Q. To touch on Mohammad Rizwan, but just from the same point of view, just what it says about his commitment and how courageous he was to not only play today but play the way that he did.

BABAR AZAM: Definitely he's a team man. The way he played today, it was exceptional. When I saw him, he was a little bit down, but when I asked him about his health he said, no, I will play. And the way he played today he showed that he's a team man. And I am very confident about his attitude and his performance.

Damn i love this guy. He took one on the face today and it left some swelling.

The guy was down today as he didnt speak that much behind the wicket. Yet hw gave a wonderful performance. Respect to Rizwan

Selfish cricketer. Should have not played if unfit

If not for atrocious full tosses by Australian bowlers today, he would not have even scored those runs

What a despicable person you are.

Easy to bark on social media, doubt you can perofmr like him

These comments are disgusting. Rizwaan played because he knew how important he was to this team. He played because he didn’t want to let his country down. He played because he’s one of the most genuine men in our nation. Disrespectful comments say more about the person writing them than the person to whom they are directed.

Commendable on the personal level for the team management, this is a game not a war, such behavior should be discouraged. He is not the only player, other players need to be given a chance in those situations

His batting was impressive and exactly what was expected of the amazing character that he is.

However after batting throughout the innings, taking a ball to the face and a long diving slide which looked painful, I was seriously concerned about his keeping.

But he did not make a mistake. There were a few tough takes and Wade let through 4 byes while Rizwan stopped a couple that bounced just before him. Could have been the difference between victory and a loss.

Exceptional cricketer. We are blessed to have him.

Amazing spirit, these are the types of cricketers you need if you are going to take your team to the top.

A top class batsmen but even better yet a gem of a human being. These are the type of people we want representing Pakistan cricket, however some fans would prefer an overweight, match fixer who would sell himself off just to get a couple of dollars to buy himself 10 extra plates of biryani.

It might be a cliche saying however Rizwan is the type of player we need and Sharjeel is the type of player we deserve

He's a hero. Mans played so well despite being ill, that explains why he wasn't his usual self in the beginning getting all jittery before settling.

I would say it's heroic but unprofessional. Both can happen at the same time. Sometimes, even if you have best intentions at heart, there may limitations come and you should remove yourself for the sake of the team.

The adrenaline rush may give him the confidence but in reality, one may not perform same as when he would be fit.

I wouldn't have allowed him to play though. But would have remembered this gesture for next selections.

Rizwan is a gem and should ideally be Pakistan's captain in limited overs cricket.

I agree with this. Appreciate him being willing to play but if he spent night in ICU no way it made sense to throw him unto semi final. He seemed a bit out of sorts , not talking as much, conserving energy, etc in the end not the reason for our loss but even for his health sake both short term and long term I don't think this was a good decision by management.

Agreed. This could also be dangerous for the player at times. Just recovering from chest infection and then all these running/stress/mental pressure will add more stress to his body which would have been ok in another day but for someone who has just recovered, seems a bit dangerous.

Just to clarify, I am not trying take anything away from Rizwan. His commitment is praiseworthy and you don't get commitments like this everyday. But I'll be concern for his health in circumstances like this.

Favourite player for a while now because of his ability and performances, sure - but also from what I've seen of his character.

Rizwan tinted specs won't allow me to be drawn on whether it was right or wrong to play. Hero.

Appreciate Rizwan’s commitment to the game, but how on earth did the team doctor & management clear a guy who was in the ICU the night prior to play the match? God forbid something had happened to him on field - who would have been held responsible in that scenario? Is a match more important then a player’s life? Such things can happen only in Pakistan…

T20 World Cup: Indian doctor who treated Pakistan batsman Rizwan says his comeback was a miracle

The Indian doctor, who treated Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan in the ICU, is astonished at the quick recovery made by the seriously ailing but gritty wicketkeeper-batsman, to be match-fit for the ICC T20 World Cup semis against Australia.

