Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that young people today no longer need to go abroad to pursue their dreams as the means and resources to fulfil their aspirations are now available within the country.

Addressing a convocation ceremony at a private university here, he described youths as the nation's heroes and emphasised that they have the potential to take the country to greater heights.

"The country faced numerous challenges after Independence. An atmosphere of despondency prevailed due to various reasons, causing our youths to be afraid of dreaming... They only dreamt of the US, the UK... For decades our youths had to go abroad to fulfil their dreams…

"However, times have changed. It is the time to build the 'Indian dream'... Now you have the means and resources in the country to fulfil your dreams and aspirations. What is needed is a strong will and determination," Singh said, citing the growth of start-ups and the digital economy in the country.

He said India is continuously moving forward towards becoming self-reliant in various fields including health and defence.

"If India says something on the international platform, then the whole world listens carefully to what India is saying," he said.

He noted that during the COVID-19 pandemic, India turned challenges into opportunities, leading the country towards self-reliance in the fields of health and education.

As the chief guest, Singh presented medals, certificates, and degrees to 25 outstanding students. In total, 275 students received gold medals, certificates and degrees, with around 4,000 students completing their courses.

In his address, Singh shared the success mantra of "three Ps" -- Patience, Persistence, and Perseverance -- and encouraged students to harness their talent, strong willpower and hard work.

He highlighted India's growing self-reliance in defence and other sectors, citing the country's increasing number of startups and its expanding global presence.

"Today, India is establishing itself as one of the strongest nations. Our youth can represent the country with new confidence and energy. If you possess an idea and skill set and are ready to work hard, you will have no shortage of opportunities or resources," he said, adding India is undergoing a period of "transformation, innovation and dynamism".

Singh said India and its Vedic civilisation were far ahead of time which is reflected in achievements in varied fields like industry, science, textiles, medicine, philosophy and spirituality.

No thanks, Indians should look to escape the tax terrorists that the BJP and Narendra are, if they have the means.

Also, these politicians are the first ones to send their kids abroad for education. Ask them to put their money where their mouth is, and send them to government schools and colleges growing up.

Nobody is going to have less/more children or decide where they are going to live just because of a politicians' words anyway.

A lot of BJP voters have been massively annoyed by the last budget, and that includes me. I'm still a BJP voter, but I'm seriously annoyed by their tax terrorism.

With these kind of Taxes, no way. Few of my well off friends are already looking at Dubai. Taxes should be in sync with inflation.

Just wait for the next budget in a few days. The screws will only tighten.

Even if they lose you (salaried class) as a voter, it doesn't matter one jot. You were just a statistical rounding error in their supporter base anyway.

I dread that.

I dread that.

"I'm still a BJP voter" - they love that.

"I'm no longer a BJP voter but I will stay at home and vote for nobody" - they don't mind that either.

Please make them pay.

No use buddy. The other side also treats middle class salaried person as a rounding error.
The only way I can think of is to satyagraha Gandhi style.

One of my best friends from school moved to Netherlands mainly to escape tax terrorism.
TBH. I dont blame your friend. I got a H1B sponsored by my company once but I didnt go through it thinking about making something in India. It turned out well for me but I do think how it might have been otherwise.

Not everyone is as lucky as you. Most people in your place would have moved.

When the Congress were in power, I recall LTCG was zero, and the tax slabs were much friendlier vs the inflation of the time. That government came with its own pitfalls but they were certainly friendlier to the salaried class. Of course, there is no guarantee it will happen again if you bring them into power somehow.

Do you own a startup? How is it going?

Someone has to fund all those freebies.

I have multiple ventures now. Used to flip websites when I was young. I run couple of shopify stores now along with a couple of tea shops in partnership. Invested in my friends startup and acted as consultant CTO for it. Moving away from software and moving into indoor framing. Like every other sw enigneer, I want to grow my own crops and play videogames.

Indian dream cannot be achieved until political red tape, socialistic tendencies and reservations are removed completely.

Merit, ease of starting business, infrastructure needs to be promoted and developed. India is indeed developing. But it will not reach the basic developed standards until 2040. Until then, the brain drain cannot be stopped.

Canadians will be hoping that Indians stay in India.
Only a messed up, desperate, cheated person will go to Canada. The Canadian dream is dead. That country is no where close to the opportunities that US can provide.

Even Indian government warned its citizens to not go to Canada for education or jobs.

TBH Tax should not be the reason for Indians to move overseas. If you find taxation in India is bad, come to UK, Europe and USA. At least in India, you can save tax by showing housing loans and other expenditure. At least that was the case till the time I was there. In Britain, you pay half of your income on tax - salary, bonus, interests etc. No questions can be asked and there is no way of evading it. On top of that there are additional health surcharges, council tax, road tax etc etc. So if any Indian is looking to move to the western world fearing Indian tax system, they are in for a bigger shock.

The problem is not high taxes.. its the sub standard service we get back. Only 2% of Indian population pay direct taxes. I think it in the range of 40%55% for western nations.

1. Home loans are no longer eligible for tax benefits in the new tax regime, which the government is funneling everybody towards.

2. You get far more bang for the buck for your taxes in the countries you mentioned than in India. Anyway, the comparison should be with fellow developing countries like China, not the Western World. Even China leaves us in the dust.

3. If you believe in what you have written anyhow, what are you doing in the UK? Would you like to swap places with me?

If you ask low income households to pay taxes, there will be riots on the streets.

Only some middle class and upper middle pay taxes. Government has to play a tight rope walk.

Never heard the term tax terrorism lol how bad do you guys have it in India?

What is the image that comes to mind when you hear the word "India"?

Then - believe it or not, achieving that image costs the Indians on this thread an arm and a leg.

Just do a flat 20% tax. Our consumption decreased this quarter. People need extra cash to spend back. It will increase consumption and gst collection.
