New Zealand begin their ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League campaign this week when they take on Bangladesh in a three-match ODI series.

Overview
New Zealand v Bangladesh, 1st ODI
University Oval, Dunedin
20 March, 11am local time

Having locked away a berth in the World Test Championship Final, New Zealand now turn their attention to the shorter game. In fact, Saturday’s series opener will be the Kiwis' first ODI in more than a year.

They last played the format in March 2020, losing the first match of what was meant to be a three-game series against Australia. As things eventuated, it was the final international cricket match played for more than three months as the coronavirus pandemic halted sport globally.

Now, the Black Caps begin their march to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, commencing their CWC Super League campaign against a Bangladesh outfit sitting second on the standings.

Bangladesh started their quest for World Cup qualification by clean sweeping the West Indies 3-0 in January in their first CWC Super League series.

The 30 points they picked up in that series has them sitting second to Australia (40) and ahead of England, Afghanistan and the West Indies on net run rate.

Having won their past six home ODIs, including a 3-0 clean sweep of Bangladesh, New Zealand go into the series as favourites. However, Bangladesh have reason to be confident after winning their past six ODIs.

Hitting the ground running could be key for Bangladesh given New Zealand will be missing two of their best batsmen for the opening match.

Ross Taylor has been ruled out of the series opener with a hamstring injury while an elbow injury has sidelined Kane Williamson for the entirety of the campaign.

Of course, Bangladesh have a notable absentee of their own in star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who is away on paternity leave.

Despite Williamson and Shakib's absence, the series will not be short of star quality. New Zealand's attack will be spearheaded by Trent Boult, who sits on top of the ICC ODI bowling rankings. In response, Bangladesh have the services of off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz and seamer Mustafizur Rahman, sitting fourth and eighth respectively on the rankings.

Fixtures (all times local)
1st ODI: Saturday, 20 March, 11am at University Oval, Dunedin
2nd ODI: Tuesday, 23 March, 2pm at Hagley Oval, Christchurch
3rd ODI: Friday, 26 March, 11am at Basin Reserve, Wellington

Remember last time

New Zealand beat Bangladesh 3-0 last time they toured, with Martin Guptill crowned Player of the Series after averaging 132 across the three games.

The touring side were bowled out for 232 in the series opener and New Zealand chased that down with eight wickets to spare thanks to a Guptill century. Game two had a touch of deja vu as Guptill helped New Zealand mow down a target of 227.

The Black Caps completed the clean sweep in the third match, winning by 88 runs after a six-wicket haul from Tim Southee.

Look out for

Martin Guptill – The opener can become just the fourth New Zealand batter to score 7000 ODI runs this series. He goes into the campaign with his tally at 6843 and will be intent on reaching the landmark sooner rather than later.

With Taylor and Williamson both missing for the first match, Guptill looms as an even bigger wicket for Bangladesh. He goes into the series in strong white-ball form, having smashed 218 runs at an average of 43.60 against Australia in the recent T20I series.

Tamim Iqbal - The captain was in impressive form in Bangladesh’s recent 3-0 victory over the West Indies, top-scoring for the series with 158 runs at 52.66.

The leading run-scorer in the country’s history, Tamim (7360 at 36.90) will have to be at his best for Bangladesh given the absence of star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.

The last time Bangladesh toured New Zealand, it was with the bat that they fell short. Tamim will be key to ensuring that does not happen again.

The two stalwarts Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor are not playing so chances for new middle-order batsmen to show their worth. Devon Conway averages above 40 in all formats in domestic cricket and has made an impressive start to his international career so definitely one to keep an eye on.

Bangladesh are without Shakib which is a massive blow, but given NZ's absentees this is a big chance for them. Hopefully this'll be a competitive series.

New Zealand wins the toss and elect to bowl.

Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell and Will Young will all make their debuts today at Dunedin.

Would be interesting to see how young 21 year old BD pacer Hasan Mahmud goes, looked decent in the U19 world cup.

NZ with some decent debutants in batting.

Some movement and bounce on offer for seamers.

