Currently, stands at 30.89.

Needs to gets it under 30 ASAP.
 
Us Indians would gladly give a permanent spot to a fast bowler who can average 31 in Test cricket :))
 
Can't expect modern day fast bowlers to average under 25 unless you're Steyn. I believe Amir is just fine.

Currently stands at 31.51

Good opportunity to get it below 30. Maybe it could have happened by now if not for the dropped catches.
 
Amir's journey to the top will be similar to James Andersons, he'll end up with a career similar to him
 
IIRC, Amirs average is bordering around the 31-32 run mark since the English tour.

Has been constant since then.
 
Average is fine , but any bowler needs to bowl few match winning spells. That's count for a lot.
 
He's become a back of a length bowler now. Looks very similar to our other trundlers atm.

I actually thought his average was in mid 40's the way some parosis have been criticizing him!
 
Currently Averages - 31.21

Desperately hoping he can pull out a 5fer in the next match to lower that average.
 
He is a holding bowler. He'll bowl you maidens and be a very good new ball bowler. Someone who can guarantee control. Sohail is a better bowler atm.

He isn't a "very good" new ball bowler. He can't swing the ball so that automatically removes him from the category you've placed him in.
 
He has been Pakistan's most consistent pace bowler since his return (although recently Sohail, despite his unwarranted criticism on these forums, has been the best seamer, especially early on in the bowling innings), but hasn't been bowling full enough. I thought he bowled very well against NZ.

He should still be blindly picked in the side because whilst he hasn't been bowling magical deliveries, he has been getting 1-3 wickets early on pretty much every innings, and has been doing a very good holding job. Pakistan's best fast bowler now in my opinion.
 
Not worried about his average, that'll come down to 24-26 eventually as long as he continues to bowl well when conditions suit him and develops his bowling to also be a threat in unhelpful conditions.

He's slowly getting back into the groove of international cricket and as a 24 year old, he's still two-three years removed from his peak. He needs better bowling partners than Sohail and Rahat for sure though. These two are decent backup options but don't have the venom that good fast bowlers have.
 
Not worried about his average, wickets column, economy, strike rate, swing, or speed.

He has talent.

I think sohail need better partner than Amir.
 
I have a feeling that this average will approach 35 by the end of Aussie tour. How many Tests do Pakistan play there?
 
He is still young and needs a sustained run in the side. He might not be Akram level or even 20% of that but Pakistan are not exactly having Wasim Akram sitting on the bench instead of Amir. Besides, he showed some good quality in this test.

Even if it does, chances are that he will end up his career with an average below 30!

Very unlikely, he seems to really struggle on every surface where there is no movement. He is going to play most matches in UAE. Even Australia is mostly flat nowadays.

Why do you thin so? NZ is likely to put another green top and he can't bowl that badly. Then Aus has one day night as well. That's 3 guaranteed test which had/will have very good conditions for him. He doesn't look like a bowler who is going to run through sides for now, but he can chip in with wickets. To end up with average of 35 , he has to probably average near 100 in the next 4 tests. I havn't checked the numbers here, just making a point.

In the gym perhaps. On the cricket field, Amir is on a different level. Pakistan has three good bowlers in Amir, Shah and Riaz. They need to find one more quality pacer to have a bonafide world-class attack.

I have seen more talk from people like you about him being different level than actually seen on the field. From England to WI series to now, there are other bowlers who bowled as well as him if not better. Bowlers from Pak got 5-fers as well. But no, Amir is on different level because? If Amir had supported Sohail's awesome spell on day 2 who knows?

Maybe because you haven't watched him enough. He was very good in the current match, our best pacer on show and he bowled well in England without anything to show for it.

In my post itself I have named Shah and Riaz alongside Amir as good bowlers so it's amazing that you still managed to misinterpret it. Amir is at a different level to Sohail and Rahat.

So you missed what Sohail was doing with the new bowl in first innings? BTW cricket history is full of bowlers and batsmen who "looked" great and beat the bat or hit some amazing shots. If you cannot convert them to big results you are pretty ordinary. Rahat took more wickets than Amir in the first innings, now you call it luck or whatever else, its still results. Just like if a batsman scores a 100 while other scores an eye pleasing 70, the 100 will be more praised
 
I would like to add that I am not interested in averages. I don't care if he doesn't average below 30 as long as he wins matches for Pakistan.

The duo of Anderson and Broad is a great example. For the most part of their careers, their averages hovered around 30 which isn't pretty, but they have won England many, many Tests.

