Mastercard acquires title sponsorship rights for all BCCI international and domestic home matches

Mastercard today announced its collaboration with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to broaden its strategic outreach to Indian audiences. During this association, Mastercard will be the title sponsor for all international matches (both women and men) held on home ground, domestic cricket matches like Irani Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Ranji Trophy organized by the BCCI as also all junior cricket (Under 19 and Under 23) matches held in India.

This sponsorship and the activations around it are aimed at enhancing Mastercard’s connect with cricket lovers across the country and beyond. For a brand that is highly invested in sponsorships worldwide with marquee properties like the UEFA Champions league, the Grammys, the Cannes Film Festival and the Australian and French Open tennis tournaments, Mastercard’s tie up with the BCCI further enhances its prestigious portfolio of partnerships.

Mr. Sourav Ganguly, President, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said “The BCCI welcomes Mastercard as the Title Sponsor for home cricket matches for the 2022-23 season. Along with the international home series, the BCCI’s domestic tournaments are crucial as they are a stepping stone towards making India a strong international side. The BCCI truly values Mastercard’s support in building Indian cricket. This sport is more than a passion point, it’s a way of life and we look forward to some innovative experiences for the fans via this partnership and delivering value to Mastercard through this collaboration.”

Mr. Jay Shah, Honorary Secretary, BCCI said: “The BCCI is pleased to associate with a global marquee brand - Mastercard. We are in for an exciting period in Indian Cricket as we have Australia and South Africa coming over for white-ball series before the T20 World Cup and Sri Lanka, New Zealand and the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy early next year while domestic cricket has a packed calendar with the return of the Duleep Trophy and a full-fledged Ranji Trophy season. The 2022-23 season will witness a lot of action across age groups and I am confident that this will be an enriching partnership.”

Mr. Raja Rajamannar, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Mastercard said, “Cricket is a perfect amalgamation of sports and entertainment with immense potential to deliver priceless moments. Our globally recognized “Priceless” platform offers us the unique opportunity to delight our cardholders, customers and partners worldwide. Cricket enjoys unparalleled popularity not just in India where it is a singular unifying force for the nation, but also in several countries around the world. It is therefore particularly relevant and opportune for us to have acquired the title sponsor rights for all home international and domestic cricket matches organized by the BCCI.”

MS Dhoni, India’s legendary cricketer who has been Mastercard’s ambassador for over four years added, “Cricket has been my life and given me everything I have. I am thrilled that Mastercard is sponsoring all the home cricket matches of the BCCI, and especially the domestic, junior and women’s cricket. The Ranji and junior players of today will play for the country tomorrow and continue to embody the pride of 1.3 billion Indians.”

Mastercard endeavours to enhance its strong international base of sponsorship assets across passion points with uniquely Indian ones. Mastercard has worked to amplify this passion area with the signing on of MS Dhoni, the former Indian cricket captain, as its brand ambassador over four years ago. The synergies envisaged between Mastercard and Indian Cricket will be mutually beneficial for the sport, its fans and for the brand during this tenure.

There are levels to this. We have a long way to go

Success breeds success - winning big series or an ICC trophy will help also for Pakistan.

But I feel, regardless of what India wins, it's the sheer size of the market that will make big sponsors come to the BCCI

And the PCB still struggles to find sponsors for its domestic cricket and its regional side.

According to sports reporters, the reason why a sponsor pulled out is because the PCB doesn't telecast every domestic game live on TV which makes it difficult for commercial businesses to sponsor domestic cricket.

There is something wrong with these Sponsoring deals with BCCI and many of the Sponsors are leaving from their contracts mid-way.
May be these deals are over-valued and Sponsors are realising they are shelling out more than they should and are leaving it mid way, or there may be other reasons.

Readout this article and see how many sponsors have left their contracts midway recently.

There was a pause on Mastercard for issuing new cards/users in India and this was recently removed. May be thought, this is a great opportunity to get deal and get in more users, when it was in News that PayTm may left the deal.

Mastercard is not free of faults. A lot of people are complaining about Mastercard’s service in recent times.

It is a big company but I wouldn't be comfortable with a sponsor who's prime business is dealing in sood. So in this instance, I think its a good thing for the banks discouraging use of credit cards.

More money to the already mega rich BCCI.

One thing BCCI deserves credit for is their priority in investing in domestic cricket.

Paytm- getting killed due to competition and Chinese investors
Vivo- Chinese restriction
Unacademy- The realizations that online education is not even close and hence losses after Post covid opening.