One wicket brings two. Soft dismissal from Soumya Sarkar, ball too close to body to play that shot.

Should be 3 wickets for NZ, edge and would've been a simple catch for first slip but keeper dives in front of him.

Pakistan were 32-8 after 18 overs vs NZ at this ground in an ODI three years ago.

Bangladesh managing to avoid the same fate so far, but NZ seamers continually probing away.

53 3 after 17 overs.

Hard work for the tourists so far.

Neither run rate nor wicket conservation has been ideal so far. RR of 3.08 after 18 overs is really low in 50 overs cricket and strike rotation hasnt been great either. If BD can get aroind 230-250 finish, that would be a good recovery from this.

BD cricket isn't going anywhere. They invested on wrong people - Soumya , Mithun ,Mehedy . Those are pretty average players. Once fav 4 retires it's dooms day for BD cricket.

Mahmudullah averages 50 at no 4 in 18 innings and scored 2 100s in WC 2015 at that position, after 3 poor scores of 0, 1 and 3 in 2016 tour of NZ he was demoted forever. Pretty surprising.

Time to maybe invest in more new gen players atleast in positions where players havent been performing.

BD should have debuted some batsmen from their last U19 WC batch. They won that WC and I think there were some good batsmen in that batch.

I also think so. Players with higher domestic average should be invested upon.

The Blackcaps cruised to a comfortable win against Bangladesh at the University Oval on Saturday to go 1-0 up in the three-match ODI series, in their first match of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.

In his 100th ODI, captain Tom Latham won the toss for New Zealand and sent their opponents straight into the middle to bat. When Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal smashed Trent Boult (4/27) for six off the third ball of the innings, the visitors seemed destined for a competitive total.

Heading into the fifth over, Bangladesh were comfortable, with their openers putting on 19 on the board. Tamim was then caught napping by Boult, who trapped him lbw for 13 runs off 15 balls. The New Zealand quick struck again three balls later, this time removing Soumya Sarkar for a duck, and suddenly, Bangladesh were 19/2.

Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim responded well to the early setback, putting on a steady 23, but the momentum was completely lost when the Blackcaps welcomed Jimmy Neesham (2/27) into the attack. With his second delivery, Neesham dismissed Das for 19 leaving Bangladesh 42/3 in just the 14th over.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Mohammad Mithun somewhat steadied the ship for their side, adding 27 for the fourth wicket, but in the 22nd over, Neesham effected two dismissals in as many overs. Rahim was caught by Martin Guptill for 23, while Mithun was run out after Neesham got his fingertips onto a drive at the stumps at the bowler's end.

Mitchell Santner (2/23) joined in on the action, knocking over leg stump to bowl Mehidy Hasan for 1. Four overs later, Santner forced a shot from Mahedi Hasan into the hands of Nicholls, leaving Bangladesh 98/7. With able support from Matt Henry, Boult cleaned up the tail to restrict the Tigers to just 131 runs off 41.5 overs.

Requiring 132 runs to win, Guptill (38) and Henry Nicholls went straight to work for New Zealand, with Guptill smacking Mustafizur Rahman for four and six in the first over of the chase.

The Blackcaps openers set the tone for the chase with a quickfire 54 after five overs, including nine boundaries.

Suddenly, Bangladesh sniffed a comeback when Taskin Ahmed (1/23) had Guptill caught behind off a slight edge. Debutant Devon Conway came to the crease next for New Zealand, and took the occasion in his stride, scoring 27 off 52 balls before throwing away his wicket in the 20th over.

From there on in, the Blackcaps cruised to victory with fellow debutant Will Young (11*) scoring the winning runs in the 22nd over as Nicholls was stranded on 49*.

The second ODI will be played on Tuesday, 23 March in Christchurch.

Not looking this is going to be a fun tour for Bangladesh at the moment

Crushing win for NZ.

To be fair, I expected this type of big loss. BD are not looking very spirited.

Looks like it's going to be a long tour for Bangladesh.

Possibly some tough lessons for their players in the coming days.

NZ becoming a cricketing powerhouse at home.
