Senior Indian woman cricketer and ODI captain Mithali Raj Tuesday lashed out at Committee of Administrators’ member Diana Edulji and coach Ramesh Powar, saying a “few people in power are out to destroy me”.

READ FULL LETTER BELOW:

Dear Rahul Sir and Saba,

Warm greetings!

First of all I would like to thank you both for lending me an ear to hear my grievances. In all the years I have played cricket for India and under the BCCI, I have always found the board to be open to player grievances and finding an appropriate resolution.

However, for the first time in a 20 year long career I felt deflated, depressed and let down. I am forced to think if my services to my country are of any value to a few people in power who are out to destroy me and break my confidence.

To put things in perspective, I have always reposed faith in diana Edulji and have always respected her and her position as a member of the COA, Never did I think she will use her position against me, more after hearing what all I had to go through in the Caribbean as I had spoken to her about it . Her brazen support in the press with regard to the decision of my benching in the semi final of the t/20 World Cup has left me deeply distressed, more because she knows the real facts having spoken to me. Thereafter her statement saying ‘selection is not the COA’s headache’ is like suggesting there is no system of cheques and balances and anyone can do anything and get away because they have the backing of people in power.

May I say that I am aware that by writing this email I am making myself even more vulnerable. she is a COA member while I am just a player. For the record, I scored back to back fifties in the games before the semi final, was adjudged player of the match on both occasions, to leave me out in the semi final and go with only three performing batters was a decision that left me baffled as much as it left the whole world.

I have always adhered to protocol and haven’t said a word in the press regarding anything that happened in the West Indies believing that the BCCI is there and in the end ‘my truth ‘ will have an ear there and my matter will be handled justly. But the brazen support of a COA member is a clear sign of bias and also that a stance has already been taken against me. By saying ‘I don’t support someone’ and then going all out to support my benching in the press is prejudice of the clearest sort.

At this juncture I would also like to point out that I have nothing against the T/20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur except for the fact that her call to support the decision of the coach to leave me out of the eleven was baffling and hurtful. I wanted to win the world cup for my country and it hurts me because we lost a golden opportunity. But I am of the opinion that Harman and I are senior players and our issues, if any, should be sorted out by the two of us by sitting across the table. As India’s 50 over captain, I value Harman as one of our best players and will always want to ensure that the two of us perform our best for India. Having said that, my issue is deeper. My issue is with the coach Ramesh Powar and in all stories circulating in the press, I find that issue getting diluted.

My issues with the coach started immediately as we landed in the West Indies. At first there were small signs that his behaviour towards me was unfair and discriminatory but I did not bother much about it. Right from the Sri Lanka tour to Australia A matches I opened the innings and in the World Cup warm up games too I had done the same. One day before the game after I came out of the nets, he walked up to me and informed me that he wanted me to bat in the middle order as we needed depth in the middle order against New Zealand. Not having played middle order in recent times and without practice still , I agreed for the greater cause of the team. For me team comes ahead of anything. After the game it was evident that the opening did not work as the team was 3/38 after power-play and yet in the team meeting the next day he informed me that we are going with the same opening pair as against New Zealand. And he also praised the openers despite them not succeeding.

This left me completely shocked as against Pakistan there was no requirement of strengthening the middle order and also I have a great record against them. This was a match we had to win. I immediately reached out to the selectors and upon their intervention, he told me just before the game at breakfast that I was opening. I performed well in the game and we cruised to victory. But instead of saying any words of encouragement it appeared he was out there to prove a point and from there on his behaviour changed dramatically towards me and really caused a lot of stress in the middle of one of the most important tournaments for us.

For instance, walking off if I am sitting anywhere around, watching in the nets when others bat but choosing to walk away when I am batting in nets, if I try to go up to him to talk to start looking into his phone and keep walking. It was embarrassing and very evident to everyone that I was being humiliated. Yet I never lost my cool. Finding the situation completely out of control and realising that it is important to resolve issues as it affects the team I reached out to the team manager and conveyed my grievances. She convened a meeting at my request between the coach and me in her presence and I spoke to him politely yet firmly about all that was going on. In front of the manager at numerous instances he agreed to his fault ‘ haan Meri Galti hai, ‘Mujhe Aisa Nahin karna chahiye tha’. I also offered for the team cause that if he wants to send youngsters to open to try them it would be best if he can try them against Ireland as they were the minnows to which he said no you will open against them. I hoped this would be the end of the differences between us but clearly I was wrong.

After the meeting his behaviour turned worse. He would not even acknowledge me. To him I didn’t exist in the team. If I was around he would immediately move away from the scene, if I looked to wish him he would deliberately start looking in other direction. He continued to behave badly as I have already informed you yesterday. It appeared to me that for him the meeting had hurt his ego. In the game against Ireland also on a tough pitch I scored another match winning performance but unfortunately took a bump on my knee while fielding. The physio advised some rest and said to review it the next day. Because of all the stress I was running low grade fever also. We had no game the next day but there was a training session. The physio advised me to rest it out as there was slight swelling and because I had fever. In the evening after the team meeting before the Australia game, Ramesh rings up in my room and instructs me not to come to the ground as the media will be there. I was taken aback as to what media has to do with me being with the team. I was told I was not to be with my own team in one of our biggest games. I was shell shocked. I spoke to the manager immediately and told her that I am not seriously injured and only seriously sick and that I want to come and watch my team play. She agreed and told me to come. But I received a text from Ramesh in a few minutes after my conversation with the manager wherein he told me not to step out of the dressing room. I found it strange why is he getting involved when it was purely the managers’ and physio’s call.when we won the Australia game Ramesh sent a word across with a team mate to call me down to the dugout so that I can join the team for a victory lap. It was strange because right through the match I had been put under house arrest and was never allowed to leave the dressing room.

