First of all I would like to thank Uzair for introducing me to Scat’s world … many thanks bro, it has been an amazing experience :19:

That very moment when I held my first Scat, I knew I had just owned something special … All those feelings about Scat’s awesomeness came true when I used it in nets and finally in the match. Still, I kept on challenging my own observation/feeling about Scat by asking opinions from other players (some of them ex-pro) and later my coach Mudassar Nazar (who’s comments on Scat were: ‘Unreal’) but I couldn’t find a single negative comment from anywhere. My height of delight was when opposition guys came to me during drinks break and asked about my bat, they were amazed by its sound and performance … that 87 on 60 odd balls, would always be a special innings for me !

I was sure that I won’t be using my CA12000 TRD for good now; hence I sold it, and got very good deal on it. Discount on second Scat by JM and CA sold on very good price, it was a no brainer for me, I had to get another Scat. People are skeptical on getting two exact same bats, but in my case Scat suited my batting style perfectly (it’s balance actually improved my technique) so I ordered another Scat Series # 1 (same specs as 1st one). Idea was to have a backup and a seamless transition between both bats. Since I was in no hurry, I told JM to take as much time he needed to prepare another gem for me. I actually said to him if he can make even better bat, I quote his exact words:

I have all your photos, specifications and payment in place, thank you. I must say that your bat does look quite exceptional and will be a challenge to reproduce, however I am very confident with the new stocks just arriving and I will unpack tomorrow that a suitable cleft can be found and reserved for you. You will quite literally be the first cab of the rank, and I know there is some excellent timber within the consignment

(Upon his request I had sent him photos of my 1st Scat)

Knowing that I’ll be the first cab of the rank for excellent timber choice within the new consignment, was already something special for me. It took JM about 3 weeks to finally make the bat, but knowing that he had picked an amazing piece for me I was very patient and finally I received my second Scat this week :)

After receiving the bat, I sent an email to JM for acknowledging the receipt … and this was his reply:

Thank you for letting me know you have received your bat and it is to your liking. It is a bat that has a very special performance qualities and the one of the two best bats of the season for me. The very first pick of new stock is something very special to me and I am very confident you will appreciate this when you have a hit in the nets

JM’s reply has left me speechless, he is such a nice and kind person who loves his art … I feel bad too that his art is in danger of diminishing !

My first observation was that Scat # 2 probably has bigger profile and bigger edges … but it still felt incredibly light as if I was holding my Scat # 1. After side by side comparison, it was confirmed that indeed it had bigger profile & edges. Producing two similar handmade bats (pick and feel vise) must be something extra ordinary … JM undoubtedly is the master of his art !

Mallet and Ping tests have shown phenomenal response already … and I know it’s only going to be better & better from here. I have just started the bat preparation process; oiling and later mallet knocking. I can feel that Big Brother Scat is going to be absolutely amazing and lot better than it’s young brother. Here are some side by side high resolution pictures of both Scats; as you can see I have been middling quite a lot with Scat # 1 … I can’t wait to see Big Scat in action too, but I know I have to be patient, it’s so worth it :D

Amazing Kashif bhai, impressive! :14:

Both are equally good but due to natural instinct Big Screaming Cat looks better because its new :))

I hope both serve you well, did you get a chance to test the ping of second one?

One question when you hold newer Screaming Cat after holding older one do you feel any difference any transition ?

Thanks Bro :)

Its ping is amazing ... I can safely say it’s better than Scat # 1 when it wasn't knocked; after knocking its going to be an absolute belter :)

New Scat feels even better and bit lighter than older Scat, despite it has only 1 grip. This was also verified by my ex-pro cricketer friend; I'll add another grip and sure it'll improve further :)

Haha :))

Thats great to hear bhai!:)

It is quite an art to have two of same bats to be honest.

Seems like Julian made quite a few bats in between your old Screaming Cat has registration number of 80 and newer one has 140!

Class bats super .. amazing but why no toe guards dude , you are ruining such master pieces without using toe guards :)

Yep thas true, JM has made quite few bats .. small correction 1st one is 78 :)

good bats and profile of these bats is same as Slazenger hyperblade

True; but I am quite confident that in performace they are far ahead of Slazenger :)

I concur this :D

By the look of 1st Scat's toe, I am with you guys, but I am not sure if local store can do it ... I'll check it :)

Awesome stuff KashifJ! Just had a fleeting glance; will be back with more praise soon :D

amazing buy once again. i know it looks ugly, but shoe goo works alot better then toe guards.

where is your thruxton in the line up now? how did the transition from a thruxton to this go? ps - im a big thruxton user.

awesome bats hope this playes even better for you, and et shoe goo instead stops the water from getting in, lasts longer.

I totally agree, I need to protect the toe, I am not too sure if I'll find shoe goo locally.

Thruxton is no. 3 now; transition between Thurxton to Scat was seemless to me, I didn't struggle at all. In fact, I am doing nets with Thruxton these days and Scat is for match days, totally seemless to me.

Great bat/bats, great review.

Thanks bro ... I'll try to keep you guys updated as it goes

I am looking forward to it too; based on what I have seen and what JM said, it has to be an amazing bat. I totally agree, I need shoe goo ... ASAP

Also doesn't it prevents indentation on the toe from crease tapping?

Roger that bro :D

yaar any mochi will have a version of shoe goo. so you didnt want to take a chance with a different profile?

Yep thas true :))

Series # 1 suited me so well that I stuck to it; was't sure about other profile, 'What if' .... was always in my mind and I didnt want to risk getting a very expensive bat and not use it :)

If I manage to visit JM, may be I'll check another shape :) ... but thats just too remote :)

I will have try series 1 next year - my thruxton is quite amazing at the moment

both are beautiful, beautiful bats, I hope they go well for you.

