More misery for the masses as petrol prices in Pakistan are likely to rise [Post Updated # 419]

Imran Khan: "mai sab ko rulaonga"

He was certainly right. Today, the entire country is crying over this unprecedented price hike.

Here is the reality - a reality that PTI supporters, especially the delusional overseas supporters (since they are hardly any local supporters left) fail to recognize and shy away from.

No one is interested in and no one cares about technicalities and excuses/justifications that the PTI government has nothing to do with these price hikes because it is down to global supply & demand and price fluctuations.

Today, the common man on the street is abusing and cursing Imran and his government. Imran and his government is being bashed left, right and center. Imran is now viewed as the most incompetent and clueless PM the country has ever seen. No one has an ounce of faith left in him, his words and his hollow promises.

The entire country is fed up of all the rona dhona over the performance of the previous governments and how Imran and PTI try to take credit of anything good that happens while dumping on all the blame on PMLN and PPP for the stuff that they mess up due to their own dumb policies.

Imran and PTI blamed the government for petrol price hikes in the past but now, they want to be excused because it has nothing to do with them. You reap what you sow, and this government is getting a taste of its own bitter medicine at a higher dose.

When you make tweets like these, the nation will not spare you when it is your run turn to handle the reigns:

The whole country is aware of the fact that Imran and his government is going to get thrashed in the next election because they have completely lost the support of the public - from the poor to the middle-class to the upper-class, no one is is supporting the fake messiah anymore.

This is why PTI is desperate to include overseas Pakistanis in the vote bank because they are the only ones who are still supporting PTI due to multiple reasons: they are delusional and have no awareness and exposure to the ground realities or they are benefiting from the fact that PTI has destroyed Pakistan's economy. As Pakistan gets poorer and poorer, they get richer and their purchasing power in Pakistan increases, thanks to their dollars/pounds/euros.

Moreover, there is also another group of PTI supporters who function as a cult. These people basically worship Imran Khan and will defend him no matter what. They are completely brainwashed. If Imran claims that the earth is flat, they will defend him and believe in him. These people cannot be helped.

Nonetheless, the biggest source of frustration for the public is not the incompetence and disaster-class performance of this joker government; the biggest source of frustration is the fact that the public feel helpless. They know that their vote has no significance and power as long as the military establishment is backing Imran Khan.

Imran and PTI's future is in the hands of the establishment. They don't have the interests of the nation at heart, but at the end of the day, considering the rate at which PTI is destroying Pakistan and the rate at which the public is turning against Imran and his clueless government, they will be, eventually, forced to take action because this cannot continue forever.

Another long rant. Have you found out how an exchange rate is determined because you are commenting on things you have absolutely no idea about. It's because of economic illiterates like you voting for crooks that allowed the structural damage to the economy with exports at 23bn and imports at 60bn. Look it up son, you might learn something.
As far as PTI having no support, what do GB, AJK and the Sialkot bye election have in common.

It’s pretty clear that there are a few posters in this thread that are just criticizing PTI/IK just for the pure hatred they have. I do think there are several legitimate reasons for which PTI can be criticized but this is clearly not one of them. Anyone with basic knowledge of international trade would know that there is very little the government can do about the petrol price other than further subsidizing, which is not a viable option. Not one person bashing government here has provided a single solution or viable alternative for the oil price crisis other than mindless criticism, which again just shows their bias.

The only thing they can bring up is IK’s old tweets which were made at a time when tax on petroleum was at nearly 30% and the government has brought down to about 5%. This just confirms that PTI kept that promise.

These losers believe that IK destroyed the PK economy and apparently exports of 23bn and imports of 60bn wasn't destruction, apparently that was a success.

Long rant of a post but the thing is that Mamoon is right here based on recent trip to Pakistan.

If there was election today, PTI would get thoroughly smacked. And the military isn’t dumb. They will abandon them too

I fear this is correct. Even the Staunchest PTI supporters in the past ie Mubashar Luqman and Hamza Ali Abbasi have recently stated that they will not vote for PTI in the next election

IK is not paying to attention to economy - what did you wish him to do? Provide a detail answer.

Sufi research center - what’s wrong with that? How does that impact you or anyone? How one a research anything could be looked negatively? Isn’t Sufism part of Pak culture that can be promoted as tourism?

How has he promoted shirk? Explain, I don’t know anyone who has become malang since had become PM, do you?

He is a progressive leader, progressive mean, promoting and creating social net for the people of Pakistan, which he has.[/QUOTE]

He is promoting fairytales of Abdul Qadir Jillani such as AQJ walking on water, AQJ talking to fish, AQJ flying to Bokhara to save a falling devout, AQJ visiting the inside of the grave of one of his followers and answering the questions asked by angels and AQJ bringing people back from the dead. He has named a university after AQJ also. This is utter jahalat and nothing else.

Imran also visited the Jannati Darwaza - it is believed if you are able to pass through that door, you are guaranteed a place in Jannah. Since coming to power, Imran has only talked about India, Islamphobia and peers.

And no, Imran is not a progressive leader. He is a right-winger given his remarks on women, OBL and his refusal to pass anti-domestic violence and forced conversion bills.

It’s funny that for Pakistan you choose to use salaries for lowest unskilled minimum wage labour but for Hong Kong you choose to use salaries of workers in the construction industry which usually require specific skills.

Construction workers in Pakistan are definitely earning much more than the minimum wage of Rs 17,500/mth.

Construction industry in Hong Kong employs unskilled workers. Pakistanis form a massive part of this industry so the comparison is very fair.

That is fair if people of Pakistan oust the PTI government democratically than it’s their right.

The fact of the matter is no government could have handled the gasoline price issue as it is a worldwide crisis. Anyone arguing otherwise in this thread either does not understand international trade or is just acting dumb just out of hatred for PTI/IK.

Its hardly a revelation that govts become unpopular when inflation increases in a poor country. It would be a miracle if it was the other way round. But the fact is that underlying problems of an unproductive economy, low exports and high imports created over decades, takes years to solve. What the Nooras and PPP did was to loot and borrow.

For years, PTI supporters followed the lead of their false messiah and blamed PMLN/PPP for petrol price hikes.

