Big hit: It's country ahead of IPL pay day for me, says Starc

Mitchell Starc has declared he would put national representation ahead of a lucrative Twenty20 pay day as a call for long-term Cricket Australia contracts gained support.

While former Australian batsman Dean Jones said playing for your country must be the priority, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Starc are likely to be among the country's best players who will need to decide whether taking part in the glamorous Indian Premier League from March is the best decision from a workload perspective ahead of the World Cup and an Ashes tour.

It's understood Starc has been told this week by the Kolkata Knight Riders, the IPL franchise which took him this year for $1.8 million, that he won't be redrafted, having missed last season because of injury. While the Australian spearhead is leaning towards bypassing next year's tournament, he could still yet enter next month's auction.

Confirmed injuries aside, players have called for a more balanced thinking towards their workload, believing the focus on sports science under Pat Howard, the high-performance chief who left on Wednesday, had become too great in terms of players requiring rest when they wanted to bowl.

One option raised is that players taken by IPL franchises be allowed to feature in the first half of the tournament, potentially beginning on March 23, ahead of the World Cup, beginning on May 30.

As revealed by Fairfax Media, Cummins and his manager Neil Maxwell have been pushing for a five-year CA contract. This security would allow Cummins to bypass the IPL and avoid the country-versus-club debate.

Jones, the former Test and one-day international batsman and now a leading Twenty 20 coach, suggested Cummins miss the IPL.

"Interesting view by Cummins' manager ... surely playing for Aust is a priority ... instead of turning up cooked for World Cup?" Jones posted on Twitter.

Cummins, Australia's top-ranked cricketer, also missed this year's IPL through injury while Hazlewood opted to not attend.

However, the workload and injury debate also impacts batsmen and all-rounders, including power hitter Chris Lynn, who continues to nurse a troublesome shoulder which prevents him from diving in the field. Lynn was the highest-paid Australian in the IPL last season, pocketing $1.86 million from the Knight Riders.

All CA-contracted players are on one-year deals, although some, including David Warner, were put on multi-year deals in 2015 when Indian conglomerate Essel Group threatened to establish a rival competition.

Starc, one of CA's highest-paid players, said there were players who would enjoy longer-term contracts.

"I'm sure it would for a lot of people - it's no different to working life outside the sporting field. When you look at some of the dollars involved in the IPL and some of the T20 leagues around the world, for guys who might be on the fringe or want to concentrate on T20 cricket, it's beneficial to play in those leagues," he said.

"At the moment, for me, I want to play as much Test and one-day cricket as I can for Australia. The IPL is a lovely bonus on the pay packet but if I miss that to play more Test matches, I am taking that option."

Former Australian fast bowler Damien Fleming said long-term CA deals were worth considering but only if players agreed to not take part in any Twenty20 tournaments outside of Australia.

"I think it is worth talking about. If they are going to forego other domestic Twenty20 comps. You can't have everything," he said.

"If your focus is going to be international cricket and Australian domestic cricket and maybe grade cricket, then I could live with it - probably more with fast bowlers because they are more of a premium. I certainly think it's worth a conversation."

CA can stop a player from participating in an overseas domestic tournament by issuing a notice of objection certificate but that would only be last resort for player managers believe it could be easily challenged and would have an impact on the relationship between headquarters and the Australian Cricketers Association.

lol, sour grapes for Starc.

He was probably hurt at the way his IPL contract was terminated by KKR, via a text message!

yes - amazing all this talk of country after losing contract

IPL just lost one of the greatest talents of this generation.

Enjoy the bowling of the Dindas and the dandas.

Didn't Australia say they didn't want Starc to play IPL before WC? Maybe they requested IPL for Starc's release. Starc won't mind if he's compensated.

Hasn't been missed in IPL for the last 3 seasons. Going by his statements, looks like he was using IPL as a bargaining chip to secure a long term CA contract. KKR saw through his plans and terminated the contract.

LOL, he has no alternative other than pretending to be happy.

Even if any other team would have picked him he is not going to play so i don't think it matters alot.

Just confirms that players play leagues for money, and international cricket is still the peak.

Aussie cricketers are well paid, Australia is a very rich nation and can afford to compensate bowlers from being mercenary to T20 leagues. For countries like WI it's different.

