San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been refusing to stand for the national anthem before NFL games in protest because the US "oppresses black people and people of colour".

Kaepernick sat on the team's bench on Friday night during the anthem before a pre-season game, drawing boos from some fans and attracting criticism on social media.

Kaepernick, a former starter who led San Francisco to the 2013 Super Bowl but has since been demoted to back-up, said he sat on the bench to make a statement about racial injustice in the US.

"I'm not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour," Kaepernick told NFL Media on Saturday.

"To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way."

Kaepernick appeared to be referring to police use of deadly force, which has come under increased criticism in recent years as incidents have been captured on mobile phones.

"If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right.

"There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

The 49ers, who have unsuccessfully tried to trade Kaepernick to another team since his demotion, issued a statement of support after the game.

"The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony," the team said.

"In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem."

Two seasons ago, players on the NFL's St. Louis Rams entered the stadium for a home game with their hands raised, a reference to the "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" slogan adopted by protesters in demonstrations against the shooting of an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri.

An NFL spokesperson said that "players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the national anthem".

Coach Chip Kelly said he had not talked to Kaepernick about his actions or comments but said that the player did not stand for the national anthem before last week's game in Denver when he was injured and did not play.

"We recognise his right to do that," Kelly said. "It's not my right to tell him not to do something. That's his right as a citizen."

Kaepernick, who is bi-racial, was adopted and raised by white parents. He has been outspoken on his Twitter account on civil rights issues and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement .

Athletes have long used their fame to make political statements, as typified by the Olympic sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos holding up their fists in a black power salute during a medals ceremony in 1968.

In 1996, NBA player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf refused to stand for the anthem, saying the US had a history of tyranny and doing so would conflict with his Islamic beliefs.

The NBA initially suspended him before it was lifted when he said he would stand and pray silently during the song.

Kaepernick said he is not worried about any potential fallout from his protest.

"This is not something that I am going to run by anybody," he said.

"I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed."

One thing I've noticed that when ever a news is released regarding a tragic matter, if the victim isn't white all the white comments tend to point fingers at the victim. It is disgusting and I've seen it so many times and it is not even funny.

Disagree with him. Black people aren't oppressed. There are still racist people, but maybe he knows something I don't.

Americans attach too much importance to the national anthem.

Recently there was furor when a gold medal winning Olympian did not have her hand on her heart while the anthem was being played in her honour.

Seriously this girl just won you an Olympic medal and you really are going to make a fuss about where her hand was at the time of the anthem

Sensing a bitter Canadian...

Can't hear you over the noise of my free public healthcare and fantastic infrastructure.

its that because you were mentally exhausted after the wait in the line?

That's not true, Trump is selling them racism, that crap sell easily.

USA police department like the clergy department back in 80s (when all the kids sex scandals broke) has lot of cultural issues. Whenever you have too much of one race/religion dominating something, that's too risky. It needs to be rebooted on modern platform of diversity, equality. Police work is not rocket science, why they are whites only ?? [emoji849][emoji849][emoji849]

There is also a war going on between blue and red America. I have being to red areas too, the more red you get, the racist, patriotic and extremist you get. It's almost American Taliban. There are loosing intellectual, economic and cultural battles to liberals in big way. After this election(Trump is going to be hammered BTW) there will be lot of soul searching. Their party is so easy to hijack by nut cases, first they had bush, now trump (who has nothing to do with Republican Party) [emoji84][emoji84][emoji84]

BTW: I am living in USA for 19 years.

Can't blame him. I would do the same if I was in his position. And American anthem is rubbish and annoying anyway.

Lol I'd want to live anywhere but the US, don't wanna be surrounded by tons of hillbilly Americans, definitely not with Trump or Hillary looking to be president.
Hillbillies only in South. I don't want either of them to be president.

Not to forget, lots of racism, crazy police force.

Wouldn't want to live there as a Muslim.
It sucks man. I might laugh off jokes made by my friends calling me a terrorist but it hurts to see that such ignorant people exist.