When we reached Antigua for the semi-finals, we had 3 days before we played England. The first day there was no nets, it was just a fielding session, but Ramesh was taking 5 girls for extra practise. When I heard this from one of the girls I thought that since I did not bat for 2 days, I should also join them for practice. So, I texted Ramesh that I would like to join for the extra training. However, I did not receive any response from him and hence I reached out to the manager. She got back to me saying Ramesh wants you to come with the whole team later and skip the game, so I can bat..I went into the nets and as soon I got into the nets, Ramesh just walked away from the area. The sign was clear that he had already made up his mind that he didn’t want to play me in the semis. The next day he paired me up with Deepti, second last pair in nets wherein I had to play part time bowlers and sometimes I just had 3 bowlers in the nets. It was not even middle order, it was lower middle order where I was batting, the kind of practice given to a player who is not in your scheme of things in a key match. All this made me believe that he didn’t want me in the team and will oust me despite performing. Coming to the semi finals, usually Ramesh announces the team a day before or on the day of the game before we enter the ground but it was unusual that on the day of the semis, he did not announce the team. It is when Harman walked to toss, he came running to me and said that they were going with the same team. It meant the whole team knew who were playing and it was just me who was not aware. Also, when the team was getting ready to field in the second innings, it is customary that even those who aren’t playing should join the team huddle as it has always been the norm in our team. But to insult me that day, he sent a word through the manager to tell that it was only the playing eleven that can join in the huddle and the rest can go back to dugout making us feel as outcasts. It was worrying and insulting because the coach was out to destroy and humiliate me.

I couldn’t control my tears having given it my all for 20 years. It seemed my efforts had no value.

After the Australia game, which we won, Ramesh sent a word across with a teammate to call me down to the dugout so that I can join the team for a victory lap. It was strange because right through the match I had been put under house arrest and was never allowed to leave the dressing room.

In the light of the above, I as captain of India in ODI’s who has given her best for the country, do I have any hope left to be given justice. With Diana turning against me publicly and with the coach’s unjust behaviour ,I feel utterly dejected and depressed. As I was told not to go to the media I write this email to you as the last resort. Please advise against the next course of action.

Regards

Mithali

What a crybaby this lady Mithali is! Always thought she was overrated with her painstakingly slow and selfish batting! Has always been a total misfit in T20 team.

This entitlement attitude is really a plague in sub-continental teams.

Absolutely. It's been made out as if had she been there the team would have surely won.

This.

Should consider herself fortunate to have played so many games for India with the kind of ability she had. What a boring batswoman she is!

Whats worst is that she has just bagged an endorsement deal! I mean I can understand Harmanpreet and Smriti Mandhana bagging such deals, they fully deserve all the riches that comes their way, but Mithali? Seriously whats wrong with the sponsors that they're trying to encash a never been's appeal amongst Indian people?

Stop posting nonsense on this thread and stick to topic

Really? You have this to say about the best ever LOI batswoman from India and amongst the top 5 in Women's cricket history?

May be harsh but she is past it for long now and is just accumulating numbers nowadays.

May be harsh but she is past it for long now and is just accumulating numbers nowadays.

Mithali Raj 2017 WC - 409 runs @ 45.5 2nd highest scorer of the tournament

Numbers in ODIs in last 12 months - avg of 45 (2nd highest after Mandhana); SR of 62 (1 more than the SR of Kaur); Mithali and Mandhana are the only 2 Indians to have scored a century in the last 12 months

Numbers in T20Is in the last 12 months - 3rd highest run scorer for India with a highest score of 97*; 2nd highest avg of 36; 7 t20i 50s (2 more than the next highest)

Don't understand what people try to prove by talking about things they cleary have zero knowledge of. Probably didn't even watch a single ball of the T20WC.

Empty vessels make more noise. :shh :shh :shh

Thinking again about his comments about Mithali's exclusion, I'm astonished at his sense of entitlement. Greg Chapell might have been wrong about a lot of things in Indian cricket but he was totally right about giving Ganguly the boot in '05.

So did Diana instruct Indian team management not to induct Mithali for SF? Diana might be good for nothing but don't think she had any hand in this decision.

You would be surprised to know how many decisions are due to her hand.

Sunil Gavaskar said he empathised with Mithali Raj who was left out of India's playing XI against England in the semi-final of the Women's World T20.

The decision to omit India's highest scorer in women's T20 Internationals created a furor even after skipper Harmanpreet Kaur justified the decision and said she had no regrets after India lost to England by eight wickets in Antigua last week.

