Only 4 wickets and this is 8th match at the PSL.

He's bowled some decent deliveries but also bowled a lot of garbage deliveries.

Noticed that his captain sets a specific field for him and he bowls the totally wrong delivery for that field.

Below par?

Totally agree with you Saj, his not performed to the level that you would expect an international bowler to being performing.

On screen he looks like an average bowler who's got no swing or any Yorker like deliveries. I certainly think he needs to be rested from international matches too!

I used to rate him highly a short while after his comeback because I thought he was a bit more smarter than the other Pak bowlers, but that's no longer the case. He bowls absolute tripe sometimes.

Has fine leg in, and then bowls on the hips.
Has mid off in, and then bowls a full ball outside off.

doesn't seem to care, just going through the motions, should have been dropped by KK sometime back

It is startling how utterly impactless he is. For all the songs of his talent and potential, he really doesn't catch your attention with his skill or demeanor. Yes he's economical, but he is supposed to be a strike bowler - the economy rate means nothing when you don't have the ability to take wickets.

Not good enough to be mentioned in the same sentence as Starc, Rabada and Boult and never will be.

Deluded fans will remain deluded. The truth is there for everyone to see. The list of excuses for him are even longer than that for Umar.

Karachi needs to trade this harmless bowling machine for a genuine wicket-taker.

Yet he gets first preference as a bowling in any format. Sami has been much superior bowlers compared to the likes of Amir in this tournament.

It makes you wonder about how long will he play on the basis of his potential alone.

In this year's PSL, he's been anything but economical. Has an economy of 7.5+

Wish he was never brought back again. I'm done with him after the Sharjeel episode.

True he has been utterly disappointing, no where near the level of performances we expect from him. Has good deliveries, then mixes it with rubbish at least once or twice every over.

However, if my life depended on it, and there was 10 runs in the last over that needed defending against a good batting side (like India or Australia) which Pakistani pacer would I pick to defend those 10 runs?

Amir.

Beginning to wake up to the fact that Amir isn't all that great.. playing more on reputation now.

However, the sad reality is we haven't really unearthed any good new pacers in this tournament (and don't give me the name of right handed Sohail Tanvir)

Unless Harbhajan was on strike. :yk

He has failed doing that against Aus and India (I think he gave away 16-17 runs) even before his ban in the penultimate over of the match. Both Hussey and Raina took him to the cleaners

That is not my point.

My point is that he is still better than the alternatives Pakistan has these days in the form of Anwar ali, Junaid khan, Umar gul, etc...

Was expecting Mamoon to go overboard with his "constructive" criticisms

It's been a year now, the excuse that he is still getting into his zone doesn't work anymore. However, we can also continue to make excuses for him and defend his mediocrity for years, ala Umar.

The fact is that he is a flat tyre, and it is difficult to sympathize with him because of his past. He deserves this.

You take it too far, Amir has not fallen to the depths of Umar Akmal

More garbage from Amir today.

A couple of lucky wickets at the end.

Bowled well today, but I doubt anybody noticed. Still he should be more consistent, though these are just meaningless T20s. The only poor ball was the short one to Shadab (who plays the hook well), then again these are short boundaries. I loved the send-off to Shadab, who has been PP's darling lately.

Hope Usman learned from Amir how to bowl at death. Don't bowl length, yorker is a better option.

Amir has been a big let down. Would take Sohail Khan and Sami ahead of him in the Pakistan team.
Amir needs to do a lot of work otherwise all this potential is useless.

Comparison so far at the PSL:
Sohail Khan 24.3-187-14
Mohammad Amir 30-2-230-6

I think he bowled well today, except for that one short ball to Shadab.A great yorker to Misbah in final over which reminded of BPL 2015,where he uprooted his off stump with similar delivery.

He is tied for most number of maidens in the tournament. More than overrated trundlers like Irfan Jr. and Anwar Ali.

Seems to be on his way.

You clearly seem to determine bowling quality only by number of wickets. Because Amir hasn't got many wickets, he is not just average but absolute trash as you keep stating.

However like batsman and runs, sometimes there are other criteria. Amir is bowling with pace, rhythm and is clearly our best bowler. It might have been a year since he's back but he is still yet to reach his full potential.

It is clear that in this psl, he has at times been poor by not bowling to his fields but he also has bowled maidens and created pressure which other bowlers, like sohail khan, have take advantage of.

But people want other domestic trundles to replace him. Amir isn't great, but he is better and good enough.

Agreed. Despite the wickets and the recent performance, if there was a three match series coming up (any format) and I had to pick one fast bowler from our current lot, it would easily be Amir, over Sohail or Wahab or even Hassan. Ask any cricketing oundit or explayer and they will say the same. However, many of the posters hyped him to the moon ahead of his comeback and now he hasnt performed to the unreal expectations, they have gone the other way and are labelling him complete garbage.

Before: he is the next big thing and no other pacer of this generation can match his talent.

Now: he is relatively better than his teammates.

In the future: He is overhyped and should not get a free ride.

^ that is the truth, but people will take their time before they realize.

Yeah,he is the only bowler who can bowl with good pace and swing the new ball.

