Australia won the toss and elected to field

Hazlewood is better than the 'new action' Pattinson so far! Pattinson has limited himself with this new action!

A gripping game in PSL and no one knows as if this match exists or not! Lol! Yeh cheez Pakistanio! Way to go! ;-)

And beats the batsman 4 times in a row.

That old Pattinson was something special! He was my favourite by miles! But post his change of action, he has lost that old touch! Although performed well against WI because he switched back to his old action specifically in that innings in which he tool a 5-fer! Lets see if can become consistent!

He hasn't lost anything. Just needs to group some games together to regain rhythm.

Still can't cash in.

Had 2 lives in that innings.

That SL series against SL secured him a spot..

Why does Guptill play tests as if they're ODI's?

Seems to go at a run a ball more often than not these days. Last game went for 45(51) or so when NZ were 300 behind.

Doesn't work if the ball is moving around.

Trying to capitalise Guptill's LOI form in Tests isn't working.

NZ should stick with Hamish Rutherford and drop Guptill! Not a good Test batsman!
Tell us something that we don't know.

Most NZ fans who know anything about cricket don't want Guptill and Craig anywhere near the side yet the continue to be picked.

Is the pitch as green as it was in 1st test

Such things sometimes don't work! You have to gauge a player by looking at his FC record as well! The selectors closed their eyes and threw him into the Test arena and expected him to succeed like in LOIs! Lol! But Test format is entirely different and one has to be realistic in their thinking!

He's played a lot of Tests, around 40 and still has a low average (30) for this era.

Our batsmen are looking like amateurs out there

These 2 need to survive till lunch and protect the middle order, it will only get easier to bat on.

Yes you can, particularly when you know that they'll fail the next time.
Things don't work like that in the real world, the SL series was his last chance and he scored heavily (253 @ 63.25) and guaranteed a spot for this series.

It's silly to recall a player who hasn't played Test cricket for a year or introduce a new player for a series against the Aussies.

Any time I see Latham play he looks dodgy as hell but he somehow sticks around
He's actually very technically sounds, it's his judgement that's poor.

He plays at too many deliveries which he shouldn't be playing and ends up throwing it away.

Saad Nasim had a decent outing in his first ODI series but he was promptly discarded because the selectors knew that he didn't have the ability to succeed internationally.

Guptill has played ~ 40 Tests and that is a good sample size and therefore that should've been conclusive for the NZ sectors to sideline him.

We know that, but NZC isn't like that.

They're not going to drop someone who scored runs, and it's not like someone on the sidelines is scoring heavily enough to deserve a spot. Not that Guptill deserves one either, Rutherford is probably worse and the others we have are unproven at this level. If we're going to blood someone in I would have preferred it to be against teams like SL and WI, it would be unfair to have them come in for such a big series, it would be too much pressure too early.

Smith really has proven to be brilliant tactically.

He's probably the best Test captain in the world right now.

A pretty good effort to be 2 down here, this wicket is a lot more difficult to bat on than the one at the Basin.

'Silly slip' seems to be becoming a common fielding position for Williamson on pitches with movement, seem to remember England trying the same thing against him in the summer. Must be so annoying to be at slips and he constantly manages to guide it to you on the bounce.

Nicholls is not compact enough to be a #4. But if he's the best NZ have then that's understandable.

There must be tears of joy in the eyes of Aman watching his captain play a blinder in one of his last innings, probably getting flashbacks of the past 3 years, the 302 vs India, the world cup, the 200 vs us :rosco

Let it out, brother. :sree

Bloody hell.

That will make some PPers very, VERY happy ;)

Haven't been able to come on for match thread due to being away but I'm at this match for all 5 days. Amazing watching so far.

This is why you need at least one genuine fast in your lineup. Australia missing Starc here.

never seen a field setting like this... 2 thirdman's for a flying edge :)))

BMac has totally changed the landscape of NZ cricket. Gone are the days when we Pakistanis used to think that a match against the blackcaps is an easy win.

BMac on fyah. So NZ have gone with 4 quicks good move. Another hundred or so runs and game on.

To be fair, they are taking a lot of chances and the out of form Watling is the only remaining recognised batsman.

Wickets could easily tumble in a heap, and a score of less than 350 justifies inserting NZ.

Just a couple of overs to go then. Oh wait forgot this is a Test match.