Hours after the semi-final, Mithali's manager lashed out at Harmanpreet Kaur in a tweet which was later deleted. "Unfortunately bcciWomen believes in politics not sport. After witnessing what @M_Raj03 's experience could do in IndvIre it's shocking that they went with what pleases @ImHarmanpreet -a manipulative, lying, immature, undeserving captain," Annisha Gupta had tweeted.

Gavaskar said he did not agree with the team management reason to drop Mithali from the team for a knockout game.

"I feel sorry for Mithali. She has a very good point.. She has served Indian cricket for 20 years. She scored runs.. she won player of the match in both matches (she played at the World T20)," Gavaskar told India Today.

"She was injured for one game but fit for the next game. Just convert this situation into the men's game. If you had a Virat Kohli who was injured for one game and then is fit for the knockout, will you leave him out? You have to pick your best player for the knockouts.. You needed the experience and expertise of Mithali Raj," Gavaskar said.

Even as reports of a rift in the dressing-room began to emerge, Mithali and Harmanpreet met with BCCI CEO Rahul Johri after returning to India.

Soon after, Mithali wrote a letter to BCCI accusing coach Ramesh Powar of humiliating her. Mithali said realised she would not play the semi-final only moments before the toss.

"It is when Harman walked to toss, he came running to me and said that they were going with the same team. It meant the whole team knew who were playing and it was just me who was not aware. Also, when the team was getting ready to field in the second innings, it is customary that even those who aren't playing should join the team huddle as it has always been the norm in our team. It was worrying and insulting because the coach was out to destroy and humiliate me," Mithali wrote in her letter to BCCI. "I couldn't control my tears having given it my all for 20 years. It seemed my efforts had no value."

Gavaskar said it was difficult to comment on Powar's role from a distance but said he did not agree with the Indian team's reason behind Mithali's omission.

"What happened with Powar.. is very difficult to comment on that from here. It's difficult to accept whatever the reason was.. They said they wanted to stick with the same team, I don't think that's a good enough excuse. You can't drop someone like Mithali Raj," he said.

I do think there is some foul play here though in the women's selection.

Look I believe Mithali should have played on merit as she is still a better batswoman than the rest of the players except Mandana and Harman. Powar and that Diana lady are also to take blame for this but tbh Mithali just sounds very entitled in that letter to COA, the whole letter just has a very "Oh I've done so much for the country how could they drop me!" undertone to it.

Mithali Raj packed her bags and threatened to quit, reveals Ramesh Powar

Indian women's team coach Ramesh Powar on Wednesday met BCCI CEO Rahul Johri and GM (Cricket Operations) Saba Karim and accused Mithali Raj of blackmailing and pressurising Team India coaches.

Mithali was not selected in the playing XI of the Indian team for the World T20 semi-final against England last week.

The decision to omit India's leading run-scorer in women's T20 Internationals created a furor even after skipper Harmanpreet Kaur justified the decision and said she had no regrets after India lost to England by eight wickets in Antigua.

On her return to India, Mithali wrote a scathing letter to the BCCI and accused Powar of bias.

Powar countered every charge levelled against him by Mithali and made some startling revelations about the senior most player in the women's cricket team.

"Mithali Raj - a senior player in the team. Minimum inputs in team meetings not a single word of appreciation after finishing at the top of the table," Powar said in the meeting at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Wednesday.

"Before Pakistan match video analyst Mr Pushkar Sawant came to my room with the news that fielding coach Mr Biju George conveyed to him that Mithali is upset about not changing the batting order & not allowing her to open in Pakistan match. She has packed her bags to leave with announcement of retirement in the morning. I was shell shocked to understand why? Team had just beaten one of the top teams (New Zealand) and Mithali Raj a legend is still complaining about her batting position (which she agreed upon) & threatening to leave. (instead, should be happy with the positive start of World Cup campaign of Team India)."

"I was sadden and baffled by her attitude. It gave me a impression that for Mithali Raj she comes first and then team India. I called team manager early in the morning and discussed the issue. I did not convey this to captain and vice captain as I don't wanted them to lose their focus of most important match, India vs Pakistan of the group stages. During breakfast on match day I told Harman & Smriti that we will open with Mithali and they agreed. Conveyed Mithali also about her opening the innings against Pakistan," Powar said.

In her letter, Mithali had also accused Committee of Administrators member Diana Edulji of bias. The ODI captain stated that Edulji used her position against her and made her feel vulnerable.

The 40-year-old Powar's interim tenure comes to an end on Friday.

Even though he will be free to apply for the post when fresh applications are invited, he is unlikely to be retained as his player management skills have come under scanner due to this incident.

Here's what Ramesh Powar told the BCCI committee:

Mithali Raj - a senior player in the team. Minimum inputs in team meetings not a single word of appreciation after finishing at the top of the table.

Could not understand & adapt to team plan. Ignored her role and batted for own milestones. Lack of keeping the momentum going which was putting extra pressure on other batters. Worked really hard as a coach to address her power hitting, batting skills and running between the wickets in almost every session.

In practice games she was struggling to score quickly, as wickets were low bounce & slow. Intent was missing. Could not lean and execute shots due to limited ability in skills & fitness.

We wanted to make most of powerplay as powerplay was most important phase of the match (considering slow pitches) to score big with hard ball & it was challenge to score against spinners.