How are Muslims treated in America? I've always been curious about it.
In educated places, most people are nice. But there still are mean people. Getting a job or making friends can be hard for someone with a long beard. If you're at the US airport flying in from another country and have a Muslim name then you'll likely be brought into
a room and be interrogated. Happened to my dad. Also I was walking home from school one day and I had a school bag on. Some random cop stops me in front of a Jewish school. He suspects me. He asked me for my name, address and he even took a picture. Since I have a beard and had a bag he probably thought I was terrorist. In uneducated areas (Most of southern USA), Muslims are treated like dirt. They say stuff like "Screw these Moslems" or there was a case where a pigs head was thrown at a masjid. The new presidential candidate wants Muslims to be treated similarly to Jews in Nazi Germany. Hope he doesn't win. IMO, Muslims are more poorly treated than any other minority in the US.

it's funny how one of the reasons for the civil war in sl was the manipulation of the regional representation in universities and the parliament of sl.

it's unbelievable to think that the USA is still doing this to make sure the minorities are under represented in the congress.

No racism against black people IMO. Our president is black.

Um, try being an atheist in southern U.S.

Except when black people get shot by cops at minor traffic stops.

Let me know when Muslim men get shot to the same frequency as blacks do.

I'm so tired of the victimization narrative among wealthy American Muslims who live better lives than Hispanics and blacks do here.

Most people will have some black in them in the next 50 years. There is heavy mixing going on in USA. Even in the so called Racist South states. I live here and I see so many black men married or have kids with white and Hispanic woman.

Racism will soon end in USA.

For all the flack that white people receive, they are the most accepting people in the world. You won't see tis happening anywhere in Asia (subcontinent in particular).

True the last para

You've no idea what you're talking about. Please go watch Trump and Fox News.
Oppressed is a strong word. I'd use it for Palestinians, Chinese Muslims, Kurds and the Native Americans. At least where I live in the U.S., black people aren't oppressed. :mush

I wouldn't consider my self wealthy or someone with a victimized attitude. I probably do have a better financial state than an average hispanic or african-american. But, what I said was the average american has more prejudice towards a muslim than a black person. Most people aren't racist towards dark-skinned people. More black people get shot because there are some racist people and also less muslims than black people.

White people don't oppress black people as much as black people oppress their own kind.

You suffer from special kind of paranoia and sound just as ignorant as some racists Mr Rayman. Might be a news to you but you know black people can be Muslim too. You mean they are more prejudiced towards brown people than blacks?

White people don't oppress black people as much as black people oppress their own kind.

That is some third world level thinking. White, black or whatever, they are all Americans and deserve better than some cops shooting people willy nilly. Real issue is trigger happy cops.

I know black people can be muslim. I tried to correct my typo but i was too late lol. The most common race among muslims in the u.s. is african american. Anyway, prejudice is more common towards muslims than non muslim black people. Funny picture btw.:O

Seriously, stop talking. You still have no clue what you're talking about.

Last I checked, I've personally witnessed brown Muslims calling black people "abeed", which also includes black Muslims, be they indigenous or recent African immigrants.

Check your victimization privilege at the door.

America has an issue ,true there is a bias but considering the population of legally 300 million with different states and so many races its defn the most accepting country right now.

The good thing about Americans is they keep evolving their society unlike others.I might have a dislike for American foreign policy but the way they keep changing their laws in accordance with time is remarkable.

On the topic the guy should had kept National Anthem out of it,patriotism with fighting bias are the best ways, many black leaders believe that as well not sure why this guy wants to go the "ghetto" way.

it's funny how one of the reasons for the civil war in sl was the manipulation of the regional representation in universities and the parliament of sl.

Explain. I wanna know what you've been told.

Not trigger happy cops. But Scared Cops.

Cops do not know what the black guy is hiding in his shirt or pocket.

When the Cop says spread the arms, the suspect has to listen. If the suspect keeps saying I am innocent, leave me alone and all the while putting his hands in his jacket, he will get shot.