“Mujhe khelna hain. Team ke saath rehna hain” (I want to play. I want to be with the team), Mohammad Rizwan used to tell doctors, who treated him in the ICU. The Pakistani opener, who smashed a fifty (52-ball 67) and top-scored to steer Pakistan to 176 against Australia in the semis, had joined the team after fighting a severe chest infection and more than 30 hours in the ICU.

“Rizwan had a strong desire to play for his nation in the crucial knockout match. He was strong, determined and confident. I am astonished at the pace he had recovered,” said Dr Saheer Sainalabdeen, specialist pulmonologist at Medeor Hospital, Dubai, who treated the cricketer.

On November 9 at 12.30 am, Rizwan landed at the emergency department of the hospital with severe retrosternal chest pain mimicking cardiac pain and breathing difficulty. He had been suffering from intermittent fever, persistent cough and chest tightness for three-five days by then.

The medical team stabilised him and gave him symptomatic medications to ease his pain.

“His pain score at the time of admission was 10/10 (worst pain). So, we subjected him for a detailed evaluation to diagnose the condition,” Dr Sainalabdeen said.

The results confirmed that the player had severe laryngeal infection leading to an esophageal spasm and bronchospasm. It is a painful contraction of muscles within the esophagus.

Talking about the condition, he said: “Esophageal spasms can feel like sudden and severe chest pain that lasts for a few minutes to hours.”

The medical team shifted the 29-year-old cricketer to the ICU and monitored his condition continuously. Rizwan had to manage severe pain and other issues induced by the medical condition.

“Rizwan had a severe infection. Recovery and gaining fitness before the semifinal seemed unrealistic. It would have normally taken five-seven seven days for anybody to recover,” maintained Dr Sainalabdeen.

However, the cricketer was confident and displayed tremendous willpower.

“He seemed very focused and believed in God. His only thoughts were about the semifinal.”

Two nights in the ICU, Rizwan responded well to symptomatic medications and showed significant improvement. His pain score had come to 2/10. The doctor believed various factors might have contributed to his faster recovery.

“Rizwan was firm, courageous and confident. His physical fitness and endurance level as a sportsman had been key in his recovery. He had been in the ICU for 35 hours,” the doctor explained.

After being evaluated by a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, Rizwan was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday around noon

I'm guessing that they left the final decision to Rizwan and he said he wanted to play and was well enough to play.

This is the attitude and fight all players of all teams should have, Win or Lose this is what we want from Pakistan team.

He's a real hero, passionate and gives his all for the country..
but a player's health should always come first.
The management should have taken the decision out of his hands considering he was in ICU for two days.

The story seems straight out of a bollywood movie - 2 days in ICU hooked to various medical equipment then resurfacing straight in
a cricket match & hitting a fifty. Now only if the climax had followed the script…

Again no doubts on Rizwan’s commitment, but whether he was fit or not to play was not his sole decision to make; the team has a doctor for a reason. And i doubt any doctor in the world would have cleared him to play a match after 2 days in the ICU. PCB management should be questioned why they thought that this match was worth gambling with somebody’s life.

Rizwan should have been sent home to recuperate instead of sending him to Bangaldesh.

Rizwan speaking to the press before departure for Bangladesh

"I was told that my condition is not good but I said that we as players are like our armed forces, just like they are ready to sacrifice themselves, we feel the same - I am always ready to play for Pakistan"

Extremely gritty and mentally strong cricketer.

He is the only active player from other subcontinent teams currently that will walk into the great Indian test team of 2015-21 led by the legendary captain in Virat Kohli with 38 test wins to his name and that is inspite of already having an excellent keeper batsman in the team.

