Former Australian batsman Michael Hussey has advised Indian bowlers to take pace off the ball to tackle formidable opener Fakhar Zaman when India clashes with arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup at Dubai on September 19. On a roll, Zaman has became the sixth international batsman and the first Pakistani player to score a double hundred, smashing 210 off just 156 deliveries against Zimbabwe in the fourth ODI at Bulawayo.

He also surpassed West Indies legend Viv Richards, becoming the quickest player to score 1,000 runs in ODIs. En route to his double ton, Zaman also posted the highest individual score for Pakistan, bettering Saeed Anwar’s 194 against India in 1997.

Hussey, who played 79 Tests and 185 ODIs, said it would take a very disciplined effort to outwit the in-form Zaman. ”So plans for India against Fakhar (Zaman) is got to be nice, tight line and length, be very disinclined and try and maintain that pressure, try and build up some pressure on him with some dot balls and make him go for the big shots earlier than what he wants to do,” 43-year-old Hussey told PTI.

“I thing change of pace could work against him because he goes hard at the ball, taking the pace off it (the ball) could be advantageous.” Hussey, a commentator with Star Sports for the Tamil Nadu Premier League, described the left-handed Zaman as an attacking batsman. Zaman had scored a match-winning hundred in the ICC Champions Trophy final last year against India.

“Fakhar Zaman from Pakistan, what great form he is been off late and who could forget his century in the ICC Champions Trophy (final) against India, not too long ago,” he said. ”Such an exciting player, very attacking, likes to score quickly, backs himself and plays with no fear and he is hard to bowl to, because he can score all-round the ground. The margin for error for the bowlers is very very small,” added Hussey.

Hussey predicts that India and Pakistan will be favourites in the six-nation Asia Cup but said Afghanistan, who have confirmed their participation, can spring a surprise. ”Looking ahead towards the Asia Cup, India and Pakistan are the favourites, both been playing some excellent ODI cricket and quality ODI teams,” he said.

“But the surprise package could be Afghanistan, any team with Rashid Khan and Mujeeb (Ur Rahman) in them, is not easy to beat, so keep an eye, so if they score enough runs, they are going to be hard to beat,” Hussey, who amassed 6,235 Test runs, said.

Same 'strategy' is applicable to 90% of batsmen who ever played! :yk

Not too sure about what's going to happen but I haven't paid enough attention to Fakhar playing a shot against a ball that has the pace taken off it. If the pace is off then he's going to have to nudge the ball around and then kill Kuldeep and Chahal as soon as they come on to bowl.

I m just Happy Fakhar is such a world wide name in such a short time that people are scared of him..
He might not score a century against India every time but he would definately up his game..

Kuldeep has a pretty good wrong'un. He will not be easy to tonk like Fakhar did against Jaddu and Ashwin.

Chahal is like Mishra. A mental midget. He either bowls superbly or runs away the moment he gets tonked for a few boundaries.

These negative tactics have already costed us the CT, when we didn't go to take Fakhar's wicket, rather went to contain the runs, and he finally took the game away from us. Now, Hussey wants us to try some more negative tactics at Asia cup.

On a sidenote, our bowlers already trundle. Don't know how slower does he want us to bowl.

It's magnificent to see Fakhar gaining so much attention in such a short time. I guess he has an edge against India due to his hitting ability against the spin. His battle with Indian spinners will be really good to watch.

Seems lots of people see Fakhar Zaman as a proper threat which is good as we haven't had a batsman like that for a long time. I hope Zaman can do good against India again, if he gets out early, then our chances of winning will really go down.

He would struggle against Kuldeep. In CT, he hit an over the hill Ash-Jad

My man Fakhar is getting famous. I hope he reaches heights of Virender Sehwag and achieves much more. Love watching his brave batting!

But but but the saying is no 1 in India knows who FZ is.

Kuldeep is a high quality bowler but the thing is that before Fakhar made his debut, he was known to murder spinners back in the day so that is his strength. Still you never know what could happen it could either go two ways.

While i agree that Zaman is definitely in the form of his life and Indian bowlers need to have the strategy to get him early but some of the replies in this thread are hilarious.

1. Michael Hussey is not an Indian. He retired not too long ago and is active commentator. So shouldn’t he know who Zaman is?

2. Hussey mentioned Afghanistan and Rashid also in this interview. So probably the whole discussion was about Asia cup and probable winners.

Since India and Pakistan are two top contenders. And Hussey was giving this interview in India so naturally he would focus on players of Pakistan. Asif Ali is new amd entire Pakistan batting depends on Fakhar when it comes to scoring quick because rest all of them accumulators including Babar. So definitely Zaman would be centre of discussion.

How Indians are scared or obsessed here?

As an Indian fan there are a few that gave me nightmares. Carl hooper was one. Jayasuriya was the worst of all. Fakar hasn't gotten there yet. He is in the middle of a dream run. Eventually teams will find a way.

What about Matthew Hayden and Andy Flower?

Yes.To win against India Pakistan has to play attacking cricket just like they did in CT final.Because India always plays attacking cricket in ODIs.Fakhar is leading the way to play fearless cricket.I don't see any other in the Pak line up except Shoib. But Shoib has lost his ability to score big.I still have no faith on Asif.So if India can get Fakhar early ,the match should be half own by India.

How the mighty have fallen :((

This is brilliant. An ex great of the game giving tips to a top ranked side about how to bowl to a Pakistani batsman. Respect for Fakhar Zaman, he really is making a big name for himself in the world of cricket and it’s pleasing to see that he has really caught the attention of serious cricketers in their days!

Bowl around the wicket and try to get the ball to straighten or move in a little bit. Doesn’t it still work against him? I remember seeing teams successfully using this tactic against him. I don’t think slow balls will work since he looks to play long innings these days.

Good balls are good balls for everyone. Kohli, Root, Williamson anyone. Limited over games suit flashy players now more than ever. Two new balls. short boundaries. Batting wickets. Nasir Jamshed was very good against India. He was bit of a nightmare. He was able to stand still with minimal feet movement thrashe the bowlers around. Hafeez is another guy who always did well against India. Sohaib Malik has decent success against India, Salman Butt was another. Will Fakar be like one of them? We have to wait and see. May be India has issues with left handed openers :) Anwar/Jayasuriya were good agianst India.

It would be great if India had asked Hussey to help. Anyone can give advise to anyone without asking.

no stopping for FZ once he is in a mood. I am seeing another 100 against india in asia cup from FZ inshAllah

No bro. He's earning honest bread.

This reminds me of when people criticize Wasim cuz he is coaching some team in India... but a man got to earn a living! And these guys are professional. Kudos to Hussey for sharing his cricketing knowledge so far away from home!

Well I think any advice regardless should be appreciated. Especially when someone who averages around 80 with the bat and 116 against India. Not bad to give advice regarding such a batsman

Great performances by FZ but sample size against India is very small.

After playing first test against AUS, Shikhar Dhawan had avg of 185 against AUS.

Let's just hope he doesnt replicate Sehwag in his comedy and cringy one-liners.

On topic, he is a proper threat and the most in-form batsman in the world atm.

Is Michael Hussey Indian batting coach?? Why he is focusing only India?

I think time has come for Pakistan to start playing Fakhar in tests, you don't want to miss out on scintillating form of a player. I feel he will do well in tests.