From what I see, black people have no role models. Many do not know who their dad is. No discipline. They grow up idolizing good for nothing thug rappers who glorify violence (all in the name of keeping it real).

Just compare them with the hardworking blacks from Caribbean or Africans. You know the difference.

Funnily, this 49'ers Quarter Back has a black dad(whom he never met) and a white Mom.

His Mom could not take care of him and so gave him for adoption. He was adopted by a White family who provided everything to him. Yet he cries racism.

Yes, racism exists. Its not going to go away anytime soon. Just keep working and the change will come eventually. Disrespecting US Anthem will not change anything.

Not trigger happy cops. But Scared Cops.

Saeed was right the first time. Violence against police in 2015 was at a 45 year low and one of the safest years for police according to FBI data so US cops should stop claiming they're under seige. Even if a police officer is "scared" - you don't shoot at the slightest provocation when dealing with human lives. Plus many incidents of police violence have involved no provocation whatsoever hence the outcry.
Cops do not know what the black guy is hiding in his shirt or pocket.

When the Cop says spread the arms, the suspect has to listen. If the suspect keeps saying I am innocent, leave me alone and all the while putting his hands in his jacket, he will get shot.
Ah the nasty black man was resisting so let's pull the trigger argument. Yet Levar Jones was shot by a white police officer while FULLY complying with his commands. Jonathan Ferrel was killed by a white police officer while seeking help after a car accident ! What weapons did Eric Garner have before he was placed an illegal chokehold ? A 12 year boy Tamir Rice was playing with a toy gun and was shot in 2 seconds - no hands up, no warning. Ezell Ford, a 25-year-old mentally ill man, was shot THREE times, including once in the back, by a white police officer.

From what I see, black people have no role models. Many do not know who their dad is. No discipline. They grow up idolizing good for nothing thug rappers who glorify violence (all in the name of keeping it real).
The absent black father/single mother myth has been debunked. The CDC found that black dads are more involved with their kids on a daily basis than dads from other racial groups. These are the usual tired stereotypes used against "black culture". White people don't listen to rap ? White culture never glorifies violence ?! Have you heard of the NRA and seen those rifle toting rural American gun nuts ?

Since 1982, whites have committed the majority of mass shootings in America yet nobody whines about their culture like people do whenever a black man looks at someone the wrong way.

I say good on him for showing such courage.

There is blatant racism in America going on. Only a fool would deny it.

For some PPers it appears racism isn't enough of an issue to be concerned about if it happens to other ethnic groups or if they never experienced it.

Here's the facts. Blacks are far more likely to be arrested for selling or possessing drugs than whites, even though whites use drugs at the SAME rate. And whites are MORE likely to sell drugs. When black people are arrested for a crime, they are convicted more often than white people arrested for the same crime. According to the US Sentencing Commision, blacks are likely to receive a sentence 10% longer than whites for the same crime. I could list such figures all night.

Now either one can accept the facts and listen to the experts who've proven SYSTEMIC racism in America targeted against blacks or play dumb by hiding behind uninformed black stereotypes.

White people don't oppress black people as much as black people oppress their own kind.

"Their own kind" - what a pleasant individual you must be to have around. Did you forget something called slavery ? Jim Crow and segregation ? Or did they not teach that at school which sounds like it was run by Strom Thurmond.

90MPH - Some here are basically arguing without having the gumption to say it - that blacks are "getting what was coming to them" and are trotting out uninformed ethnic stereotypes that would cause an uproar on here if it was used against Indians or Pakistanis to justify systemic racism. People who are saying Colin Kaepernick was "disrespectful" to the anthem reminds me of how nearly every movement be it trade unions, suffragettes and Civil Rights have been labelled by the sneering pundit class as unrealistic, delusional or extreme.

Yeah after hundreds of years of racism and systemic discrimination, blacks should just release a quiet statement and not offend the sensitive little feelings of white folk. It'll all go away soon as troodon said in #49 so stop whining. Well I prefer the MLK way - a man who rejected the tranquilising drug of gradualism.

