Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez’s return to the national side faces a dim prospect, especially after the 36-year-old failed to get his bowling action cleared, said Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shaharyar Khan in an exclusive interview with Daily Express.

Shaharyar further added that Hafeez’s illegal bowling action led him to be stripped off the status of an all-rounder and he will play as a batsman if he ever got picked for the national side.

"Hafeez has requested to be tested in Loughborough, Cardiff and we obliged because he is a senior player of the team. However, if he fails to clear his test once again, it will be extremely difficult for the selection committee to include him in the national side," said Shaharyar.

While talking about who will replace Test captain Misbahul Haq, who is expected to step down from the helm after the New Zealand and Australia tours, Shaharyar revealed that a successor hasn’t been decided yet.

"We haven’t decided who will lead the Test side once Misbah steps down,” he said. “If the upcoming tours in Australia and New Zealand go well then we can even ask Misbah to continue leading the side for a while."

He further added, "Misbah and Younus Khan have been performing well for Pakistan and are in contention to remain in the side. However, they are nearing their retirements and for the future of the team we must make preparations from now."

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) enters its second edition in 2017 and PSL Chairman Najam Sethi had announced earlier that the T20 league would become an independent entity, separate from the PCB. And Shaharyar revealed that the board itself gave permission for this to happen.

"The league authorities feel that they will enjoy more freedom as an independent company as they will be able to take administrative decisions on their own. They can certainly do that as long as there are no violations of PCB rules. This decision was made by the Board of Governors."

So basically if Hafeez passes his test he's going to be the 2nd allrounder we choose

On the basis of his bowling... which he hasn't used.. in international cricket... for more than a year now.. in Australia....

I'm a fan of his, but time to pull the plug.

Bring Misbah as ODI and T20 captain along with player Younis, Shafiq will not be bad idea. Misbah can continue until 2023 with them.

if hafeez fails the test, is gone for good... he could have easily maintain his place in test squad if he swallowed his ego to bat at no.6 or 7 just before sarfraz in tests... he was a test opener for pitches like road only even then if ball swings he is gone....

Don't think Misbah will acquiesce quite so easily though. He's on record as saying that it's becoming harder and harder to prepare mentally for playing test cricket and that he finds it difficult staying away from his family for such long periods. After the Australian tour, it's time to bring in a new captain and develop a blueprint for success in the next four to five years. Misbah has nothing left to prove anyway, and it's not as if we are arranging a test series with India any time soon.

Hello?

Is anybody paying attention?

This makes it crystal clear that not only did Hafeez fail his Test in Chennai in July 2015, but he has also recently failed further unofficial testing.

That's dynamite really.

Misbah may continue!!! But he shouldn't continue!! He should say good bye in a nice way not like others!!!

The poor guy has been trying to retire for ages, just let him go home to his wife and kids.

If misbah is performing then churn out every last bit of runs out of him and his captaincy aswell

What if his heart isn't in it by the end of the Australian tour?

Its really easy to make such a comment while sitting in your room.

But a guy who has worked tiredlessly to get a spot in the team, to have his unlikely dream come true, he would never let go no matter what.

Pakistanis often complain that we dont retire at that right time, but only a few understand that the way that dream of representing Pakistan is achieved is not done easily.

Hope Misbah is not reading or listening to news! Would be a nervous wreck by now.

Just put your head down mate, deliver us the NZ & Aus series on a platter and accept the thanks of a grateful nation - then retire.

He has a family too. He has already captained the team for several years and done the unthinkable.

PCB asked him to stay on - I doubt he intends to keep playing for much longer.

Are you serious? You do realize he's been "forced" to carry on by the PCB chief even after he's expressed desire to bow out gracefully.

Wait, doesn't he have a A contract? And now they wont even select Hafeez in the team?

So what if he has family? These are the setbacks of playing at national level.

They know this before hand, this cant be used as an excuse.

Obviously he will captain depending on his own mood and feeling, and he should.

He was not forced. He was requested. He has always said that he will look at the situation then continue.

He will be captaining islamabad anyways in feb

A request is made in person, not by coming on national tv and emotionally blackmailing.

Huh? I was saying that in response to your claim that 'he would never let go'.

This is not an excuse. It's a fact of life. You have to move on at some time. And family etc. is one of the reasons.

He was ready to move on but he was asked to stay.

Should retire after the Australia series. No point in forcing him to stay when he wanted to go after the England uae series. We have made him carry on longer than he wanted too.

Hopefully we perform well in Australia and he retires on a high.
