Anyone seen it. Aziz Ansari, also of Parks and recs. Basically a fantasy of what he'd hope for in real life ... Lucky with girls etc.

Getting good rep because apparently it portrays a 'liberal Muslim'; Ansari is an atheist and is a womanising, pork eating drinker in the show but is a Muslim by birth ... named Dev.

Didn't like it at all. Not funny just like aziz ansari himself
Wasn't a comedy tbf, more a comedy-drama with his goofy side being central. I actually watched it, wasn't bad and has very high ratings. Like I said, a fantasy more than anything.

It's an excellent show. Very well written. It's easy to relate to for a lot of people of South Asian descent in the West because it stays away from ridiculous stereotypes (often funny but not ones that people like me can relate to). Obviously if you grew up a practicing Muslim, you might not enjoy it as much but for others who've had to balance pleasing their parents and trying to live life on their own terms there's a lot of common elements.

Also might be easier to relate to for someone who is similar in age to Ansari than someone born in 1998 for obvious reasons.

I think the pork eating and alcohol is symbolism for various cultural/religious restrictions placed on South Asian children who are caught between meeting their parents expectations and doing things they want to do.

Also, it's interesting that Ansari being an atheist rubs people the wrong way so they take personal digs at him. Yea he might have cast better looking women than the ones he usually interacts with but that is a common theme in any film industry. And they aren't exceptionally good looking either, just above average.

One thing that shouldn't have been overlooked is naming a Muslim character Dev. Such a minor thing.

IMDb is usually spot on when it comes to tv shows and this is an 8.2 which is quite low for a show

The early 2000 was a good time to see some interesting stuff coming out of Indian immigrants, hardly able to relate to second generation of them though.

Even TV movies like flavors and American Desi felt funny and relate able compared to these new shows/movies but if the second generation likes them ,then good for them.

I quite enjoyed the first season. How is this one?

Tbh I enjoyed it. Well written and new story lines. Way better than cheap laughs shows like big bang. He explores new topics and you actually have a takewaway or 2 at the end of episodes in season 1 atleast.

in season 1 there wasnt any mention or indication that he is Muslim so id assumed he is hindu descent going by his name.

i guess with the prevailing situation its a good topic to explore

def planning to binge watch ssn 2 this weekend

Im 5 episodes in, and enjoying it - although I didn't think the religion epiosde hit the same mark that the parents one did in Season 1.

Liked the first season, and agree with some others here. Its not your general feel-good comedy, that has cheap laughs which you can watch in the background. Its got a bit more thought than that.

Think the muslim part is an afterthought added into Season 2. If they envisaged it at the outset, they would not really have called the character Dev Shah with a Dad named Ramesh.

The first season was brilliant especially the episodes with the parents and the Indians in TV one. Not enjoying the second season as much as I think the comedy is lacking this season but it's still good.

Exactly. I pointed that out to my friends as well. There was a clear insinuation that the characters were Hindu presumably because the Indian American demographic is larger and they wanted to target them. It irked me because in real Aziz is from a Muslim family. They realised they wanted to do the pork episode this season and changed their track. It is a bit ridiculous - they should have kept it authentic from the onset.

Popular shows like Big Bang shouldn't be compared to offbeat critically-acclaimed shows such as Master of None and Silicon Valley even if they are of the same genre.

Big Bang is proper garbage now anyway. It caters to simpletons. It was a good show when it first started but quickly deteriorated into being unfunny and having lazy writing going for cheap laughs, just like most sitcoms. It's still going on simply because it's making everyone involved in the production of the show a lot of money. It should have ended a few seasons ago.

There are other discrepancies. In real life, Aziz Ansari is of a Tamil Muslim upbringing.

In the show, again he is called Dev Shah - not a typical Tamil name, but yet mentions he is of a Tamil Indian background.

Forward to the religion episode, his parents start saying beta - which, as far as I know, is not a tamil word.

I guess their main demographic is not even going to notice these errors, so who cares. Just like Kumail Nanjiani's character Dinesh Chugtai in Silicon Valley. Non-muslim first name, but Mughal surname. No one, apart from Indians and Pakistanis noticed. Tbf though, I seem to recall they referenced this in one of the episodes, almost as an inside joke.

Indian demographic doesn't mean only Hindu ,there are Indian Muslims as well and his actual parents did once belong to Tamil Nadu ,in India.

Wow so many things wrong with the show, guess it's genuinely made for White audience but this even makes Bollywood stereotypes look better.

Shah's are mostly from Gujarat and beta is never used here ,it's kanna at best.

I watched a show on Netflix last year and at the time I had no idea he was Muslim/atheist/whatever. I didn't like the show because he came across as smarmy and greasy. That would have been ok but he wasn't that funny either.

To be fair, the show does not centre on the character's religion or ethnicity. The religion part came into it for one specific episode. The fact that he is Tamil came up once in a minor point about the languages he speaks.

I can get over those discrepancies as 'small' errors. They make no real impact in the larger scheme of the show.

Aziz ansar is trash . No delivery at all . Doesnt know how to tell a joke , just raises his voice. I like mindy from the mindy project better.
