The matches, which form part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, will be contested at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Friday, before DP World Wanderers Stadium hosts the Dutch for the annual Betway Pink Day on Sunday, 02 April.

South Africa have named a full-strength 15-member squad to face Netherlands in their final two ICC Cricket World Cup Super League fixtures.

Only the top eight sides in the Super League standings will gain a direct entry into the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

With 78 points in their kitty, the Proteas are currently placed ninth on the MRF Tyres ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League standings. Two wins against Netherlands (each game carries 10 points) in the upcoming series, will see them overtake West Indies (currently at eighth place with 88 points) and position them well for direct qualification to the mega event in India.

Wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock says the Proteas are approaching their important clash against the Netherlands in the second Betway One-Day International as any other game ahead of the showdown at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Friday.

South Africa have plenty riding on the remaining two games of the series, which they need to win in order to finish in the top eight of the ICC World Cup Super League table and automatically qualify for the finals in India later this year.

“Everyone knows the importance of these two games, but we’re just treating them like any other games,” De Kock told the media on Thursday. “We just have to make sure we come prepared and come out running. We know it won’t be easy, but we need to be professional and play the way we know we can. If we can do that, everything else should take care of itself.”

The first match of the series was played on 26 November 2021 at SuperSport Park and ended in a no result due to the weather. The Covid-19 pandemic subsequently forced the tour to be postponed.

The Proteas have been on the upward trajectory in ODIs in recent months, beating England and then drawing with West Indies in their most recent home series. They did, however, lose to the island nation in their most recent T20 International assignment – a thrilling three-game sequence that ended 2-1 to the tourists.

De Kock said: “It’s obviously quite nice that the guys got to spend time in the middle and found form during the West Indies series. We were disappointed to lose the series, but we were happy with the way we played.”

South Africa have also been playing some noticeably attracting cricket in recent months and the dashing opener says they are trying to be smarter about the way they were playing.

“We’re obviously trying to play an aggressive brand of cricket, but we’re also trying to be clever in the way we go about things… making sure we choose the right options, not just double stepping and trying to hit sixes all the time, it doesn’t work like that especially in the longer format,” he said. “We need to be clever, we need to be strategic with how we want to get more boundaries in a sense and build a bigger strike rate.

“So we are trying to attack more, but it’s a work in process for us. We know we will fail from time to time, but it’s been working for us and the guys are really enjoying it. It looks like the guys are really coming together with regard to this new way we want to go about playing.”

The match in Benoni is the first for the South Africans since they played Ireland in what was captain Temba Bavuma’s ODI debut match in September 2016.

Speaking about the venue, De Kock added: “It’s nice to be back here in Benoni. It’s been a while since my last game here, which was probably Temba’s debut. It’s generally a pretty decent wicket, hopefully the rain stays away so we can get down to playing some good cricket.”

There's an orange elephant in South Africa's dressing room. The last time they played the Netherlands, at the men's T20 World Cup in Adelaide in November, the minnows leapt like salmon and did the unthinkable: they won.

South Africa should win this one easily. 189 is below-par.

Netherlands wasted a good start.

Easy easy win for South Africa by 8 wickets with 20 overs remaining.

Three wickets apiece by Sisanda Magala and Tabraiz Shamsi followed by a powerful unbeaten 90 from captain Temba Bavuma set the Proteas on their way to a comfortable eight wicket win over the Netherlands in the second Betway One-Day International in Benoni on Friday.

There was also a forceful half-century from T20 International skipper Aiden Markram at Willowmoore Park where the hosts move 1-0 up in the three-match series and one step closer to automatic qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup in India later this year.

Despite the exploits of the two white-ball captains, in essence this victory was set up by the bowlers, who hit back after a good start by the tourists to restrict them to 189 all out. Magala used the conditions well to finish with three for 37 and win the Player of the Match award, while Shamsi was also excellent in picking up three for 25.

The Proteas won the toss at the start, and with rain forecast, they opted to bowl first. Openers Vikramjit Singh (45) and Max O'Dowd (18) put on a solid 58 for the opening wicket, before both fell to Magala.

Anrich Nortje (2/24) then knocked over Wesley Barresi (7) and captain Scott Edwards (5) to leave the Dutch on 94 for four. That was when Shamsi got in on the act and cramped Musa Ahmed (17) for room to leave the away side in further strife just after crossing 100.

