not, another top player will play there."

Marcus Rashford contract: Erik ten Hag is confident Manchester United striker will sign new deal

Erik ten Hag believes Marcus Rashford and Manchester United "will find each other" in the striker's ongoing contract discussions.

Rashford has scored 29 goals in all competitions for his boyhood club this season, his best in a United shirt.

Speaking before the visit to Bournemouth on Saturday, Ten Hag was asked for an update on the negotiations regarding the England international's future.

"I know [it is taking time]," he said.

"But I don't talk about the process. This is not important at the moment for me or Rashy.

"For him, it is to get more goals this season and he is playing a wonderful season and the team is playing a wonderful season.

"We have to get into the Champions League and focus on that. Marcus wants to stay and we want him to stay, so I think we will find each other."

Ten Hag also said Rashford, 25, is a doubt for Saturday's match against the Cherries due to illness, despite him returning to training earlier this week after an injury which saw him miss the home win over Wolves.

Fourth-placed United are a point ahead of Liverpool with a game in hand in the race for Champions League qualification, and two wins from their remaining three games would guarantee the Red Devils a place in the top four

"I think we have to keep doing what we have all season," Ten Hag said.

"Improve every day and improve every game and not look too far ahead.

"Focusing on the next game is the most important."

Manchester United 's Marcus Rashford says he is "100% committed" to England after he faced criticism for a trip to New York following his withdrawal from international duty in March.

The forward, 25, missed Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine with an injury.

At the time, England manager Gareth Southgate defended the forward's decision to go to the United States.

"I need time to switch off and recover," Rashford said.

"I took a short trip, four days, then went back to do rehab and just try and get ready as soon as possible.

"With injuries, you can't predict when they're going to happen. Occasionally you do get impact injuries. I know that I'm committed to it [England] 100%.

"People are going to say what they're going to say. It doesn't really bother me."

Rashford is now preparing for England's next two Euro 2024 qualifiers, against Malta in Valletta on Friday and North Macedonia at Old Trafford the following Monday.

The striker scored 30 goals across all competitions for United during the season just completed.

His last game of the campaign was in the FA Cup final on 3 June, when United lost 2-1 to a Manchester City side who went on to complete the Treble.

"It's not nice but at the same time it's football," added Rashford, whose United side finished third and won the EFL Cup last season.

"The best team that is consistently playing the best football is going to win the most trophies. They managed to win three this year - well done to them.

"We just move on. It's up to them to keep it up and up to the rest of us to catch up."

City's Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Kalvin Phillips, John Stones and Kyle Walker joined up with the England squad on Tuesday.

Asked what he will say to the City contingent at the England camp, Rashford replied: "Just congratulations, it's football. The most consistent teams are going to win trophies. It's nothing new. Look at Barcelona and Madrid, they're always going to win trophies."

He added that England players winning trophies was "a massive positive" and would only help the team "get over the line in a major tournament".

England's match in Malta on Friday extends a season that began for Rashford on 7 August, more than 10 months ago.

The forward, who played 56 times for his club in a season which also included a World Cup in November and December, described the current calendar as "mad".

"The players are going to push ourselves to the absolute limits," he said.

"We need to be given more time to recover between certain games and at different stages of the season.

"That's my opinion but I don't think it's down to the players. We shouldn't have to put ourselves in a position to speak out about something that we're not in control of or we're not going to make the final decision on."

Manchester United and England striker Marcus Rashford escaped unhurt after being involved in a car crash on Saturday night.

The incident happened when Rashford had left United's Carrington training ground in his white Rolls Royce.

Erik ten Hag's squad had returned on the team coach from Burnley following their 1-0 win before leaving the training base in their personal cars.

Pictures emerged online showing the aftermath of the incident.

Rashford played the full 90 minutes of United's win at Turf Moor - the club's first win in four matches.

Marcus Rashford: Man Utd forward wants 'malicious rumours' about future to stop

Marcus Rashford has called for gossip about his future at Manchester United to stop after he missed Saturday's win at Fulham through injury.

Rashford was criticised by boss Erik ten Hag after he went out to celebrate his birthday hours after the 3-0 loss against Manchester City just over a week ago.

