Cricket is one of the most popular games in India. But it is also the biggest catalyst for bringing out toxic misogyny among men. And the latest example of such toxicity followed the Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders match on Wednesday.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav were on the receiving end of social media trolling after CSK failed to chase down the target of 168 set by KKR at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

But while violent trolling and abuse of players (and even their wives and girlfriends) is a common reaction from so-called "fans" every time their favourite team loses a match, the hate now seems to be spreading to children and minors.

In a disturbing incident, while hundreds trolled Dhoni, some tweets and Facebook posts threatening Dhoni's five-year-old daughter also surfaced. And not just any threat, these were threats of rape and physical violence.

The threats allegedly appeared on Dhoni and his wife Sakshi's Instagram accounts following Wednesday's loss.

After Dhoni fell to Chakravarthy for 11 (12) in the 17th over, CSK still needed 39 off 21. Kedar Jadhav, on the other hand, struggled to middle the ball, scoring an unbeaten yet snail-paced 7 off 12.

The equation came down to CSK needing 26 in their final 6 deliveries. Ravindra Jadeja played a cameo in the match's final over bowled by Andre Russel but it was too little too late for CSK as KKR emerged winners by a mere 10 runs.

This is not the first time, of course, that a cricketer's family has had to face online abuse due to their poor performance on the pitch. Most recently, actress Anuskha Sharma, who is married to current Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli, was widely panned on social media for her husband's poor performance. Not just trolls, even commentator Sunil Gavaskar took a dig at Sharma, claiming that Kohli's poor performance was a result of lack of practice as the lockdown had meant he could only practice with Sharma.

A wonderful opportunity to set an example for future trolls by humiliating them in public. Hope they get caught somehow.

Oh dear lord! One can only imagine what poor families must be enduring on daily basis.

The article and highlighting this by giving Dhoni's daughter name is wrong imo.

How many trolls wrote these disgusting threats? It may only be a handful but highlighting this as news, will bring more attention to his daughter and more sick perverts peados could be alerted.

Blo*dy disgusting! I hope they find the trolls and send them to prison for a long time.

Threatening a 5 year old with rape is equivalent to actually raping.

There is a big peado network in india. somehow media never talks about it when they are busted.

Since they are dumb enough to post these from their social media accounts, India should set an example and track them down. Especially with the image and reputation surrounding India in regards to rape and sexual abuse.

We have gone so down the gutter during last few years that it beggars belief that were we really the same proud civilization that has given world so many scholars? So much wisdom?

And no, it's enough to say that these pests are miniscule in number and don't represent India. Whether we like it or not, they are amongst us.

These twitter threats should get no attention man.

Also I highly doubt anyone is so passionate about a t20 league to have such a reaction.

The security outside the farmhouse of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been enhanced as a precautionary measure following recent rape threats to his five-year-old daughter Ziva.

The alleged threats appeared on both Dhoni and his wife Sakshi's Instagram accounts after the Chennai-based franchise suffered a 10-run defeat at the hands of Dinesh Karthik's Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

Taking conizance of the issue, the Ranchi Police has become alert and stepped up the security at Dhoni's farmhouse where the player's wife and daughter are currently staying while the former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman is in United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the ongoing 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Reports on several media portals have claimed that besides increasing patrolling at Simaliya area, some police personnel in civil clothes have also been deployed outside Dhoni's farmhouse to keep a close watch on suspicious elements.

"Frequency of patrolling near Dhoni’s farmhouse has been increased. We are keeping a close watch on the movement of suspicious elements near the house. In addition to that a squad has also been kept reserve at a certain distance from his farmhouse to deal with any exigency,” the New Indian Express quoted Rural SP Naushad Alam as saying.

Earlier, the rape threats to Ziva created a massive outrage on social media, with people from all quarters denouncing such behaviour.

It is to be noted that the accounts of the trolls which gave threats of rape and physical violence to the little girl while venting out their frustration on Dhoni’s poor form on the field are being reported for the use of abusive behaviour against minors and women.

The incidents of venting their frustration on players after a loss by the fans is not unheard. Players' homes have been pelted with stones while their effigies and posters have also been burnt. However, the incident of targeting the daughter of a player has been unheard of before.

Recently, actress Anuskha Sharma was once again target for her husband's Virat Kohli's poor performance.

On a related note, CSK are currently standing at the sixth spot in the IPL 2020 points table with just two wins from seven matches. MS Dhoni's side will next lock horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad on October 13.

Police in Gujarat have detained a 16-year-old student for allegedly issuing threats to Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni’s minor daughter Ziva. The teenager has accepted to the offense.

“The class 12 student was detained for questioning in connection with a disgusting threat message that was posted on the Instagram account of Dhoni’s wife Sakshi Dhoni a few days back,” said Kutch (West) superintendent of police Saurabh Singh.

The boy, who was nabbed from Mundra, admitted he posted the threating message on the Instagram account of Dhoni’s wife after the IPL 2020 match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings earlier this week, police said.

According to PTI, Ranchi police had shared the information about the boy with the Kutch (West) police and asked them to confirm if he was the one who had posted the threat message, Singh said.

“We detained him for questioning after Ranchi police informed us that the accused hails from Mundra in Kutch district. We have confirmed that the boy is the same who posted the message. He will be handed over to Ranchi police,” the SP added.

Dhoni is currently in the UAE where he is leading CSK in the ongoing IPL.

Rape threats were made against Ziva following Chennai’s defeat to Kolkata following which security was beefed up at Dhoni’s Ranchi farmhouse.

“Frequency of patrolling near Dhoni’s farmhouse has been increased. We are keeping a close watch on the movement of suspicious elements near the house. In addition to that a squad has also been kept reserve at a certain distance from his farmhouse to deal with any exigency,” Rural SP Naushad Alam was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

Bring in new laws. Severely punish the insulters who i am sure can be tracked.

Put him behind the bars even though he is not 18. He should be named and shamed in public.

Just out of interest, why hasn't this been implemented already? India is supposed to be one of the leading nations when it comes to IT, seems there just isn't enough deterrent to stop paedos from polluting the web.

Some people do not deserve to be called a human being.