Well its good for him he gets injured too often for his own liking even without playing it.

IPL needs Starc more than he needs IPL, he is the top fastman in world today.

IPL needs Starc more than he needs IPL, he is the top fastman in world today.

IPL is now at a place and has grown to a size where it cares zilch about players missing. IPL's carved a place in people's routine during those two months. Even Virat could give IPL a miss without viewership being affected.

Starc to Miss IPL

Mitchell Starc says he would miss the IPL if it means he can play more tests.

"At the moment for me I just want to play as much Test and one-day cricket as I can, and the IPL is a lovely bonus on the pay packet, but if I miss that to play more Test matches, I'm taking that option."

Nice to finally see cricketers focusing on real cricket.

It should be noted that Starc is saying this after being dropped by KKR.

He isn't part of any IPL team currently. Which is not a surprise since he has missed the last 4 seasons due to injury.

And with a track record like that I don't think any team will pick him even if he wants to play IPL.

IPL needs Starc more than he needs IPL, he is the top fastman in world today.

Starc hasn't featured in the IPL in the last 4 years. In that time, IPL has become a multi-billion dollar event and at this point an IPL match is valued at INR 54.6 crore while an English Premiere League football match is valued at INR 41 crore. :afridi

IPL doesn't need Starc. Starc needs IPL.

For Indians, no there was never a doubt.

For Indians...its ICC events then IPL then bilaterals. IPL is not just a league but an emotion which is watched by millions of people in the country from the remotest of villages to big towns. People from rural areas can relate to a rivalry between Chennai and Bangalore more that say India playing against NZ somewhere in Napier. The viewership of IPL over the years have over shadowed every bilaterals so far.

Starc is an IPL reject and him missing out makes no difference. Infact, if 10 top players misses out from IPL tomorrow, still it will not have an impact because its an emotion and people will tune in large numbers irrespective of who plays.

Its pretty similar to EPL where people can relate to Man U against city or Tottenham vs Chelsea more that some normal rubbish internationals. Same goes for AFL or NBA etc. But I know Pak never had any league of such quality so its tough for you to understand. International cricket is by all and end all is a 10 year old concept.

This should be pretty much the end of IPL career for Starc. IPL franchises demand total loyalty and I'll be very surprised if Starc attracts bids even if he registers for auctions for 2019 seadon or beyond.

You're getting it confused because most of the viewership for the IPL is India and UK and a few other countries. The Premier league matches are a worldwide event each time so although they're valued at less please don't ever compare an IPL match to an EPL match.

Please see how.and when he said this, his contract was terminated and he was playing games.

For many in India it is. Considering India's size and diversity, it has many parallels with the Euro Football tournament.

So the best fast bowler of the greatest cricketing nation just turned down the IPL to play some test cricket. Is he mad?

Anyone that follows cricket news ,would see how Starc is trying to spin this but yes Country should be considered over IPL but again player's choice.

Starc is brittle. Gets injured very often. Better for him to skip IPL and stay healthy for WC.

Well obviously EPL is viewed in more countries than IPL. EPL is viewed in more countries than even ICC World Cups.

That's just the difference between football and cricket. The former is a far more global sport. That has nothing to do with the IPL.

But the only reason broadcasting rights for a televised event would be higher than another is because the headcount of viewers is (or expected to be) higher. There is no other reason why a broadcaster would pay more. All they are looking for is how much money they can make by selling advertising space. And clearly Star believes that they can sell advertising time for IPL at a more premium rate than EPL.

You got it backwards. Starc didn't leave KKR. KKR dropped Starc.

And he hasn't even said that he won't play IPL. He said that if he isn't picked up by another franchise then he wouldn't mind because he'll get rest for the WC and Ashes. So he still wants to play. But does IPL want him anymore? Given his track record with injuries, I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't picked up by anyone.

I’m sorry t20 league pacers are trash. He was one of the very elite ones. Any league including ipl would take him.

Its an insult that such a good bowler is dropped and informed through a text while as useless bowlers like Unadkat,Kaul,Mohit, earn crores.

I am sensing destruction of Indian batting on their upcoming tour with 2 ,3 players undergoing MRI scan

That's the million dollar word right there. :)

He wasn't part of the IPL during past few seasons, so he won't get missed in the upcoming season. More often he remains injured, so its better for him to make sure he remains fit for the upcoming WC.