But Ten Hag confirmed the striker's absence on Saturday was due to injury.

"Please STOP spreading malicious rumours," Rashford said.

The 26-year-old posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, in response to The United Stand account, a Manchester United fan channel.

The United Stand teased their latest podcast by asking: "Rashford's future in doubt? WE'RE LIVE!"

The England forward did feature from the bench in the 3-0 Carabao Cup loss against Newcastle three days after the encounter with City.

Rashford was Manchester United's leading scorer last season with 30 goals across all competitions but has struggled to match those figures this campaign - registering just once.

United have lost five of their 11 Premier League fixtures this campaign but Saturday's last-gasp victory over Fulham saw them bounce back from successive defeats in the league and Carabao Cup.

Marcus Rashford’s brother Dane Rashford faces US assault charge

The brother and agent of Manchester United star Marcus Rashford is to appear at a US court after being arrested over an alleged assault.

A police report said Dane Rashford, 31, had been travelling in the back of an Uber with a woman after visiting a Miami nightclub on 20 October.

It noted the victim claimed she was punched twice in the face.

The case is listed for a hearing on 27 November.

In the police report, seen by the BBC, an officer describes making contact with the victim in the early hours of the morning after being called to a 4-star hotel on Miami Beach.

The report set out details of the allegations and describes Dane Rashford as being "irate" and kicking a closest door "causing visible damage".

Officers took statements from the victim, Mr Rashford and his sister, Chantelle Maynard, before taking Mr Rashford, of Wilmslow, to custody and later charging him with battery.

Miami Beach fire and rescue was also called to the hotel to treat the victim's injuries, the police report said.

Daysi Vega-Mendez, assistant state prosecutor for Miami Dade County told the Telegraph: "The case is still active, at the moment I haven't been able to get hold of the victim.

"At the moment, the case is still active and listed for an arraignment hearing on 27 November."

Marcus Rashford: Erik ten Hag says he is not happy with Man Utd forward's form but says he will find goals soon

Erik ten Hag says both he and Marcus Rashford are not happy with the Manchester United forward's form this season - but the United boss is confident that his striker will return to scoring goals soon.

Rashford, who scored 30 goals in all competitions last season - has scored just once since the start of the season, with United enduring their worst start to a campaign since 1974, after nine defeats in the opening 17 games.

Going into Saturday's home match against Luton, Rashford has the worst negative Expected Goals (xG) differential out of any Premier League player this season - demonstrating the 26-year-old's wastefulness in front of goal.

The England international was also sent off in the first half of Wednesday's 4-3 Champions League defeat to FC Copenhagen.

"I think he's not happy, we are not happy. We have expectations, he has high expectations of himself," Ten Hag said about Rashford's start to this season.

"At this moment, he is not in his best form. But I know he will be back. I know when the team is playing better, he will play better, he will score goals. I am confident of that.

"This season he will improve and score goals, he's totally in the team and aware on everything. He will be back on track.

"That can happen very quickly. Sometimes you need only one game, I'm sure he will get there."

Rashford has two goals in all competitions this season

Erik ten Hag is willing to give his Manchester United players a ‘kick in the a**’ to get the best out of them ahead of facing rivals Liverpool. Back-to-back defeats to Bournemouth and Bayern Munich has increased the pressure on Ten Hag and the players to turn things around.

The form of too many high performers has dropped off, with forward Marcus Rashford a prime example having scored 30 club goals last term and just two this season.

Asked what kind of approach he believes would get the best out of the forward, Ten Hag underlined the need to choose the right method for the right player.

"And then I think that makes a difference in the management, so when are you taking which approach? The kick in the a*** or arm around the shoulder?"

United were thrashed 7-0 at Anfield in March and have to go back there on Sunday, but Ten Hag has faith in his team.

"I always have (belief)," Ten Hag said. "When I go to any game, I have the strong belief I am going to win. I will prepare the team in that way - that we are going to win.

Pushed on what he has seen in particular ahead of Liverpool, he said: "I see the quality on the pitch, on the training pitch.

"But the only moment you have to prove it is in the games, isn't it?

