https://youtu.be/m1W-oXZ_31U. The question posed to a BJP minister and RSS ideologue. Is fascism on the rise in modis India. I myself don't know much about this. But found it an interesting and entertaining debate.

Audience was lively. Worst moment was "What about YOUR ISIS ?"

Stay classy Ram Madhav. Another facepalm moment was that guy on the panel calling the female Kashmiri Hindu co-panellist the "ambassador from Pakistan" - what a clown, if anyone doesn't agree with the GOI they are a Pakistani plant ?

Ram Madhav was an embarrassment and completely out of his depth here - I can't believe he agreed to take part in the first place, surely he must have watched clips of this show before signing up.

Every time Madhav made a ridiculous comment he would offer up a silly smile too lol.

This insecurity is prevalent on both sides of the border. Using cheap paper patriotism to silence legitmiate critics of the government. Like when he said u can criticise BJP but not India what does that even mean.

im surprised to al jazeera and oxford union - watched this when it was uploaded, thought a thread would have been up by now.

That interview was nearly as bad as the ex isi intelligent guy, some really cringe worthy statements.

I still get a kick out of that Asad Durrani interview, so many wild quotes like "If ISI were sheltering OBL then they were doing a good job", "There was no ISI wrongdoings" and my favourite "ISI is a very benign institution".

By the way, last week Pakistanis were complaining about Mehdi asking hard questions of Hina Rabbani Khar, now this week Indians are complaining Mehdi's a Pakistani agent and an Islamist ! Poor guy can't win.

Mehdi hassan asked fair and pertinent question. It was stupid mistake on part of BJP to send a Buffon like Ram Mafhav in that interview. They should have sent Nalin koli . I am no fan of BJP but you cannot generalized a nation 1.2 billion on basis of a few incidents.Ram Madhav failed miserably to put forward this point and came looking haughty and arrogant.

This guy is really amazing. I can understand someone being moderate and oppose extreme forces in your own religion. But this man looks more anti Muslim than Donal Trump.

Best part from a Pak Kashmiri in response to Ram pledging to 'liberate' 'Pok': "Sir, I'm not from Pakistan occupied Kashmir, I am from Azad Kashmir - I am free!"

found that one truly embarrassing, the whole audience was just gob smacked at every response, didnt he say something like the terrorist killings in Peshawar last yr was collateral damage.

hina last week held herself imo, but i didnt really know who she was,

found these to be good, as he really got the debate going, making the guest conflate:

Some classless comments from the BJP ministry there but can expect anything from.Hyderabad bunch of fascists.

India was doing great under Congress. Its only after Modi and his hindu thugs took over that the world's started mocking us. As much as i supported Modi's campaign to kick Congress out of power due to their impotency, i've started hating myself now for supporting these jahil gundey badmash of Sangh Pariwar. The sooner we get rid off these idiots, the better it would be India's internal peace and harmony and our global image as a vibrant secular society. Although i personally find the fascist allegations to be nothing but sensational tags to troll and embarrass Indians at world stage but there is no denying that things haae taken a wrong turn in recent times. Everyone knows i'm all for animal rights and cow respect but BJP's politics on the whole beef ban issue has been despicable to say the least. These paendoos have hijacked Hinduism. There is nothing Hindu or Indian about these backward morons

We were developing then. We are developing now. Nothing's changed as far as economy or policy is concerned. But the nation is breaking up and the sooner we realize it the better. India has been a laughing stock of political debates in last year or so. Sadly people are blinded by Modi red carpets. Well everyone wants a chunk of India and Modi is the ultimate sell out.

There are changes like implementing schemes properly rather than as vote bank gimmicks.

Do you congress initially lowered number of gas cylinders / home to 6 and changed it to 12 just before election dates announced??? These kind of tactics what created the huge subsidy issues.

By the way looks like scams doesn't matter to you.

Recently 2 large scale FDI in Railway announced and work is already started on this, this is pending from 2006....we almost lost a decade on this. During 2006 China bought locomotives (CML)from GE now two Chinese companies bid for the above 2 FDI ( they were rejected in early stage that's different story).

