Misbah-ul-Haq & Azhar Ali meet PCB management in the wake of their meeting with Imran Khan [Post#11]

Pakistan head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq, Test captain Azhar Ali and senior batsman Muhammad Hafeez have been summoned by the PCB in the wake of their meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan for restoring departmental teams in domestic cricket.

According to sources close to the players, Pakistan Cricket Board CEO Wasim Khan will meet with the three players on Monday to convey the board's displeasure and unhappiness over their move to approach Imran Khan and speak out against a policy decision.

Misbah, Azhar and Hafeez were called for a meeting by Imran Khan earlier this month after they requested for his time to discuss the problems being faced by cricketers around the country due to closure of departmental teams in domestic cricket.

Ironically PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani, CEO Wasim Khan were also present at the meeting in which Imran Khan rejected the concerns of Misbah and company, making it clear the new system of having just six provincial first class teams would continue and needed to be given time to bear results.

Mani and Wasim Khan were not happy with Misbah and the two other players going against a policy decision of the board in front of the Prime Minister and this will be conveyed to them on Monday.

But a well-informed source said that despite what is being portrayed publicly Misbah, Azhar and Hafeez had kept the board informed about their desire to meet the PM.

"The trio had time and again made it clear to the board officials they were not in favour of the scrapping of departmental teams in domestic cricket," the source said.

He said it was strange that contrary to this, the board was giving the impression that they were unaware that the three sought a meeting with the PM directly.

"How is it possible that the Prime Minister who is patron in chief of the board would agree to meet with Misbah and company without first the board being made aware of this and secondly how did the two senior PCB officials also attend the meeting?" the source questioned.

Dumb stuff by wasim. Misbah and co ddint go behind anyones back they met the patron in chief

Wasim Khan has categorically stated he was informed one day before the meeting. Therefore he was “informed”, but not kept in the loop. PCB has every right to ask them why they didn’t try to resolve the matter directly with the PCB.

Yup. In general he is upset the players didn't try to resolve the issue with them thoroughly and going behind their back by approaching the PM

Cannot imagine anything too drastic happening in this meeting.

Just wishing for the hammer to drop on misbah one day.
It is needed if Pakistan cricket has to move forward.

That's correct.

I asked Wasim and he said he was told about the meeting, the day before it was due to happen.

One can see why PCB is upset about all this.

Its not a big deal, but hopefully it sets a precedent, maybe one day our players past and present will be able to resolve issues amicably rather than go behind the back of managers or voice their toxic opinions on youtube etc.

Lahore: Pakistan men’s team head coach-cum-chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq and Test skipper Azhar Ali has justified their meet-up with Prime Minister Imran Khan, ARY News reported.

According to sources, both individuals met the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) high-ups on their uninformed meeting with PM Khan regarding the restoration of departmental cricket.

Misbah and Azhar clarified that they didn’t go against the policy of the PCB and only talked on behalf of players, who got unemployed after the shutdown of departmental cricket, however, the PCB has instructed them to stay careful next time.

It must be noted that last month, Azhar, Misbah and veteran batsman Mohammad Hafeez met PM Khan where they failed to convince the nation’s PM to resume departmental cricket in the country. PCB expressed their displeasure and was summoned this week.

This wouldn't have been an issue if Pakistan cricket wasn't regressing under Misbah and Azhar.

All 3 are toxic and need to be booted out but it is becoming more apparent that Misbah's appointment was a political one and that PCB doesn't have the power alone to get rid of Misbah unless they can get the green light from Imran Khan.

Defo without imran khan none of them.will get sacked or moved on

I mean it's obvious that Wasim Khan and the rest of the PCB are making a big deal out of this to get IK's attention, hoping he will give them the green light to call it quits for Misbah.

But it shouldn't be upto Imran khan it should be to the pcb to make these decisions

Misbah will embarass himself in new Zealand and with the amount of goodwill Mohammad wasim has created, i see him coming in as the replacement.

I hope so brother.

Misbah isn't going to get sacked before the 2021 World T20 lol. This is the PCB, they are slow to make such decisions.

Look at how long it took for them to get rid of best captain since IK and Misbah protage when he was ODI captain lol.

Agreed, add to the fact that he's now a dictator among PCB circles.

But he needs to go one way or another if Pak is going to improve.

We should hire Sri lankans to make those decisions :))

Yes he definitely needs to go as he can't even select the best 11 , never mind develop players and develop a strategy and tactics to win games consistently.

In that case, I'll be glad he won't be in the set-up come the 2023 World Cup.

I would not be shocked if he was coach in 2023. Think a lot will depend on what we do in the World T20 and rest of test championship.

That's a scary thought as it will be another guaranteed wasted half a decade.

Here is my understanding.

1. A top international coach has a going rate of around $1 million per year (England, Australia, India).

2. There are a group of experienced international coaches available for around $600,000 per year (Mickey Arthur being an example, also Mike Hesson and Trevor Bayliss and Tom Moody).

3. The Chief Selector role varies in pay overseas: in most countries there is no payment but expenses are reimbursed. In Australia there is a part-time National Selector role which is expected to watch significant amounts of domestic cricket during the summer but involves almost no work the other 7 months of the year. That role is paid A$75,000 (US$54,000).

4. The second tier countries like New Zealand and South Africa pay their coaches around $150,000 per year, which is significantly less than Asian countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which have to pay more to attract comparable candidates.

Misbah is paid $300,000 to combine the roles of Head Coach and Chief Selector. In effect, there is roughly a 90-10 split between the value of the Head Coach role ($270,000) and the Chief Selector ($30,000) one.

In normal circumstances, Misbah would have been given clear and separate performance targets for each role. I would have set him the following targets:

1. Average a minimum of 80 World Test Championship points across the 3 home series against Bangladesh, South Africa and Sri Lanka, with a combined minimum total of 240 points out of 360.
So far he has 140 points out of 180.
2. Average a minimum of 40 World Test Championship points across the 3 away series in Australia, England and New Zealand, with a combined minimum points total of 120 out of 360. So far he has 13 points out of 240.
3. Maintain a Top 2 T20i ranking.
4. Remain in the Top 5 ODI teams, as per the 2019 World Cup.

It is clear that Misbah's PERFORMANCE falls far short of these benchmarks. The problem is that his KPIs were not built in to his contract: it should be possible to terminate his contract without penalty right now after 12 months for failing to be on target to meet those rather low requirements.

So the PCB cannot afford to sack Misbah because they gave him a blank cheque as his contract, with no performance requirements.

I'm pretty sure that they will relieve him of the Chief Selector role, which carries no financial penalties for the PCB or Misbah, and which is easy to do because of the monumental incompetence of his selections. Taking 13 players aged over 30 in a 29 man squad to England is the most incompetent act of selection ever undertaken by a Pakistani, and surely cannot be left to stand without consequences.

Who knows PCB may award him another position and another couple of years of extension.
