Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz.... will the list continue to grow?

Whatever the reasons given, the fact is that white ball cricket is where the cash is. Pakistan cricket has lost 2 bowlers from Test cricket and there is every chance more could follow.

What can the PCB do to stem this flow?

Worrying times or just what was expected?
 
Stop playing matches in UAE. We are destroying our fast bowlers there.
 
There is no comparison. Wahab is like 35 years old that's the time a fast bowler normally retires or is close to it. In wahabs case it's totally understandable considering his age no need to worry yet. PCB already made it clear to amir by downgradung his contract to C since he prematurely left test cricket.

To further enforce it though, PCB should only allow players to join PSL + one other league. That way players stay committed to Pakistan cricket

Expect Hafeez to leave Test cricket as well. Since Test cricket is too hard for spinners.

Set up a new contract as such that you can only represent Pakistan in all forms of the game at the discretion of the coaching / selection panel, if you choose to retire or opt out of a particular format then there will be a financial penalty. Therefore you can only sign up to play for your country if you are going to dedicate 100%.

It's like opting of insurance, you can't just do it like that can ya! only if the world was so pretty, we have to pay a cancellation fee.

Guys like Aamir, Riaz and others in the future should have to pay millions in compensation and also for not abiding by the contract / using Pakistan cricket to enhance their earning potential elsewhere, all these lads owe everything to Pakistan.

Beyond this Pak should definitely look to improve things like pay etc but I like the idea of penalising these cricketers severely, especially those like Aamir; he should be taken to court for betraying his country once again, but obviously nothing will hold up here. My plan is we should get him back, rework a new contract to include all these penalties; then when he retires we penalise him severely, if he doesn't pay up then take him to court and ruin his life, that would be delightful.
 
PCB needs to focus on keeping SSA, Hussnain focused on test cricket ... Aamir and wahab were not in the top priority list of tests anyways
 
I dont think so. Yes bowlers might start to take retirements between 32-35 (Previously bowlers used to go over 35 as well) to prolong their careers but leaving test cricket at the age of 27 like Amir did (Extreme case as I have discussed below) is of very low probability.

Wahab is 34 years old and there arent much years left in him so its a pretty right call for a fast bowler of his age.

Amir on the other hand is an extreme case with 5 years of ban and no cricket during that time. Yes people have different opinions but In my view its never easy for an athlete to come back after a complete lay of of 5 years and start playing the game again and incase of cricket all 3 formats. It was too much workload especially considering the bowling muscles didnt have to do anything for almost 5 years.

Irrespective of how we see Amir's decision, in my opinion we will see more retirements like Wahab when a bowler in nearing the end of his career rather like Amir.

Also this emphasises how no IPL is a huge blessing in disguise.

If these prima donnas made more money and played IPL you can only imagine the size of their heads
 
Hassan Ali , to be honest, since the champions trophy has been the worst Pak bowler by miles... going consistently over 7/8 RPO, no control , no wickets , no effort... he has been abs rubbish .... shld be dropped from the team for good...

Also I respect Amir’s decision to quit red ball cricket and although I can understand why some Pakistan fans are annoyed by his choice, one has to understand he will be needed in the next WC in top form + fitness.

He can’t cope with play all 3 formats with fitness and injury issues. Some PPers are naive to assume he’s “lazy” and “just wants to chase money of T20 leagues”, when it actually has nothing to do with that at all.

After the turn of the Millennium, Amir has been Pakistan’s best bowler in white ball ICC comps.

I don’t think there’s any need to panic and go overboard. It’s better to have players like this, then have the likes of Misbah retiring beyond his sell-by-date.

It's not really an issue. Amir had previously talked about retirement from tests and he had special circumstances, he missed 5 years of cricket and didn't work on fitness in that time, which is partly his fault but it is understandable as his heart wouldn't have been with cricket during that period.

Wahab was getting old, at his age most fast bowlers of his style of bowling retire.

SSA won't follow this path, he looks hungry for success.

We won't be needing Amir next WC. He only performs in England, on those dead Indian pitches he won't do anything. Also he's useless for bilaterals , just look at his 150 bowling average from 2017 to 2019 world cup. Mediocre, overrated player.
 
The concern is the younger guys, the future spearheads of the Test attack. If they chase the dollar, then that will be a massive problem.
 
I think both are separate cases. With Wahab it probably made sense considering he's 34 and has now earned a place back into Pakistan's limited-overs set-up. He would want to continue playing limited-overs cricket and T20 leagues in between. Including test cricket in those plans aswell would be a huge burden for him, given his age and the pace that he bowls at.

Amir's decision is still baffling to me. I think he should not have retired from test cricket and that he could have managed those potential injuries because he's still pretty young. Still it is one case. I don't think other bowlers from our current side will follow suit.