Amir on the other hand is yet to win Pakistan a single match with his bowling since he has come back into the team. Dropped catches etc. are just excuses.

He is simply not having enough impact and influence on proceedings.

It's been less than 10 games since he came back and has still done admirably. I don't know what your expectations were from him but I can't say I'm sorry that he's disappointed you. Fickle fans don't deserve much.

As for me, I knew he would start slow since he's basically making his debut once more. I've seen him outbowl Sohail and Rahat quite comfortably and if you don't agree, we can disagree on this and get on with our lives.

If Aussie decks are as flat as they have been for the last 5 years, I expect him to average near 50 in Australia, and that alone will push his career average close to 34. Now obviously, this is a rather pessimistic view of where he is heading, but I have always believed that Australia will be his biggest challenge, so I see it happening.

As for the next Test, I remember Hamilton pitch to be really flat. I'll be surprised if it is as green as this one.

Hilarious. Listen to this guy. As biased as it gets. He gets wickets and the conditions were helpful. He doesn't and it was a flat track. No point arguing with such people. Anyway on topic, Amir has bowled beautifully in this match so far. His setup to wade was exceptional not to mention he dismissed their most dangerous batsman and would've gotten Smith too had we reviewed
 
And the best part is he's only gonna get better. Anyone with some knowledge and unbiased eyesight knows how he is improving with every game

If you bother applying your brain, you would realize that there is nothing biased about what I said. I am not the one making a call on pitches, it is your own countrymen, and most of them agree with what I said above. Aussie pitches since the South African tour are not as flat as they used to be.

Yeah if he flopped today then it would be "this guy sucks in Aus, told you guys, he averages 40 here, etc etc"

Have been critical of him myself and he deserved some of the criticism he got earlier which was earned, but hating on him just for the sake of it is as bad as hyping him for the same reason.

There are two factions in PP. one that thinks Amir is the greatest thing since sliced bread, the other are the people who would criticism even if Amir took 10 wickets.

Stop assuming. Unlike your resident haters who show up every time a player flops, I honestly don't give two hoots about bumping threads to make a point. I have had more such debates on Yasir with the likes of Bilal, and his failure here didn't make me go "told you so". Infact, I am not even bothered to talk about that.

I know you lot are excited with Amir picking two wickets, but keep me out of it unless you really have a point that proves me wrong. My prediction was conditional, and besides, the series isn't over yet. So hold your excitement.

Bit weird calling Yasir a failure when he has only bowled in the first innings of the first test match on day one? Kids really should not watch test cricket. No one should have to read such rubbish 'expert' opinions like this post.
 
Amir fans beginning to grow in confidence, like the bowler they support.

Will be interesting if Amir gets a Five wicket haul here.

That wasn't directed at you, it was a general comment about how Amir's performances good or bad are taken here.

Nor am I responsible for "my" resident haters. Am not a thekedar for every biased post someone makes for another player. I'm only responsible for my opinions, and afaik have only praised Kohli in his current run same for Ashwin.

Nobody is getting excited. I did misread your post, I missed the "if the pitches were as flat as they used to be" apologies for that, but as far you saying this will be his biggest challenge, which has some substance, he's on a good start.

It's due to bowling a touch short that he is not getting nicks. If you are missing 25 edges without any nicks then you are bowling a bit short. Bowling right length on different pitch is not an easy skill.

I think the poster was suggesting he's bowled well and it's true. He's been the pick of our bowlers.

His main issue is he can't revert back to honing in on the stumps like the past greats used to. They'd take the fielders and edges out of the equation.

He'll have to adjust his approach but it's nice to see the pace is up.

Yep, taking all these into account, he actually averages 3.22, an all time GOAT. Reminds me of Javagal Srinath, he had such great pace and batsmen used to play and miss him all day. Unfortunately he rarely got wickets. Ended up averaging 30.49 in his career.

Must have been good at the start of his career. I only watched him at the fag end of his career when he looked a bit worn out. Heard he had very good pace at the start of his career, bowled 145k+ a lot but apparently not the aggression needed for a fast bowler.
 
Srinath was a seriously good bowler by Indian standards. Bowled so many important spells for us in Test cricket. Unfortunately never got much support from his fellow fast bowlers.
 
I can't judge anything, to be honest.

Today he was bowling to 1 slip at the MCG with a ball that was 15 overs old.

Until he gets a skipper who knows how to set a Test field for a quick bowler outside Asia there's just no way to assess Amir.
 
So the hypothetical average has a newer parameter added, "missed edges". :amir
