Really tough but I've boiled my list down to:

Goalkeeper. Buffon

10. Henry
9. van Basten
8. Hagi
7. Baggio
6. Ronaldinho
5. Cristiano Ronaldo, CR7
4. Zidane
3. Real Ronaldo, R9
2. Messi
1. Maradona

Doesn't necessarily have to be in order but Maradona still the greatest for me.

Impressive list.

A couple of names I would add are Ruud Gullit, Bergkamp, Baresi, Maldini, Lothar Matthaus.

Gianluigi Buffon (GK)
Philipp Lahm
Roberto Carlos
Roberto Ayala
Fabio Cannavaro
Luis Figo
Zinedine Zidane (C)
Lionel Messi
Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo (Brazil)
Ronaldinho.

picking 10 "best" footballers is a pointless exercise. It will include all attackers, as the opening poster's list does. But attackers cannot function without a midfield or defense. that's why picking an actual team is a far more useful exercise.

------------------buffon----------------------

dani alves --------puyol-----maldini------roberto carlos

------------------viera---------------------

---------xavi-----------------iniesta-------

ronaldinho---------messi-------c. ronaldo

bench: rijkaard, gullit, scholes, claude makelele, thierry henry, ronaldo (brazil), romario

coach: pep guardiola

good luck beating that lot!

Updated: Pick your best team

I was actually only going to pick the top 4 or 5 players but really wanted to include some others. However, I can understand if you're picking 11, then its probably just better to make a "best football team". So here is my updated best XI from my lifetime.

Formation of 4,3,3.

1. Buffon
2. Maldini
3. Kohler
4. Baresi
5. Thuram
6. Maradona
7. Zidane
8. Ronaldinho
9. Real Ronaldo, R9
10. Messi
11. Ronaldo, CR7

For me the AC Milan of 1991-1992 was the greatest team ever to grace the field of football. They literally won everything and had great names like Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gulit, Marco Van Basten, Franco Baresi, Carlo Ancelotti etc in them and above all they had a great manager like Fabio Capello. I have never seen any team as potent as them. Certainly way ahead then Barcelona 2011 & 2015, Terrible winning Man city and Man united squads or infact better than any else team that ever played the game of football.

The second best team could be Barcelona of 2008-09 season under Pep Guardiolo. During Peps first season in charge of them.

Here is my XI:

Buffon (GK)
Roberto Carlos
Maldini
Cafu
Sergio Ramos
Maradona
Zidane
Messi
Pele (C)
Ronaldo (Portugal)
Ronaldo (Brazil)

This was a tough one. I had to leave many legendary players like Zidane, Pirlo, Ronaldinho, Beckham etc.

Bro you have too many strikers in your side. You should have chosen pirlo, xavi, Zidane etc for the mid field stability.

CM: Steven Gerrard