In future Test cricket will be where young bowlers learn their trade and move on to shorter forms of the game or only for specialists like Abbas or Mir Hamza who are not good enough for shorter forms of the game. There is no money and limited public interest in Test cricket so why would any cricketer want to keep playing Test cricket when they can in front of actual crowds and make money playing T20 cricket.
 
If any player wants to chase the dollar, you can't stop them. I'm sure every player knows deep down what is more important to them; representing their country or making money. In the age of T20 leagues we have to accept that some players will always value one thing more than the other. That's just how it is and it shouldn't be held against them.
 
Both bowlers have been criticised and calls have been made to have each dropped. Now they step aside people are complaining, if the desire and hunger is no longer there let them step retire. hopefully a few new bowlers will be uncovered during the quad e azam trophy and we can move forward into a new era.
 
I'd like Hasan Ali to go too. He's far too short for Test cricket.

But then I'd like the PCB to inform all bowlers that there choices are:

1. Be available in every format.
2. Be available for white ball cricket plus Tests outside Asia.
3. Nothing else.
 
Increase the pay for test matches

Rotate the quicks like the Australians do

Keep them away from the UAE and preserve them for sporting wickets
 
Test cricket is my favourite format of the game, I'm 26 years old now I have a handful of friends for whom test cricket is there favourite format.. Moving on to kids under 20 I couldn't find you a single one from who I know that love test cricket the most. I challenge you guys to find one under 20 year old who loves test cricket.

The point I'm making is unfortunately it is a dying format that offers less money and less fame for more effort. Just comprehend that for a second and honestly speaking I can't blame any young pro who packs in test matches for a longer limited overs career.

The icc has failed in its management of the game for quick cash. The structure of the sport is all wrong. Less effort more money, which other career gives such options.

Some posters are recommending PCB penalize such players or make policies that discourage players from doing that. That is the worst thing PCB can do.

PCB should encourage players to be honest with them. Penalizing players or blocking their priorities would make these players hide their preferences from PCB and you would end up with players like Amir in your team. The last thing you want to have a player in your team who does are not happy being there.

Amir’s retirement made it very clear why he was bowling at a pace of 128-130 in south africa. It annoyed Sarfraz so much that he called out amir for doing that in the post match presser.

Amir is a survivalist. He has been prioritizing his self-preservation since the last 3 years. He does that even in ODIs sometimes. Like in that WC match against west indies where Hasan Ali was bowling at 88 mph and Amir bowled at 82 mph because he thought we donÂ’t have a chance to win so why bother. West indians smashed him and chased the target in 14 overs which hurt our NRR big time.

PCB should try to implement policies so we donÂ’t have unmotivated players in the team. A case like Amir should not happen again in our cricket.

What PCB should do is to give Test cricket the elitism and prestige that it has in England or Australia. Mohammad Abbas should earn the same amount of money playing only tests as Pakistani players who play in T20 leagues. The same goes for a batsman who choose to be a Test player only. Then and only then would we have skillful bowlers and batsmen playing tests and remaining happy and motivated playing in them. Test cricket is a luxury. If we want to to enjoy this luxury, we have to cough up money for it.

As for Wahab Riaz, it is very unfair to judge him the same way as Amir. Wahab RiazÂ’s case is different. He did exactly what mitch johnson did and what steyn did recently. Even though he was never as good as them, his motivation for retirement is the same. He knows his best days are behind him in Tests so he wants to play LOI as long as possible. We should not judge a 34 year old bowler so harshly for making that decision. It is very much understandable

He’s coming towards the end of his career, it’s not a surprise. Don’t expect this to be a trend.
 
Pakistan plays very little test cricket , even if a fast bowler is a regular pick he will be very lucky to play 60 65 test matches in next ten years. Not a career you would want.
 
Wahab is close to 35 if not 35.. I think in his case its a sensible decision. Infact so far the only players who have decided to go away from test cricket are 30+ and yes Amir is 30+. I would start to worry more if we have bowlers in 20s quieting test cricket.
 
Steve Smith is going to put the rest of mediocre pak bowlers ie Hasan Ali into retirement in December. The other 2 have jumped ship before it sank.
 
Amirs retirement was triggered because over bowling him. It is also fatigue, stress factors contributing its part + the family time, not just the money.

PCB such an unprofessional board dont know how to manage workloads of their bowlers. They see players as their paid labours. Now its SSA turn to do that labour thing which Amir did, and surely end getting his back stretched too much which Abbas went thru. They shud stop playing their premium bowlers in dead rubbers be it tests or ODIs

In exclusive remarks to PakPassion.net, the veteran all-rounder has stated that as he has retired from Test cricket, he wanted to give chance to youngsters to prove themselves so he is not playing in the QEA 2019/20, instead is involved in the ongoing CPL tournament. He has indicated that he is, however, available to play white-ball cricket at the domestic and international level. Once the CPL season is over, he will be available to play in the QEA if his services are needed by the PCB.

The fact that suggestions are being made to give ultimatums and penalties says everything we need to know about which is the dying format and which is the premier format.