Looks like you are not getting latest news from Bihar, Jungle Raj is back there with Hyper secular Gatbhandan ruling

Gotta give it to Modi ji. His fascist goons are always willing to blow themselves for the supreme leader. :14:

That is me being unbiased and truthful. One should participate in elections with clear support to good candidate and honour the position of the PM. That does not mean one should not express concerns to the nation going in the wrong direction. BJP's hindu sangh pariwar thugs have hurt my nation. The India that i so love and adore is now bleeding for a communal dagger has been pierced through its heart by these Sanghis. The nation is getting embarrassed today in talk shows and abroad. The image of India has taken a massive dip under this regime of topibaaz. 100s of hindu outfits have mushroomed in India ever since Modi came to power. Where have they come from? What is their agenda? Wake up. Modi is getting booted out. Intellectuals are returning their awards, Delhi and BIhar have rejected BJP's communal politics.

What was he thinking before appearing over there for all he has made his chances of gaining a ministerial post even lesser.
I guess he thought it would similar to giving a lecture in Yale, idiot.

Wow!

A sanghi who can think! Where did you see that creature. On discovery or Nat Geo?

IDK out of all people why did BJP send Ram Madhav. He is a organiser not someone you send to face this.Though i dont have too high opinion of Mehdi Hasan.

Not sure if you are trolling or being naive on Bihar election.India never had a great image in USA or UK they have always put us down and not sure why do we need their approval to move ahead,Nehru tried that and look how that ended up.

Agree BJP has lot of conservative elements and we should pressure them and put them in control democratically. Also what changes are you not able to notice in the economy what about BSNL having operational profit after 9 years and AIR India having a goal now along with profit this year(Due to crude price and Financial stability).

Even CEO of ICICI bank has said the economic situation is much better than 18 months ago from becoming fragile 5 we are now much more prepared for US interest rate hike and other variables(credit should also go to RBI for the same).

I'm not too sure BJP sent him in any case i don't understand why we need British and American approval to do anything?

You would have done a better job instead of this guy. The problem with interviews is that if you are not a good debater, it does not matter if you are on the right side, the better talker wins. Good causes need articulate representatives.

If he attended without party approval then its a big mistake..And its not about approval, its more about putting across your point of view

So even you realize they won't be back in power?

Come 2019, BJP will be booted out of India by all minorities and 50% of Hindus who happen to put India above Sangh and in that scenario even if they remain single largest party through the help of 50% hindus they would have no moral right to govern India,

The nation booted Atal Bihari out in 2004
and only 2 years since Modi took over, we have already realized we got fooled twice in a decade by Sangh Pariwar and its right wing hindu outfits. Never again will a BJP led coalition ever storm into the sacred place we call parliament of India

That happen always . No single party keeps and keeps on winning. Congress might return next or next to next time and after that BJP will return again.

Seems like some RSS members are unhappy with the way ram displayed his fascism. Perhaps he should have been a good speaker like Hitlar, right?

Ignorance again, their alliance with AIADMK did the damage to them where they lost 39-40 seats which could had gone for them had they persuaded DMK to stay with them.

Social media will make sure Rahul Gandhi will never become the PM of India any other from Congress might.

who could that be ? I dont see anyone else being groomed for that role in the future. Priyanka ?

If no one comes then defn they won't come to power they probably might end up as an ally in the "Grand alliance".My guess would be ideally Chidambaram,Sachin Pilot from Congress and i guess some from JDU ,RJD if grand alliance comes to power but see how unlikely that is.

This is ATG level trolling I guess. ;-)

A level where you have no idea what the poster genuinely feels even when you try hard to understand.

The Gandhis dont share power. They wont project anyone except a Gandhi.

The congress doesnt play second fiddle in alliances as well esp in Center.Ask the UF govt of Devegowda and Gujral.

Thing is that at the center there is no alternative to Modi.

Then BJP will keep coming to power due to Congress' stupidity unless JDU-RJD-SP-CPI/M-BJD-NCP combination hits magical mark of 150 above which btw would be tragic for the economy and Industries as such.