The IPL has grown so large that missing a few top cricketers is not going to make any difference. I think it has surpassed bilaterals in India. The recent IPL broadcast deal is clear evidence on which direction the fans are heading.

I think the fans have turned their focus on the teams they support rather than just the stars playing. I am sure rivalries have been formed based on teams/cities. The IPL has been on for 12 years. So good amount of history and time for people to develop a following for a team.

The 8-12 year old kids (an age when most get into sports) in 2008 are now in their teens and twenties. They do not know a cricket world without IPL. I am sure when they start making their own money, a good chunk of their sports $$ budget will go towards IPL.

Similarly the twenty somethings in 2008 are likely now parents and are teaching their children about cricket and IPL would likely be a prominent feature. This is likely because they had a good time in their single days and are hooked on to IPL. Also I am sure they are spending their sports $$ on IPL as well.

The advertisers have already seen this and have bet big on the IPL. In fact, its so big that it is now larger cash cow than any ICC tournament.

His injuries played a part in him not being retained. Australian players will always choose country over money. No surprise here. Hazelwood also doesn't make himself for the IPL. Clarke didn't play in the IPL other than 1 season.

Starc needs to rest his body for some period in the year.

EPL is one of many football leagues around the world. It is not as if it dominates European club championships. Arguably the Spanish league is better. IPL on the other hand is head and shoulders over other leagues.

IPL needs Starc more than he needs IPL, he is the top fastman in world today.

Nope. He was a leading bowler during 2015 World cup. But his brand value has gone down in the recent times after the emergence of other fast bowlers and also a couple of Indian bowlers. KKR don't need his service as they already have Mavi, Prasidh and Nagarkoti. They just need to groom these young bowlers.

And these young Indian Pacers will come at less than half the price demanded by Starc.

I still can't believe no Pakistani player is picked in this league, cracks me up at the audacity to be so blatantly discriminatory.

Media Release:

Cricket Australia today announced its position on Australian players participating in the 2019 Indian Premier League.

Players who intend to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) require approval from Cricket Australia (CA) in the form of a No Objection Certificate (NOC).

CA is committed to providing NOCs to players after the last round of Sheffield Shield (20-23 March 2019) provided they are not participating in the final. Those participating in the Sheffield Shield final (28 March – 1 April) will not be released until its conclusion.

Players who are participating in the One Day International series versus Pakistan will not be released until its conclusion (dates subject to confirmation by the Pakistan Cricket Board).

Players who are released to play in the IPL will be expected to be available for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 and the 2019 Ashes series, if selected.

Final selection of the World Cup squad will be provided to the ICC on 23rd April, and announced publicly thereafter. All 15 players selected will be expected to attend a mandatory training camp in early May and practice matches ahead of the World Cup.

Cricket Australia’s Interim EGM Team Performance, Belinda Clark said:

“In the interest of making Australians proud of our team, we are working hard to ensure their health and match readiness ahead of what will undoubtedly be a huge year in cricket, while respecting the players’ interests in playing in the various formats.

“It is a difficult period with the IPL being brought forward to accommodate the Cricket World Cup, and overlapping our domestic season. We are committed to respecting the position of the Sheffield Shield, while ensuring Australia’s World Cup squad is well prepared for this critical world event, while also ensuring those that are fit to play have opportunity to participate in the IPL.

“While this is no easy feat, I think we have managed a reasonable balance that will enable the players to consider their options and choose what is right for them and their respective teams.

“We will, as always, assess applications on a case by case basis but it is important the players understand our position in advance, so they have the clarity they need to make personal decisions.

“It is imperative that we ensure Australia is in the best possible position as we head into the Cricket World Cup and the 2019 Ashes series. This means prioritising our focus on match readiness and the health of our players” said Clark.

Registration details for the IPL auction will be shared by BCCI with all CA contracted players and State contracted players from today.

The very fact that there is a separate/special press release addressing the IPL shows how big this league has grown. That too from CA one of the Big3.

The content of the press release though reeks of walking on egg shells. Trying hard to please all.

BCCI is interested, but Indian government doesn't. At the end of the end, the government controls bilateral diplomatic relations, be it sports or politics. It's still very shallow and shameful by all means.