IMO Julian's bats are the best, pics cant express balance & performance.

Thanks bro ... I fully agree, photos don't do justice at all. Scat has been doing extremely well for me :)

I agree with you.

I have tried many brands bats out there and also have tried Julian's fellows bats (Andrew Kember, Tim Keeley, James Laver etc) and in my opinion Julian is best of lot, his bats are exceptional. I'm not saying other bats are not good, they are awesome too but Julian gets 'bonus marks' even if otherre perfect.

That's my take, they are brilliant bats. Pictures really don't do justice.

Hi Kashif,

This is my first post in this forum.

Really impressed with these top notch bats you have!

I am planning on buying one as well ( Series 1) but the weight I want is 2.7/ 8.

Could you please confirm the exact weights of both bats you have with one grip?

Thank you!

Welcome to PakPassion mad_abt_cricket, I hope you enjoy your stay here :).

Oh Screaming Cat will never let you down :D

I haven't had the chance to weight the new Scat but I weighed the old Scat and my NB ... the scale was showing 2.11 & 2.9 lbz respectively. I am very doubtful on scale's accuracy, both bats way feel much lighter then what scale suggested .. this was also confirmed by friends who had the chance to feel the bat. I'll try to get hold of a accurate scale and weigh all of them ... Anyways, balance and pickup of both Scats is awesome, even if they are around 2.10, I don't feel them heavy at all

i think the toe on your bat is starting feather, you need to keep an eye on it.

Agree, I am on it bro :)

Both bats look very nice especially the newer one.

Again lookwise they don't look very nice or $700 bat!

I agree your old Screaming Cat toe will die as other said use Shoe Goo

Not sure what exactly is missing from 'Looks' point of view ... Both bats are really beautiful; this is not only my opinion but people who have seen them too !

In any case, I would prefer a performing bat rather than just a good looking bat; and Scat delivers that performance, I have experienced it already :)

I am taking care of toe soon ... unfortunately I had some matches where ground/wicket had lot of due (proper English conditions); that really affected the toe

I hope I didn't offend you Silencer with my reply, my question about looks was quite literal actually ... I have heard from CD that JM's bat shapes have been criticized on looks often, but not exactly sure why. I think bat shapes or beauties as we can say differ in each model/manufacturer, one bat shape can be beautiful for someone and not so for others :)

Julian Millichamp is a genius. Brilliant hand crafted bats.

Kashif,

I just moved to Dubai myself and am planning to join the Piri Piri league. I had a couple of questions for you:

1) Did you consider the L&W when deciding on a cricket bat? What made you go for the Scat?
2) For the ICC grounds, which Scat/L&W would you recommend for an opener? There are different pitches (the slow, low ones and the bouncy ones) and we play on both so I need an all round bat.

Thanks in advance

About 2 years ago Piri Piri League inaugurated at Sevens, next year they moved to even further out of the city due to cost, I highly doubt Piri Piri would be played at ICC :D

1) No I didn’t consider L&W, I had Newbery Thruxton before so I wanted something different and Scat was perfect for what I need
2) I have played a lot at ICC (all types of wickets: slow, low and the bouncy ones), I found Scat perfect for all those wickets, but I ABSOLUTELY loved playing on fast and bouncy wickets with Scat, it was just a treat to play with Scat. Btw I used to open as well, Scat really suited my batting style, new cherry used to just fly like a tracer bullet

You have to do your research and decide what you need, Scat comes with a price tag and it was the best decision I made, I hardly use my Newbery since I got my Scat. I live in Melbourne now, fast and bouncy wickets in Australia are just perfect playground for Scat :p

Mlapse i am also based in Dubai, don't think piri piri league exist any more. I have L&W, Scat and almost all top brands but to be honest my CA TRD and couple of CA 15K ltd editions are better performing bats than all these top brands, only problem is with the handles as handles are not top quality. If interested, I can help you if you are looking to buy any new bat.

Thanks Shoab68 for the offer! Appreciate it.

I am really keen on the L&W or the Scat. I bought a GM, GN, Kook and Slaz in the last 3-4 years and somehow they don't suit me very much. They are good bats but the pickup is never just right and the ping is never exactly what I'm looking for.

For these reasons, I have decided to buy a custom bat where I can speak to the person and tell them what I'm looking for - then if the bat doesn't match up at least I have peace of mind that these top manufacturers will either fix it or replace it.

I'd rather not keep collecting bats and go with one :)

So of the Scat and L&W which do you prefer? I am looking to choose between Scat 3 series and the L&W Reserve. As I mentioned in my other post I'm looking for a mid to low middle (not too low) and a very good pickup (think of the Icon) while still feeling weighty (but not too much that I can't play my horizontal bat shots.

I'll send you another PM about playing cricket in Dubai.

Thanks

Thanks Shoab68 I will get in touch.

IN the meantime, could you give me your thoughts on the scat series 3 vs L&W reserve?

Thanks

I have 2 L&W Signature and one SCAT Professional series 1. To be honest, considering the huge amount of money i paid for these bats i found these bats good but not exceptional and will never buy them in future. I have bought at least 75% of the top brands available in the market but i would still rate my CA TRD the best.

Still if you are stick with either a L&W Reserve or SCAT, my vote is for L&W. Give me a buzz and i would definitely give you some valuable tips and will let you know about the best bat which i purchased recently. My recent purchase is by far the best bat in my collection.