Teja Nidamanuru (48) did his best to rebuild, but lost wickets around him in an effort to rebuild.

Shamsi claimed two of the last five wickets to fall, with top-scorer Nidamanuru drawn into an edge off Magala with the score on 178. The tail offered little resistance and the visitors were bowled out in 46.1 overs.

The chase by the Proteas began poorly with Quinton de Kock top-edging to backward square leg for five to leave the score on 18 for one. However, Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen (31) combined for a 70-run stand in just over 13 overs to put their side in command. And even though the latter was removed, Bavuma kept going on a ground where he scored a century on debut against Ireland in September 2016.

He fell 10 short this time, but his 90* (79 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) was equally impressive as he combined with Markram (51* off 39 balls, 7 fours, 1 six) for an unbroken 102-run third-wicket stand that drove their side to victory with 20 overs to spare.

The result means South Africa are now level on points with West Indies on the ICC World Cup Super League table with the chance to move clear when they face the Dutch in the Betway Pink ODI at DP World Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday.

SL need to play qualifiers now. If SA win the last ODI vs Netherlands as well, then WI will have to play qualifiers as well.

SA need to win at all costs to stay on course for a qualification

An incredible maiden Aiden Markram century together with a career-best five-for from Sisanda Magala helped the Proteas cruise to a huge 146-run win over the Netherlands in the third Betway Pink One-Day International in Johannesburg on Sunday.

The result sealed the rearranged three-match series 2-0 for the hosts. More importantly, it moved them ahead in the race for ICC Cricket World Cup qualification where only one team can catch them on the ICC World Cup Super League table.

This result, however, was an important one under pressure on a day when the DP World Wanderers Stadium was painted pink and filled with a vibrant crowd.

Right-hander Markram, South Africa's T20 International captain, was the star of the show during the first half of the day when he clobbered his own best ODI score of 175 (126 balls, 17 fours, 7 sixes), smashing his previous best score of 96 in what was his 50th match for his country.

He was aided excellently by David Miller, who blasted 91 off 61 balls (6 fours, 4 sixes) as the home side racked up 370 for eight.

It was then over to Magala to carry the baton during the second part of the day, with the seamer grabbing five for 43 to help bowl out the visitors for 224 in 39.1 overs.

It gave the Proteas a commanding win and one that means they moved ahead of West Indies in the race for the World Cup later this year, with the only side that can catch them being Ireland when they take on Bangladesh next month.

With South Africa having comfortably won match two of the series in Benoni on Friday – the tour was postponed and rearranged after a Covid-19 outbreak following match one in 2021 – they were looking to close out the series on Sunday.

And after losing the toss and being put in to bat, they were dealt a double blow inside the first eight overs when captain Temba Bavuma (6) and Quinton de Kock (8) were removed by Vivian Kingma (2/80) with only 32 on the board.

Markram, together with Rassie van der Dussen (25) and Heinrich Klaasen (28), did the initial repair work with stand of 62 and 51 respectively that took the hosts to 145 for four.

Then came the main action of the day when Markram and Miller put together a destructive partnership of 199, during which the former surpassed his previous best score, reached three figures and then recorded the joint-sixth highest individual score by a South African in ODIs – only Gary Kirsten (188*), Faf du Plessis (185), De Kock (178), Janneman Malan (177*), AB de Villiers (176) and Herchelle Gibbs (175) have more than him in an innings.

He was finally out to the stand-out bowler Fred Klaasen (2/43) with the score on 344, with the home side losing Miller next nine short of his ton and then tailing away to set 371.

To their credit, the Dutch chase began smoothly as they managed to reach 151 for two just after halfway of the innings with only a wicket each for Marco Jansen (1/39) and Magala.

Musa Ahmed (61 off 69 balls, 7 fours, 3 sixes) was the key man at that stage with Max O'Dowd having scored 47 earlier. However, once the former fell to golden boy Markram (2/40), there was little the visitors could do as they tried to keep up with the soaring run-rate.

Magala fully capitalised with his accuracy proving key – four of his five wickets were bowled – as the home side cleaned up the Dutch lower order and tail with more than 10 overs to spare.
