In a harrowing turn of events, renowned screenwriter Khalilur Rehman Qamar was allegedly kidnapped, tortured, and looted in Lahore earlier this week. The incident, which has sent ripples through the entertainment industry and beyond, was reported to have occurred around midnight on Monday, July 15. Qamar held a press conference today (Monday) to speak about the incident.

According to the FIR registered at the Sundar Police Station in Lahore, Qamar received a phone call from an unknown number close to midnight. The caller, who identified herself as Amna Urooj, claimed to be a fan of Qamar and expressed a desire to collaborate with him on a TV drama.

Qamar, known for his popular dramas like Meray Paas Tum Ho and Pyarey Afzal, agreed to meet her. He reached the given location at approximately 4:40am, where Urooj welcomed him into her house. However, soon after he sat down, there was a knock on the door, and around seven armed men entered the room. The men conducted a body search, seizing Rs60,000, an iPhone 11, a Bank Al-Habib ATM card, and Qamar’s national identity card.

The FIR said the abductors withdrew over Rs200,000 from a separate bank account belonging to Qamar. The kidnappers allegedly told him that they had orders to kill him, demanding a ransom of Rs10 million.

During his press conference, Qamar spoke about his frightening experience. He explained his reasons for meeting Urooj at such an odd hour, citing medical advice to avoid daytime outings due to health issues.

“I am sick and my doctor has strictly told me to not go out in the daytime for five years. Even if he hadn’t said that, we meet people at night and you don’t differentiate between men and women. When there’s no objection to me meeting men at night, then why should there be an objection to me agreeing to see this woman at the break of dawn? Because this happened at 4:40am, I had not agreed to go at night when I got the call. For the past 15 days, she was pestering me to see her.”

A reporter alleged that Urooj, in her statement to the police, claimed that she and Qamar had been exchanging text messages and pictures for a week. Qamar vehemently denied this, stating that Urooj wanted to be in his drama and that he no longer had a record of the messages.

In the midst of the conference, the writer shamed women in showbiz (again), perhaps as a rebuttal of sorts to claims that he fell for a honey trap. “The girls in my field, the kind of clothes they wear and the way they talk, I’ve been seeing that for the past 27 years now. It’s nothing new to me,” he said, in response to a reporter alleging that the woman did not seem the type to be cast in dramas.

He also added that he did not know the woman would be alone at home.

A reporter pointed out that Qamar is known for making controversial statements about women, and now that he’s been kidnapped by one, perhaps there was some kind of explanation for all of this.

Qamar struggled to make sense of the connection being drawn between his past statements and the recent kidnapping incident. The press conference then became chaotic as reporters cross-questioned him, leading the police to end the event and escort the writer out.

Ironically, following the incident, a 2019 interview of Qamar has also resurfaced in which he mockingly says that if women want equality, they should consider kidnapping a man — him.

“I spoke to a feminist group about equality. I asked them if they’d ever heard about a gang of men kidnapping a woman. They assured me they have. I asked them why don’t women do the same. If you wish to strive for equality then kidnap men as well. Rob a bus, gang rape a man so that I can understand what you [women] mean by equality,” Qamar said in the video

Police reveal details of arrest, torture of writer Khalilur Rehman Qamar

The Lahore police claim to have apprehended a 12-member gang, including a woman, responsible for honey-trapping renowned playwright Khalilur Rehman Qamar.

The gang was caught with modern weapons, a large amount of money, and mobile phones. Authorities are now reaching out to more potential victims of this criminal group.

The incident involved the gang kidnapping Qamar on the pretext of scriptwriting, extorting a ransom of Rs10 million, and erasing data from his mobile phone to cover their tracks. The gang had been planning and executing major criminal activities, targeting high-profile individuals.

Addressing a press conference over the incident in Lahore on Monday with DIG Imran Kishwar, Qamar recounted the events that led to his kidnapping and robbery. He claimed he had been barred by doctors from going out during the day, so he went to meet the woman late at night.

Carefully planned operation

DIG Imran Kishwar revealed that the gang had planned and carried out major incidents, adding that the police recovered data from Khalilur Rehman Qamar's mobile, identified the woman and caught her accomplices. The writer was abducted and robbed, he added.

The DIG further said the gang had meticulously planned the operation, contacting Qamar on July 15 under the pretence of discussing a drama script. Amna Urooj, the main conspirator, had been in touch with Qamar for 10 to 15 days, exchanging phone calls and pictures before luring him to her residence.

The DIG said Khalilur Rehman was kidnapped by armed men and Rs10 million ransom was demanded of him. The suspects also withdrew money through his ATM card and later deleted all the data from his mobile phone, Kishwar added.

The officer said they traced the woman by recovering data from Qamar's phone, adding that 12 suspects, including the woman Amna, were arrested. Two more members of the gang were still wanted, while two more victims of the gang have been identified and are being contacted, DIG Kishawar claimed.

Modern weapons were recovered from the suspects, who were working with women.

Amna's statement

Meanwhile, the police also recorded the statement of Amna Urooj, the central suspect in the honey-trap case. She is claimed to have told the police that she was in touch with Qamar for 10 to 15 days over the phone, and they also exchanged pictures.

She further claims to have told the police that Qamar asked her to meet, after which she invited him over to her place.

Police have said the suspect, Amna Urooj, a resident of Gujranwala, duped high-profile people and extorted huge sums of money. The incident is being investigated from various aspects, police officials added.

