The tech entrepreneur Elon Musk on Friday showed off a pig whose brain he says has been implanted with a small computer.

“We have a healthy and happy pig, initially shy but obviously high energy and, you know, kind of loving life, and she’s had the implant for two months,” Musk said of Gertrude, the pig.

The billionaire entrepreneur, whose other companies include Tesla and SpaceX, presented during a livestream event to recruit employees for his neuroscience startup Neuralink. He described Gertrude’s coin-sized implant as “a Fitbit in your skull with tiny wires”.

Musk co-founded Neuralink in 2016 with the goal of creating a wireless brain-machine interface, something scientists hope can help cure neurological conditions and allow people with paralysis to control a computer mouse.

In July 2019, Neuralink unveiled a design that involved implanting tiny electrode “threads” into the brain as well as another device behind the ear. The new device Musk described Friday is much smaller, does not require the visible ear device, and would be implanted in the brain by a surgical robot under local anesthesia.

The device is removable, Musk said, and he showed off another pig, Dorothy, whom he claimed had had one of the devices implanted and subsequently removed. “What Dorothy illustrates is that you can put in the Neuralink, remove it, and be healthy, happy and indistinguishable from a normal pig.”

While most of the near-term practical applications of wireless brain-machine interfaces are medical, Musk has also expressed a desire that such devices could help human intelligence compete with artificial intelligence, which he considers an “existential threat”. At Friday’s event, the entrepreneur made a number of outsize claims about the potential capabilities of the technology, including that it could be used to summon a Tesla, play video games, or allow a person with a severed spinal cord to walk again.

Musk did not present any scientific data to support his claims about the pigs or the devices.

Neuralink has raised more than $150m in funding, including $100m from Musk himself. The company employs roughly 100 people, but could soon expand to 10,000, Musk said at the event.

Musk also said that Neuralink had achieved FDA Breakthrough Device designation in July, a program that can help expedite the regulatory process for products “that provide for more effective treatment or diagnosis of life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating diseases or conditions”. Such a designation does not mean the device is approved by the FDA.

Neuroscience experts say that while Neuralink’s mission to read and stimulate brain activity in humans is feasible, the company’s timeline appears overly ambitious.

“Everyone in the field would be very impressed if they actually showed data from a device implanted in a human,” said Graeme Moffat, a University of Toronto neuroscience research fellow.

Small devices that electronically stimulate nerves and brain areas to treat hearing loss and Parkinson’s disease have been implanted in humans for decades.

Neuroscientists have also conducted brain implant trials with a small number of people who have lost control of bodily functions due to spinal cord injuries or neurological conditions such as strokes. Humans in those trials could control robotic limbs or small objects, such as a computer keyboard or mouse cursor, but have yet to complete more sophisticated tasks.

Most of the current cutting-edge research in brain-machine interface is conducted on animals, scientists note, with safety challenges and lengthy regulatory approval procedures preventing larger human trials.

Notably, Musk, who has been a frequent source of misinformation about coronavirus in recent months and fought to keep his factories open during the pandemic, did not wear a face mask during his presentation, despite being in a room with dozens of employees, a camera crew and veterinary staff. He eventually put on a mask during a question and answer session.

It reminds me of Upgrade (movie).

An implant eventually took over a human body.

Used to think this guy is a breath of fresh air, very smart but after naming his child with the most idiotic name in history, I now feel is cuckoo.

By this time this becomes the norm in the world, there will be no world left.

Imagine a world where everyone has this chip, which will become much more advance and be able to store all your memories on a hard drive in the cloud like a computer, the network that powers it is starlink, beamed from space through millions of saterlites, and its all owned by one person - ELON MUSK - the guys obviously a geeky genius but wouldnt this make him a god, he could control the world and be a king of earth.

Someone in the comments was like "I don't want to see ads in my dreams" lol

The major use of it would only be for ppl unable to see or walk which is due to neurological issues

Why would you care what he names his kid as? Your name might sound funny to some South American Tribal man too.

Musk is doing a great job in pushing humanity into the future where many medical problems which we think now are incurable becomes curable or easily manageable in the next 5-10 years.

The age of AI is slowly taking over without many of us even noticing it.

Tesla Ads.

Lol I'm sure it will be more subtle as to we will wake up wanting to buy Tesla :P , tbf this is the only tech which i think should be regulated, problem is if given to govn to regulate they might feed their propaganda who knows.

Irrespective I can see people with neurological issues benefiting from this.

It will change there life and make them live again but we know its only an excuse really to pilot test it on real humans, then sell it to everyone else promising superhuman abilities.

If it was for disability, elon musk will be no where near it, but as he has claimed numerous times, this is to merge humans with AI, rather than having AI separate and wiping us out.

But i could already imagine the power he will have to take over. Brain chips, internet access through starlink, then he has a free hand to create his own real life social network wiping out FB and even google as he can make his search engine the default ones in your brain, and ofcourse he will control transportation through tesla and spaceX, maybe make avatar bodies in outer space for us to connect too. Imagine the power he has.

I understand the consequences, scientific progress cannot be stopped irrespective of it being promoted by megalomaniac entrepreneurs.

Most of us have some bias already, nationalistic or religious, liberal conservative.. all fed to us over the years...

I don't want any implant inside my body. This may well be a trap.

Human should remain human. We don't need to merge with AI.

I hope a day comes when I can record my dreams in high resolution video and sound quality. Some of them were quite amazing to be honest.

Trap for what?

AI is coming whether someone likes it or not. This will help us gain and even footing, that's the idea.

But first it is to help people with disabilities live more fuller lives. It will change the world first through making brain disease manageable and then curing many of them.

The rest of the stuff like sharing thoughts is going to take a while, not even the prototype will happen this decade.

theres no use for humans in the future, thats what elon is getting at, no jobs, no money, no food, AI will take over and make humans part of the useless class.

Its only my opinion its a very weird name. He is welcome to thnk the same of mine but most will agree with me.

Musk also have worries regarding AI, please look up his comments.

Now this is moving fast.

Elon Musk's Neuralink 'shows monkey playing Pong with mind'

Neuralink, Elon Musk's computer to brain interface firm, has released a video it claims shows a monkey playing the video game Pong with its mind.

Its brain signals were sent wirelessly via an implanted device.

The hope is that the interface could eventually allow people with neurological conditions to control phones or computers remotely.

One expert said the fact no wires were used represented "significant progress", but more data was needed.

The macaque monkey, named Pager, was first taught to play the video game with a joystick, and was rewarded with a fruit smoothie.

During this process, the Neuralink device recorded the information about which neurons were firing to control which movements.

Then the joystick was disconnected, leaving the monkey to control gameplay with its mind only.

Well our AI overlords are just waiting in the wings. Watch out.
Who will be the Terminator for us ? Boris, Biden or Putin :boom:

If AI and Neuralink works, BCCI will be the first to jump into the bandwagon and create an alternate AIPL. We will see wonders like Chetan Pujara becoming Chetan Gayle and Shardul Thakur turning into Shardul Boult
