Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, was named among eleven powerful women of the world on Sunday in a 2017 ranking issued by the New York Times.

According to NYT, Maryam is the most courageous and most powerful woman of Pakistan. “Maryam is the most suitable heir to the political empire that her father and ousted premier Nawaz Sharif has built.” However, the foreign media outlet said corruption charges against her and her family are clouding her rapid rise

“She had recently emerged as the right hand of her father Nawaz Sharif,” the Times report says.
The other women on the list are , Manal al-Sharif of Saudi Arabia, Emma Morano, Margot Wallstrom (Sweden), Henda Ayari, Olive Yang, Asli Erdogan, Letizia Battaglia, Sinta Nuriyah, Yu Xiuhua and Alice Schwarzer.

She can move to NY and read NYT all she wants. Would be the best thing to happen to Pakistan since her father rightly got disqualified.

Aik wari phir sher!!!

So a woman who has ZERO contribution to country except being corrupt PM's daughter and absolutely ZERO presence on ground and few tweets that put her father i trouble on weekly basis is most powerful woman in country :))

What more? She was named in Panama leaks and has lied to whole nation about her properties.

What does being powerful really mean?

Maryam stole $70 million girls education grant given to her by Michelle Obama. Shairr, aik vari fairrr!

Well strong doesnt necessarily translate to good does it

Is this the same Maryam Nawaz who delivered the rant about Hindus and Jews or was that a different one?

In any case, I was initially going to dismiss this claim, but thinking about it, as the govt in Pakistan is going to be a conduit for USA policies in the region, then they might have a point.

It is one and the same thing but that was Maryam Aurangzeb

Assalamu alaikum. Coming from a nation that elected and selected a corrupt, bigoted, incapable, opportunist like Donald Trump over the humble, brilliant, well-meaning, popular and competent Bernie Sanders, it stands to reason why Maryam is amongst their most powerful women list.

Poor souls have no clue that it is not mortals, but God Almighty Who empowers and elevates. Some as a lesson and some as a blessing unto others.

May Allah forbid that any member of this family or party be inflicted upon us again, to serve as a reminder and lesson for our short-comings, and may we transform and change from within to make ourselves worthy of the blessing of Imran Khan, whilst Allah keeps him steadfast unto all that is most pleasing to Him aameen.

I actually seeing her taking the Pm post a decade or so from now. It's pretty obvious she is being groomed for the role. There is massive support for her as well.

Pakistani media in a nutshell... Huge difference between to be ranked among top 11 powerful women, and that of being randomly one of eleven who get the "honor" of being interviewed by NYT in 2017, and later decribed as powerful because they have "gone through and remarkable experience". Nobody can deny the latter.

Nowhere in the article it states it is a ranking of any sorts.

No there isn't

Was this article published before or after the announcement made by NS that Shehbaz Sharif will be PML-N's next candidate for PM. If it would have been Maryam, maybe this mention in the NYT's list would have meant something. Right now, Maryam's future seemed destined to be mostly spent outside Pakistan running away from the courts.

Is it odd that I'm fascinated by her. Wish there was more about her history on Wikipedia. If anyone in the future is going to take over as prime minister for Pakistan it will be her. She has been groomed for the role since 2001. She has the experience and people backing her for the position. I don't think she is power hungry or going to be anything like her father.