So no it’s not what you think if the deal was lucrative, Cricket is lucrative but only business that have a product that sells in India can afford to keep sponsoring.

Mastercard will not even come close to adoption in India, Credit is not a thing in India, its UPI based payments.

Rupay is next.because of Government’s push.

Lol and no bank discourages sood, if that happens our economy will collapse.

National bank does charge interest on its loans

On topic please.

And yet,

Spends have topped Rs 1 trillion level for five consecutive months now. Credit card spends touched an all-time high of Rs 1.16 trillion in July, registering a growth of 6.5 per cent on a month-on-month basis and 54 per cent year-on-year, latest data put out by the Reserve Bank of India revealed.

Thanks, picking up but still extremely low in terms of payment.
My guess is this growth bas been noticed by them.

Yes, I'm not an economist but I know how economies work in general and as above please stay on topic.

I'm only quoting what you said: "Meanwhile in pakistan, our national bank is discouraging people from usging mastercard and visa..."

Trlling me stay on topic while you go off..

Pakistans national bank is not discouragin as not from sood, but they want to promote chinese base union pay and pakistan based paypak which is also sood, but they are terrible services.

Union pay and paypak have break down in connection everyweek halting transactions in the whole country.

Our govt is trying to appease to china by taking on their crappy system

Trlling me stay on topic while you go off..

That was the mods and I agreed, the angle and in-depth analysis on these topics is best discussed in the TPF.

That's true. May be because a big percentage of Indians (even educated ones) still view credit cards with a bit of suspicion and are not fully aware of credit as a concept and that too for shopping, as alien it may sound in the year 2022!

Plus, quite a few banks do charge annual fee and a whopping 36% as interest per annum if someone doesn't pay his credit card dues in stipulated time.

Two of Indian cricket team's main sponsors, edtech major Byju's and MPL sports, want to exit from their sponsorship agreements with the BCCI. In June, Byju's had extended its jersey sponsorship agreement with the Board until November 2023 for an estimated USD 35 million. Byju's now wants to terminate its agreement with the BCCI which has asked the company to continue at least until March 2023.

"BCCI received an email from Byju's on 4.11.2022 requesting terminating the association post the recently concluded T20 World Cup. As per our discussions with Byju's, we have asked them to continue the current arrangement and continue the partnership at least until 31.3.2023," read a BCCI note on the matter.

The matter was discussed at the BCCI Apex Council meeting on Wednesday. The brand had replaced Oppo back in 2019. Byju's was also one of the sponsors of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The edtech company had recently announced plans to lay off not more than five per cent of its total strength of 50000.

MPL wants to assign kit and merchandise rights to KKCL

Team kit and merchandise sponsor had conveyed the BCCI for the complete assignment of its rights to Kewal Kiran Clothing Limit (KKCL). The existing contract is valid until December 31, 2023. MPL had replaced Nike back in November 2020.

"BCCI received an email communication from MPL sports on 2.12.2022 seeking a complete assignment (team + merchandising) at full value to Kewal Kiran Clothing Limited, a fashion wear brand, for the period from 1.12.2023 to 31.12.2023.

"With the upcoming back to back home series and the women's away calendar, it was suggested that the current arrangement should not be hampered as it involves performance gear for the national teams.

"We have asked MPL sports to continue the association at least until 31.3.2023 or look for a partial assignment that would involve only the right chest logo but not the kit manufacturing agreement," the note read.

Earlier this year, Paytm had transferred its title sponsorship rights for Indian cricket's home season to Mastercard.

Central contracts to be decided after formation of selection panel

The Apex Council was expected to decide on the players' central contracts but it would only be done after the formation of the new selection committee. The BCCI had sacked the Chetan Sharma-led panel after the T20 World Cup in Australia

While Shah did not reveal any further details, it was earlier learnt that Adidas will replace Killer on a five-year deal. “The fine print of the contract is being worked out. But the valuation is set to go up,” a BCCI official said.

Killer, a lesser-known apparel brand, took over the kit sponsorship from MPL that wanted to end its contract that was to run till 2023 end. MPL was paying the Indian board ?65 lakh per match and ?9 crore as royalty for a three-year deal. Primarily jeans-makers, Killer’s deal with BCCI is for five months, which market experts call a win-win situation for the brand.

“Imagine, they get to leverage from Virat Kohli, who is a Puma athlete, and Rohit Sharma, an Adidas athlete, with this association,” a leading industry executive said. “No wonder, Killer are happy to stretch their deal through April-May, which are basically IPL months, where the Indian team will not even be on the park.”