Wow... I don't think you understand how ridiculous that sounds.

What's ridiculous in this? these are also the words of Australian players who played him in the recent series, that he was bowling really well with no luck.

It's sad to see how he and Wayne Parnell's career are panning out after showing such promise at the beginning of their careers. I had high hopes for them.
One has been destroyed by injuries the other by one poor decision at tender age.
But both are relatively young enough to carve out decent careers. Parnell looks like a lost course though. I hope that's not the case for Amir.

You haven't been watching Parnell since his return then.

And at the end of the day when you loo back on everything he only took 5 wickets in 3 test matches.

No matter which way you spin it, the fact is that barring 2-3 spells, Amir has been mediocre since his return, and we can be dishonest all we like, but deep down even his ardent fans - who are coming up with every excuse under the sun to defend him - know that he has well below the level they thought he would be one year into his comeback.

I'm not judging him by the wickets column; I have watched pretty much every spell of his since his comeback and he has been ordinary, in spite of the dropped catches. The time has come for his to be responsible for his own poor form and not hide behind others.

This 'he is creating pressure for others to capitalize' is just another excuse. Yes he is creating pressure but only for his teammates, who have take to wickets for him because he doesn't seem to be capable of striking himself, in spite of strutting around as a so-called strike bowler.

He is overhyped, that is all. There is no full potential yada yada, it is up to whether we accept the reality now or go the Umar Akmal way and live in denial for a decade.

What kind of logic is this. Since his return Sohail Khan has bowled better then him.
A few good spells out of 15 games don't eat he is world class and the best.
Others may not be as talented as him but clearly if going by form for past year since Amir return the likes of Sohail, Wahab, Sami and Hasan have bowled better then Amir. No doubt he has shown in the odd game or in a over or 2 flashes but he has not done anything of note anything special or consistent enough. Think he needs to be dropped from Pakistan team as others deserve to be ahead of him based on performances.

'He has been mediocre' is a subjective comment which you fail to understand. I have also watched almost every spell since his comeback and happen to think he has been good. Not great, but certainly not mediocre.

It is not about excuses. The reasons as you mentioned are those that are used to justify opinions. Note the use of the word opinions, they arent fact. The fact is he hasnt gotten enough wickets but my opinion (and it seems to be shared by many of the pundits and players) is that he has bowled well and it is great to have him back in the team (not talking about his past here, that is a seperate debate).

He might turn out to be mediocre in the future and your prediction will be right in that case. However the signs now, such as beating the bat and dropped catches, are that he will do well. But ofcourse you will discount these as 'excuses'

Once again 'bowled better than him' is subjective. He has taken more wickets, but how do we define 'better'? I agree that sohail has done very well and I actually think he should be playing for us in all formats. However, he is nearing the end of his career, while Amir is just restarting his, and no a year completed does not mean he has stagnated in his development and this is as good as he will ever be. I think he will continue to improve and has a much higher ceiling than Sohail or any other bowler we currently have.

Seems you never miss a chance to bash an emerging player.

In terms of action and fitness, Amir is by far and away the most complete bowler that Pakistan has.

He's got enough ingredients to justify his inclusion in all three formats.

Having said that, success is judged on taking wickets. Until he starts taking regular wickets his place will come under more and more scrutiny.

You haven't been watching Parnell since his return then.

Did well against a nothing Sri Lankan side.
Even then he was expensive. His bad tendencies haven't gone away, he still blows hot and cold.
At 28 a bowler ought to be mentally stronger and more consistent. I don't trust Parnell at all.

True he's been very poor. He should have been leading and guiding the likes of Sohail Khan and Usman Khan Shinwari but both hv bowled better than him. He really should at least be dropped from T20 and ODI teams. It's now been proven time and again the only way Amir will be successfully is if gen bowls on green decks. Besides tht he's average.

You are free to disregard my views like many other people, but I do hope that if things don't change by the end of this year, you will acknowledge that he is overhyped and all this potential talk is hot air. The signs that you speak of need to be translated into success eventually. A player cannot play on potential forever.

My patience has run out after 1 year. Perhaps, yours will take 2-3 years, but eventually even you will demand results as will every other fan.

Not patient enough. Bowled some absolute rubbish since a little while. Think he needs to realize he's not fast enough to blast out a batsman and work on the length he has to consistently hit. The shape he gets with the new ball specially is deadly if he pitches it up a little bit more and does away with the short-of-good length he is so fond of.

He has been an invisible man in this PSL if u ask me. Haven't even noticed him such impactless have been his performances.

He has been invisible for about 80% of his matches in the last year. It is his biggest issue, no impact whatsoever.

Oh but he's beaten the bat 4.783 times per match.

Pacers that outbowled Mohammad Amir

Sohail Khan
Mohammad Sami
Rumman Raess
Hasan Ali
Wahab Riaz
Sohail Tanvir
Aamir Yamin
Mohammad Irfan Junior
Mohammad Irfan
Usman Shinwari

Basically everyone in the PSL

First on the plane to Windies will still be Mohammad Amir.

Should never have been fast tracked back.

