It was a must win match for both teams to proceed for Super Six. Australians were low on confidence after 2 recent defeats against Kiwis and Pakistanis.
Brian Lara was still in Aussie minds ( 2 months earlier his 153* in Test Match captured headlines). It was a slightly cloudy day at Old Trafford.
Mcgrath yet again crafted his name in history books, totally destroyed West Indian batting line up. Ridley Jacobs carried the bat and apart from him Chanderpaul was the only other player who managed to enter in double figures.
Ambrose did create havoc in Australian top order but 110 was too low a total to defend and Reliable Bevan/Steve Waugh got them over the line and Aussies won by 6 wickets.
But was it the first time Aussies completely shattered a top rated Team’s batting line up i. That world cup ?
No. Similar things happened in World cup final 20 days later.