We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.

Exactly, it may not be bad everywhere but some states are still stuck in the 60s regarding discrimination.

Newsflash: America isn't England, France, or Germany.

American Muslims are by far better integrated and economically better off than Muslims in Europe. Who cares what Trump supporters think?

I have more sympathy for black people in America, be they Muslim or non-Muslim, who continue to suffer through structural racism while American Muslims of immigrant backgrounds have never dealt with 1/10th of the bigotry that blacks went through. African-American Muslims laid the foundations for the civil liberties that we immigrant Muslims in Amreeka take for granted. Remember that.

Off course America isn't France, England, or Germany otherwise we wouldn't need different passports.

I think every American who lives in US is aware of the history of US and how slavery ( for the obvious reasons) laid the foundations for the civil liberties.

Muslims in Amreeka isn't taking anything for granted, they are just speaking for their rights as community as any group of community should. As MLK had said " our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter" and "Injustice anywhere is threat to justice everywhere"

Anyways, thanks for the elementary history lesson.

Anyone who disrespects the national flag or the anthem has no right to live in the country. but the fact that such people still exist shows the tolerance patriots show towards the traitors.

NFL: Brandon Marshall protests against US anthem as Broncos beat Panthers

Denver linebacker Brandon Marshall kneeled in protest during the American national anthem prior to the Broncos' victory over the Carolina Panthers in the opening game of the new NFL season.

Marshall is the third player to refuse to stand for the anthem since Colin Kaepernick did so last month in protest at what he sees as racial injustice.

"I feel like this was the right thing to do," said Marshall.

Broncos beat Carolina 21-20 in a re-run of February's Super Bowl 50.

At a pre-season game in August, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Kaepernick chose to remain seated while the national anthem was played.

He said he would not "stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour".

Kaepernick's team-mate Eric Reid joined him in not standing during the team's final pre-season game while Seattle Seahawks' cornerback Jeremy Lane stayed seated ahead of a game with Oakland.

Marshall, a college team-mate of Kaepernick at Nevada, told NFL.com: "The message is I'm against social injustice. I'm not against the military or police or America at all.

"I knew what territory it came with, and I decided to do it. I feel like this is the right platform. This is our only platform to really be heard."

The NFL has previously said players are "encouraged but not required" to stand during the anthem.

Only happens if the person is not white (like Kaepernick) or some other minority. The only time a white person will get blasted is if they have liberal progressive leanings. Look at Obama...no other president has been dissed as heinously as him...the only reason is because he's black and the son of a "muslim". They invited a foreign head of state under his office to address his Congress to sabatoge his own foreign policy.

is this true? even as a proportion?

Not only is it true. But misdemeanor drug possession charges often result in sentences longer than felonies committed by whites.

Just look at Brock Turner, convicted of rape, and only served 3 months in jail. Mohammad Amir got more time for stepping over a line on the ground (not condoning spot fixing).

What is that you want to munch on?

Are you upset over the fact that brown Muslims are just as racist to black Muslims as white people?

Flies in the face of the persecution narrative that Desi Muslims try so hard to capitalize upon.

As a Pakistani living in America - I have never had any such issues or ever faced any sort of discrimination whatsoever - whether due to my race or religion.

I think these type of incidents are overblown.

You heard about people getting removed from airplanes and stuff but people need to stop behaving like idiots and stop playing the race card when they have to face the consequences of their ridiculous actions.

We aren't oppressed, but we aren't treated the same as non-muslim whites either.

Group of Miami Dolphins players kneel in protest during national anthem

Seattle — Arian Foster jumped headfirst into the conversation of race in America, taking a knee during the playing of the national anthem Sunday.

Foster was joined by Dolphins teammates Michael Thomas, Jelani Jenkins and Kenny Stills in his silent protest of the treatment of African-Americans by police. The display was not coordinated with the Seahawks, who linked arms in a demonstration of unity.