He needs to go home for a while and slow the game down again. I don't think he will be what we envisioned but at the same time, I don't think he will be useless.

Go home, start from scratch, play domestic, earn your spot back. Shehzad seems to have done the same and I believe Amir can as well. Confidence is obviously low right now as well.

So much talent destroyed by himself. Such a tragedy.

Captain sets a field and he bowls against that field....
I wonder why

His control is also not as good I thought. It was evident in Australia when he was bowling full-tosses one after another when he was trying to bowl yorkers at the death.

How did you come up with that list?

No way in hell did the likes of Tanvir, Irfan Jr, Irfan, Shinwari or even Wahab Riaz outbowl him.

He seems exhausted to me. The guy has played an absolute ton of cricket since coming back from his ban.

It's not like he is the worse bowler and selectors favor him and put him in all three formats, the point is he did not become what fans and frankly to some level management and he himself hoped for...

Pakistan needed Strac or Rabadha kind of spark in the form of Amir(nobody else is even remotely close to fulfill that kind of role, fans and management look up to Amir for that spark), expectation were that high, that did not happen not even close...

He has not evolved or developed rather become monotonous bowler, depth and breath pretty limited, length even with new ball is too short, no variation with old ball, no reverse swing, no yorkers or bumpers, all of those were expected at some point in last year...nothing substantial has happened.

Amir keeping a spot in toothless Pakistani attack is not an achievement, his role was to inspire next generation of fast bowlers and bring back the former glory, he failed to do that, deep down he knows that too, he is way off from where he should be. At the end of the day, person himself has to want more and dream big, it's not about others.

I think, he has bowled decently. May not be as everyone expecting, but definitely not like what I am reading here. What's happening here is the day he has a bad day, people are taking him to cleaners, but they just don't visit those threads on his good days, which is a bit double standard. Almost every pacer has gone though some beating here, but he is the only one playing non stop. Every team from PAK to KK & his FC teams is playing him non stop, which I don't understand why. His body is not tuned yet & he is struggling to play back to back to back matches.

He is a swing bowler, hence he'll struggle in UAE, but some of his balls in early spell was really good. Another surprise to me is, Amir is not the best old ball bowler - still Sanga is giving him 1 over, may be 2 at most in early spell & bringing him in last stages. May be, he is still the best available for him to bowl 2 of the last 3 overs, but I would have definitely used him for 3 overs in 1st spell within PP. This guy has to kick his luck as well - if someone like Pollard drops a dolly, what else one can do?

In T20, I think, it's extremely difficult to take maidens & dots - he has 2 maidens so far & his % of dots are also high, which indicates in rhythm, he is still a top bowler to score off; but those loose boundary balls that costing his stats. KK has some of the best cricket minds around & lots of experience - Arthur, Sanga, Mahela, Gayle, Malik, Bopara - if they are playing him every match despite his poor stats, I do believe there is a valid reason for that.

I back KK to win the title - so 3 more matches. I would like to revisit this thread once more after PSL final.

Awful choice. I would go with Junaid Khan.

Maybe what we saw of him 7 years ago was not really anything special. Maybe this is the real Aamir who we thought was our superstar.

Amir is the definition of overrated and overhyped. The guy was nothing special even before his ban. And because of the fact that he fixed and embarrassed us, I don't even feel sorry for him. He deserves this.

He needs to get it in his thick skull he is bowling too short the moment he stats pitching it up every thing will fall in place as he has everything else sorted I don;t know why he has become a back of a length bowler post return when he use to pitch is up when he first came on the scene.

mamoon i really hope him to comback strong after being rested for a good year..he is mediocre now and i see a huge gape bwn him and sohail khan...even usman shinwari bowls better than him....dont know why people hype this cheater so much..

he bowls rubbish with old balland always bowling short and on the pads in psl this year..not impressed really...sohail khan is the pick of the bowlers with wahab ryaz...

Very good post once again, and I agree with almost everything.

Amir shouldn't play T20Is for Pakistan for a while IMO. Man needs a bit of rest and in this format the likes of Hasan, Rumman, Sohail, Wahab, etc should suffice.

he bowls rubbish with old balland always bowling short and on the pads in psl this year..not impressed really...sohail khan is the pick of the bowlers with wahab ryaz...

That's the problem with his Captain - he bowls rubbish with old ball, so either don't bowl him there & if he does that with new ball as well, don't pick him. It can't be both ways & there is only one Wasim Akram who could do it both ways. I don't think they have anyone better, hence this guy is playing in every match - even that dead rubber at SCG, when the same Coach was there.

Sanga is another South Asian cricketer who has seen Vaas bowling 3 overs with new ball & then come back after 50 overs with old ball - rest is all about Murali. Most Asian Captains, don't have any clue of attacking with new ball & pacer - I thought Virat was a bit different. Then first time he got his tail caught in trap - he bowled 3 overs with Ishant & brought Umesh after 15 overs :(.

There are 6 overs PP - instead of this Imad darters, bowl 1, 3 & 5th over with Amir & then bring him on 16th over, after ad, sorry Strategic Time-out . Wait & see - in KOs, Arthur will force Sanga to do that.