Now that PTI has overseen the greatest petrol price hike in history of Pakistan, these cult-followers have suddenly become experts in global fuel supply & demand and pricing mechanisms.

What they fail to realize that it is not even about the price of the petrol - this will not make or break the government - the fact is that Imran and his government have failed to give any relief to the public over the last 3.5 years.

3.5 years is more than enough time period for a government to make an impact and prove its capability. The reality is that Imran as a PM and PTI as a government have performed well below expectations.

They have not delivered a fraction of what they promised and what was expected of them.

Imran Khan has been badly exposed as a novice and incompetent public administrator. Nearly all PTI ministers have proved to be out of their depth.

We have had climate change ministers claim on live television that COVID-19 is called “19” because it has 19 symptoms, while the minister for science and technology claimed that Pakistan sent Hubble telescope to space, even though the cost of Hubble in 1990 was greater than the entire budget of Pakistan’s space program today.

These are just two examples. I can go on and on and on, and there is a huge list of Imran embarrassing himself and his country with his goof-ups.

PTI supporters talk about economic revival, but Imran appoints a new finance minister every month, which clearly illustrates the lack of planning and vision of the government.

The new minister, who is on borrowed time from day one, reads from a different script than the previous one. He presents a new set of solutions and has a completely different take on the economic issues.

This shows a complete lack of consistency and proves the haphazard approach of this government - they have no idea what they are doing and are making up things as they go along, hoping that when you throw enough mud at all the wall, some of it will stick.

This government is hoping for a big fluke. They have no plan and no working manifesto.

The public is also sick and tired of all the excuses and justifications. The government is not willing to take any responsibility and keeps finding ways of blaming the previous governments for their own failures and shortcomings.

They have also tried to cash in on the pandemic and use it as a shield for their failures but no one is buying that either.

Imran has used India and Kashmir as a distraction but the public cannot care less for what happens in Kashmir when their own lives have turned into hell under this government.

The common man on the streets who can no longer afford to put food on the table for his family and now cannot even use his motorbike or car cannot give two hoots about what Modi is doing in Kashmir.

The poor and the middle class have never suffered like this under any previous government.

Colorful charts and diagrams, fudged numbers and propaganda on social media gets overseas Pakistanis excited but it doesn’t change the ground realities.

The other day, a security guard next to my house told us that if suicide wasn’t haraam in Islam, he would have killed himself because although he is now earning more than he did 3-4 years back, he was living a far better life back then.

He was able to feed his family, send his kids to school and buy them new clothes. Today, he can barely provide any of that because the price of almost every essential commodity has doubled if not tripled.

This is the reality of the poor people of Pakistan today. These are the people who are cursing and abusing Imran and his government every day.

Unfortunately, overseas Pakistanis who are worshipping their foreign passports and earning in dollars and pounds do not have exposure to these people.

Furthermore, the common man is always awakening to the reality that Imran has as much of a say in foreign policy and strategic affairs as the common man does. Everyone knows that this is the military’s domain, and Imran is at best “briefed” when they see fit.

Imran was tasked with administration and looking after the economy, and he has badly failed on that front.

Unless he and his government can perform a miracle between now and 2023, there is no way that they will secure majority vote, no chance at all.

Whether that is enough to oust the most incompetent government in history is debatable, but the silver lining is the fact that over the next 15-20 years if not less, PTI will be history.

We need to understand that PTI is artificial party with no roots. There is no succession plan. Imran is the glue that is holding it together but once he is gone, PTI will collapse.

All these opportunist, turncoat politicians who have jumped on the PTI bandwagon for personal gains will be absorbed by the parties that they came from or they will simply form their own small parties.

PTI will disintegrate after Imran. It will not remain in this shape and form and in the long run, it will not be able to compete with PMLN and PPP, whose family names will carry their legacy forever.

PTI supporters criticize family politics but family politics is what ensures long-term survival in Pakistan politics.

However, let’s not pretend that PTI didn’t have a crack at family politics. The extremely corrupt Pervez Khattak employed several members of his family in the KP government when he was CM, and Jahangir Tareen launched his son Ali Tareen in politics as well, but he chickened out after suffering a “Bud Tareen” humiliation in the by-elections.

After getting humiliated in politics, he used his daddy’s black money to invest in PSL and southern Punjab cricket, but thankfully that drama was short-lived as well.

History books will remember the PTI circus show as just a dark phase in the history of Pakistan politics and nothing more.

LOL - Had to, no choice because it is more of an elementary rant rather than providing a solution, sound more like why did PTI supporters ( if you go by the election of last year - the majority of Pakistan) complain about PML-N/PPP corruption and more tax on petrol prices than current PTI government.

Forget IK government, Answer this, and it would be sufficient enough to justify your rant, how would you expect PML-N or PPP to lower poverty, improve the quality of life of a common person and expect the economy to get better?

If it wasn't for PML-N and PPP government then IK wouldn't be a politician - If IK is at fault for the current crisis then history should be harsher on PML-N and PPP than on IK.

In case you missed it, this thread is specifically about fuel price and the involvement of government in the price hike. Not a single person including yourself have been able to provide any answer on how government is responsible for it when the taxes have already been lowered.

Now you are changing topic and ranting about the greater discussion on Pakistan’s overall economy. There are several threads on this subject already. Even in this thread, atleast I have mentioned several times that there are very legitimate reasons to criticize PTI government and having some incompetent people in the party and cabinet is definitely one of them. The issue over here is that Pakistan’s economy has not been great for atleast the last 10-15 years. You can’t just shy away from a $40B a year deficit over last many years under previous governments that was funded entirely by loans. That is the reality you and some other posters on this thread don’t have an answer for. There is no way of recovering from that damage without going through a tough time and the poor go through the worst of it, which is very unfortunate. Again, I understand your rant but please provide a solution as well which brings Pakistan’s economy to a booming stage without tightening the belt first.

It wasn't a reply, it was a rant with 'sound bites" - anyone from miles away could see it.

But, this person replied, a played out replied, "Imran has used India and Kashmir as a distraction but the public cannot care less for what happens in Kashmir when their own lives have turned into hell under this government." - if the general population does not care about that issue then how has it benefit IK?

