By the end of the clash between New Zealand and South Africa, it was clear that one of the two sides would have to wait a little longer to seal qualification for the ongoing T20 World Cup. Both teams managed to overcome Afghanistan national cricket team, the only side in the group realistically capable of upsetting their plans. With United Arab Emirates national cricket team and Canada national cricket team completing the group, progression for the top seeds always felt inevitable.
Afghanistan’s expected victory over the UAE has further simplified matters, officially securing South Africa’s place in the next round.
While nothing is ever certain in sport, New Zealand’s qualification now appears to be a formality. Apart from their setback against South Africa, they have looked sharp throughout the tournament. They also return to familiar conditions in Chennai, a venue where several squad members have extensive experience. In their two matches at the ground in this edition, New Zealand were clinical. They comfortably chased down 183 against Afghanistan, and openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen dismantled the UAE attack in commanding fashion. A similar dominant display against Canada on Tuesday would not be surprising.
Canada, to their credit, have shown resilience. They recovered from 45/4 against South Africa to post a total exceeding 150 despite eventually losing. They also pushed the UAE deep in their encounter, appearing well placed to win before falling short in the final over. However, if they are to seriously test New Zealand, their batting unit will need to deliver a much stronger performance than it has so far in the competition.
Squads:
Canada Squad: Yuvraj Samra, Dilpreet Bajwa(c), Navneet Dhaliwal, Nicholas Kirton, Harsh Thaker, Shreyas Movva(w), Jaskaran Singh, Saad Bin Zafar, Dilon Heyliger, Kaleem Sana, Ansh Patel, Ravinderpal Singh, Kanwarpal Tathgur, Ajayveer Hundal, Shivam Sharma
New Zealand Squad: Tim Seifert(w), Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner(c), James Neesham, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Jacob Duffy, Ish Sodhi, Kyle Jamieson, Devon Conway, Cole McConchie