Comments from Interim Pakistan Head Coach:

"In the morning when I met Rizwan, he said look we are here to fight and it will be an honour for me if I even sacrifice my life for Pakistan"

"When Riz said that so I said this is a big thing and I spoke to Babar Azam and told him that Rizwan is saying that it would be not an issue if he loses his life for Pakistan, and that it would be a great honour and privilege to serve our country - we said lets put a tick mark [on his fitness] and take him for the game"

Team management was very unprofessional in this regard. God forbid but it was very risky if above is true.

You forgot to throw in that all these great achievements are down to IPL

Humble, down to earth, focused, determined, motivated, an excellent performer, an inspiration for many - there´s a lot, a lot, to learn from Rizwan. What a likable guy!

I wish him so many runs and much success even in the future.

What a Legend.

Will soon become Pakistans greatest ever wicketkeeper batsman

I partially agree with this but at the end of the day, unless his vitals are in bad shape, the decision is upto the player.

The thread is about Mohammad Rizwan. Kindly stick to the thread and don't derail it :inti

The most clutch cricketer in Pakistan and one of the most clutch players going around.

We are blessed to be living in an era where there are two of the most clutch wicket keeper batsmen playing together at the same time. Ab Fan

Incredible determination and strength of character.

He probably wouldn't have played had the decision been left to the medics.

An inspirational cricketer.

These sort of comments from “fans” are ridiculous. How shameless can you be. He was arguably man of the tournament and has been a wonderful opening partner for Pakistan and Babar at the top. Full tosses or not you still have to put them away.

In the next few years Rizwan will be the best wicketkeeper batsman across formats in the world. Wait and watch he’ll prove all the haters wrong who talk about his strike rate and place in the team.

There are reserve players exactly for this reason, if a player is not 100% fit he should not have played , this is quite straight forward, does not matter if you're RIzwan or Gillchrist.

Its not the question of guts, what matter is what is best for the team. His slow SR was another reason for the loss in SF.

What an awesome champ...
gives his 100 pc all the time
His off side play could do with some improvement
but a real super star

And decision should have been left to the medics , everyone wants to play but whether one is fit or not that what matters. That's why there is fitness test done by professionals in every sport.

Why we condemn the players who hide their injuries but play, Rizwan's SR was slow, that put Babar under pressure , hence he got out . Had Rizwan played with better SR, total would have been even higher.

These are the players we need playing for Pakistan, brave and willing to put their bodies on their line, to get such a score when your ill, amazing, how much more runs would he of got if he was totally fit?!

Here you have a wicketkeeper who is desperate to represent his country after spending 2 nights in ICU and then there is another wicketkeeper who is taking rest during an upcoming important test series. :inti

on social media and on some forums "across the border" they are saying its all publicity stunt by PCB and ISPR.
they hate so much everything about Pakistan.
but lap it up if comes from BJP IT cell.

He should have been rested from the Bangladesh and could have tried another keeper for t20is atleast. Maybe Mohammad Akhlaq or Zeeshan Ashraf for t20is. Best for him to rest. Rohail can do a good job in Tests.

A brilliant example of determination, hardwork and dedication. Hope his attitude remains the same and keeps rising to higher standards and doesn't go the complacency route. It was said by Misbah in 2014 that Sarfraz was like Oxygen for the team. At the moment, Rizwan is the heartbeat of the team.

This was the biggest game of his career and he was rightly motivated to play this one. But I do feel the medical staff was a bit careless in this regard.

Plus there should have been enough care for the players especially during a high profile tournament by the medical staff. You don't simply catch chest infections/lower respiratory infections possibly bacterial without carelessness that too in a hot and humid weather of UAE. There should be some enquiry as to how 2 players caught the disease and if the medical personnel was negligent or not.

Yeah this doesn’t quite add up

You can’t be extremely critical for 2 days and then play a major semi final with that kind of intensity

Clearly there is a lot of exaggeration going on here.

I think it builds up a good reputation for PCB and audience does love it. PCB will cash on it.

There is one thing to hate anplayer, but you take it to an extreme level.