Then he went on to say that it is a military Domain that decides foreign policy - that has been the case since the inception of Pakistan, he has not said anything new - same old repeated played out comment, But does IK believe everything he has said about foreign policies? Currently, Afghanistan, Pakistan dealing with the USA and China - hasn't it has been consistent since he decided to join the politics.

Like I've said, it is a rant filled with repeated sound bites with no solution and nothing more.

This - lengthy comment ignoring the history of suffering of Pakistan's economy at the hands of PML-N and PPP.

The writer of the lengthy rant made it seem as if PTI supporters aren't aware of IK handling of some issues.

Who is his audience? if it is PTI supporters then they have acknowledged every repeated rant the person has made, if it is an Indian audience - then who cares about them.

Anyone with a similar lengthy rant with similar content has not been able to provide a solution, answer to the legit question raised by PTI or any Pakistani who isn't being intellectually dishonest, but attempted to diverge with, "IK has not filled all the promise he has made - really, we did not know " or, this is my fav one, " Every PTI supporters has become expert in Oil", well who is stopping a person from becoming one by simply replying to whose who he believes are not expert aka PTI supporters?

Not another rant. Give it a rest, you support thugs and crooks. You backed the very people you claimed to hate- the maulvus in your support for Diesel or have you forgotten,.And you don't have the faintest idea how an exchange is determined and here you are pretending to be the fountain of all knowledge. Stop making a tool of yourself.

From what I understand, Government has cut most of the taxes from the price on petroleum products. Only 17rs in taxes on Rs 130 /liter rest is just cost of importing it. Short of Government artificially subsidizing the price, what else can be done?

Yes, once the prices of petroleum goes down on open markets, I do not see substantial decrease in the prices for average consumer. Government will use ti to recoup lost tax rupees.

About india ,
One example from my own experience- , i saw the trt interview of IK, he mentioned India thrice without any provocation from interviewer. One about covid, and 2 about the colonisation, & 3 about differences between afghan & indian mentality. All 3 instances, he spoke without being asked about India.
Fine, its his agenda , im cool with that but this is not the way you behave as diplomats or head of government,
Either he can militarily attack India straight out or crooked, no problem, thats cool.
but its basic common sense - if you talk negatively about unprovocated issues, you are downgrading your own respect. Modi atleast has common sense to keep quiet.

About his foreign policy yes his policy is very consistent, and the man hasnt started any wars thankfully, but when hina rabbani khar was fm, she had a voice, and was very approachable. This guy ik is irresponsible, and many times ive seen, he doesnt get any job done. Whether fatf, or us, or gulf , or economy - always clueless. On Taliban also there wasnt much need for him to play on front foot alone, without any plan b.

So therefore i agree with the rant, and request you to please , not to see ikka dukka points but understand why the points are being made in a macro sense, and please yaar, the principle is more important not the details, so yeah!

Don’t know what any of the above has to do with fuel prices lol all that comes across is that IK mentioned some harsh realities about India in an interview and hurt your feelings.

You do realize Pakistan was put in FATF near the end of PMLN government and has since met 26 of 27 requirements under PTI. Your other points regarding US and Gulf just shows that the Pak government has finally started to show some backbone and not fallen into the trap of entering other peoples wars.

It hurt my feelings, yes, but its not very smart for Pakistani cause either. Hes the top man, hes not supposed to get involved in unnecessary things.
Ulta, it will have sympathy effect.

I know that, fatf thing - 26 points, but they try again n again, but grey list eotd, and no great improvements. See his ministers , all of the fawad, sheikh rasheed, that firdaus, i think he had that anti india fellow who gives prize money on the tv shows - these people are really much worse than plmn. I can just sense it. I don’t remember all the details.

Backbone is temporary, you need foreign parties to invest & have a vision. The economy is not open in pakistan, there are collateral damages , loss of revenue , inflation & people will miss out.

The Nooras have found that its much more difficult to loot when in opposition than in govt. Its not mentioned on here but land worth billions from this mafia party and that couldnt be done from being in opposition.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested five men – including officials of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) -- and registered two separate cases against two oil marketing companies (OMCs) -- Fossil Energy Pvt Ltd and Askar Oil Services Pvt Ltd -- for their involvement in the fuel crisis of June 2020.

The agency rounded up Fossil Energy CEO Nadeem Butt, Ogra Member Gas Amir Naseem, Ogra Member Oil Abdullah Malik, Energy and Petroleum Ministry DG Oil Shafiullah Afridi and Assistant Director Oil Imran Abro.

The Ogra officials face charges of illegally issuing licences to OMCs.

The officials of the Energy and Petroleum Division are accused of issuing illegal quota of petroleum imports.

The FIA claimed that the OMCs, in connivance with Ogra, had set up a network of illegal petrol pumps across the country.

The suspects have allegedly caused a loss of billions of rupees to the national treasury by issuing OMCs illegal licences and import quotas and buying and selling petroleum imports in violation of the law.

The profits earned through this illegal way have been laundered out of the country, the FIA maintained.

The FIA has obtained physical remand of the arrested men and started interrogating them.

Read FIA cracks down on TLP’s social media accounts

A commission of inquiry formed in July last year to probe into a sudden shortage of fuel in the country had held the OMCs primarily responsible for the crisis, noting that they had deliberately stopped supplying petroleum products to pumps despite having considerable stocks at their disposal.

It said in its report that the OMCs had made from Rs6 to Rs8 billion during the June oil crisis by committing every illegality in “business as usual” manner.

It said as the OMCs would incur a substantial Inventory loss by free sale in June, they took the easy way out to simply slow down or dry out supplies, against all legal and moral norms.

“Consequently, the shortage of petrol began to surface across Pakistan and the filling stations gradually became dry, denying the public at large to reap the benefit of this substantial price cut.”

It said the OMCs, in contravention of licence conditions, slowed down the supply of petrol to their filling stations. On a lesser scale, the filling stations also held back on whatever stock they had in their tanks.

“All OMCs [other than the Pakistan State Oil (PSO) and Shell] proportionally held on to their stocks with knowledge of anticipated rise in prices. This has been proven during ground check of filling stations and records submitted by the OMCs with affidavits,” the report read.