It was conveyed to her logically that she will be batting in middle order & she agreed too. (Before New Zealand match)

Mithali's lack of intent to score quickly in practice games prompted us to open with Taniya Bhatiya (in first league game vs New Zealand) who always shown intent every time she batted. We used Taniya and Hemlatha in powerplay vs New Zealand which got us 24 runs in 13 balls. It's not always about individual milestones, it's always about team strategies and executions. (team first)

After New Zealand game we had a practice session where Mithali was showing anger and attitude, which was disappointing.

In selection meeting where we picked 11 for Pakistan match, instead of appreciating effort of the team against New Zealand selector asked us why Mithali is not opening where I gave the explanation of making most of powerplay and if needed Mithali can bat in middle/lower order. On which selector said that she can only open or can't figure in the team. We as team management convinced her that she is a key player and we will use her experience as and when needed. Lot of young players look at her as role model and dropping her will hamper team environment.

Before Pakistan match video analyst Mr Pushkar Sawant came to my room with the news that fielding coach Mr Biju George conveyed to him that Mithali is upset about not changing the batting order & not allowing her to open in Pakistan match. She has packed her bags to leave with announcement of retirement in the morning. I was shell shocked to understand why? Team had just beaten one of the top teams (New Zealand) and Mithali Raj a legend is still complaining about her batting position (which she agreed upon) & threatening to leave. (instead, should be happy with the positive start of World Cup campaign of Team India)

I was sadden and baffled by her attitude. Conveyed Mithali also about her opening the innings against Pakistan.

Against Pakistan, to save the positive team environment, we opened with Mithali Raj due to pressure from travelling selector and Mithali's threatening behaviour (retirement) to go back home if not given a chance to open the innings.

Against Pakistan ,chasing 134 with 10 runs headstart 6 overs we were 48 for no loss. From 6th over till 15th over Mithali played 24 balls and scored only 25 runs (no intent to score fast) which hurt us in net run rate. Whole team specially batting unit was confused & angry as what she was trying to achieve by scoring fifty and not sticking to team plan. (dominance)

After Pakistan game she was moving around with an attitude. Making her own group with selected few players sitting away from the team. As a head coach I was very disappointed & saddened to see legend like her dividing a team in two groups.

After Pakistan match, Mithali asked for a meeting with me through team manager Trupthy Bhattacharya which I obliged. She conveyed that she is not very good player for this format compare to one day format where i convinced her that she is most experience player in the team and can adapt easily as she had scored a good hundred vs Sri Lanka, batting in the middle order in ODI series. (which reminded me she (captain) did not take the field for first 11 0vers due to fatigue after batting & we lost the match as all bowling plans were known to her which she did not share with vice captain Harmanpreet due to her sour relationship). She agreed to bat in middle order after hearing team plan from me.

Still we wanted her to give one more opportunity to prove her ability as opening batter vs Ireland to execute the teams strategies that is to bat with intent (dominance) but against weak Ireland bowling attack she scored run a ball 50 (56 balls 51 runs) and played 25 dots which added extra pressure & cost us Smriti, Jemimah's wicket & net run rate.

She again questioned batting plan of dominance after the match.

After Ireland game, as a senior player shown no interest to consult with team management to play or rest in very important game vs Australia.

Physio informed us that she is not available for selection due to mild fever &minor injury to knee, which she got recovered in one day (quite strange).

As a coach I asked her to take rest in hotel so she can get better & recover quickly but she did not listen and came to the ground for Australia match, which was surprising.

As we finished last league match in Guyana we called team members including support staff on to the ground to thank & appreciate Indian people, who were in attendance. Mithali was reluctant to come down.

After reaching Antigua for semifinals I had created 2 groups for low intensity practice session with 1st group consisting 5 players for batting skills specifics and another group for warm up, team game &fielding.

Mithali was in 2nd group but she wanted to come with us in first group. I requested her to come with 2nd group do warm up and skip the team game and come for the batting skills with practice bowlers as everyone was involved in team game. (she was supposed to do fielding with team after batting which she did not) i stayed and watched her bat for 10 mins and went in the ground to check how is session going inside the stadium. Mr Vikas Pandit was there to supervise her session. I came back with physio to watch her bat again. After finishing batting in net physio and me asked how she is feeling as it was her first net session after a break. She responded with nod as if our question does not matter to her.

A day before semifinal as I walked towards breakfast area, team manager Mrs. Trupthy Bhattacharya wanted to speak with me, which I obliged. she looked very tense.

As per team manager's words, she received abusive and threatening call from a person called Nusheen (former player)stating that what you were doing with Mithali as she cried whole night and her mother is worried Nusheen also threatened that you all will face consequences.

Out of panic team manager took physio to her room to check on her .as described by team manager Mithali wanted to go back home as she was very upset that coach is not looking after a legend player like her.

She threw lot of tantrums and created chaos. Team manager and physio tried their best to calm her.

Once hearing all this from Mithali, team manager came to me and described the whole episode, we immediately called Mr Saba Karim (gm , cricket operations, BCCI) and informed the matter. Saba sir told us to sort the matter out amicably. Saba sir also told us to concentrate on crucial and important world cup semi final match.

With in some time Mithali Raj shot a message on team manager's phone that she does not want to speak with coach.