Looks like the way you got bashed about rizwan you have started to question hos health now. Doctor, saqlain, hayden and even a pic is there to show he was in icu. Stil haters like you whose favourite fixer didnt get selected will still doubt it

Posters here who are now bashing pcb for this. If rizwan felt he is healthy and could play, than there is no issue. Rizwan was the main player along with babar, and a half fit rizwan is much better than a fully fit sarfraz.

Rizwan than also showed performance. I doubt anyone pf the players would had matchd his performance.

He felt he was heathy and can play than good enough.

My respect for rizwan has increased just because of his character. After Misbah, for me Rizwan is my next favourtie batsmen. His faith in divine, his character and his game really inspires me.

Meanwhile we had Amir who whined on twitter because the coach made him train.

If somebody is not match then they shouldn't play the game, playing him will cost the team more often than not..

No one is lying Mening Ji..Rizwan was treated by an Indian doctor!!! We really know our trade lol.
Rizwan was treated by Dr.Saheer who is from my native place and my brother's batch from college.

This is the first time I saw Rizwan play and boy, have become fan of his never say die spirit and giving it all for his team.

Just the way how seriously he takes his running between wickets, should be enough to silence his critics.

Hats off! Would love someone like him in Indian team. Not necessarily as a keeper, but in any role.

I think Siraj has that jazba in him to value his Indian cap most dearly but he doesn't get played in all formats and is not even played in all tests we play.

If somebody is not match then they shouldn't play the game, playing him will cost the team more often than not..
Agree with this. However in his defence, there may not have been a like for like replacement in the squad. May be that's why he volunteered to play? Plus it was a Semi final of a world tourney.

I don't think Rizwan did a favor to the team by playing when not fit .

Team need a tough coach who would not let such things happen .

Why Hasan Ali was not dropped is another big question .

Hafeez is also way too old to face Australian fastmen but no one could make a call to drop him.

What kills that argument is that the Doctor who actually treated him was Indian.

Agreed! what drameebaazi

someone in ICU for 2 days and then playing competitive game next day and not for a moment looked like even struggling

Rizwan here challenges all doctors or medical practitioners in Pakistan

Oh VVS don't you understand that this is all a conspiracy set up by the PCB and Rizwan's family in order to ensure Rizwan's place in the team for the next 30 years and to make sure that Pakistan's greatest batsmen and most honourable player, Sharjeel Khan, doesn't find a place back in the team.

I mean come on why would someone have the will and determination to play for their country even after spending two days in the ICU (fully diagnosed by an Indian doctor and confirmed by guys like Hayden) when he could be eating 10 plates biryani payed for from the money he earned fixing.

Post of the decade for me from the GOAT poster

Exposing Rizwan for the fraud he is. No honour, no will, no respect. In fact I would go as for to stay that he probably payed of the Indian doctor to falsely diagnose his case to ensure public sympathy.

We need to bring back honour to this team. Bring back Sharjeel and Sarfraz

Being a Sr. medical professional (in USA) and an avid pakistan cricket follower; I can vouch from my experience , if someone is in ICU (Intensive Care Unit only meant for emergency protocols and intensive medical care) its hard to believe if someone recovers so quickly and went on to play a competitive sport from ICU

My guess is , he was sent to ICU (probably being an international athlete, not for his condition, which might still be a mild harmless fever) not for some life threatening procedures.. So please dont confuse ICU with Rizwan's harmless illness

That is why this whole sounds more staged than actual medical condition

So if someone dont understand what kind of patients are are only allowed to admit, can read below :

That is why my guess is, this whole Rizwan situation is highly exaggerated and staged just for views and likes

What happens after critical care?
Patients may be moved to the hospital ward or a rehabilitation facility, after making improvements during a stay in ICU.

This does not mean that the need for medical care is gone; it means that the patient has improved beyond critical and is in stable condition.

Patients who have suffered critical illness often need significant time and a lot of rehabilitation and therapy to continue to get well.
