Three years ago, if I had told someone that Misbah could still continue to play for 3 more years, I
would had been laughed at and mocked. Infact, people din't even expect him to last till the Champions Trophy, let alone till playing till the age of 40. The Same old discussion was bought up every now and then, "we need a young captain" “Misbah won't be there for World Cup 2015” “Misbah needs to make way for a youngster”

Infact, Misbah himself was about to hang his boots even before the Champions Trophy,
as he was being offered a 2 year lucrative deal by Worcestershire. A flat and a jaguar car was also thrown in to the deal, plus a single year extention.

At one hand he had the option of not only playing for Pakistan but also captaining the National team ,which itself is an honor, while on they other hand he had a lucrative dealoffer, with Job Security, which you can't expect in Pakistan Cricket's National team.

When you are 38 years of age, your position in Pakistan National Cricket team is only alive till the time your form is alive, as soon as your form is gone, your spot from the national team also vanishes and you end up finding yourself back in the domestic set up and then later on being forced to retire.

Misbah surprisingly choose the former option, and 8 months later, he emerged not only as the highest scorer in ODI cricket for the year 2013, but also the highest scorer for all formats combined.

As Misbah touches the 40th mark today, he has proved to the world that age is just a “number” and you can't allow a number from stopping you to play.

Whether you love him or hate him, like him or loath him, that based upon your own personal opinion about him. But atleast we all could agree to one thing, that no matter how he plays, Misbah is in the form of his life at the age of 40 and breaks all myths about 30+ age being a constrain for cricketers from performing.

This itself motivates many of those players who are still playing domestic cricket in their 30s and hoping for a spot in the national team. This motivates people like me, to let me complete my study and have a shot at cricket. This motivates those people to move forward who are making a late break through in domestic cricket.

To sum it all up, here is a quote from Misbah-Ul-Haq from last year

"12 years ago on my test debut I was being told that I only have two to three years of cricket left............Today, I'm 39 and i'm still listening the same"-Misbah-Ul-Haq

Happy Bithday day Misbah ul Haq !!

Officially he turns 40 today, One of my favourite players.

May you have many more while captaining Pakistan across all formats. :gayle

Sheer will and belief in himself.

I'm sure if Misbah were an Aussie or Indian he wouldn't get so much bashing from his countrymen!!

He will lift The '15 WorldCup Insha'Allah!! :ik

2011 Belonged to Tendulkar , 2015 will belong to Misbah ............. the Great man deserves to end on a high note.

May you have many more while captining pakistan across both formats :gayle :gayle :gayle

Major having a field day. :misbah

Jokes aside, truly a gentleman and a great servant of Pakistan cricket. Sincere and honorable. You can see that this man is educated without having to verify his MBA.

Showed great mental strength and resolve to resurrect his career when he was dropped at the age of 36 in 2010, in spite of the initial "kit burning" tantrum. Deserves a proper send off next year at the World Cup but unfortunately he won't be lifting the cup. In any case, he'd be leaving with his head held high and will not be disappointed when he'd reflect back on his career.

Owes his career to Salman Butt though, without the spot fixing fiasco there was no way back for him.

Pointless statistics if one is a mohaliar. His averages, not outs, half centuries, centuries mean nothing if the nation suffers another mohali.

A very happy birthday to our most prolific captain of recent times, the savior of our Titanic, the man with iron fists and temperament, Mard-e-Momin! Mard-e-Haq! Misbah-ul-Haq!

Social media going crazy! :D
Misbah shares his birthday with 28th May, which is Youm-e-takbeer for Pakistanis :)

And at last from my side, Happy birthday skipper! May you lift the trophy at WC 2015, inshAllah! :) You've been a solid rock, taking on your haters and critics with nothing but performance! Rebuilding and leading a team of inconsistent performers with your world-class consistency, shared by only a few specially in this era!

He is nothing but an inspiration, not only for future cricketers but also the current lot. His extraordinary, superman-like fitness at the age of 40 and a performance curve shooting up at this age is indeed amazing!

Please include 'happy birthday' in the thread title as well :]

You gotta write something inspirational and wow-worthy today with your writing skills! :P

Shoaib Akhtar was once the Fastest bowler, Gary Sobers the greatest Cricket player ever, Viv Richards was the King, Highest Test Average Don Bradman, Tendulkar the Player that played international level cricket the longest & scored the most centuries . Shane Warne the greatest Leg spinner -------The Cricket player that broke all age barriers and played till he was 50 Misbah (maybe)....... We should be Proud that Misbah can be so fit and play so well. A true demonstration that age is only a number. But some Pakistani fans (or haters) Can't see greatness even if it is right in front of them.

What a great servant of Pak Cricket? Yes he may not have talent of some of the Pakistani greats before him but his service is no less considering the challenging time he became the captain.

Only an educated person who is cool as cucumber can have done it and he fit the bill just right.

#HappyBirthdayMisbah is trending at Top 2 in Pakistan right now.

Will move to the first position as the sun rises! After a period of hate and curses he had to face, people are starting to realize his value, services and contribution.

Out of Misbah's 70 50+ at international level. 52 of them have come after the age of 36. Surely highest % ever of career 50s at mid/late 30s.

One becomes better as they get older, thus we see the Aussies giving debuts to players who are in their 30s

Isn't it a coincidence that Misbah made his full time ODI captaincy debut on his 37th birthday in Belfast.

long live king Misbah! humble, honest and focused , you cant ask for anyone better especially for a side like Pakistan. Best batsman in the side and surely beyond the shadow of a doubt, one of the best in the world right now. I absolutely love this guy!!

