Mohammad Abbas' triple-strike leaves Australia with an uphill climb ahead in chase of 462

“We’re still going to fight hard” – Aaron Finch

Australia ended the third day of the first Test against Pakistan well behind in the game, trailing by 325 runs with Pakistan having seven wickets in hand, but Test debutant Aaron Finch hadn’t given up hope completely.

“I thought the way we fought back at the end was a really good effort,” Finch said. “It’s obviously not ideal to lose 10 for 60 through the middle and the last session, but we fought back really well. The game is firmly in Pakistan’s favour but we’re still going to fight hard and hopefully win a game of cricket still, if we bowl like we did yesterday and tonight.

“Yesterday even though they got 480 we were brilliant, we stuck at our guns, and also to get them three down tonight. It’s going to be tough to chase down a total or to keep them out but that’s our goal, to keep them out and if we get in that position, who knows?”

Halfway through the day Finch’s debut had been rolling along nicely, but having made 62 he was brilliantly caught at short mid-on by Asad Shafiq. His dismissal set in motion the aforementioned collapse of 10/60 which saw Australia fall behind, and left Finch ruing the runs left out there.

“It was nice to get a few in the middle, but I probably left us hanging only getting 60,” he said. “If I go on and get 140, 150, and Ussie does the same, then we’re in a different situation. But not to be. Hopefully in the second innings we can put some real pressure on Pakistan.

“We had the opportunity to get in. The first 20-30 balls is the hardest in these conditions and we’d done a lot of that hard work and both let it slip. If we kick on like I said, it’s a different game. We both take responsibility for that, we let them bowl at two new batters a lot and that’s unfortunate.”

However, he also credited Pakistan for bowling well rather than just regretting his choice of shot. “They bowled beautifully through a 40-minute period there where we couldn’t get away. They were stump-to-stump with very straight fields, in-out fields that you just can’t get away. It was unfortunate to chip one to short mid-on, but hopefully next time either go right over the top or keep it on the carpet.”

With Australia likely to begin their battle for survival at some point tomorrow, Finch will get his chance to show what he's learned soon enough.

Pakistan once again proved why they are the best Test team in Asia...they are now on the verge of beating the mighty Australian team....IMO, pakistan is miles ahead of India in terms of Test cricket

10 bucks say you're trolling.

The sooner Pakistan get all out the better for them. 250 plus lead is enough for them on this pitch.

Pakistan need to be aggressive here , they have nothing to loose , the lead is already enough to win the game.

Coming out and trying to belt the ball across the Persian Gulf is all well and good but they need to rotate the strike instead of building dot after dot leading to the rash shots.

These two need to increase the run-rate today, we should ideally be declaring before tea with a lead of around 500.

Can see some strike rotation now. This should help to increase the RR.

Massive turn for this Labuschagne bloke, good enough to play for South Africa as a specialist spinner ? :kp

Lol this is funny. This is what it looks like trying to get quick runs and get out. Yet all of them have SRs in their 40s. Worst thing, it actually looks like they're trying to hit out too (and part of the reason why they're getting out).

Should get over 400, so it's all good hopefully.

Misbah would’ve scored the fastest Test century in these conditions. Out of all people. Who could’ve ever expected?

Need to bat another 15 overs max in next session and declare and have 4.5 sessions to bowl Aussies out.

Only Hafeez, Asad, and Babar are capable of scoring quick runs in this side, the rest are unnatural.

If you try and play at a run rate of 4 RPO on this pitch, the pitch looks absolutely devoid of any danger. If you go into the mental frame of mind where you think that prodding and blocking is the way to go, the the pitch will eat you up. Babar and Asad's partnership of 40 odd has been the most calmest and easiest of all.

Australia should look to bat at 3.5 RPO at least and they would find the pitch to be easy. If they go and try to bat for 4.5 sessions by blocking, they would lose by 250 runs.

Just need to be positive after lunch, the more time/overs we have to bowl Aussie out the better. No assumptions should be made they will crumble under pressure.

Asad and Babar done a good job upping the SR. Ideally we should have been putting Australia in to bat after lunch and probably should have had 50 more runs by this point. Hopefully we should declare in another 10-15 overs.