Her irresponsible behaviour took my time away as i was suppose to speak with few players regarding preparations of all important semi final match, which could not happen.

As I needed to prepare team meeting notes, I took a leave.

Mr Biju George (fielding coach) gave feedback that Mithali Raj was not interested in fielding drills with intensity which is hampering intensity and rhythm of the fielding session. He tried to convince her every time but she did not improve. In matches she could not field outside circle or at any important positions due to poor agility and limited fielding skills.

I hope Mithali Raj stops blackmailing, pressurising coaches & also stops putting her interest first than team's .

I hope she will look at the bigger picture & work towards betterment of the Indian women's cricket.

Semi final playing eleven - as a team management we wanted to see how the pitch is playing in the first semi final as it was a fresh pitch which delayed our selection meeting. On completion of first semi final we all concerns people had selection meeting and decided to go with winning combination which had beaten strong team like Australia. Pitch was helping spinners & Anuja Patil, a spinner played a big role in match against Australia. Team was announced before the toss.

The last bit is sadly true, she should had waited till retirement to say something like that.

All consuming matter this, needs to be resolved asap

Have to agree with powar here, you might bat well but if you end up eating up balls in t20 without scoring quickly you are a liability and can't blame the coach for saying if you won't play where I tell you to, I won't play you. Another self entitled Indian sportsman, funny part is until the new generation came around literally no one outside serious women's cricket fans had even heard her name.

Basically another I played 20 years how dare you drop me defense. You are old lady and seem useless at t20 get over it.

It was Raj’s manager who started this public mud fight. Everyone should have just kept quiet to begin with.

That's a lot more embarrasing for you than it is for Mithali Raj.

Why is that? She and her team never achieved anything for people to take notice of their existence, why should that be embarrassing for me?

Because Mithali Raj is a legendary figure in women's cricket. You not knowing of her has more to do with your ignorance of the sport than Mithali Raj's achievements in her career.

Literally most of India is ignorant of her, people know who saina nehwal, sania Mirza are I would say someone like a Dipa Karmakar is more well known than Mithali Raj, if you win something, people give you coverage, with such comes recognition. Being a legend means little in a virtually unknown sport.

Not dissing on her, she might have been a great player before, but she isn't now. Powar kind of proves that, I think I read a scroll article that also came to the same conclusion as powar, that she ain't an opener for India in t20. What's your opinion on the controversy?

Being a legend means little in a virtually unknown sport.

Agree with the most of the things you have posted

I think even BCCI doesn't consider her a legend that's why they never send her name for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award,it means a lot for any sportsperson in India

Most of friends I have among Those who follow women's cricket were happy at her exclusion against Aussie side and the decision to not sent her to bat against NZ
We would have never won if she had opened the innings where she would have scored run a ball 30-40 something sucking up all the momentum

And until last year's World Cup not many knew her
Even there it was Smriti's knock against Eng in the opener and Harman's knock against Aussies in the semifinal caught the limelight
Fans trust Smriti & Harman more against top sides even though not consistent as her but have the ability to play destructive knocks whereas Mithali Raj is just Female version of Jonathan Trott who scored but creates no impact

Mithali is just creating just a bigger hole for herself with all these 'darkest day' tweets. Should've retired, with dignity. Extremely childish of her to publicly question team management.

Sad to see both SGs too blowing her trumpet. SG-II, I can understand but SG-I who is quite used to lecture all and sundry about discipline, wearing team cap properly and what not?

By all accounts Powar was a good coach and everyone else praised his role in making this team a competitive unit.

Now due to Mitahli's outbursts, he won't get extension to his coaching contract. Sad but Mithali will be known for this sorry episode at fag end of her career rather than her earlier 'exploits'.

So Powar was working directly on the orders of Diana Edulji. Both the coach and this unaccountable CoA member Edulji should be sacked immediately.

Mithali Raj is very average and a strokeless wonder but she was like Bradman in an era of atrocious Indian batsmen, but with the emergence of Mandhana, Kaur and Rodriguez recently, tables have turned and she is made to look the average player that she really is. I can understand why she still wants to play as BCCI just started giving contracts to women cricketers, so she would want to earn as much as possible at the fag end of her career to make up for 20 years of cricket earning zilch. More importantly, she is still the 'Bradman' when compared to other women pretenders in the team(bar Mandana/Kaur/Rodriguez, of course).

Refer to my earlier post which has her stats. She is still one of the best in the world.

Knowing how political and convoluted the BCCI is I am a 100% sure that everyone involved is culpable, especially Diana Edulji.

Powar was appointed 2 months before the T20WC and his tenure was only till the tournament ends and you have already come to the conclusion that he is a good coach "by all accounts".

Who are these accounts? Cite past achievements. Or even current ones.

How about making semis for the first time since 2010. 2 months isn't enough to judge how good or bad he is as a coach but his performance can't really merit sacking can it? What is telling is clear lack of support from her teammates for raj, I understand no one wanting to stick up for a coach who you know only for 2 months, but no fellow teammate sticking up for Raj is very intriguing.

That has nothing to do with the coach. The core of this team is the same one that was runner up in the 50 over WC last year. So it's not like Powar had to build any team.