Khalilur Rehman Qamar says kidnappers mentioned names of two well-known actors

Renowned screenwriter and dramatist Khalilur Rehman Qamar has claimed that his kidnappers mentioned the names of actors Noman Ijaz and Saba Qamar during his abduction.

In a podcast interview, Qamar detailed his kidnapping experience, stating that he initially hesitated to file an FIR because the kidnappers had named Noman Ijaz and Saba Qamar.

"I despise Noman Ijaz, but he is a very good actor. Despite my differences with Saba Qamar, I admire her acting. These are not the kind of people who would do such a thing," Qamar said, suggesting that the kidnappers aimed to confuse and mentally disturb him.

Qamar expressed surprise at the support he received from his Indian fans during the ordeal, contrasting it with the hostility and mockery he faced in Pakistan. "I didn't know the kidnappers' motives. I was just worried about my wife and daughters. When they tortured me, I told them to kill me if they wanted," he added.

He shared that his wife now wishes to leave Pakistan due to the distress caused by the incident, but he remains deeply attached to his homeland and has no plans to emigrate.

The kidnapping and robbery incident occurred last week in Lahore. According to the police, a woman called Qamar and invited him to her house under the pretext of discussing a drama project. Upon his arrival, armed men abducted him and carried out the robbery.

Qamar reportedly paid a large sum to the kidnappers, who then released him. The Sundar police station in Lahore registered a case based on Qamar's statement.

The first information report (FIR) states that the suspects tortured Qamar and took him to various locations.

Qamar alleged that the kidnappers threatened to kill him and demanded money from his relatives. The FIR also mentions that the suspects stole Qamar's mobile phone, watch, and cash, and transferred Rs250,000 from his ATM card.

The scriptwriter further stated in the FIR that the kidnappers blindfolded him and left him in a deserted area before fleeing.

Khalilur Rehman honey trap case: Prime suspect handed over to police on four-day remand

Amna Aruj, accused in the kidnapping case of well-known Pakistani drama writer Khalilur Rehman Qamar, has been remanded to police custody for an additional four days.

This development came after the suspect’s initial three-day physical remand ended and she was presented before the Anti-Terrorism Court in Lahore.

The hearing, conducted by Judicial Magistrate Nabeela Amir, sought clarifications from Aruj regarding the allegations against her. Aruj, who works as a model, stated that she had only invited Qamar and denied any involvement in kidnapping.

Further inquiries by the court revealed that Aruj admitted to withdrawing Rs287,000 from Qamar's ATM, which she claimed was handled by Hassan Shah, who allegedly kept the money.

Following these admissions and considering the ongoing investigations, Magistrate Amir decided to extend Aruj's custody to assist in further unraveling the details of the case.

Renowned scriptwriter had earlier claimed that he was abducted and robbed in Lahore.

Khalil alleged that Amna lured him to her house under the pretext of discussing a potential drama project. Once he arrived, armed men kidnapped him and was released after paying a substantial ransom.

According to the FIR, the suspects robbed Qamar of his mobile phone, watch, cash, and transferred Rs250,000 from his ATM card. The playwright added that the kidnappers blindfolded him and left him in a deserted area before fleeing.

Playwright’s case: Honey-trap gang’s mastermind arrested

Police on Tuesday arrested the alleged mastermind of the gang involved in honey trapping playwright Khalilur Rehman Qamar.

A senior official, on condition of anonymity, told Dawn that Hassan Shah and his accomplice, Rafiq, were arrested in Peshawar and brought to Lahore for investigation.

Earlier, police had arrested 12-member gang, including Amna Arooj, on July 21. The case took a sensational turn on Tuesday when a video clip surfaced on social media allegedly showing Qamar with a woman.

A police official told Dawn that investigation had revealed that Qamar and the woman were engaged in an ‘indecent activity’ when a video was recorded. He said the woman and her accomplices were using the video to blackmail Qamar.

The investigation also revealed that Qamar was fabricating the robbery and kidnap story and lodged the case just to retrieve and destroy the footage.

The Sundar Police Station had registered a case on charges of robbery, kidnap on the complaint of Qamar.

REMAND: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) extended the physical remand of Amna Arooj for two more days.

Police presented Arooj before the court on completion of her previous remand and sought extension.

The investigating officer stated that the police needed to recover the ransom amount.

When ATC Judge Khalid Arshad asked Arooj whether she knew about the money, she said it might be with Hassan Shah or Zeeshan, other suspects in the case.

A lawyer for Qamar said Arooj had close connections with the other suspects and knew all of them. He claimed that his client was a pious man.

The judge expressed surprise at the lawyer’s claim, saying, “A pious man usually offers tahajjud (night prayers) at four in the morning.”

Arooj started crying in the court, saying her father was ill and she had two sisters to take care of while she was the sole breadwinner of her family. She complained about injustice being done to her, expressing a desire for death due to her situation.

Arooj alleged that both Hassan Shah, a property dealer, and Qamar blackmailed her and added that Shah, who was like a brother to her, knew about Qamar’s blackmail. She claimed that both men were powerful and she got stuck between them.

She also revealed that Shah had leaked a video in which Qamar was insisting on a relationship with her.

The woman said she had invited Qamar to her residence but she did not kidnap him as the kidnap plan was orchestrated by Shah.
