The mayor of the City of Port Arthur, Texas, Deloris “Bobbie” Prince, has declared February 5, 2014 “Shahid Khan Afridi Day”.
Anjum Tahirkheli, chair to the Afridi Foundation, tweeted that Shahid Afridi was also honoured by being given the keys to the City of Port Arthur, Texas.

Afridi is currently in the US on the Islamic Circle of North America’s (ICNA) invitation. He will be visiting New York, New Jersey and Florida on February 7, 8 and 9, he said in an ICNA video.
The ICNA has also organised a cricket camp in New Jersey.
However, before hitting New York, Afridi visited Louisiana and Texas, where he is also fundraising for his Shahid Afridi Foundation.

no wonder why cricket could never become a popular sport all around the world, because below par players are given honor which they dont deserve

Does not make any sense at all. In fact something like this will help increase the popularity of cricket. I bet a lot of people in that town do not know who Shahid Afridi is and what the sport cricket is all about, until this day.

LOL

No one pays to watch Misbah tuk tuk!!

We want to see ENTERTAINMENT and this guy is pure entertainment, whether you like it or not.

I saw a photo before and it was about this but I thought it must have been fake. Anyways its true. Big deal though regardless, of having a day being named after you. Guy must be happy.

I'd rather watch Misbah score a difficult 100 in a Test match than watch Afridi slog a lucky 40 off 20 balls.

Its a proud thing for all Pakistani that in America a whole day is named on a Pakistani players :/ instead of whinning and crying of each and everything we should cheer for it :)

I think Pakistan should celebrate a day for Afridi as well.

Port Arthur is very close to the metro city of Houston where there's an immense crowd of Pakistanis living. I didn't hear about him here in Houston.

To be honest this is something similar to Ishant Sharma getting a day named after him. Promotes cricket? Yeah. But... you know what I mean.

A more appropriate day would've been 1st of April :afridi

wonder why this particular city decide to do that. how many in that city really know anything about cricket (leave afridi aside).
anyway nice to know that pakistan's name come in news for something normal and fun.

Afridi and his foundation/followers approached the city.

The city and mayor doesn't even know him probably, as the document states "according to his website...."

this should be signified with everybody resigning from theIr jobs and coming back next day :p

You want to bore new fans with some delightful tuk tuk?

Americans want a game that is going to finish rapidly and see huge hits, going out of the ground or else, they'll stick with baseball, which is faster and more entertaining (to them anyway).

Do you know why cricket isn't catching on? Because people think it's boring and I've heard people say it many times but players like Afridi will put bum on seats and help expand the game by bringing in new fans.

Dude, why are you bringing off-topic lame words into this discussion? Go watch some IPL or Big Bash League if you're that much into T20s.

If you're hinting towards a specific player (which is obvious from your hate-mongering words), then that gem of a cricketer is one of the most versatile players of cricket. A beast in T20s, ODIs, tests - changes gears and goes on top according to each format. But don't bring that most respectable player of this modern era into this thread. Keep the hate inside.

Let the professional cricket flourish. Too much mediocrity has infested ODIs and Tests.

No one should deny that that's true. T20 cricket and people like Afridi and Miller is a wonderful answer to baseball.

No one should deny that entertainment doesn't have to be so mindless either, though. :p Even if the Americans can't comprehend that.

While we are at it, why not make it a public Holiday for the entire U.S. on Feb 5th?

He is coming to a indoor cricket facility near where I live in NJ on saturday .. I might go to meet him

I'm not hinting particularly at Misbah!!

I'm hinting at people like him, Cook, Trott and co.

Misbah has done a wonderful job but the discussion was regarding, "Will Afridi bring more new fans to the game, compared with Misbah and co.?".

Basically, he wants new fans to see someone like Trott batting because he is a proper batsman but do new fans want to see that?

The town is close to Houston where a large community of Pakistani's reside. Still, it's a predominantly black town with a population of less than 60,000 so its weird that they would name a day, which has no historical significance when it comes to Afridi, after him. Unless there is more than meets the eye...

In any case, great news no matter what.

Great stuff.

Fantastic effort.

Maybe the mayor has Jamaican roots and follows cricket, heard that Afridi is passing by and decided to name a day he can come by and take his picture with her after him.

"Whereas the world of cricket and Pakistan National Team is blessed to have Mr Afridi as one of its members"--- A sentence from Proclamation. :afridi

Mixed feelings...Feel proud a Pakistani getting this honor but on the other hand who gets it....the clown Afridi. I think someone like Wasim Akram deserves this, not only for his cricketing feats but also for spreading diabetes awareness. If our people really consider Afridi a champion of our cricket, then our future does not looks that bright.

Shahid Afridi has got all the honours of the world of late such as this one, the one he got for his Polio Campaign, the fund raising one, the memorial shield in recognition to his services awarded to him by Chief of Army Staff etc. Surely, a great ambassador for Pakistan cricket.

Even though he is well passed his retirement and should have called it a day with honor, I see a not very pleasant exit for him after Amir Sohail has become the chief selector.

No wonder the released a criminal from the Jail without punishing him, will never go to such state which honors afridi.

Well done Lala, Representing his own country and still getting hate from some cretins

mashallah wow great honour but any one knows the reason behind it?/

Having such a day for an overrated cricketer is extremely embarrassing. People in America wouldn't know the difference between Cricket the Sport from the insect!