It said the PSO, being a state-owned entity, could not follow this illegal suit due to the prevailing situation. Consequently, its market share in the period of shortage increased by nearly 20% and consequently, it sustained a loss of Rs7-8 billion in the process.

It is 1 dollars 48 cents now here in Canada. This is crazy.

Petrol prices cross Rs 130 per litre

Your blind hate towards the Indian government stops you from seeing that the price of crude oil has doubled to $80 a barrel over the last 6 months.

Dont you know that todays bombay petrol rate is 116 inr per litre out of which state vat is 30 rs, and central excise is 35 rs and dealer comission is 4 rs?
Fuel cost is 40 rs, rest is taxes.

I have holdings in commodities, cost of production has gone up but still overall todays inflation adjusted 80 dollar barrel was always the norm.

Central govt alone has accumulated 3.75 lakh crore from fuel tax past year. Its not a good situation for normal public , they are impacted quite hard.

As the exchange rate is 1 INR = 2.29 PKR, 70 in India would equal 160 in Pakistan.

So petrol is much more expensive in india?

If it’s 120 INR in india and 135ish PKR in Pakistan then Pakistanis have muc better deal?

There are a couple of reasons to put a large tax on fuel:

1) if fuel is not taxed, something else would have to be taxed for the government to generate revenues to meet its expenses. I agree that direct taxes (income taxes) are better than indirect taxes (vat etc) as indirect taxes are regressive, however there is a lot of tax evasion so the government has to rely on indirect taxes.

2) crude oil is imported, so it is better to tax something that is imported rather than tax something that is imported rather than taxing something domestically produced. With crude prices at $80 a barrel, India is importing about $100 billion of crude a year. If the government were to reduce taxes, fuel consumption would increase and our oil import bill would go up even more.

Haha your first 2 points are contradictory.
Think about it. You want tax revenue or you want to reduce fiscal deficit.

Secondly, govts can get revenue by investing in something like infra, entrepreneurship, effectively using natural resources, making special manufacturing zones, make world class manufacturing etc.
You cant tax the pizza delivery boy the same as SUV. Income tax collection atleast has parity and is a percentage figure.
Collecting tax on fuel is the easiest way to steal because its easiest cash in hand, with 0 efforts to collect, just increase the taxes, money is automatically in your pocket. Now when EV comes, they will increase electricity. Govt is clueless man, admit it.

Your blind hate towards the Indian government stops you from seeing that the price of crude oil has doubled to $80 a barrel over the last 6 months.
And in your blind bhakti for feku, you fail to see that we have also seen crude rising to $ 156 way back in 2008. Even then petrol never crossed INR 80 per litre.

And do you even have any idea how much central taxes are imposed by these dacoits?

There is nothing contradictory about my 2 points. I will try to explain them one more time (no replies after that):

1) Government needs revenues to operate. Independent India has historically relied on indirect taxes (sales tax, vat etc) to raise revenues rather than direct taxes. Govt may "by investing in something like infra, entrepreneurship, effectively using natural resources, making special manufacturing zones, make world class manufacturing etc." and it is being done, but govt cannot suddenly forsake its traditional sources of revenues.

2) Taxing something imported rather than something made at home has the added benefit of curbing consumption of the imported item.

I have no clue why you would think the above two rather easy to understand points as contradictory.

Nice try at cherry picking data. The $156 a barrel was a temporary spike, by Jan 2009 it was down to $54.

https://www.macrotrends.net/1369/crude-oil-price-history-chart

Taxing petrol is not something the BJP invented. In the 10 years of UPA government from 2004 to 2014, petrol prices increased by 102% (from 35.71 to 72.26). In contrast, in the 7 years since then they have increased by 38% (from 72.26 to 99.86).

https://www.mycarhelpline.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=808&Itemid=91

Anyway, as I have explained in my above post, taxing petrol is a good thing as it provides incentive for more efficient consumption of an imported good, and it also curbs the amount imported. There is a reason why Indians drive small cars with fuel efficient engines rather than the gas guzzlers that you see in the US.

No replies.

Can you explain why?

Shouldn’t Pakistan and india (or any other importing country) have a direct comparison between price of petrol?
Pakistan is caught in a debt cycle. The thing is, even the current prices of petrol in Pakistan is a lot less when compared to its neighbouring countries. The fact of the matter is Pakistan has been subsidising fuel and electricity for decades. Subsidies in themselves might relieve the cost burden for the common people, but the problem is, if you import something for 20$ and sell it to the people for 10$, the remaining 10$ will be a loss for the government. You keep the subsidies running for a long time and it will add a huge hole in the pocket of the government.

India realised this and deregulated the fuel prices and adjusted it according to the market prices in 2010.

"Deregulation of fuel prices ‘much needed’ reform, says Manmohan"

https://www.thehindu.com/news/natio...squo-reform-says-Manmohan/article16272135.ece

Now it's not something as easy as simply increasing the cost of fuel prices by cutting subsidies too. Pakistan's per capita income has stagnated in the last 15 or so years in comparison to its neighbours and that's because of the fact that it imports far more than it exports, among various other reasons. This leads to widening of the trade and budget deficits leading to an increase in government debt. This has resulted in the Pakistani currency getting devaluated a lot in the last decade. It also leads to an increase in inflation rate, jacking up the prices of commodities within the country. So if you simply cut all subsidies and increase the prices according to global prices, that will only lead to people buying less fuel which will result in lesser economic activity happening in the nation. It is about striking a fine balance so that the prices are not artificially too low that it punches a hole in the pocket of the govt every year or it is too high that it makes it unaffordable for the common people thereby negatively affecting the economic activity within the country.

I already posted about this in this thread. Read above.

Do you know that petrol excise amount this year is more than Income tax,
So the govt is basically running on fuel taxes.

But if your saying the govt wants to reduce oil import, what will happen to its own revenue ?
This is contradiction, no ?

38% hike despite getting some of the lowest ever crude prices as gift!

This regime is even bigger dacoit than I thought it was.

And lol, no petrol price isn't less than 100 now in India, it has crossed 120.