Having said that I'm not saying that Powar should be sacked or that he is behind all this. Clearly not. A 2 month old coach will not have the power to make such decisions unilaterally. This problem goes right to the top.

As for why no player has spoken up yet - it's very obvious why - this issue has gone up straight to the BCCI CEO & the CoA. No player would want to put herself in the crosshairs of the CEO/CoA unless it's absolutely necessary.

The ongoing fiasco between veteran Indian batswoman Mithali Raj and Indian women's team coach Ramesh Powar is getting uglier with every passing day. After blame game between the two individuals involved, it has been learnt that Powar is unlikely to get an extension as the coach of Harmanpreet Kaur-led side as top BCCI officials are reportedly unhappy with the ongoing episode which has deeply affected the morale of the team. Powar drew the ire of fans and experts alike after Mithali was left out of India's semi-final clash against England at the recently-concluded Women's World T20.

Powar, who is at the centre of the backlash is unlikely to continue as the coach of the Indian team. His contract with the BCCI ends on Friday (November 30) and the decision not to continue with him comes after Mithali's serious accusations against him of trying to 'destroy her game,' and humiliating her during the tournament in the Carribean.

“Powar’s conflict with Mithali has ensured that he can’t continue as the coach of India,” a source was quoted as saying by TOI. The report suggests that Powar got a call from an 'influential' BCCI official on whose order he dropped Mithali without even consulting with the player once. The 35-year-old was in fine form in the tournament and had socred to back to back half-centuries before being axed from the playing XI for India's last group game against Australia followed by exclusion from the playing XI in the crucial semifinal encounter.

Mithali was adjudged as the Man of the Match in both the games but despite that she was dropped from the playing XI which baffled many. The BCCI officials are unhappy that Powar as a coach, failed to stand up against the pressure to drop her, adds the TOI report. The report further adds that Powar was asked to reason his choice of asking Mithali to play in the middle order during his meeting with BCCI officials on return from West Indies but he failed to come up with a convincing reply.

The report also adds that Powar had no communication with Mithali before dropping her from the crucial game. “Powar should have spoken to Mithali instead of dropping her straightaway after a phone call from Mumbai on the day of the match. This isn’t cricket,” TOI quoted a BCCI source as saying. However, Powar still has the backing of CoA member Diana Edulji.

Earlier on Thursday, Mithali had termed the day as the darkest one in her career after Powar in his letter to BCCI alleged that the former Indian captain blackmailed him and threatened to retire if she was not let to open during the tournament. Powar had also termed Mithali as someone he found very difficult to handle.

lol and someone was saying that lets start women's IPL. I mean who'll foot the bills?

Whether anyone likes it or not, women's cricket is still far far behind men's cricket and it should take at least a decade for women's IPL to get decent backing from sponsors.

What a drama queen!!

For me, the team comes ahead of anything. After the game, it was evident that the opening did not work as the team was 3/38 after power-play and yet in the team meeting the next day he informed me that we are going with the same opening pair as against New Zealand.

Errr.......maybe if you handn't gone over him to the selectors this situation might've been avoided. Entitlement written all over this rant of hers....

Is it really a problem, a player was dropped we lost but the reasoning provided has been corrected.

I would agree with the last part, but in today's world especially given Raj is a really senior cricketer I find it intriguing that no player is really backing her. Especially given likes of Harmanpreet are stars and don't actually need the bcci as much as Bcci needs them.

Who can a guy like Ramesh Powar be a coach, he's a couch potato :inzi

This is because you have played under him or coached by him or know people who were coached by him? Kind of ironic when a keyboard warrior calls someone a couch potato.

Diana Edulji is a cancer for Indian cricket. A bloody nobody hoisted on top of Bcci by the supreme court she is interfering everywhere.

Diana Edulji is a cancer for Indian cricket. A bloody nobody hoisted on top of Bcci by the supreme court she is interfering everywhere.

Is she though especially in this case, by Raj's own admission she went over the coach straight to a selector to put pressure on the coach to get her place. The coach allegedly reported it to the people who hired him and with their backing tried to stand his ground. If Raj hadn't acted like an entitled primadonna none of this would have happened.

Look doesn't matter what Raj was acting like, as a coach after watching Australia vs WI, I know that 130 is a good enough score ok that specific ground and for that Raj was absolutely necessary bc India only had 2 inconsistent performers and one upcoming talent in jemimah. Look at what playing aggressive did for India, they blew a great start by smriti and ended up 30 runs short. I don't care if Raj wanted to be treated like royalty, powar can't expect taniya to bat like sehwag just because he told her to. In fact she didn't even do 1/10 of Raj could have done. India lost this world cup bc of inability of coach and captain to choose best xl based on pitch, pretty much what kihki and sgastri did in England in the 2 ND test.

Ramesh Powar, whose controversial tenure as women’s coach ended on November 30, on Tuesday reapplied for the job after receiving strong support from T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur and her deputy Smriti Mandhana. The 40-year-old former India spinner confirmed to PTI that he has applied.

“Yes, I have applied this evening because Smriti (Mandhana), Harmanpreet (Kaur) have supported me and I can’t let them (the girls) down by not applying,” said Powar.

Powar’s stint after the Indian women’s team lost to England in the semifinals of the World T20 last month. The team management including Powar and Harmanpreet dropped senior player Mithali Raj for the knock-out game, triggering a massive controversy.