150?More like 180 to 200.Because whoever among Congress or BJP hits 200 will form the govt. And i would be highly surprised if BJP doesnt hit 250 in 2019.

LOL at Modi getting 250 seats in 2019! :))) :)))

Hopefully we have one nation by 2019.

Well apart from all the articles he's written denouncing Daesh, Taliban, al-Qaeda and all Islamist terrorism, as well as his regular criticisms of Saudi Arabia yes he is an extremist.

I'm glad we have such profound thinkers on here.

Don't forget he grilled Yasir Qahdi on homophobia and denounced Muslims who engage in the belief of conspiracy theories, yet somehow Mehdi Hassan is an extremist.

I wished Mehdi would have retortated with "My "ISIS"? What about YOUR Anders Breivik?".

You can never trust mehdi hassan you don't know if he is using taqiya.

Well we all know who are fascits in India and globally. So just enjoy the show but lets not go there. If it helps wake up and smell the coffee, read world views about what world thinks who real fascits are.

Great and well thought reply. Maybe you should have appeared at the show as a RSS member.

Mehdi was continuously trolled and spammed on social media by the bhakts, so he decided to write an article in the Indian Express.

http://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/columns/ram-madhav-mehdi-hasan-al-jazeera/

“Anger and intolerance,” observed the greatest of Indians, Mohandas Gandhi, “are the enemies of correct understanding”.

So what would the Mahatma say if he were alive today, in modern India, with his own Twitter account and Facebook page? What would he make of the anger and intolerance of the country’s right-wing internet trolls, long ago dubbed the “bhakts”, and condemned by the former Indian intelligence official B. Raman for their “abuse, vituperation, disinformation [and] character assassination”?

To witness from afar the angry antics of the bhakt army — or the Modi toadies to quote Salman Rushdie — is one thing; to be on the receiving end of their relentless hate and bile is another. Over the past three years, on my show, Head to Head, on Al Jazeera English, I have interviewed more than 30 high-profile guests from around the world, ranging from Israeli settler leader Dani Dayan to “New Atheist” scientist Richard Dawkins to the former Pakistani ISI chief Asad Durrani.

Yet never have I experienced the sort of backlash that I have had to endure online over the past few days, in the wake of my headline-grabbing interview with Ram Madhav, national general secretary of the BJP and former spokesperson for the RSS. Not from Nigerians, Israelis, Egyptians, Pakistanis, Palestinians, Americans or Britons.

Hell, it seems, has no fury like a Hindu nationalist scorned. I have been denounced and defamed as a “closet Islamist”, a “funder of ISIS”, and — perhaps the most damning appellation of all in The Bumper Book of Bhakt Political Insults — a “Pakistani”.

For the record, I have no ties to Pakistan whatsoever. I am, you might say, a child of India: Born and raised in the UK but to parents born and raised in India. I spent most of my summer holidays as a child in Hyderabad and even got married there.

Yet in today’s Narendra Modi-led India, those Muslims who dare speak out are told to go to Pakistan; those liberals or leftists who dare condemn the BJP for creating a “climate of intolerance” are accused of trying to “defame the government and in turn… defame the image of India”, to quote Madhav on my show, thereby conflating the ruling BJP with the nation of India.

As for the laughable charge of “Islamism”, I happen to be the author of a piece headlined, “There is nothing Islamic about a state”. My 2014 Head to Head interview with Muslim thinker Tariq Ramadan was titled, “Has Political Islam failed?” (Yes, almost a decade ago, I gave a speech in which I regrettably and foolishly quoted a verse from the Quran that refers, metaphorically, to unthinking non-Muslims as “cattle” but — and here’s what the bhakts conveniently overlook — I also quoted a verse from the Quran that refers to unthinking Muslims as “cattle”, too.)

But why focus on the message when you can shoot the messenger? Let’s be clear: There was no conspiracy against Madhav or the BJP. First, it was pure coincidence that my interview, recorded in Oxford on December 7, was aired on December 25, the day the Indian prime minister arrived in Lahore to meet with his Pakistani counterpart. Believe it or not, Prime Minister Modi did not share in advance with Al Jazeera his secret plans to wish Nawaz Sharif a happy birthday in person.