How can a person who doesn't even live in India would know this? Why would you reply now?

As imports fall with rising taxes rates, the total taxes on oil imports (the product of tax rates and quantity imported) is an inverted U shaped curve. At a particular tax rate this will be maximized. Of course, the government may not choose to maximize this due to taking into consideration the impact on the rest of the economy.

Again, i dont want to extra polate issues and expose you & my countries weaknesses so ill let it go.

The government on Thursday jacked up the prices of petroleum products by up to Rs8.14 per litre on the pretext that the earlier relief provided to the consumers had dented the fixed levy budget during the first quarter of fiscal year 2020-21 by Rs132.5 billion.

“In the previous petroleum prices [proposed by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority], a significant relief was provided to consumers. This has dented the Petroleum Levy budget of Rs152.5 billion July-September of 2021 as compared to Rs20 billion realised only,” the Finance Division said in a notification.

In a televised address to the nation on Wednesday, Prime Minister Imran Khan had hinted at an increase in the prices of fuel.

The new price of petrol is Rs145.82 per litre after an increase of Rs8.03 as compared with the previous Rs137.79. Similarly, high-speed diesel has risen by Rs8.14 to Rs142.62 per litre from Rs134.48.

The rate of kerosene oil has increased by Rs6.27 to Rs116.53 per litre as against Rs110.26, while that of light diesel oil has shot up to Rs114.07 per litre from Rs108.35.

On October 30, Premier Imran had turned down a proposal of Ogra for increasing fuel prices from November 1.

In the summary sent to the prime minister, Ogra had proposed to increase the price of petrol by Rs11.53 per litre, HSD by Rs8.49, kerosene oil by Rs6.29 and LDO by Rs5.72.

According to the notification, Prime Minister Imran Khan had not agreed with the proposals worked out by Ogra and the Finance Division and directed to maintain the prices as Notified on October 16. “Maintaining the Oct 16 petroleum prices [for first half of November] had some underlying concerns like cash flow issues due to short recovery of the cost.”

It said that the prices of petroleum products had been increased partially as compared to prices worked out by Ogra. “If the government had accepted Ogra’s recommendation, the new prices would have been much higher.

“In fact, the government has absorbed the bulk of the pressure after making adjustments in the sales tax and Petroleum Levy.”

The Finance Division stated that the government was cognisant of its responsibility to provide maximum relief to the consumers.

So many people here seem to be missing the point.

Imran Khan went around criticizing infrastructure development projects such as the metro train projects and other mass transportation projects undertaken by the previous government. Projects like this are so important because it gives people an alternative means of transportation when fuel prices go up.

Imran Khan's government has not worked on any infrastructure development projects and has been ill-prepared to deal with inflation and the rising costs.

PTI fans think when people criticize IK and his government for increasing prices they are targeting him on something which is out of his control but that is incorrect. The prices may be out of his control, measures to ensure such hikes don't impact the masses are still in his control and he did nothing to come up with counter-measures to prevent the people from suffering.

So many people here seem to be missing the point.

Imran Khan went around criticizing infrastructure development projects such as the metro train projects and other mass transportation projects undertaken by the previous government. Projects like this are so important because it gives people an alternative means of transportation when fuel prices go up.

https://www.dawn.com/news/1656135/uproar-in-india-too-over-petrol-prices-pakistan-still-cheapest-in-the-region-pm-imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday claimed that there was uproar in India as well over high petrol prices and Pakistan still had the cheapest petrol prices in the region.

"In India today, there is uproar as well [over petrol prices] and the petrol price per litre is Rs150 while it is Rs200 in Bangladesh. [On the other hand] it is the lowest in Pakistan at Rs146," the premier said, while addressing a public gathering in Attock after laying the foundation stone of a Maternal and Child Hospital.

He said that among the oil-importing countries, Pakistan had the lowest prices for petrol and diesel. The prime minister explained this was possible because the government had reduced its taxes and levies.

The premier said that inflation had occurred globally due to the Covid-19 pandemic causing various issues such as supply shortages, trade closure, lockdowns, reduced buying and selling.

"The biggest [impact] of what happened was that the oil price first decreased and now in the last three months it has doubled [...] when oil becomes expensive then everything becomes expensive."

Subsequently, freight costs also increased which caused prices of Pakistan's imports to rise as well such as oil, pulses, ghee (cooking oil) and palm oil, the prime minister said.

"When there was inflation in the whole world then obviously Pakistan is in this same world and not in the heavens so we also had to be affected. As a result, we fully tried and are still trying to protect our people from this inflation."

The prime minister's comments come the same day as the government increased petroleum prices by up to Rs8.14 per litre with immediate effect to ensure the revival of the International Monetary Fund programme.

The increase followed despite the prime minister's rejection on Saturday of a proposal by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority to increase petroleum prices and a decision to keep them unchanged for the next fortnight.

Last month, the government had earned the ire of its political rivals after it hiked the price of petrol by Rs10.49 per litre on Oct 16.

In his address today, the prime minister also commented on the hike in the price of sugar, saying it had "suddenly" reached Rs140 per kilogramme because three sugar mills in Sindh had been closed.

"When those three mills closed in Sindh, sugar [price] went up to Rs140. I had the reason investigated and it was found out that sugar mills here started hoarding.

"It was found out that since July, sugar mills had taken a stay order against [the relevant] law which is why our government couldn't do anything. Then it was found out that the Competition Commission had imposed a fine of Rs40 billion because they (the mills) had colluded to raise prices, but there was a stay order on that too," he said.

Noting that the mills had also taken a stay order against the Federal Board of Revenue levy, the premier directed officials to "immediately vacate this stay order", saying it was injustice with the people.

"Ask them today to take action on this; it is very easy for sugar mills to stop supply together and then prices increase and they make billions.

"When anyone takes steps against them then they take stay orders. So I will request for full proceedings against them," he added.

In the beginning, Prime Minister Imran congratulated Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar and Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid over the mother and child hospital project.

He said the country's far-flung areas especially needed such facilities, regretting that Pakistan was among the countries where a large number of women died during pregnancy.

