"My efforts will be to help Pakistan cricket, not to create controversy of any kind" : Waqar Younis

Waqar Younis press conference:

"Its a new beginning, in the past few months a lot has changed, we have had new coaches, new structure, new setup and a new domestic structure has been introduced"

"Its very hot but I feel that the we have had a positive start [in the camp]; this is just the 2nd or 3rd day and we are emphasising on fitness and training as this is an area where we have been behind on in the past"

"We are working on fitness and working with the bowlers so all is going really well"

"The upcoming visit by Sri Lanka is a big plus for Pakistan and I pray that similarly other teams will visit Pakistan and our stadiums will be filled up again"

"When you work under the supervision of the Head Coach then you are directly working for him - its his domain and mindset which you follow"

"All coaching staff are helping hands and we will try our best to give as much support to Misbah as he needs so that Pakistan team can improve"

"I took this decision (to be bowling coach) as I wasn't mentally ready for another role to take on in the setup so this was best for me; Also I have a good chemistry with Misbah and I have a good understanding with him and this will help us in the future"

"As far as the question of coming into the Bowling Coach roles as a demotion is concerned, this whole thing about going up or going down the ladder is all a myth as the only goal for us is to improve Pakistan team; With that objective in mind, my being a Head Coach or not is not a big matter"

"If I can help some of the youngsters who are really exciting me, the ones who are in the pipeline, then this will be a very exciting time for us"

"Azhar Mahmood's done a great job for Pakistan in the past 3 years and he helped us win the Champions Trophy so dont forget that"

"We can't give enough credit to Azhar Mahmood for his work"

"Azhar Mahmood's a wonderful coach who is growing in stature and is still very young"

"As far as Shinwari's comments, that is his personal opinion and its not right that I comment on that but in my view, Azhar Mahmood is a 'growing' coach" [still growing as a coach]

[Question asked if he will work at grassroots level in Pakistan during off-season or like Mickey Arthur go back to Australia] "Why Mickey Arthur? Even I live in Australia and if I need to go back from time to time, I will do that"

"But I will try to do work with U19 and U16s but I am trying to move back to Pakistan and Inshallah in the next few months, you will see that I will be back and will have more time [to get involved]"

"There has been a lot more scrutiny on the Under-19 and Under-16 level so InshaAllah we will work together on this"

"My efforts will be to help Pakistan cricket and not to create controversy of any kind"

"I will try my best to make sure that Pakistan team and bowling attack perform as well they can and improve going forward"

Journo asking about his 2013 report about not having Ahmed Shehzad etc "Do you have to ask all controversial questions today? As far as Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal are concerned, I never wrote that they should be kept away from Pakistan team"

"Please correct yourself and read the report again"

"I did say that they have to play domestic cricket, they need to be groomed and need to comeback with a better mindset"

"They are feeling better, they are performing so why not? This is not my team nor is it Misbah's team - this is Pakistan's team - whoever performs better should win but they have to stay within the disciplinary bounds and parameters; This applies to Ahmed, Umar or any player"

"My TV commentary future is always there, I can go back into it later - there is no issue"

"We cannot take credit away from our bowlers as there have been good bowlers after Shoaib Akhtar and lets not forget Umar Gul who has performed well"

"As far as Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz's decision to leave Test cricket is concerned, its a personal thing as they feel that they dont want to play this format"

"This is all about grooming youngsters and what we will aim to do is to have a large pool of youngsters, with about 10 fast-bowlers so that we can prevent injury also as there are matches in summer, and players are playing in a lot of leagues also"

"There is a lot of talent in Pakistan and I see no reason why tomorrow some other talented player will rise and take the positions left vacant by Amir and Wahab"

"My role is simple and well-defined. I have done both roles in the past so I know about what is expected and the icing on the cake is that I also know about Misbah's mindset, as I have done all coaching alongside Misbah"

"There will always be differences in opinions but its our role to back and support Misbah; We all know that he is a very honest man and someone who is very passionate about the game"

"Who doesn't like success? so in short term we will look to win so that our confidence gets built"

"We have youngsters such as Hasnain with whom I have also worked a bit and he is still a little raw, and then you have Naseem Shah who is a very very good talent and I am sure he has a bright future; When it comes to experienced players we have Amir, Wahab and Shinwari;"

"My personal view is that Sarfaraz Ahmed is very experienced and Pakistan team needs him and he should definitely be captain in the shorter version, the rest is upto the Chairman as to how he feels"

"There are bowlers in the pipeline, some are in the camp and some are not as they are playing domestic cricket, we will also keep an eye on others such as Hasnain and Naseem Shah - I feel that in the next few months these bowlers will come on the scene"