Second, prior to appearing on Head to Head, Madhav was personally briefed by my producers about the “gladiatorial” format of the show and claimed to have enjoyed watching my earlier confrontation with General Durrani. (Perhaps he and his supporters only enjoy interviews in which I pose tough questions to Pakistanis.)

Third, the title of the show, “Is India flirting with fascism?”, is no more biased or provocative than the title of my 2014 Head to Head with feminist Mona Eltahawy, “Do Arab men hate women?”, or of my 2013 clash with author Irshad Manji, “What is wrong with Islam today?”

The inconvenient truth for the bhakts is that a senior BJP official not only pointed at his Muslim interviewer and said “your ISIS” but also admitted to supporting the RSS vision of “Akhand Bharat”, in which Pakistan and Bangladesh are re-united with India. The BJP has been forced to disown Madhav’s comments, which undermined Modi’s visit to Pakistan and gave the opposition plenty of anti-Hindutva ammunition.

Madhav’s latest claim that his “Akhand Bharat” remarks were in relation to a “cultural idea” is disingenuous, to say the least. Speaking to me on Head to Head, the BJP national general secretary referred explicitly to political, not cultural, unification: “If two Germanies can come together, if two Vietnams can come together, what makes you to think… that Pakistan and India cannot come together?”

This important admission came at a personal cost: The bhakt army continues to hound me on social media. So, do I regret interviewing Ram Madhav? Not at all. As the old adage goes, the job of a journalist is to “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable”. It is a principle that has underpinned every single one of my interviews, whether with the former prime minister of Israel or the current foreign minister of Qatar.

Now, whether Madhav regrets appearing on Head to Head, however, is another matter. On the issue of “Akhand Bharat”, after all, the former RSS spin doctor has a lot more spinning to do.

im truly glad you've finally accepted the reality that Hindu nationalism can never be benign. And that the RSS are clearly a fascist organisation. Its refreshing to know there are Indians here who can accept such criticism without throwing their toys out of the pram.

coming onto the show, well what was very instructive to me was the RSS's desire for akhund bharat. I must say the delusion and inferiority complex just shone through. It was very very enlightening but not surprising at all. After the show I was truly glad we have Pakistan on this earth.

Saw 20 mins. This guy has been humiliated to the core and frankly comes across as dumb and brain dead. Speaking with an Apu accent doesnt help either.

No wonder the RSS fascists are going mad. Their dirty secrets have been exposed to an international audience.

Fascism has become a bad word, just like democracy has become a good word. Fascism is just extreme patriotism, nothing else. India needs fascism if it has to grow and develop.

IDK why people take Mehdi Hasan seriously. He has his agendas.Too much significance given to him on Twitter.Glad that most of the Indian Media has ignored the man.

It must be really hurting, on the one hand they are saying it doesn't matter and Mehdi's got an agenda and on the other, they are defending the very ideas that he has exposed. If you are proud of your ideology, why worry about exposure.

Mehdi Hasan also grilled over Hina Rabbani Khar too and also questioned Pakistans actions. He has no links to Pakistan but is a British Indian with links to hyderabad it's sad to see some online trolls calling him a Pakistani sympathiser.

It's like one of the advisers to BJP who was there as an expert called one of the Indian Hindu academics who was arguing that there is rising intolerance in India saying is she an ambassador for Pakistan. They just come across as juvenile n petty. When academics use language like that what can u expect the common man to do.

Mehdi has criticised Islamists constantly rips into the Saudis. Even questioned a Qatari minister on Al jazeera about their govts link to ISIS. These same trolls were probably loving it when he was ripping to the Pakistani govts policy on drone strikes the double game with the taliban etc. But God forbid he question India. Surely BJP have a better mouthpiece than that guy. The your ISIS comment was pathetic when Mehdi is closer to India than ISIS. And being a Shia he is Isis number one enemy.
