By the end of the clash between New Zealand and South Africa, it was clear that one of the two sides would have to wait a little longer to seal qualification for the ongoing T20 World Cup. Both teams managed to overcome Afghanistan national cricket team, the only side in the group realistically capable of upsetting their plans. With United Arab Emirates national cricket team and Canada national cricket team completing the group, progression for the top seeds always felt inevitable.

Afghanistan’s expected victory over the UAE has further simplified matters, officially securing South Africa’s place in the next round.

While nothing is ever certain in sport, New Zealand’s qualification now appears to be a formality. Apart from their setback against South Africa, they have looked sharp throughout the tournament. They also return to familiar conditions in Chennai, a venue where several squad members have extensive experience. In their two matches at the ground in this edition, New Zealand were clinical. They comfortably chased down 183 against Afghanistan, and openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen dismantled the UAE attack in commanding fashion. A similar dominant display against Canada on Tuesday would not be surprising.

Canada, to their credit, have shown resilience. They recovered from 45/4 against South Africa to post a total exceeding 150 despite eventually losing. They also pushed the UAE deep in their encounter, appearing well placed to win before falling short in the final over. However, if they are to seriously test New Zealand, their batting unit will need to deliver a much stronger performance than it has so far in the competition.

Imagine NZ bat first and Finn Allen and Tim Seifert run havoc and smash it and they score 250 in their 20 overs.

Canada have won the toss and have opted to bat

Big over for Canada. 18 off it.

Part-timer Neesham was taken to the cleaners.

CAN - 50/0 (6 overs).

Canada hammering kiwi bowlers . Pakistan should have easy win with them

Lol this yuvraj samra is only 19 years old. It seems like he got birth certificate from Afghanistan's hospital.

Not a single native Canadian in this match. Pakistan/SL, even the likes of NZ and SA, should be wary of these associate nations now. They are importing bench strengths of India, SL, Pakistan, and building formidable teams. If ICC gives these associate nations regular tournaments, the traditional Big 8 clique will be broken.

Yuvraj was born in Canada.

Garbage bowling from New Zealand, no way they deserve Super 8s over Afghans.

Samra only has a big beard but that face is very young looking. Contrast that to Pak U-19 players. No matter how close they shave, their aged faces don't lie :inti

Very good batting by yuvraj samra guy.
A 100 in t20 format is always special and he got that in world cup that too against New Zealand.
Although definitely doesn't look 19 years old.

Fantastic knock from a youngster.

Youngest to score a hundred in T20 WCs

19y 141d - Yuvraj Samra (CAN) vs NZ, Chennai, 2026*
22y 127d - Ahmed Shehzad (PAK) vs BAN, Mirpur, 2014
23y 156d - Suresh Raina (IND) vs SA, Gros Islet, 2010

Not even a New Zealand fan but watching Neesham, Jamieson and the likes makes my blood boil. Pathetic bowling, performance, and fielding.

James neesham has been playing since time immemorial.
Just an average cricketer who keeps coming back for New Zealand with zero performance.
A bit like Pakistani cricketers.

Samra is born in Canada and played cricket here. That's as native as it gets in Canada as there's so much diversity. Unless of course you're referring to Indigenous Peoples who invented sports such as Lacrosse and Kayaking

He is a proper bits and pieces player like andre Adams , craig Macmillan , larsen . Chris haris type.

New Zealand's bowling has been very poor in this tournament. Yes, they are playing on flat pitches but that's still no excuse to get pushed around by associates in this fashion. I believe they have conceded 170+ in every match and not taken more than 6 wickets even once

Canada has punched above their weight, but Kiwi batting is good... They should chase it down easy

No way kiwis losing this . It will be biggest upset of it happens

There is something rather fishy for games involing the '' real minnows '' - Canada lost their 1st wicket at 116 & 2nd at 153 .
Kiwis lost first 2 at score of 30 !

Garbage bowling from New Zealand, no way they deserve Super 8s over Afghans.
You don't deserve anything, you earn it. Afghans showed they can't handle pressure in tough situations so where they are is an accurate reflection of where they should be

Ravindra was the only NZ batter out of form and now he has hit form too. Right before the Pakistan match :kp

This is a very mediocre bowling attack, even by associates' standards. Pakistan's spin attack on Lankan pitches is a much steeper challenge.
Yeah but he's a good player and more importantly, a good player of spin. Sometimes you need exactly these type of soft runs against an easy attack to get back in form.

All these associate teams bat well
Canada lost but they made 173 against NZ, something I dare say our present batting is incapable of (on most days anyway)

If only these associate teams could improve their bowling…