I know Australia got a low total altogether, but their opening stand was impressive and the openers played particularly the spinner well. So I'd like us to have a good one and a half days to get them out rather than just last day.

Pakistan will need sometime to bowl them out in case a partnership forms. It will be best to declare midway through the second session. I can’t see Australia winning from here.

we need as much time as possible to bowl them out..I expect them to fight and there will be periods where we will look bereft of ideas but we have to hang in there and be patient..

Pakistan have ground Australia into the desert sand, time to declare and finish them off.

Rameez at it again. Was critisizing Lyon and he takes out Asad very next ball. He praises or not, end result is always bad for Pak.

Declaration and Asad's innings comes to an end. Good innings by Asad. Watching him I'm a bit confused why he has done so bad in ODIs. He looks far more adaptable and more strokes compared to some of his team mates like Azhar or Imam and yet has done far worse than them.

Australia would have done well if they score more than their first innings total.... They can even claim moral victory...

137 overs to take 10 wickets, should be no excuses not to win game from here.

Good to see the Aussie batsman attacking...best to play their natural game plus it offers the bowlers a chance...

Unless Yasir takes 4-5 wickets in this innings or is redundant again in the next, is it time to move on from Yasir?

Why isn't there an ICC table which reflects the moral victories won by teams. The ICC Morality Chart? Could we have Moral averages and statistics? An MPL?

Yasir needs to just look to dry runs up here and wickets will come, hes trying to hard again and being impatient like the 1st inns.

PAK is defending 462 or 162?

Scorecard says 462, field placings say 162 - I am a bit confused here.

Yasir Shah 4 wickets in last 7 innings (domestic and internationals combined). Looking even worse than Lambuschane till now.

Absolutely insane captaincy by Sarfaraz . . Easy singles . . Long on, Deep cover . . youcan't let the batsman settle . you gotta trust your bowlers! You have 462 to defend in the 4th innings . .

I see we are already panicking..calm down people..this is test cricket..one wicket will change everything..

Last over or two before tea. Should sorround the batsman with close in fielder.

Repeat telecast of Aus 1st innings Pak just need one wicket and the game is done

For that we might need 25 more overs as till now there is nothing in the pitch. Not even one play and miss. Ideally though i hope we get atleast 3 wickets by end of play today.

Just dry up the runs and pressure will cause wickets to fall.

But, on same wicket, last evening how come AUS spinners choked PAK to 3 down for 45, with a deficit of 280? I don't understand why you guys always come as blind which automatically turns neutral fans here against Sarfraz? Do you think turn from wicket is the only key on 4th innings of a Test having 462 to defend? 44 of 82 has come from boundaries - that's 50% for 2 of the most inept batsmen when it comes to maneuvering spin - still you don't see what's wrong here?

I am not watching, but is there a case of pitch slowing down?

It should be, it's UAE. But, doesn't that make it even more difficult for hard hitters like Finch & Khwaja? You know the famous 3-3-3 Indian fielding against spin? 3 in catching, 3 to save singles & 3 in between boundary & 2nd ring just to entice batsmen to go over? And 6 on one side 3 other, blocking one side completely?

Watch for few minutes when spinners come back & see what's happening here. I hope, next time 2 when spinners come to bowl in tandem, things changes.

Where did Sarfraz come into this post when it had nothing to do with him? Pakistan lost wickets because we were looking for quick runs. Simple isnt it?

Btw you have Sarfraz phobia bro. 80% of your posts are bashing Sarfraz. Anyone who is watching match right now knows that he cant do much apart from may be an extra close in fielder. We understand he has proven you wrong multiple times starting from CT, but we all get proven wrong at times in life. Sarfraz is no exception, posters here are no exception. None of us is perfect. Your posts portray that all wrong is because of Sarfraz. I really hope you get well soon from this phobia. It really is not good for health.

some tight bowling by the seamers...same happened yesterday after the break which led to the wickets...

45 in 16'2 and you think PAK lost wicket for that they were looking for "quick runs"? What else a Captain who isn't bowling can do - but that little "apart from" part isn't what makes Captains?

That CT tournament, I was probably among very few to write first that in UK, PAK has a good chance, even after first game against IND. He is indeed proving what happens when cricket board is stuck with a WK captain whom they can't hide in between 6 batsmen or 5 bowlers.