"A country which cannot provide treatment to women during pregnancy, it is shameful for us," he said, adding that the government was setting up five mother and child hospitals which would be completed in 1-2 years.

At least there were some projects undertaken to provide people relief. What has this guy done? Zilch. Not one achievement to speak off.

Where is all the money going that is collected from the people? It's not being invested that's for sure. Filling someone's pockets for sure

aray!!! you are paying for it now, those projects were not "Cash and Carry". The idea was, "build now, fill my pockets, open an account on my driver's name, transfer the money out of Pakistan, then let Pakistani people pay for it and by the time they'll realize we will be in London sipping London's tea with sugar". - a text book scheme for any corrupt politician in 3rd world country.

Blaming the previous government for everything after you’ve been in power for 3 years is the epitome of incompetency.

Blaming the previous government for everything after you’ve been in power for 3 years is the epitome of incompetency.

Presenting facts regarding current crisis of Pakistan is not "epitome of incompetency", if not presented or hidden would be displaying intentional incompetency to make the previous corrupt government appear competent, which we all know is not the case.

Ignoring those facts to criticize current government is an "epitome of agenda".

One can criticize current government for not doing much to get hold on to inflation but ignoring the hold of corruption in every institution of Pakistan by the previous government and expecting it to disappear in 3 years when it is a 'generational approach' is rather incompetent approach of ingenuity.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has defended an increase in the prices of petroleum products saying that his government’s performance should be judged after the completion of five-year constitutional tenure in 2023.

He said this on Friday while addressing a public gathering in Punjab’s Attock district, where he laid the foundation stone of a maternal and child hospital.

The oil prices in Pakistan are lowest in the region, said the premier, adding that the sugar prices went up because the mills owners were involved in hoarding and evading legal action by securing stay orders from the courts.

PM Imran said top priority of his government was to uplift the downtrodden factions of the society and bring the provinces that were left behind in progress at par with others. “We would be successful if the weak people and provinces prosper after five years,” he added.

Reiterating that there will be no compromise on corruption of two families, the premier recalled that Pakistan was ahead of the other nations in the region during the first 30 years after independence.

“When I used to come back to Pakistan from India in the 1980s, I would feel that I have entered in a rich country from a poor country,” the PM recalled.

“Unfortunately, we were left behind in these 30 years… even Bangladesh went ahead in the last 30 years.”

“It will be decided after five years if poverty reduced in Pakistan... if we improved common man’s life and invested in the projects that would be beneficial for the next generations,” he remarked.

PM Imran said after a gap of 50 years, three mega dams were being built in the country by his government.

Calling the next 10 years “decade of dams”, the PM said that 10 new dams will be built in the next 10 years, saying the biggest issue in coming years would be of water.

For the first time in 50 years, he said, the government was thinking about the future generations instead of next elections. He said that exports, the main revenue source, were increasing.

PM Imran, against the claims of his opponents, said people of Khyber-Paktunkhwa elected his party into power for the second time “which was unprecedented”.

“People voted for PTI because lives of common people had changed,” said the premier.

Inflation

On rising food prices in the country, Prime Minister Imran said that the whole world was facing the issue of inflation as the crisis triggered by Covid-19 pandemic was unprecedented in the last 100 years.

First, he said, the oil prices took a nosedive but then they doubled in the last three months.

“Everything becomes expensive when oil prices go up,” he said, adding that freight trade got 350 per cent more expensive; pulses, ghee and other items’ prices also went up.

“When oil prices globally went up the same happened here; Pakistan is also a part of this world; it’s not in the sky,” PM Imran said. The government was trying its best to provide relief to masses, he said, adding that one litre petrol price was Rs250 in India; Rs200 in Bangladesh and Rs146 in Pakistan, which is the lowest in the oil-importing countries.

Sugar

The premier, while admitting the sudden hike in sugar prices, blamed the Sindh government for it, saying it closed down three sugar mills.

PM Imran said sugar mills in Punjab involved in hoarding of the sweetener and the provincial chief secretary was unable to take any action due to legal hurdles.

PM Imran directed Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar to immediately direct his law minister and provincial advocate general to challenge the stay orders so that actions could be taken against sugar hoarders.

Corruption has been inherent in our system for generations and not just during the regime of the previous government. Using corruption as an excuse for being incompetent makes literally zero sense considering one of the major election promises of Imran was to get rid of corruption within 90 days.

Previous governments have been able to undertake massive infrastructural projects despite of all the corruption that existed. These initiatives were criticized by the current government but I hope they are able to see the importance of such projects now because projects like these provide the common man relief when petrol prices go up. You need to take these sort of initiatives to counter inflation in order to provide alternative options to the people. This government has done nothing.

The PM is out of touch with realities and is living in a parallel world.

“Unfortunately, we were left behind in these 30 years… even Bangladesh went ahead in the last 30 years.”

India in the 1980s was a government controlled economy, like Pakistan today is with a military with outsize influence on the economy. Since then India has taken many steps to free its economy from government control and to provide a secure environment for FDI by Western multinationals. That is what IK should be trying to do but he won't because he is beholden to the military.

To progress economically Pakistan needs a leader like Hasina who has tamed her country's military. Unfortunately, the Pakistani leader who is most like Hasina is Nawaz and he has been driven out.

Ehsaas Programme. Sehat Card.

Finance Adviser Shaukat Tarin said on Sunday that the government will not able to provide relief to the public in case of an increase in fuel prices in the international market.

Talking to the media in Karachi, the finance adviser said the local petroleum prices were directly proportional to the prices in the global market.

"There is no relief in it. Whatever [price hike] comes will be passed through [to the people]," he said. According to Tarin, the government does not have space to provide "further relief" as he has already brought down sales tax on petrol from 17 per cent to 1.6 per cent.

It may be noted here that petroleum prices in Pakistan have touched an all-time high with petrol being sold at Rs146 per litre. This, coupled with the devaluation of the rupee against the US dollar, has resulted in a high inflation rate across Pakistan.

Tarin said there will be good news on talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) soon, adding that the IMF announcement will also put an end to speculative trading in the exchange market.

According to Tarin, as per the real effective exchange rate, the value of the Pakistan rupee against the dollar should be Rs166 but it was being manipulated by the "speculators".