After returning home from the West Indies, Mithali went on to accuse Powar and COA member Diana Edulji of trying to destroy her and being biased against her. Powar, on his part, accused Mithali of threatening to retire midway into the World T20 after being denied the opening slot and creating chaos in the team.

Following the controversy, the BCCI decided to invite fresh applications for the post and set the application deadline for December 14.

Harmanpreet and Smriti have already said that they want Powar to continue while Mithali is against his return. The women’s team is a divided lot at the moment and so is COA running the BCCI. The COA comprising Vinod Rai and Edulji at loggerheads over the women’s coach appointment.

The BCCI invited fresh applications for the vacancy after Rai’s approval while Edulji said that the decision was taken without consulting her and the board could have continued with Powar till the New Zealand tour which starts next month.

When you have to put someone down, you’ll find ways to do it: Mithali Raj

India cricketer Mithali Raj feels the allegations against her made by Ramesh Powar for not scoring at a good strike-rate was part of the former coach’s personal vendetta. Mithali and Powar had a huge fall out during the Women’s World T20 in which India finished semi-finalists, a match which the former India captain did not play despite being fit and scoring two half-centuries in the tournament. (READ: It was the most difficult phase of my career – Mithali)

Speaking to Times of India, Mithali pointed out that it was purely out of Powar’s dislike towards her that the former coach made multiple accusations including “finding her aloof” and “difficult to handle.” Powar maintained that it was due to a poor strike-rate that Mithali was dropped against England and also because the team wanted to maintain a winning combination. However, when Powar was asked why Mithali’s strike-rate didn’t come in way of her selection for games against Pakistan and Ireland, he had no answer.

“When you have to put someone down, you will find ways to do it, even if that person has some good qualities it gets overshadowed by the dislike of that person. I don’t intend to justify anything about my scoring rate as there are people who score at a faster rate but are not that consistent,” Mithali said.

“So it works both ways, but people don’t see it that way when they are negative about the player. If you see the percentage of matches that India won with me scoring runs it will be a testimony to my abilities. I play the way I think best suits the situation and the way the team requires me to bat.”

With Powar ousted and WV Raman taking over the coaching duties of the national team, Mithali and Indian women’s cricket seem to have left that turbulent chapter behind. Mithali asserts that in terms of preparation she is fully determined and that it’s one of the many factors that keeps her going irrespective of the situation around her.

“I may not be forthcoming with my expressions and my body language, but when it comes to preparation I am quite aggressive. At this level I always want to be the best and wouldn’t want to push on just because there is no one else in the team etc. That drive is still there. I don’t like anyone getting me out even today, even in the nets,” she added.

Besides limited-overs, Mithali has featured in 10 Tests for India scoring 663 runs with a highest of 214 and averages 51 in the format. On the desire to play Tests, Mithali mentioned how she’s always loved squaring off against the red ball and the challenges that come with it.

“I would have liked playing with the red ball and the feel of actual cricket gives a different thrill. You are always trying to strategise, whereas in One-day and T20 you have a few strategies and you know how it all works. After a time you can guess where it is heading, but in Tests a lot of factors come into play,” Mithali said.

Such a sook this talentless and way past it lady!

Mitali Raj seems to be suffering from a persecution complex, accusing everyone, including people in power.
To those who think Diana Edulji is a nobody, she was one of the biggest stars in women's cricket in 1970s.

Who followed women's cricket in 70s? :))

The quality of female cricket is poor overall even today. Diana Eduljee and Shanta Rangaswami were the pioneers of Women's cricket in India, just like Lala Amarnath could be said to be the pioneer in Men's cricket for India.

Mithali Raj: Nobody knew that I broke a world record but now the whole world is watching women’s cricket

Alot has changed since I was playing in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The biggest difference is people are now aware of what’s going on with their national team. When I broke the world record for the highest individual Test score in 2002, people didn’t know about it unless they were going out to buy the newspapers.

Former India Test and ODI captain Mithali Raj says women’s cricket has come on leaps and bounds since she made her debut in 1999
Raj believes Thailand’s appearance in Australia could completely transform the landscape of women’s cricket worldwide
She predicts India to put up a good fight against Australia in Friday night’s tournament opener at the Sydney Showground Stadium
But now, it’s seen by everyone all over television and on social media – a lot has changed not only in how people get their news but their desire for women’s cricket.

We rarely got good grounds to play on back in our day. For example, at the 2000 World Cup we played at Lincoln University – quite different to the situation today where the top stars are getting to play at historic grounds like the MCG or the WACA.

We used to travel to different places all over the world to play but barely got any time to acclimatise. There was no travel or daily allowance, nor a physio or strength and conditioning trainer to look out for a fitness. We travelled to matches with just our head coach and manager and just didn’t have any form of cushioning.

Back in my day, we only had male players as inspiration because that’s all we used to see on the television. Today a young girl can have a role model in the form of a female cricketer and I think that’s the biggest chance I have seen.

I am very excited for this ICC T20 Women’s World Cup. The coverage and the reach of women’s cricket has grown so much since when I played in the 50-over World Cup in 2017, which is what is making it more popular.