United boss Erik ten Hag poured cold water on a move away from the club.

The Dutchman outlined his intention to keep Rashford at Old Trafford in the long term during his press conference ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final clash with Liverpool.

"We didn't re-sign him last season for four years [new contract] with the intention to sell him. No," said Ten Hag.

Marcus Rashford: Man Utd striker has 'big motivation' says Erik ten Hag

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has defended Marcus Rashford, saying the striker is highly motivated to help the club during the season run-in.

Rashford, 26, was left out of the starting line-up for Thursday's 4-3 Premier League defeat at Chelsea.

United led 3-2 before conceding two late stoppage-time goals.

Rashford came on just before United took the lead, but a perceived lack of pressing was highlighted on social media in the wake of the defeat.

It came just hours after Rashford's step-brother and agent Dwaine Maynard responded to former United skippers Gary Neville and Roy Keane over comments made about the England forward on the 'Stick to Football' Podcast.

Neville said Rashford, who has scored eight goals in 37 games this season, "wasn't right", whilst Keane suggested he needed a kick up the backside.

It feeds into a narrative the Rashford camp feels has led to the player being singled out for criticism with little protection from the negativity.

Maynard said in a social media post that if the pair had "genuine concerns" they should "pick up the phone".

Ten Hag has not offered any fitness reasons for Rashford's form compared to last season, when he scored 30 times, and says he is a player who can "change the momentum".

Rashford has faced questions about his work-rate on the pitch and criticism about his off-field conduct this season, and in February he said people questioning his commitment to the club need to show "more humanity".

The Stamford Bridge defeat leaves United sixth, 11 points behind Aston Villa in fourth.

They still have a chance of European qualification and have reached the FA Cup semi-finals.

With the European Championship to come in the summer, Ten Hag feels England international Rashford has plenty of reasons to want to impress.

"Lately his form is progressing," the Dutchman said, ahead of United welcoming Liverpool on Sunday (15:30 BST). "I think he has a big motivation because he wants to be successful with us.

"He wants to score goals but he wants to win trophies and we still have a chance in the FA Cup. He wants to fight for a Champions League spot and the Euros are coming so I will say his motivation should be high.

"He can change the momentum. Before [the 30 March game at] Brentford he scored three goals in three games."

Rashford on way back after taking control - Ten Hag

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is returning to his best form after taking control of his career, manager Erik ten Hag says.

After hitting a personal best 30 goals in his first season under Ten Hag, Rashford's form collapsed last term.

The 26-year-old scored just eight times and lost his place in Gareth Southgate's European Championship squad.

In addition, Rashford was dropped for the FA Cup fourth-round tie at Newport in January as a disciplinary measure after going out without permission on a trip to Belfast.

"I think he is on the way back," said Ten Hag.

"He always knew, and every player knows, when your lifestyle is not right, you can't perform. You don't get the right levels when you don't have a good and disciplined life away from [United's training ground] Carrington."

Rashford scored twice in the midweek EFL Cup hammering of Barnsley to take his seasonal tally to three. It was the end of December before he reached the same mark last season.

The return of legendary former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who became part of Ten Hag’s coaching team this summer, has helped. But Ten Hag feels Rashford is responsible for his own performance and putting himself in the right condition to play.

"In this club, you definitely need some resilience," he said.

"No football career is only up. You always go down. You have to deal with it. He took control of it and I think he is on the way back.

"Probably he needed some help but at the end of the day, he has to do it by himself.

"He has to set his life right, his training attitude right, his match attitude right. When he sets his professionalism he will perform because he is a class player."

England's new interim manager Lee Carsley left Rashford out of his squad for the recent Nations League victories over the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

However, there are more rounds of fixtures in October and November and Ten Hag feels Rashford, who has 60 full caps, will not be on the outside of the international scene for long.

"It is not up to me but I think he will always be an option for every manager."

Rashford returns as Tuchel names first England squad

Aston Villa forward Marcus Rashford has been named in Thomas Tuchel's first squad as England manager.

Rashford last played for England in a friendly against Brazil in March 2024 but has impressed since joining Villa on loan from Manchester United in January.

