Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Salam to all of you. My Aunt and cousin brother will be visiting London. During their trip they would like to pray in a Sunni mosque with seperate Women facilities near and around Central London.

As far as I know, East London Mosque (Whitechapel) and Regents Park mosque have such facilities. I would really appreciate if I get suggestions for a few more.

Many thanks.

Thanks brother. Do you have the addresses by any chance?

I thought all the mosques in west have separate men and women facilities for prayers? Certainly the case in Canada AFAIK. So in UK there are some mosques with only male facilities for prayers?

Musalla is not a Mosque so we should not call a Musalla as a Mosque.
OP should change the headline from Mosques to Musalla.

OP didnt call a mosque a musalla? So unsure what u asking him to change? He asked for mosques, I said there is a prayer room in soho, unsure whether there is a a room for women there or not

:)

OP is asking for a Mosque with women prayers facilities. Since all Mosques have women prayers facilities so it does not make sense to ask for a Mosque with women prayers facilities; all Mosques have such facilities.

So I think OP is asking for a Musalla with women prayers facilities because its possible there are Musallas which does not have women prayers facilities. Thats why I think OP should change the headline to use Musalla instead of Mosque. Otherwise this thread does not make sense.

Dear Brothers/Sisters, thanks for the replies.

@srh: Unlike Canada, in the UK not all mosques can accomodate women praying . As you are now aware of this, you can see why my headline makes sense. :)

Even when I was in Birmingham the mosques around my area didnt have such facilities.

I am shocked to hear this. Some questions:
  • Why some mosques in UK cannot accommodate women praying?
Are those mosques old buildings before which were converted into mosques? Or some of them are newly built in which case its very serious error of judgement to not have women praying facilities.
  • Did any level of government object on building such mosques which cannot accommodate women praying?

Answer to your first question:
Many mosques near and around London are old buildings which were converted. In London, unfortunately many of these mosques do not have enough adequate space to provide for female worshippers. For example, I have prayed in an extremly small terraced house near Euston, where I saw every single inch of space was used when people were praying Jummah.

Answer 2nd question:
As far as I know the provision for allowing female worshipers is upto the Mosque's Board of Trustees.

Ignore fatwa, Islamic texts permit entry of women to mosques, Muslim board to SC

Islamic texts do not prohibit entry of women into mosques and all fatwas that contradict this tenet should be ignored, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has told the Supreme Court in an affidavit.

The Muslim Personal Law Board said Muslim women were free to enter a mosque for prayers but underlined that it was not obligatory on women, unlike men, to offer Friday prayers in congregation.

The Board’s affidavit came on a petition filed by a Maharashtra-based Muslim couple who asked the top court to declare prohibition on entry of women into mosques as illegal and unconstitutional.

“.. such practices are not only repugnant to the basic dignity of a woman as an individual but is also violative of the fundamental rights,” the petition had said.

The petition argued that women could only offer prayers at mosques of the Jamaat-e-Islami and Mujahid denominations but were barred from mosques under the predominant Sunni denomination. And even if they are allowed, there are separate entrances and enclosures for them to worship.

The petition had drawn on the top court’s Sabarimala verdict that ruled that religion could not be used as cover to deny rights of worship to women.
