North Korea warned Mr McCain and Mr Cruz that they were “like [puppies] knowing no fear of the tiger”.

US Senator John McCain has sparked a war of words with North Korea after describing its dictator Kim Jong-un as a “crazy fat kid” in a TV interview.

Mr McCain’s assessment of Kim, 33, came just a few months after China blocked internet searches on the taboo subject “Kim Fatty the Third”, was not well received in Pyongyang.

The Korean Central News Agency, widely viewed as the mouthpiece of the reclusive regime, denounced the remarks as “a grave provocation” that were a “little short of a declaration of war,” reported the Daily Caller.

Mr McCain told MSNBC’s Greta van Susteren in an interview on March 22 that the “crazy fat kid that’s running North Korea” is far worse than some of history’s worst dictators.

“He’s not rational, Greta,” he said. “We’re not dealing even with someone like Joseph Stalin, who had a certain rationality to his barbarity.”

A North Korean foreign ministry spokesman told KCNA that Mr McCain’s comments were “blasphemy” and that he had offended the dignity of the country and its supreme leadership.

He added that “hardline conservative figures like Ted Cruz”, the Republican Senator for Texas, were also affronting the “supreme dignity” of Kim by proposing to relist North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism.

North Korea warned Mr McCain and Mr Cruz that they were “like [puppies] knowing no fear of the tiger”.

But Mr McCain appeared to be unfazed by riling a dictatorial regime that is known more for its nuclear weapons threat than its sense of humour.

“What, did they want me to call him a crazy skinny kid?” he quipped from his Twitter account, linking to the Daily Caller story.

I love Senator McCain. If he had won the GOP nomination in 2000 instead of W I think the world would be in a better state today.

I'm curious as to why you think that?...he's quite the hawk...supported the invasions of Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya...

And if I remember rightly he supported using military force against N Korea and supports those means against Iran too...

Also advocated for arming the rebels in Syria and we see what that has led to...

You can be a hawk and still make prudent decisions based based on solid intel.

Somebody who appeared to be in Afghanistan oversaw the 9/11 attacks. Any POTUS would have answered that with with military force. It was not a unilateral move by the US - NATO declared Article 5. In any event, Afghanistan became a UN-sanctioned operation led by NATO, involving dozens of countries.

However I think a President McCain would not have invaded Iraq unilaterally without an additional UN Resolution beyond 1441, that way keeping moral authority.

I think the only other person who loves war more than George W is McCain.

I love the guy too. I think he's wonderful.

McCain that is.

Nothing about Kim Jong UN says leadership. He is fat while average North Korean just eats enough to survive. He should move to Beijing and let Koreans live in peace. They will never be able to match western technology no matter how hard they try.

As long as China is there, No one can touch North Korea and the Kim family.

That's the problem, isn't it?

The people around Trump know that the USSR collapsed when the USA went all out in the Arms Race in the 1980's under Reagan.

A sensible, calm leader would avoid such a situation. But the Chinese are trying to work out what Trump really means in terms of the South China Sea and Taiwan. We all are.

I would not rule out massive changes, to be honest.

I doubt that. McCain nearly died in the USS Forrestal fire. He fought in a war and suffered terrible injuries. He was a POW for six years. He received minimal care and was tortured.

Guys like that don't rush to war, because they have seen the face of it.

It always sickens me when people defend mass murderers

That may be so, but he has advocated for every single invasion and military intervention the U.S. has partaken in. He backed Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Syria interventions. For someone who has seen war and should be wary of it, his policies don't seem to reflect that. He is mad at Trump because Trump wants to stop US participation in Syria war.