Newcastle defender Dan Burn and Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly are in line for debuts after receiving their first call up.

England start their qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup with a double-header at Wembley against Albania and Latvia on Friday, 21 and Monday, 24 March respectively (both 19:45 GMT kick-offs).

Rashford is yet to score at Villa but has chipped in with four assists as he seeks to get his career back on track.

The 27-year-old has won 60 caps for England, scoring eight goals, but fell out of favour with then manager Gareth Southgate following a drop-off in form at Manchester United.

He was omitted from the Euro 2024 squad, where England were beaten in the final by Spain, while he also missed out on the 2024-25 Nations League campaign.

In 2020, Tuchel, who was in charge of Paris St-Germain, called Rashford a "big threat" and joked he was a "bit annoying" before a match against Manchester United in the Champions League.

Burn has not featured for England at any level but has been a regular and consistent performer for Newcastle.

The 32-year-old offers versatility given he can play in the centre of defence or at left-back.

Lewis-Skelly, 18, only made his senior competitive debut for Arsenal in September but has emerged as a significant player the Gunners.

He has primarily been deployed at left-back but can also operate in midfield and has made 25 appearances this season.

Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford and Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah are also hoping to win their first caps for the senior side.

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke returned from two months out injured on Sunday, playing the full game in a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, and has been included ahead of Aston Villa frontman Ollie Watkins.

As well as looking to youth, Tuchel has also recalled a senior figure with Ajax midfielder Jordan Henderson in the 26-man squad.

Henderson, 34, made his senior debut for the national side under the last non-English manager - Fabio Capello - in 2010 and last featured against Malta in November 2023.

Rashford ready to wait on Man Utd future

Marcus Rashford feels it is unlikely he will play for Manchester United again under Ruben Amorim, but will not be rushed into making a decision about his future.

Rashford scored his fourth goal since joining Aston Villa on loan in February during their 2-1 loss at Manchester City on Tuesday.

The striker's loan deal at Villa Park expires at the end of the season.

But while his United contract is due to run until 2028, and it is not completely out of the question Rashford might return, sources close to the player do not see an obvious way back into the Old Trafford fold.

Rashford was exiled by Amorim from the first team in December, then, aside from the home defeat at Newcastle on 30 December when he was an unused substitute, did not pick him in his matchday squad again.

In the wake of the Villa move, Amorim said: "I couldn't get Marcus to see the way you're supposed to play football and to train the way I see it."

It means United will have to decide whether to sell the 27-year-old or let him move away from the club on another loan deal this summer.

As United - and Amorim - are trying to juggle their finances in order to reshape a squad so it fits with the former Sporting boss' preferred style of play, having clarity over one of their most highly paid players would be beneficial.

However, that is unlikely.

Rashford has ruled out the possibility of moving to London, and ideally would join a club that has qualified for the Champions League.

Sources close to the player are adamant Rashford is yet to have talks about his future and is not planning to do so until the middle of June.

However, it is understood he has no interest in being part of a swap deal - after recent speculation around United's interest in Crystal Palace forward Eberechi Eze.

Rashford is a more attractive proposition for potential suitors than he was when he joined Villa on 2 February.

While four goals in 17 games could not be regarded as prolific, his overall contribution - including six assists - to the Villa cause has been significant.

It earned Rashford a recall to the England fold and has kept fellow international Ollie Watkins frustrated on the Villa substitutes bench.

Saturday's FA Cup semi-final meeting with Crystal Palace and a continuing battle for a Champions League place, after his excellent performance against Paris St-Germain last week, is a far more positive position than United's ongoing struggles.

As one of United's highest earners, the number of clubs who could meet Rashford's salary is not extensive.

However, United did fund part of his wages to push the Villa move through and the feeling around the Rashford camp is there is likely to be significant interest in him in the summer, which is when he wants to assess his options.

Villa boss Unai Emery has been cautious about discussing Rashford's future at the club.

"I am so happy with him," said Emery after Villa's defeat by City. "He is performing very well. His adaptation has been quick and his commitment to the process is really important for us and for him.

"He needs to keep going and on Saturday, hopefully he can help again."