Foster's decision to protest was a reversal of his thinking from two weeks ago. On Aug. 28, he told the Miami Herald that he understood why 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat during the anthem, but wouldn't personally follow Kaepernick's tactics.

"I don't necessarily see that as a solution to anything," Foster said then. "This is me talking. This is Arian talking. If that's what he felt, that's his form of protest, I support his right to protest. Those are his thoughts, his opinions."

Foster continued: "Would I not stand up for the pledge [of allegiance]? Me? No. I don't see the correlation, in my opinion. But I understand what he's doing."

The Dolphins released the following statement immediately after Foster's demonstration.

"We encourage all members of our organization to stand at attention during the national anthem out of respect and appreciation for the freedoms we are afforded as Americans. We also recognize that it's an individual's right to reflect during the anthem in different ways. We respect these liberties and appreciate the sacrifices that everyone has made for our country, especially on this day of remembrance. We hope today's events will continue a respectful and thoughtful dialogue in our community on unity, inclusiveness and togetherness."

Would they get the sam grief if they didnt call themselves Muslim?

How are Sikhs treated in Lahore

There aren't many left

And also that's no reason to treat Ahmedis poorly. The bigotry is strong and they would be discriminated against regardless of what they call themselvss

I don't believe in persecution either especially as the people doing the killing are no saints themselves

NFL-Eagles players latest to join anthem protest

Sept 19 (Reuters) - Philadelphia Eagles defensive players Malcolm Jenkins, Ron Brooks and Steven Means stood together with raised fists during the U.S. national anthem before their game against the Chicago Bears on Monday.

The trio joined the movement of athletes who are using the anthem as an attempt to draw attention to racial inequality.

Jenkins said last week he planned to join the protests, sparked by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick during the NFL's pre-season.

"Last week, we talked about doing some stuff, but we wanted to make sure that we didn't do anything to take away from the families that suffered from 9/11," Jenkins said in a radio interview on Friday, referring to games that coincided with the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"We didn't want to mess with that day, so we left last week alone. But moving forward, I'm sure there will be guys that will probably join in."

Kaepernick started the protest when he chose to stay seated, and then later opted to kneel, for the anthem. He said it was a gesture against injustice and police brutality.

Several players from the Los Angeles Rams, Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans protested during the anthem on Sunday, while Megan Rapinoe has also knelt during the anthem at the U.S. women's soccer team games.

Other NFL players have chosen to raise fists, recalling a similar demonstration by athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos during their medal ceremony at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.

The protesting players have been seen as allies of the Black Lives Matter movement, which grew in response to a string of high-profile police killings of unarmed African-Americans across the country. About two-thirds of NFL players are black.

Other athletes and fans have spoken out against the protests, viewing them as disrespectful.

Amazing to see people still having the audacity to criticise these protests as American policemen/women continue to murder innocent African Americans.

I wish these athletes also protest hundreds of young African American teens that get killed by their own kind.

Everyday we read Blacks killing blacks. But no one bats an eyelid.

Black on Black crime doesn't justify police brutality and racism towards Blacks. It's like an abusive teacher saying that people shouldn't be outraged by them abusing their students because the students come from abusive families themselves.

Are you upset over the fact that brown Muslims are just as racist to black Muslims as white people?

Flies in the face of the persecution narrative that Desi Muslims try so hard to capitalize upon.

I don't know where you live? But if that is case in your community then you need to work hard to fix it and stop blaming rest of the brown Muslims who are living in peace and harmony with Muslims of any race. I hope your community realized soon that being racist to black Muslims is against the teaching of the Islam. Good luck brother.

Yes. It does not justify.

The number of blacks getting killed by their own kind is several times more. Yet no black person talks about it and there are no protests by any of these pro-athletes.

It's human instinct to overlook what your own kind does to you than what the other does to you. White people speak often about islamists killing their people or criminals of other backgrounds yet most white people have been harmed by other white people. BLM is just a natural reaction.