A true professional who will never get the credit he deserves as being a professional in Pakistan doesn't hold much value :afridi

Happy Birthday Skipper...he looks lean and mean in that pic in the OP...getting fitter every year to be honest...and it is all hardwork...hopefully our younger generation (cricketers and other sportsman alike) can learn a thing or two from the hard work and dedication by Misbah....

Happy Birthday Misbah!

In'Sha'Allah he'll bring the World Cup home to Pakistan!

Still some hours to go before his bday hits N.America :)

But I definitely will try to write something decent for him - the guy's calm, cool attitude is something Pak cricket greatly needs! :)

Major was ready with his write-up waiting to publish it as soon it struck 12.

Probably a snow ball's chance in hell, theoreitcally speaking, but it would be the perfect send-off to the man who has put forth his best rearguard efforts for Pakistan, on and off the field, if Pakistan lift the world cup in 2015. Happy Birthday Misbah, Insh Allah you get your much awaited and deserved ODI century before you retire.

How long can he go on? He doesn't seem to be loosing his form unlike some other players when they were his age :srt

Happy Birthday King Misbah.... What a player...One of my favourites....

**Haters can stay out of this thread

No words will ever be enough to fully describe what he has done for Pakistan cricket.

In our worst hour, when we were being shamed and ridiculed, when all hope was lost, he helped us rise from the ashes.

His performance, his attitude, his behavior on and off the field, his tenacity...he has truly been a godsend.

Most importantly, he makes me feel truly proud of being a Pakistani.

One of the greatest if not THE greatest captain we have ever had, I wish him all the best for the future and a very happy birthday.

Jeevay Jeevay Misbah ul Haq!

What a player. What a gentleman.

The man is an inspiration to all cricketers that if you are fit and can perform then you can play as long as you want. His ability to absorb pressure is astounding. He comes when we are 3 down for nothing on board and makes sure we dont lose wickets. He helped us when we needed him the most after the spot fixing saga and for that i will always be thankful to him.

Statistically he is amongst our greats. A true player which the cricket world would surely miss as you need to be something else to make sure Pakistan team does not have any scandals.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MISBAH!!!! After mohali i never ever thought i would say this but you are one of my favorite players in this game.

Happy Birthday Captain
Inspite the fact that he has so many useless pebbles in his pocket he is still manage to keep this team at some respectable place.

really good

How many such sufferings have happened under your favorite Akhtar and Afridi? Or is it not called suffering if you surrender early instead of fighting? :afridi

All rise for the King a true Pakistani legend and very very underrated cricketer.

My favorite Pakistani captain. Happy birthday. And may u lead us in the world cup 15 and win it for us.

Happy Birthday Misbah.

My favourite Pakistani player over the past 4 or 5 years. People won't realise how valuable he is to the team until he retires - which I hope isn't anytime soon.

Happy birthday to the young man!

He surely is the least controversial and the most respected Pakistani cricketer of the modern era!

Pakistan cricket owes him a lot for all the calmness he has brought in to the team ever since he became captain.

Well educated, calm, collected, polite, not conspiracy riddled and above all a very fit person at 40 would put everyone else in the team to shame.

We love and admire your maturity Misbah.

Happy Birthday to the legend!!.

Find his fitness, calm demeanour, form, non-controversial(ness), mental toughness and the list could go on astounding at this age amidst an insane amount of unessecary criticism.

A true gentleman and a great servant for Pakistan cricket.

Hope he goes out on a high #2015WC In Shaa Allah!.

Am I missing something?

Before his come back in 2010 at the age of 36, he thought of burning his kit for continuously being ignored.

Thanks for sharing! Truly he showed a lot of character in dealing with the disappointments he faced in life!

btw - I'm working on my write up. I'll post it maybe in this thread (might make another thread for it..) in 1-2 days [who knows, I could be done with it by tonight!] :)

Just a work horse with no personality at all.
65 not out for life.

Hats of to misbah and his physical conditioning, i think he can go on and play test cricket for another 2/3 years atleast, he should be an inspiration to most pakistani players to fact hes still going strong at age of 40!

Cool! :) Waiting for it.

I do no think many people would be able to replicate what Misbah does at this age.

Misbah hasn't had to deal with the wear and tear of 10-20 years of international cricket. Had he been a regular feature of the team since his early 20s his wear and tear would have been more rapid.

Having a 40 year old player in the team is quite embarrassing though. Doesn't feel or sound right.

why is it embarrassing? So you're saying that we should drop Misbah just for his age and irrespect to his performance?

The guy is performing, age is just an excuse used by people.. Australia are always giving debuts to their 30+ year old players, as they have more experience and can handle pressure better

Never said we should drop him. We can't afford to, but it doesn't feel right.

Its like becoming a father at the age of 50. :misbah

Players in the 30s is not a big deal but 40? well I don't think so. It also shows that there's a dearth of good young players.

thats a good point ... but he has played fair amount of domestic cricket. i was even surprised he has more than 14000 runs in first class or list-A. impressive.

remember that imran was nearly 40 when he captained world cup 92 inspite of the fact he was a bowler .... misbah is just streching it another year. batsmen do not have to go through the stresses on joints, muscles, back which a bowler has to.

batting is not as easy as it looks. One could get severe pains in the arms just by doing holding the bat and doing net practise.

A mediocre captain. A good test player. Served Pakistan well. Hoping that he scores a 100 someday.