Due to speculators, the rupee is devalued by Rs9 at least, he said, adding that he has asked the State Bank of Pakistan to take measures to end the speculative trading.

According to Tarin, the rupee is also being devalued due to the Afghans who are buying dollars from the market.

The finance adviser claimed that the Pakistani economy could witness more than five per cent growth during the current financial year. Tarin said the revenue had witnessed 36 per cent growth, adding that manufacturing growth was in double digits as well. Pakistan also reported bumper crops this year, he added.

We have 32pc growth in income tax, and our growth is all-round, including sales tax, income tax and customs. We will try to increase revenue target to 11pc from 9pc and then 14pc after it," Tarin said.

Speaking about the hike in the price of food items, the finance adviser said that the food prices were on the rise due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“The prices of food increased globally. Pakistan imports some important food items and our common citizens are affected due to the increase in prices.”

Tarin admitted that Pakistanis have poor purchasing power in contrast to other countries. “We are trying to fix it,” he added.

Like [MENTION=131701]Mamoon[/MENTION] has mentioned consistently since PTI came into power, there is hardly any accountability for the common person.

There is a difference between accepting the faults of the government that you support, and blindly lying and making idiotic claims, questioning the intentions of people getting their view across.

I can understand that a lot of die-hard PTI fans on this forum would hate to see Imran Khan's name get slandered, but they need to keep in mind that the situation has changed a lot over the last few years.

The evasiveness of the party regarding any accountability is just deplorable: bring up India wherever possible, make excuses regarding how the region's oil prices are expensive, and more.

If IK brings India into the conversation so much, I think it would be fair to acknowledge their own triumphs regarding investment and the fact that the Indian economy will dominate the world extensively in the coming decade.

The economic turmoil IK received upon being Prime Minister was difficult to overcome, yet, the situation has become far worse under his government.

Whether that boils down to COVID-19 or whatnot, the fact of the matter is that the government is accountable.

If I fail to live up to the expectations placed upon me in the professional climate, say I show up late to work. Do the people here think I can look my employer in the eye and say "yeah the traffic was a bit much today" or "it's just a few minutes" or "XYZ was late as well"?

Accountability matters.

The common person in Pakistan is struggling. When the general population is struggling to such an extent, any other party making promises (even if false) appears lucrative.

I personally don't believe that IK's PTI will get re-elected, there is virtually no chance.

What would be the ideal price per litre ?

£1.50 per litre of diesel in the UK right now, during peak lockdown it was £1.03 per litre.

The prices for a litre in PKR as of 15-Nov-2021.

Pakistan - 146
India - 246
Bangladesh - 181
Nepal - 199
Sri Lanka - 159
Bhutan- 202

https://www.globalpetrolprices.com/gasoline_prices/

Still the lowest in subcontinent.

This is such a poor way of looking at it.

The fact that this is so low despite price rise worldwide is ultimately detrimental to the Pakistani economy, not beneficial to it. The Pakistani government is accumulating debt every day it subsidises petrol and electricity in their country.

The prices of petroleum products are likely to go up again as the government on Monday announced increasing petroleum development levy (PDL) by Rs4 every month under an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Finance Adviser Shaukat Tarin, flanked by Finance Minister Hammad Azhar, briefed the media in Islamabad on the staff-level agreement reached with the IMF earlier today.

The Pakistani authorities and IMF had reached a staff-level agreement on policies and reforms needed to complete the sixth review under the EFF.

“We have to increase PDL by Rs4 every month to take it to Rs30,” said Tarin, adding that IMF had demanded Pakistan to raise a revenue of Rs600 billion through PDL.

The adviser said after prolonged negotiations with the international lender, IMF agreed to reduce the tax target of PDL to around Rs365 billion.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Imran Khan had rejected the Ministry of Finance's proposal seeking a hike in the prices of petroleum products in a bid to boost revenue.

It may be noted that petroleum prices in Pakistan have touched an all-time high with petrol being sold at Rs146 per litre.

Tarin, in today’s presser, said that IMF will release around $1 billion after Pakistan “successfully reached an agreement” with the international lender.

Also read: PM Imran rejects proposal to jack up petroleum prices

He said he personally believed in broadening the tax base instead of “tax pyramiding”. “Increasing electricity tariffs creates issues… it makes industrial sector uncompetitive and puts burden on poor people ,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Energy Minister Hammad Azhar said as part of the agreement with the IMF, the electricity tariffs will be increased after a few months.

“We have recently increased the base tariff and after a few months the increase will be much lower than the last one,” he added.

The minister said the agreement with the IMF will further stabilise the economy.

After the release of $1 billion, the total loan amount will still be $3 billion in over two years, which is far less than what had been agreed in May 2019 due to derailment of the programme, first in January 2020 and then in June this year.

However, the agreement has yet to be approved by the Executive Board of the IMF, which will take up Pakistan’s request only after the government implements all prior actions.

What isn’t being talked into the conversation is that a lunatic leader in Saudi Arabia is much to be blamed for the big rise in prices.

He has put the brakes on supply so this causes a global shortage and then a hike in prices.
He’s basically just holding everyone else hostage so that’s why we need to move away from fossil fuels as soon as possible, and the added benefit is we help the environment and keep the planet cleaner for future generations.

You can blame Imran for stalling the Pak economy but you can’t blame him for a rise in oil prices that’s not in his control.

All Pakistan Petrol Pump Dealers Association (APPPDA) has announced a nationwide strike on November 25 (Thursday) over the government’s “failure” to increase the dealers’ margin by 6%.

In a video statement, APPPDA General Secretary Nauman Butt stated that petrol will not be supplied to the pumps countrywide from 6am on November 25, including the government-run fuel stations.

It was said that petrol will only be supplied to ambulances and Rescue 1122 vehicles on Thursday.

Butt maintained that the strike would continue until the talks with the government are successful. He recalled that on November 5, the government had assured the petroleum association of the fulfillment of their demands by November 17 but none of them was accepted.

The spokesperson said that petrol will not be supplied to cities and regions of the country including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.

This is such a poor way of looking at it.

