Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi said on Thursday that the nation needs to play its part in making the upcoming World XI Azadi Tournament a success.

"Everyone, especially the media, needs to play their part in making this series a success for our own national interest," Sethi said, speaking at the unveiling of the tournament logo.

"The media holds a lot of power, but often in the rush to produce breaking news you are not careful and misreport things, turning it into fake news," he said, cautioning the media to report responsibly as "whatever our media puts out there will be quoted by the international media"
He added: "The media has a grip over the hearts and minds of the nation. Whatever you say, the people believe to be true, so report facts correctly."

Sethi also stressed that "irresponsible reporting" may affect
Sri Lanka's decision to visit Pakistan for a T20 match and the subsequent
arrival of West Indies for a three-match series next month.

"Both teams' arrival is subject to the success of this tournament," Sethi explained.
"International players visiting the country have requested that they be sanitised," Sethi stated. "We have agreed to this."

"However, reporters wishing to get in touch with these players should get in touch with us and we will make it happen instead of trying to speak to them directly," he said. However, "Some players have also said that they do not want to speak to the media at all, and their wishes will be respected as well."

PCB's plan for bringing cricket to Karachi

While discussing what he described as "the heartburn" being felt in Karachi due to no matches being played there, Sethi said, "I know people are not happy that there are no matches being played in Karachi, especially after the improved security situation... However the international community needs more reassurance and we have a plan for that."

"We will take the international security team assessing the [security] situation in Lahore to Karachi as well and ask for their recommendations. After this, with the Sindh chief minister's cooperation, we will work on a security plan for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and conduct four of those matches in Karachi."

"Once we have successfully conducted PSL matches in Karachi, we will be in the position to convince international teams to play in Karachi," he explained.

"At most, it will just be a two year struggle for us, after which we will be able to host international tournaments as regularly as any other cricketing nation," he said.

Players from England, New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe will be visiting Pakistan as part of the World XI squad for a three-match T20 series this month.

finally finally they get it. Get the very security people who provide the recommendations on board and work with them instead of working against them..

Might also help if some "Sources" in PCB stop talking to journos to give them exclusives! Think Sethi really needs to clamp down on that

The leak brigade in PCB needs to sort itself out first.

Also the freebie brigade is being well looked after by PCB and it seems that the most important thing for PCB is to keep them happy.

PCB invites Imran, 17 ex-players for World XI games

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has invited eighteen former Test cricketers including former captain-turned-politician Imran Khan, to watch the Independence Cup matches between Pakistan and the World XI, chairman PCB Najam Sethi disclosed during a press conference held here on Thursday.

Imran has remained a strong critic of Sethi during the past, but when Sethi was re-elected as the PCB chairman last month, surprisingly no statement was issued by the World Cup winning skipper. In fact, the cricketing circles at one time were expecting Imran to file a petition against Sethi’s PCB elections, but no such move came to fore.

And now the PCB has invited Imran — who is undoubtedly one of the greatest players to have played the game — to watch the World XI games which is indeed a fine gesture of the board’s part.

Moreover, the PCB chairman said that he had invited three ex-captains — Misbah-ul-Haq, Younus Khan and Shahid Afridi — all of whom announced their retirements from international cricket this year, for their grand farewell ceremony set to be held on Sept 14 in Lahore — the rest day in between the Independence Cup matches .

“I have personally talked to Misbah, Younus and Afridi and all had agreed. However, now the rumours are that Afridi may not come. But I am very hopeful that all the three stalwarts will attend the farewell ceremony,” Sethi said.

IT's just the statement to fool the karachi public, same things were said by najam sethi & PCB, just before the visit of zimbabwe team and before this year's psl final....sri lankan team were attacked in lahore and now in the eyes of PCB, lahore is more secure than any other city in pakistan even though lot of bomb blasts occurred in last couple of years. For pcb rawalpindi, multan and karachi are like SOUTELLEY's, bus lahore hi apna hai.

Karachi cannot be trusted because it has incompent government. We can't risk screwing up again. They need to get their house in order before they get any matches.

I thought it was Punjab government which screwed up last time. I don't see what Karachi has got to prove here

Was this asked in the recent PP interview with Sethi?

Imran Khan turns down PCB invitation to watch World XI series

Cricketer turned politician Imran Khan has ignored an invitation from Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, Najam Sethi, to attend a game between the national team and World XI at the Gaddafi stadium this week.

Imran left on a five-day visit to the United Kingdom as the World XI is due to reach Lahore in the wee hours of Monday for the three T20 international matches which are the first in Pakistan with the support of the ICC since terrorists attacked the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in March 2009.

Imran, who heads the main opposition party, is expected to only return to Pakistan on the day the World XI ends its tour.

Sethi had announced at a recent press conference that he had invited 17 former captains and stalwarts for the series including Imran and Javed Miandad.

Imran has been a staunch critic of Sethi who was caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab when the last general elections were held.

It is not known how many of these former captains or stalwarts will attend the matches although Pakistan's discarded off-spinner, Saeed Ajmal, complained on a television channel that he had been sent no invitation for the matches.

I dont think karachi is quite ready to host anything just yet especially with the probelms with the MQM and revelations that they have been covorting with a foreign enemy. That enemy has the capability to hurt us in karachi. At this moment in time lahore seems the right place to host while shahbaz sharif is in charge. The security environment in karachi is improving and I'm sure once all the proper precautions have been taken and security has been properly assessed, some matches will be played there. I believe some PSL matches may happen in karachi so that will be a good opportunity to assess the situation.

If the PSL matches don't happen in Karachi then I don't think anyone can make excuses for the Lahore bias anymore
