Been speaking to some people and they introduced me to the idea of a 'lab grown' diamond.

So here's my question, would you buy your loved one a normal diamond or a lab grown one?

"Lab Grown Diamonds have grown in popularity over the past several years and are a viable choice when shopping for a diamond engagement ring. However, the idea might be met with some skepticism. A diamond that is considered ‘synthetic’ and professionally grown in a laboratory may not line up with your notions of romance. But take a few moments to familiarize yourself with Lab Grown Diamonds. You might find you are pleasantly surprised by this option."

There's a doc on Netflix called - Nothing Lasts Forever on this very topic

Most people don't realise that a diamond is actually a Carbon compound, created under immense pressure, which can be created in labs, known as synthetic Diamonds.

The result? You cannot tell the difference and industry has admitted it doesn't know which of the diamonds being sold are natural or synthetic.

One of the misconceptions if diamonds are rare, they are not. The Kimberley mine which was the biggest and most wealthy used to dig out masses of tons but leave them in a heap, in order to sustain the price. Mines are now following the same strategy.

Lab grown diamond are cheaper but there is still a reluctance from consumers. Some people feel they are fake but as explained above, they are no different in composition. However natural diamonds have a history and vary in clarity.

There are 4 C's which are taken into account when it comes to gemstones, Clarity, Colour, Cut, Carat(weight), these determine the value.

If you buy a diamond ensure it is either VVSI or VSI (very slightly included or very very). SI is also not too bad but of course flawless is the best quality, there is a chart to confirm these.

The cut is also important, ie princess cut stones are rarer than round cuts. Usually the best quality diamonds are set in Platinum these days.

But if you buy one, esp a solitaire(single) diamond ensure its set properly, otherwise it could fall out.

Finally, take your piece to an independent gemmologist and request a valuation .. this will help for insurance purposes.

I will take a lab-grown one due to their cost factor. Both usually have the same characteristics, but lab-grown diamonds do not contain any other impurities that are common in natural diamonds. So I will go with that one.