The government has no reason to intervene in sporting situations unless the player is suspected of criminal acts or associations. Really immature on their part

lol, sour grapes for Starc.

He was probably hurt at the way his IPL contract was terminated by KKR, via a text message!

Indian batsmen better watch out in the upcoming series at the end of the year. Starc will be super motivated.

IPL Auction 2020: Mitchell Starc opts out yet again

Mitchell Starc has removed his name from the auctions of IPL 2020, he mentioned the reason that he wants to focus more on red ball cricket and wants to be fit for his country.

In the 2018 IPL auction, Starc was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders. However, he could not play for the Kolkata based franchise as he was sidelined from the entire tournament with injury.

Starc last featured in the league in 2015, when he represented Royal Challengers Bangalore.

I’m a bit confused about this, does he put his name everytime and then take it out at the end moment, to make it news?

I would say this is the PCB effect. They come to Australia and subsequently prise him away from the IPL :P

Before praising him, is he going to be reimbursed by Cricket Australia or some other party?

I wonder why doesn't the IPL blacklist him from the auction for pulling of stuff like this?

The excuse the Franchise owners gave for never signing Pakistani players when they were in peak form was that the political climate was too uncertain and they will tolerate any uncertainty over player availability. What do they have to say about episodes like this? I think it will be tremendous hypocrisy on their part if they pick Starc again next season.

But i understand the obvious anti Pakistan sentiment in India, they would rather pay anyone else but a Pakistani player.

Think its a good decision. Starc is young and in super form. He must preserve his skills and endurance for international cricket. He will get a lot of time to play IPL after his peak years.

This attitude of Starc is what makes him a champion and seperates him from a greedy person like Amir. Talent wise both are equal but Starc used it wisely for his country and Amir left Pakistab hanging midway chasing dollars.

I’m a bit confused about this, does he put his name everytime and then take it out at the end moment, to make it news?

Lol I was thinking the same, either Starc is doing it on purpose or his agent is a troll.

His contract was terminated by kkr last year and that too just by texting him Thats has apparently hurt his ego.

There is little chance of any team buying him as he has not played ipl due to injuries etc since 2016.

LOL. Good riddance. It's ok if he wants to opt out of IPL but why does he give his name and then say opting out in last minute? Does he get visibility in CA for these antics?

Cricket Australia wants Starc to rest he has a few niggles, they even told Cummins to rest and miss the IPL but Cummins decided he wanted to play.

It is clear IPL apologists are the ones hurt here. Maybe in India money is everything, but in the real world, money is not the be all and end all. Snubbing money is a new concept in India. Better get used to it.

Bro he is the top paid cricketer in oz and his salary alone is close to 2 millions.its a free market. Amir would be willing to sell his limbs to play in ipl.he is already trying the uk citizenship route

Starc’s priorities have been apparent for the past five or so years.

1. Test cricket
2. 50 over World Cup
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
3. everything else

The IPL is massively lucrative for a man who has been the best white ball bowler of this decade. The fact he chooses to prioritise his international career over a big payday in a T20 league is something to be commended, not mocked.

Dude, it's ok he can play wherever he wants. Why can't he say i do not want to play upfront, every year just before auctions he pulls out, he can say i will never play IPL till i am 35 or retired right!

Sold his country for far less.

He has missed last 3 seasons of ipl and his contract was terminated by KKR. Why the sour grapes, will that make your league and your team better?

This thread has shown how some people are still bitter about ipl and suffer from sour grapes syndrome. Starc has missed 3 ipls and was fired by his franchise. So of course he is reluctant

Dont. worry, your league is also doing very well

He was still in demand, he would not have gone unsold in the auction but perhaps his price would have taken a hit

I doubt he's in demand, IPL in 2020 is a lot more serious than 2008, Starc is unreliable and not worth the money (whatever his worth is).

He chose Hundred over ipl.
Hundreds will be of superior quality than ipl. So playing in hundred will provide him better prepration for world t20 cup.

Hope hundreds is a success and of superior quality. Its high time some league finally gives competition to the mighty IPL. Those cheap IPL imitations like PSL, BPL, SLPL etc failed spectacularly and hilariously in giving competition the daddy league.

Lets go Hundreds :)

Meanwhile we have cricketers who would rather play in T20 leagues than for their country.
