NEWLY ELECTED Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan is “very, very keen” on the resumption of bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan, according to Ehsan Mani, the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“It’s still early days. My intention is to make Asian cricket stronger again, as it used to be. I don’t want to go into any detail at this stage but obviously, cricket between Pakistan and India is important to world cricket. So, that is one thing we will have to sit down, consider and address. Fortunately, we have a Prime Minister who is very, very keen on that,” Mani told The Indian Express on Monday.

India and Pakistan haven’t played any bilateral cricket since 2012-13, when Pakistan toured India for a short limited-overs series. The Indian government has refused to give permission for a bilateral series until “Pakistan stops cross-border terror”. The upcoming Asia Cup in September had to be shifted out of India because of Pakistan’s participation in the tournament. The UAE will now host the Asia Cup.

India and Pakistan, however, have been playing each other in ICC events. Pakistan came to India for the ICC World T20 in 2016.

Imran, the World Cup-winning Pakistan captain, has been a vocal advocate of cricketing ties between the two countries. On his India visit in 2015, as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman, Imran had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At the time, the PTI’s official Twitter handle had quoted him as saying: “When I told Modi that India & Pak should play cricket, he gave a smile, I can’t decipher that further.”

Khan had also been quoted in the media as saying: “We don’t want to be enemies forever. You have to think about the future. There are mutual cricketing heroes in both our countries. Like Wasim Akram is adored and loved in India, Sachin Tendulkar is a hero in Pakistan.”

On Monday, while appointing Mani as PCB chief, Khan posted on Twitter: “I have appointed Ehsan Mani as Chairman PCB. He brings vast and valuable experience to the job. He represented PCB in the ICC; was Treasurer ICC for 3 yrs and then headed the ICC for another 3 yrs.” The announcement followed Najam Sethi’s resignation from the post.

If he wants to make Asian cricket strong again, he’ll have to make big compromises against India. Asian cricket can’t be stronger without India’s support and general consensus. Bye bye dispute resolution committee.

Has he already accomplished the task of strengthening PCB that he's set higher goals for himself?

I am not sure what compromises we have to make when we are not even playing India.
Playing India, can bring lots of $$$ to PCB, that we are losing for so many years. One full bilateral home series with India can bring in more monies than what we can get from compensation claim. Plus, broadcast bidding will go higher as well.

Need of the hour for PCB is to generate more and more revenues so that we can build and stabilize our infrastructure, and make PSL more stronger.

Never mind "Asian Cricket". Your job is to make Pakistani Cricket strong and powerful.

Ehsan Mani isnt a fool like Nazam Sethi who will waste a huge sum of money for a lost cause just to show that he is fighting for Pakistan Cricket's right. Infact, what he has done is that he has even wiped out the possibilites of an INDO PAK SERIES even if the Indian govt. allows in future as BCCI will return the favour by ditching them.

Asian cricket is doing quite well barring, maybe, Sri Lanka (that too financially)

I want Mani to sort out Pakistan domestic cricket as there are too many tournaments and most are organised at the last minute without much thought.

I want him to make the media department more professional and clear out some of the people in there who are doing very little yet taking healthy salaries.

I want Mani to improve the NCA and ensure the best coaches are working there and not those coaches who are just there to fill a role just because they are mates with PCB officials.

a PCB president can never in their wildest dreams make Asian cricket stronger..its only possible for cricketing superpower India/BCCI

sensible comments from wise man..
Stronger Asian cricket means regular series between asian teams, this means regular matches with india/sl/bangladesh. What else you want?

Domestic cricket and organising much needed U-19's and A tours to countries like Aus, Eng, SA and NZ should be the priority.

Should have appointed someone younger. These dinosaurs are the ones that ruined our cricket in the 90s pure neglect.

Islamabad: Prime Minister Imran Khan has asked Ehsan Mani, his pick for Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman’s post, to utilise his experience and energies and bring Pakistan’s cricket grounds back to life.

According to sources, the former International Cricket Council (ICC) president assured Khan that, if elected to the top post of national cricket board, he would try his utmost to act as per his desire and direction.

Khan also asked him to convince the world that times have changed and Pakistan is now safe for international teams to play.

Mani told the prime minister that he was making contact with other members of the governing board of PCB and hoped that all members of the board would support him in the election.

Imran hoped that under his leadership, all decisions in the PCB would be made on merit.

On Monday, following the resignation of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi, Khan had nominated former ICC head Mani as the board’s new chairman.

In his tweet, he said that he has appointed Mani as Chairman PCB as he brings vast and valuable experience to the job: “I have appointed Ehsan Mani as Chairman PCB. He brings vast and valuable experience to the job. He represented PCB in the ICC; was Treasurer ICC for 3 yrs and then headed the ICC for another 3 yrs.”

The prime minister said: “We will follow the set procedure which entails my nominating him on the PCB Board of Governors. He may then contest elections for the position of PCB Chairman.”

Mani was introduced to the cricketing world back in 1989 as the PCB’s representative to the ICC. Hailing from Rawalpindi, Mani moved to the UK after completing his graduation from Lahore. His financial background attracted the PCB, and his meteoric ascent since to the upper echelons of cricket administration has gone almost unnoticed.

His paper on the sharing of World Cup revenues had a major impact on the financial arrangements of the ICC and its members. He played a key role in the organisation of the 1996 World Cup, and has also served on the Asian Cricket Council.

When are we going to receive his first briefing on functional issues & implementation of future plans? He is the chosen one and surely PM didn't recall his name out of thin air, after previous Chairman resigned all of a sudden :) He had enough time to do his homework on strategy, action plan & road map - where is that? I haven't seen PP posting anything from other media sources either, apart from this picture.

He has not been formally appointed Chairman of PCB. It will be presumptuous and in bad-taste to make any policy statement.

Dubai: Four key officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) met here for more than an hour after the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) board meeting.

The meeting, which was supposed to have discussed the bilateral series between India and Pakistan, was attended by Amitabh Chaudhary - BCCI acting secretary, Rahul Johri - BCCI CEO, Ehsan Mani - the new PCB chairman and the PCB COO Shubhan Ahmed.

Both parties remained silent on the outcome of the meeting and whether any compromise formula was reached ahead of the ICC's dispute committee hearing to be held here early next month.

There was no discussion about resumption of ties between the two countries in the Board meeting, which mainly discussed the distribution of the ACC funds to the members.

The meeting was first time chaired by Ehsan Mani after being made the PCB chief by the Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Interestingly, none of the Board members raised issue on scheduling of the Asia Cup matches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi even as the captains of the Pakistan and Bangladesh teams did show their displeasure over back-to back matches.

Atit Marshal, the outgoing chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) introduced their new president Azizullah Fazli at the Board meeting.

The date for the next ACC meeting in November is yet to be decided. It will be held in Lahore.