"We will also see about spinners, I have seen one domestic game and no one stands out"

"Worldwide this experiment has been conducted successfully" [speaking about Misbah as Head Coach/CS]

"Misbah is the kind of personality that he has time to give for cricket, he has all the time for cricket"

"There are a lot of negative vibes on TV at the moment about the changes but we need to be positive"

"International and talented players from Sri Lanka are coming to Pakistan ; Such issues will happen and this is more than just an issue for the board but its a government level matter so we will have to wait a bit until these issues are sorted"

Question asked that you will need an assistant coach who can judge spinners "So you think I cant judge spin bowling? [Laughter] This is not the case, please remember that I have been Head Coach before and have worked in leagues worldwide, so I know how spinners operate and if you look at my records during my tenure as Head Coach, you will see names such as Yasir Shah, Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Hafeez, Abdur Rehman and many others"

"So I have got an eye for a spinner also, and I know what works in longer and shorter versions and who can do better in those formats"

"If they used to eat Biryani, they wont eat any more as we now have nutritionists available also"

"I always say that we must not mix up different eras - a lot of times we just talk about 1990s and talk about Wasim, Waqar and Shoaib but we have to realize that we have done well since then"

"We won the 2009 World Cup and Champions Trophy but yes consistency is missing but remember that consistency wasnt that great in 1990s also"

"PCB is trying to tackle this issue by reducing cricket and bringing in regional cricket, by trying to bring in international cricket as we all know that for last 10-11 years not many international cricket matches have taken place in Pakistan, that is a big factor in youngsters not playing cricket"

"PCB have taken an initiative to look at club cricket and school cricket, that was badly required and I'm glad it's happened"

If Naseem Shah has good 3 FC games there is outside chance he will start the Brisbane test in November as I heard Waqar is in awe of him.

I admire Waqar the player, and the skills he brought to the game. I don't admire Waqar the captain, Waqar the Coach, and specially Waqar as a person. He is demeaning to his fans, to his fellow colleagues and players. I don't know what good he will bring to the team now.

Was watching the press conference

Some journalists have no ethics, asking absurd questions

Waqar and no controversy? Lol, defying the man's history

Waqar's first stint as bowling coach was a good one with Umar Gull nailing his yorkers and Rana NAveed becoming lethal ... i do look forward to it ..

his people management skills on other hand are questionable at the least

Tough task ahead. Some media are already out to get him after what happened last time.

What will go in his favour though is that Misbah respects him a lot and he has the backing of Ehsan Mani, Imran Khan and Wasim Khan.

I want Waqar to get the best out of the younger guys like Hasnain, Naseem Shah, Musa and then get the likes of Hassan Ali back on track.

There are a few bowlers who are not giving their all, and Waqar needs to start to get them going again.

I have a feeling Waqar will act more as a head coach and misbah more as a chief selector. Either way, they both seem motivated for the job and hopefully they can make Pakistan more consistent at all levels of cricket.

Waqar's taking over as bowling coach saved me from going into deep depression due to Misbah's appointment.

Pakistan cannot ask for a better bowling coach, I'm very optimistic about the development of youngsters like Hasnain and Naseem Shah under him.

I also like him as a person, always talks sensibly ,liked the way he said some good things about Azhar.

The best person to be working with Naseem, Husnain and Shaheen. High expectations of Waqar.

Sensible comments as usual. He has the right intentions. It takes a man of character to put the past aside for a greater cause. Best of luck Waqar!

We have been free of controversy for a while now. Domestically the media picks up on every small matter to get tongues wagging. It is not as if Pak has any other Sport to talk about. If having a former great fast bowler as coach is the criteria to develop future stars then we're on to a winner here.

i do think in waqar stint we will see our bowling at high level.
waqar loves pacers and pace bowlers. i am optimistic that he will get best out of hasnain naseem and shaheen

Waqar Younis to miss out first Pakistan v Sri Lanka ODI

Lahore, 21 September 2019:

Pakistan bowling coach Waqar Younis will miss Pakistan’s first ODI against Sri Lanka in Karachi on 27 September as he will travel to Sydney to attend his daughter’s graduation ceremony.

Waqar will return in time for the second one-dayer on 29 September and join Pakistan men’s team in Karachi.

Waqar had conveyed the Pakistan Cricket Board about this commitment prior to his appointment as the bowling coach.

Ah, the great Waqar thereisnotalentinPakistan Younis. Looks like the PCB cannot live without you and neither can you. No matter what you claim you will create toxicity in Pakistan cricket again.
