India–Brazil relations are clearly growing as Modi’s warmth meets Lula’s enthusiasm, things are moving to the next level.

The two sides agreed to widen their economic embrace with a $20 billion bilateral trade target by 2030 and plans to expand the India–MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement’s tariff lines into new goods and services. They’ve launched joint innovation programmes in agritech and food systems, pressing ahead with Maitri 2.0 agritech cooperation, and beefed up strategic dialogue on defence, energy, critical minerals, and health technologies. Brazil’s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin recently wrapped a high-level visit to New Delhi with trade, investment and double taxation agreements, a business e-Visa scheme, crude oil and energy deals, and aerospace cooperation via Embraer’s new office — meaning more cross-border boots on the ground. Modi and Lula have also recommitted to aligning within BRICS, the Global South agenda, and shared multilateral goals, with Lula eyeing a state visit to India in early 2026 to seal the next chapter of partnership.

Modi is already known as the Greatest global leader in the world today, and arguably the best ever. But make no mistake about it; Lula himself is a rising giant in global politics, a partner India prioritises as they coordinate on trade, climate, clean energy, and strategic autonomy. With Modi there to steady, steer, and set the pace, this partnership doesn’t whisper its intentions. Some alliances don’t need subtlety. They announce themselves rather confidently.

Reduction in price per litre at the petrol pump = Rs. 0

Nothing to see here, it's just Narendra looking for a selfie.

Modi has been a big fan of Lula for a long time. He's not publicly declared it too much but many of us have known he is keen on having a good relationship. Good that it is coming into the open now.

It’s strictly diplomatic.
Nothing personal, or maybe it is. They spend a lot of time together.