Because you assumed that i am in favor of the low price. I on this very thread have said the price should be higher. This chart is for the people complaining about petrol being too high.

The fact that this is so low despite price rise worldwide is ultimately detrimental to the Pakistani economy, not beneficial to it. The Pakistani government is accumulating debt every day it subsidises petrol and electricity in their country.

No need to convince me, I am all in favor of higher prices. Plenty of posters here though who feel they are entitled to cheap petrol. Their logic is that Pakistan is a poor country and they have low wages so they should get cheap petrol.

Panic gripped cities across the country on Wednesday as petroleum dealers were all set to go on a nationwide strike for an indefinite period starting today (Thursday) in protest against low profit margin while the Petroleum Division said that it had moved a summary to the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet (ECC) recommending an increase in the dealers’ share.

The division said that the federal cabinet would likely take a decision within the next 10 days, as the dealers are demanding an increase up to six per cent from the current three per cent in their margin.

A day earlier, the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) also suggested the ECC to increase the margin of petroleum dealers.

The Punjab government has asked the energy ministry to resolve the issue by holding talks with leaders of the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA).

According to the Petroleum Division, petrol stations owned by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) including Pakistan State Oil (PSO), Shell Pakistan, Total and Hascol will remain open on Thursday.

However, most petrol pumps in Karachi ran short of petrol Wednesday evening, causing severe hardships for commuters while in other cities, two and four wheelers could be seen in long queues at different petrol pumps.

PPDA Secretary Noman Butt said around 8,000 petrol stations across the country, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, will close at 6am from Thursday for an indefinite period.

“We are engaged with the Petroleum Division secretary, however, the government has yet to notify the upward revision in the profit margin of dealers,” he said, adding that they will not call off the strike till the issuance of an official notification.

Previously, he said, the Petroleum Division had ignored their demands, adding that they would not hold talks with the authorities till their profit margin was increased.

Addressing a news conference in Lahore on Wednesday, PPDA Information Secretary Khawaja Atif said that the government had left them no option but to close down their business as circumstances were not favourable.

“A recent study conducted by the government estimated that operational expenditures of petrol stations were Rs4.03 per litre and the government is giving Rs3.91 commission per litre on papers,” he said. “In fact, after deductions by the OMCs, Ogra, and petroleum ministry, dealers hardly get Rs3.01 per litre which is even less than our operational expenditures,” he maintained.

To a question during the conference, the PPDA office-bearers said: “We have decided to go on strike for an indefinite period. No petrol station will resume operation till acceptance of our demand as low-profit margin has made this business unviable.”

Also read: ECC may raise oil margins by up to 25%

The PPDA representatives disclosed that in every city 15-20% petrol stations are being run by the OMCs which would remain operational but they would be insufficient to cater to the huge demand. Atif pointed out that there were around 375 petrol stations supplying over three million litres of petrol daily. “A few dozen petrol stations cannot cater to this huge demand and will run out of fuel in a couple of hours.”

The information secretary said, “Earlier, we announced going on a strike from November 5 but Energy Minister Hammad Azhar had promised us to take up our issue in the ECC meeting. He sought 10-day time which lapsed on November 15. We waited for the government for 20 days. Now, the minister tweeted that the dealers’ commission has been settled, but it has not.”

The energy minister tweeted, “We are in touch with the PPDA. A summary regarding revision in their margin has already been tabled in the ECC and a decision will be taken in its next session.”

Meanwhile, the division said that oil tankers were dispatched to various regions to cater to the shortage of petrol, while all associations related to the oil sector had expressed their satisfaction over the arrangements made by the federal government.

In a letter written to the Petroleum Division, the Punjab government asked the federal government to resolve the issue.

“It has been reported by an intelligence agency that the PPDA is poised to observe a countrywide strike on November 25 over alleged government’s reluctance in increasing the dealers’ margin to 6%,” the letter stated. “The federal government may engage leaders of Petroleum Dealers Association into meaningful dialogue to resolve the subject issue.”

In a statement, Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) spokesperson said that the authority has taken serious notice of people/entities who are trying to disrupt oil supplies on the pretext of increase in dealers’ margin.

“All OMCs have been advised to ensure uninterrupted oil supplies at the retail outlets and Ogra enforcement teams are infield to ensure the same. Anyone involved in oil disruptions causing public inconvenience shall be dealt strictly in accordance with Ogra laws,” he added.

ISLAMABAD:

Federal Minister for Energy Hammad Azhar said on Thursday that petrol prices cannot be increased by Rs9 merely to benefit a few companies.

The minister’s remarks came after petroleum dealers went on a countrywide strike, which according to Hammad is a guise for their demands of price increases to be met.

“We will accept legitimate demands, but will not accept illegitimate ones,” he maintained, adding that it was not right to bother citizens.

The energy minister further stated that, at the request of the All Pakistan Petrol Pump Dealers Association (APPPDA), a summary of the increase in margin has already been submitted to the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet and that the decision will be made in the next meeting.

The minister reiterated that only legitimate demands will be accepted.

“We are aware of the difficulties faced by petrol pump owners; however, they should reconsider their decision in light of the plight of the people,” Hammad said.

A spokesperson for the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) stated that the authority is in touch with all companies to ensure the uninterrupted supply of petrol.

“OGRA is trying to work with all stakeholders to supply petroleum products,” they added.

On Tuesday the APPPDA announced a nationwide strike on November 25 (today) over the government’s “failure” to increase the dealers’ margin by 6%.

In a video statement, APPPDA General Secretary Nauman Butt stated that petrol will not be supplied to the pumps countrywide, from 6am on November 25, including the government-run fuel stations.

Butt maintained that the strike would continue until the talks with the government are successful.

Panic gripped cities across the country as petroleum dealers were all set to go on a nationwide strike, while the Petroleum Division said that it had moved a summary to the ECC recommending an increase in the dealers’ share.

The division said that the federal cabinet would likely make a decision within the next 10 days, as the dealers are demanding an increase of up to 6% from the current 3% in their margin.

According to the Petroleum Division, petrol stations owned by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) including Pakistan State Oil (PSO), Shell Pakistan, Total and Hascol will remain open on Thursday.