And it’s not just the social media hype around it. For the first time, I don’t think there is just one contender, but four or five teams who could win it.

The gap between the top and bottom teams is closing. You can’t go by the practice matches alone, but it does give you a rough indication of how the tournament could play out. Take Sri Lanka beating England for example — there is a possibility that could happen again.

India also did well to chase 170 against the hosts Australia in the tri-series, where there were all sorts of different results. When you see these scores, and tight games, there is so much more quality now in the game, even just since the last edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup

Of course, they weren’t in a World Cup format but these glimpses show that the gap is closing. I think Australia go in favourites but we can’t push every other team aside. Teams like Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh can compete too.

I am curious to see how Thailand fare against the big sides in their first ICC tournament. Women’s cricket has come of age getting a team like Thailand in to play the top nations.

This tournament will reach out to non-cricketing nations because of Thailand. They do not have a huge cricket culture there, but having a team playing at an ICC tournament will help people in Thailand become interested in the World Cup and countries who have never been into a team sport like cricket will be inspired by their journey.

There isn’t long left until the tournament gets underway and India’s opener against Australia is definitely one of the matches I’m looking forward to the most.

Australia go in as favourites, but India will be no pushover. They have some very talented players and I think it will be a very close, high-scoring game.

In the T20 format, you can’t really predict a winner because it all depends on how the main players perform on that particular day.

Both teams have exciting players, particular in the batting units, and it will be a case of whoever can score the runs that their country need on the day.

I do think Australia have the advantage because of their T20 record and have a slightly better chance of winning the first game against India but no matter what, it’s going to be a very exciting way to open the tournament.

India veteran Mithali Raj has announced her retirement after a glorious international career spanning nearly 23 years.

Raj released a statement on social media on Wednesday, saying: "Like all journeys, this one too must come to an end. Today is the day I retire from all forms of international cricket."

"I feel now is the perfect time to call curtains on my playing career as the team is in capable hands of some very talented young players and the future of Indian cricket is bright."

Raj ends her 23-year international career 7805 ODI runs in 232 matches, at an average just over 50. She also scored 2364 runs in 89 T20Is, as well as 699 runs in 12 Tests, including a century and four half-centuries.

ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice led the tributes to Raj. “Mithali is one of the all-time greats of the game. Over the past 23 years, many young girls and boys will have been inspired to take up the sport after watching her."

She finishes her career as the top run-scorer in ODI cricket, 1813 runs ahead of the next highest – England legend Charlotte Edwards.

She bids farewell to the game as the No.7-ranked batter in the MRF Tyres ICC Women's ODI Player Rankings.

Raj captained India to the final of the ICC Women's World Cup 2017, and also holds the record for the most matches captained in Women's World Cups, breaking Australian legend Belinda Clark's record during the ICC Women's World Cup 2022 in March. She also led India to four consecutive Asia Cup triumphs between 2005 and 2012.

However, perhaps her most significant achievement as captain came in 2014 as India sealed a historic Test series victory in England, with Raj leading from the front.

"It was an honour to have led the team for so many years. It definitely shaped me as a person and hopefully helped shape Indian Women's cricket as well."

In her statement, Raj said she hoped to continue being involved in the game. "The journey may have ended, but another one beckons as I'd love to stay involved in the game I love and contribute to the growth of Women's Cricket in India and world over."

Whether people give her due or not fact is Mithali Raj was a trail-blazer for women's cricket in India who likely inspired millions of girls to pick up a cricket bat. That is not something that most cricketers can do. I think even more than her stellar record and achievements, that is something to be truly proud of.

Nothing but respect for one of the greats of the game on an incredible career.

Or I should rather say MS Dhoni for those final years approach of conservative stat padding batsmanship.

Mithali Raj appointed as Andhra’s Mentor of Women’s Cricket Operations Advisor

Former India women’s cricket captain Mithali Raj will don the role of Mentor of Women’s Cricket Operations Advisor of Andhra Cricket Association.

Mithali has signed a three-year contract with us with the specific objective of scouting and grooming young talent across the State. We are really happy that she has taken up this responsibility which is part of our efforts to give a new direction to women’ cricket,” ACA Secretary S. Satish Babu said in a chat with Sportstar.

“We are setting up a full-fledged High Performance Academy at Anantapur for women cricketers where initially we will be picking 80 girls from different age groups and will be given 365 days training combining academics,” the ACA Secretary said.

“The Academy will have not only qualified support staff taking care of the cricketing aspects but also medical personnel for the girls,” he said. “Obviously, we don’t expect any immediate results as this is a long-term project wherein the emphasis will be equally on physical conditioning and skills,” he added.

“Like about 300 men cricketers, whom we are paying Rs 3000 towards nutrition charges per head every month, the women cricketers will also be taken care off,” Satish said.

“In fact, it is Mithali’s idea to organise matches regularly for the under-15 girls against different State teams and also the boys in the higher age group to make them more skilful and confident,” the ACA Secretary said.

Satish also revealed that a similar High Performance Academy exclusively for men will be opened at Vizianagaram where even national players have to train there only.

“We are focussing a lot on rural talent and teams will go to interiors of the State to scout and groom talent. A critical review will be done by Mithali’s team on who should be focussed for long-term training and exposure,” Satish said.
